Greetings from CIA’s president, Board chair After wrapping 10 “presidential tour” alumni events; 25 listening sessions with students, faculty and staff; 10 speaking engagements; and more than 300 meetings with donors, Board members and community partners this past academic year, I have an abundance of inspiration, motivation and information to help me understand where we’ve come from so that I can help us get to where we are going.

s I reflect on the 2022–23 academic year—and as we approach the holidays—I’m especially full of gratitude to be at the Cleveland Institute of Art and to have had the opportunity to get to know so many amazing CIA stakeholders during my inaugural year.
On that note, we have a recently refreshed Strategic Plan to guide us through the next few years. I hope you will join us in supporting our strategic priorities and in cultivating creative leaders, advancing our college and strengthening our communities. You can learn more at cia.edu/strategicplan. Also, in order to better tell our story, we introduced the Community Impact Report. This annual publication contextualizes
11th president—and the College’s first female president in more than 100 years— at the outset of the 2022–23 academic year. Her forward thinking is already guiding CIA’s efforts to cultivate creative leaders and strengthen our engagement throughout Greater Cleveland.

t this time last year, as the Cleveland Institute of Art emerged from the pandemic, I wrote that the theme for that year was “Back to the Future.” This year, I’m happy to say we’re simply—and boldly—moving “Into the Future.” That starts with the leadership of Kathryn J. Heidemann, who became CIA’s

CIA helps prepare them for college while inviting them to experience what it could be like to pursue an education in art and design. In closing, I’d like to thank the taxpayers of Cuyahoga County, who through Cuyahoga Arts & Culture pledged $563,713 in support of public programs at CIA, which include our Continuing Education and Community Outreach programs, the Cinematheque and Reinberger Gallery. Thanks are also in order to the State of Ohio for including CIA in its biennial budget for fiscal year 22–23 in recognition of the College’s contributions to Northeast Ohio’s economy.

2022–23 Financial Summary

IA’s primary source of income is tuition and fees, net of financial aid, which represents 59.6 percent of operating revenues. Fall 2022 total enrollment was 584 students, which included 179 new and transfer students. At CIA, we recognize the significant financial investment for education made by students and families. Concentrated efforts are made to keep tuition increases below national averages while providing the highest quality education in a state-of-the-art environment. Fundraising and endowment support provide necessary resources in support of CIA’s mission. Annual Fund giving represents 4.1 percent of the 2022–23 operating revenue while support from government grants, current restricted grants and endowment support decreased slightly to 17.8 percent as a result of funding to address COVID-19 winding down. Endowment support includes distributions from endowment funds held in trust and distributions from the CIA-managed portfolio. A majority of the endowment distributions are
used for need- and merit-based financial aid awarded to students. At June 30, 2023, the market value of endowment assets was $37.2 million, composed of $10.6 million of funds held in trust and $26.6 million of CIA-managed investments. The overall asset allocation of the CIA-managed portfolio at June 30, 2023 was 54.7 percent domestic equity, 13.2 percent foreign equity, 17.2 percent fixed income and 14.9 percent alternative investments. The endowment rebounded nicely during the fiscal year ended June 30, 2023. The one-year weighted-average return on the combined endowment portfolio was 9.8 percent, net of fees. Auxiliary enterprises represent 18.5 percent of total operating revenues and includes the Cinematheque film program and student housing. In 2022–23, the College spent 28.2 percent of its operating budget on instructional programs, 8.5 percent on academic support, 14.1 percent for student services, 25.8 percent for institutional support and 23.4 percent for auxiliary enterprises.

Support Through CSU In recognition of the mutually beneficial educational relationship between Cleveland State University (CSU) and the Cleveland Institute of Art—as evidenced through academic support, student and faculty advancement and enrichment, as well as various discounts—CSU disbursed funds to CIA that the State of Ohio had previously appropriated to the university for capital construction at the College. Thank You and Welcome During the 2022–23 fiscal year, the Cleveland Institute of Art welcomed Kathryn J. Heidemann as President + CEO and as an ex-officio member of the Board of Directors. CIA also welcomed Grosvie Cooley as a new member of the Board of Directors. Kim Kyle Nordstrom and Lynne Shlonsky moved from the Advisory Council to the Board of Directors in September 2022. John Mueller and Kyla Epstein Schneider joined the Board of Directors in January 2023. Jennifer Langer and Judson Smith stepped down from the Board of Directors and Marsha B. Everett ’81 moved from the Board of Directors to the Advisory Council in September 2022. Bill Nottingham ’01 left the Board of Directors in October 2022 and Steven Cencula ’91 left in April 2023. In September 2022, the Corporation approved a change to Advisory Council from Advisory Board. CIA welcomed new Advisory Council members Kelly Masters, Casey Monda and Marjorie Williams in January 2023. Kimberly Chapman ’17 was appointed as the Chair of the Advisory Council in August 2022. Amity Fowler and Sally L. Gries stepped down from the Advisory Council in September 2022, Laura Stack stepped down in October 2022, and Amy Miller and Margaret Harris Stanton stepped down in February 2023. CIA thanks them for their service. Sadly, Director Emeritus Caroline Oberndorf passed away this year. Mrs. Oberndorf served on the Board of Directors and Advisory Board for more than 30 years. Her experience as a philanthropist gave her a unique perspective during her tenure, which she proudly shared. She will be remembered for her devotion to CIA and the Cleveland arts community.
