Handmade Books: Binding Techniques
Level-Up Your Virtual Classroom

Saturday, April 17 1–4pm (EST) In this 3-hour workshop, we will review a variety of approaches and resources to begin the journey of making your own art supplies. We will review examples of artists, educators, and organizations in the field such as Nick Neddo, the Center for Art Education and Sustainability (CAES), and Kremer pigments. We will also try out some wild-crafting of our own! Course fee: $30
Saturday–Sunday, April 17 + 18 9am–4pm (EST) Join artist Carmen Romine for a two-day virtual workshop learning the basics of bookmaking. You’ll learn the structure and anatomy of a book through a few binding techniques that incorporate soft and hard bound covers. Design the hardbound cover for an open bound stitched book and find inspiration through different materials you can include in future notebooks. Bookmaking is a great skill to have and allows you to create sketchbooks with the type of paper that you want to draw on. Course fee: $100
Sunday, April 18 9am–4pm (EST) Do you want to level-up your virtual art classroom? Participants will get a crash course on setting up a virtual classroom that utilizes both a front facing and an overhead camera simultaneously. Learn about tools and tricks that can make your virtual art classes more engaging, informative, and better looking. The class will cover a handful of different software and equipment options. Students will also learn origami throughout the day to experience the ultimate virtual set-up in action. Course fee: $50

Narrative Storytelling in the Virtual Classroom
Visual Art in Ancient America
Pattern: Off-Loom Weaving Techniques
Sunday, April 18 9am–4pm (EST) Narrative visual storytelling (AKA comics or cartoons) can be a powerful communication tool for students using imagery and text to express complex emotions and ideas through dynamic characters, vast new worlds and original stories. In this virtual workshop, you can learn how to use this diverse visual format around specific themes for a classroom environment, either in-person or virtually. Course fee: $50
Saturday–Sunday, April 17 + 18 9am–12pm (EST) This virtual workshop will introduce aspects of ancient and modern Indigenous New World visual culture. We will focus specifically on the Maya and Aztec peoples of Central America, examining the corpus of their material remains; sites and cities, artifacts and objects, written documents (pre- and post-contact). All this will give you a sense of cultural appreciation and understanding, a context for framing “non-western art”, and a way to talk about these artistic practices with your students. We will also talk about current indigenous issues and topics that relate to the cultures we are studying. Course fee: $50
Sunday, April 18 9am–4pm (EST) Weaving is the combination of two components, the warp and weft to create a pattern on the surface. In this virtual workshop, we will weave without a loom and explore the possibilities of interlacements with linear components using recycled materials around us at home: paper, plastic and fabric. We will transform these familiar materials by manipulating them to create an interesting surface design. Workshop attendees will learn more about the language of weaving, its connection to our everyday lives, and develop an awareness of individual ideas through off-loom patterning and design concepts. Course fee: $50
