Architecture is a carrier to carry on the three parts: the past, present, and future; sustainability implies proper tackling on relations among such three parts. My understanding of sustainability expanded from a continuation of historical and cultural context to multi-aspect issues involving academic research, future life, data analysis, and architectural technology. I tried to find out how to integrate the key elements abovementioned by designing varied types of buildings under different environments, contexts, scales, and cultures. However, the architectural education about sustainability in Taiwan remains in so-called energy reduction or green building certification, only focuses on academic research and rarely applies the research results to architectural practices; hence it is the main reason for me to apply for studying the MSc Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences Program: Architecture track offered in Delft University of Technology. In the past 10 years, I had designed a ceremony building, a renovation of an old building, a sustainable market, etc., from four-year architectural training in the university; experienced practical projects such as social housing and China rural architecture from six-year work experience in Taiwan and China. From these experiences, I have noticed that it is inevitable to face the alternation between old and new buildings in urban development. In my opinion, how to apply to practical projects after accumulating academic researches and numerous data analysis to achieve building sustainability, can be learned from MSc Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences Program. The courses for methodologies and theories allow me to establish the solid theoretical foundation, abundant architectural technology training and workshops can be applied to practical architectural design in the future. The studio objectives of all themes ranging from the transformation of the historical building to the discussion on the future building, studies ranging from traditional structures to up-todate architectural technology, from the architectural space of small-scale indoor units to the design of urban scale, through which I can not only try to explore the topics I am interested in, such as Heritage & Architecture studio or the one closely related to the transformation of old houses that I am concerned about, I can also reexamine the contradiction between my architectural view and working experience, and learn the perspectives of different cultures from international exchanges to complement and strengthen my thinking logic. For the reasons mentioned above, the Master’s program in Architecture track in TU Delft is the perfect choice as a foundation to fulfill my expectation for the future plan.

Reuse of unoccupied spaces in the traditional market Reuse of unoccupied spaces is an architectural issue actively discussed in recent years in Taiwan. The relationship between the new and the old will be interwoven with each other during urban development. However, some old houses in Taiwan cannot be processed immediately since the property rights are complicated, government policy and original urban planning are not comprehensive, these old houses have neither historical sites nor the value of real estate business; therefore, these scattered and forgotten urban spaces are all over Taiwan. The design is based on Chungxin Market in Taichung of Taiwan, my hometown, where I grew up. Such a familiar place is taken as the design and research object to explore its regional and site atmosphere, trying to construct a set of house reuse mechanism from the living spaces of common people to connect the isolated spaces in series, activate the urban corners that are forgotten, and develop new space experience.

History & Context

1969 The market was built.

1978

1988

A new public market opened, which only 1km away from Chungxin market.

National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts and Taichung Culture Center were gradually constructed.

1994

Chungxin market is surrounded by the green belt, high-density housing, and facing the National Taiwan Museum across the Wuquan road.

Changes in lifestyles made the original market gradually depressed.

2008

Since 2008, a group of artists started to colony this place by opening unmanned art galleries, coffee shops, an independent bookstore about gender issues and so on, appeared in the market spaces, the traditional market spaces changed.

Through the observation and analysis, the design goal is to utilize unique phenomena currently—relationships between residents and tourists as well as residents and artists. By using newly added space functions and space objects, I created a new partnership mode according to the original activities of residents in the market in the ways like the kitchen, dining room, living room in which common food memory and life memory were left.

The abandoned spaces were connected by designing a new pattern of lighting and adding spatial elements to create more opportunities to make people meet each other. Moreover, adding these new programs to those deserted spaces, artists' studios, and activities of the traditional market could be more lively and active. This mechanism of renovating markets and abandoned spaces was expected to be an approach that the government could take in the future.

