Pressure Printing

Felt: History through Fiber

Designing Illustrative Type

Pressure printing is an experimental letterpress technique used to create textural prints. It is an easy, no fuss way to print textural elements and other materials, producing atmospheric prints. The results are like monoprints, but the process is even faster. You can easily repeat your image or produce playful variations. The results can be stand-alone images or one multilayer piece. This workshop provides an introduction to Vandercook presses, the workhorses of letterpress printing.

Felt from wool is considered to be the oldest known textile. In this one-day workshop, participants will learn how to wet and nuno felt yardage, three dimensional forms, and detailed pattern / imagery that will open endless possibilities. Demonstrations, historical foundation and sample production will take place in the morning, with individual projects in afternoon.

This workshop will explore the expressive connection between type and illustration. Teachers will begin by learning how to create initial letters from basic geometric forms. From there you’ll add illustrative qualities to each letter using Adobe Illustrator. As a final result, teachers will design a unique and thematic letter and will take home the skills to create a whole alphabet!

3D Modeling: Jewelry + Small Objects

Warm Connections: Glass Fusing Basics

Templates: A Different Process for Working with Soft Slabs of Clay

New advances in 3D printing have made the use of computer-aided design (CAD) productive for artists (and teachers!) working independently and on a budget. This workshop will address the many applications of Rhinoceros (“Rhino) including form exploration, 3D visualization, design, modeling, prototyping, printing, laser and waterjet cutting, and manufacturing. Each participant will complete a 3D model and will learn to process and upload files for 3D printing and other output, in a myriad of materials.

In this hands on workshop students will go over easy to learn basics of glass fusing so you can start creating your very own projects. Skills will include glass cutting, planning your project and annealing schedules. We will teach you how to think like a glass artist!

Learning to use templates to create forms can allow for complexity and consistent duplication. In this workshop, we will explore the classroom application of this process by using basic template patterns, and follow through with the many variations that can evolve from the basic bowl and cup forms, to pitchers, lanterns and even a teapot. In addition, a focus on surface enhancement techniques will be demonstrated and discussed. Finished work will be bisque fired and ready for pick up at a later date.