02 Summer Breeze Category: Academic Project Role: Individual Project Level: 3rd Academic Year, 2012 Project Type: Ritual Space Location: Taipei City, Taiwan Supervisor: Yong Fu Chen [yfchen@aedi.com.tw]

"Diligently Cultivate in Arts in Summer Days" "Summer Breeze Venue" mainly functionalizes with providing a space of rituality for the doctoral students of National Taiwan University (hereinafter referred to as the "NTU") to cultivate their moralities, conduct introspection, enrollment, and graduation, and show respect and support of NTU for those who have devoted their most precious time in their lives to pursuing veritas. The space practice will be discussed in the design through the transmission of knowledge. NTU, the top leading seat of learning, gathers national elites, and the ritual field also becomes necessary in addition to teaching space. NTU lacks such a ritual space and communication field. The knowledge originates from a discussion, research, inheritance, and space as important media. A block of buildable land was created between Southern Xinsheng Road and School History Museum after removing Agricultural Exhibition Hall (dotted buildings), providing the possibility of Summer Breeze Venue's practice on the NTU's campus.

[ Discussion on Knowledge from Academy of Athens—A Paintinginteract Work ] In the Academy of Athens, a well-known painting of Raphae, all characters are scholars from different times and research fields. Evidently, they are divided into different knowledge groups, and each group seems to discuss. According to the analysis of this painting, a conclusion can be drawn: knowledge originates from the discussion, debate, and sharing. In other words, people should have more opportunities to interact.

ar

The site, located on the north side of the university's gate entrance, takes on a trapezoidal shape. There are three existing campus buildings in the former site, and these buildings will be completely demolished in the future. The site is adjacent to Southern Xinsheng Road—a traffic artery to the west. It is adjacent to the Gallery of National Taiwan University History to the east, a historical building during the period of Japanese occupation.

Programming and Spatial Setting In terms of the space arrangement, the ceremony is treated as the basis of spatial order, and the cone-shaped chimney is deemed the center of the ceremony, running through the logic of the whole ceremony. In the entrance ceremony, seeds are taken out from the chimney on the first floor to gaze at rice fields pending to be cultivated in the future, symbolizing the next challenge. At the graduation ceremony, rice's full spikes are carried to the second floor and scattered through the chimney's opening. The space of the auditorium faces National Taiwan University Library, symbolizing graduation with abundant knowledge.

03 Accumulation / Walking Category: Academic Competition Role: Individual Project Time: 3rd Academic Year, 2012 Project Type: Market Location: Casablanca, Morocco Supervisor: Sheng-Chieh Huang [taipeijay@gmail.com]

About the Competition This international competition was held by AC_CA (Architectural Competition Concours’ Architecture) in 2012. The aim of the competition is to design a New Sustainable Market Square in Casablanca. The design of this new structure should reflect contemporary design tendencies. The proposal must not only attend to the specific function, but the design should also take into consideration the urban insertion and its impact. Participants were expected to create a new contemporary social space where locals can meet and shop. Furthermore, doing research to highlight the unique aspects of designing an original market and meeting the requirements of Green Architecture are also the goals of this competition.

Concept A market square is a place for people to shop and meet someone. In terms of shopping behavior at the market, shopping while walking, filling up the basket, I regarded this kind of behavior as a process of accumulation. Besides, from the research of Morocco's culture, it was easy to find that 3 features were shown in the following diagram. This design aimed to create an unprecedented shopping experience at the market. The market square was composed of prefabricated stalls and ramps. The walking and shopping experience at this design was a transformation of the goods in the customer's baskets.

In 2017, the Strategy of Rural Revitalization was formally proposed in the 19th CPC National Congress of China, and rural vitalization became the focus of national development since then. However, rural construction had been implemented for years in China. Its development was backed by China in a more systematic way when it was proposed in the 19th CPC National Congress; and it has formed its unique style and developed into a rural construction and renewal models with national characteristics due to Chinese unique political system, the world's largest population, and vast land.

History and Location of Hanhonggou

NO.2

Hanhonggou old Village, located in Qinyuan County, Shanxi Province, China, has been an ancient village since the Wanli Reign of the Ming Dynasty, and it was also the site of the logistics department for a party, government and military organs in Taiyue District; consequently, numerous slogans and buildings were left in the antique village then. Presently, residents have moved to the new village to the west side. Most of the old village houses are idle, enabling the overall rehabilitation plan to come true.

万历 Red Tourism Village In recent years, Qinyuan County regarded Grand Green Qinyuan Tourism County as the mainstay for development. Hanhonggou has been treated as the major demonstration site for development thanks to its special history. We planned the project to be a red tourism village themed with the life of the Red Army. The local economy is expected to be invigorated, and the antique village is wished to be activated by introducing the tourism industry.

Hanhonggou becomes well known for a flood discharge ditch in the village, which turns into a river in the rainy season and an access road for villager's passage in the dry rainy season. Because the sandstone terrain dominates the local area, various tableland features take on the local area after being washed by rain, the house types are also divided into house-type cave dwellings, ground-shaped cave dwellings, and common bungalows, and diversified landforms are presented in the village, adding quite a few features to Hanhonggou.

No. 1 Node, located at the entrance of the antique village, is closely adjacent to the gate tower of the antique village, adjoins the ditch to the south and secondary road to the north, former building on the site due to its disrepair for a long time is completely demolished rather than being retained in consideration of its non-existing historical value.

As a tourist information center at the entrance of the entire village providing catering services and meeting space, this node is featured with a twostory concrete frame structure. Its facade design is inspired by loft facade for local traditional building, the wood log strips of the loft which formerly used as barn and storage space are converted into modern wooden grid form, and grey bricks of demolished local obsolete houses are used as facade materials, continuing the historical memory from the perspective of the facade.

Design follows the horizontal layer of the site.

As the sitting-out area of the entire village, this node presents a coffee bar, tea room, and historical relics to serve as the activity stage in the courtyard. The whole building is designed in the manner of retrocession for advancement. The node is the steel frame structure with largesize glass windows on the facade. On the one hand, the node endows a better vision, and it makes the building hidden amid the cluster of trees because of the reflection of glasses, on the other hand, blending into the surroundings. Additionally, local rubbles are used as facade materials in the space of actual functional requirements, and the facade is built and piled by the local old craftsmen with stones one by one. The wooden platform extended from the building makes it possible for visitors to go out and enjoy the natural atmosphere. Children are allowed to play in the sand pit, while adults are enabled to sit on the outdoor platform to appreciate the whole village and water landscape.

Node no.2

Small Theater Thanks to a millennial old locust tree towering in the village and the site full of stories because of the cave dwellings inside, our team designed the node as a village theater, placed a new ladderstyle small theater building, created an outdoor stage together with locust trees and cave dwellings in a village to provide a performance venue for traditional folk songs, and the dome device was designed to be in red to highlight its public nature, making the site become more typical and echo the red culture theme of the whole tourism village.

The site, formerly known as Jinan Bank, was composed of three small courtyards, we broke through the courtyard walls to create a residential area for Bed and Breakfast service, demolished houses formerly dilapidated, rebuilt in the original layout, and incorporated into new accommodation spaces amid ancient houses, making newly built, and available buildings exist harmoniously.

Taiwan public housing and design goal Public housing is one of the main policies of the Taiwan government. Compared with the old-style national housing, the new-style public housing provides a rent-only business model, allowing young people to save money to buy a house under low rent conditions. Provide a better living environment for disadvantaged groups. The second district of Ankang Public Housing is the construction of housing under such a policy. As an architectural design team, the goal is to break the social labels of public housing-poverty, disadvantaged, dirty, and propose mixed living and sharing models, barriers, and discrimination. It was caused by incomprehension, so the team tried to break the use of ethnic divisions with spatial planning. We advocate shared communities-expanding the home into a community.
