High dense High rise Appartments The project is done individually as a part of the 7th-semester design studio. The objective of the project was to create 1200 flats of four types, 2 BHK, 2.5 BHK, 3 BHK, and 3.5 BHK on a site area of 12.3 acres. The brief/requirement demanded the basic bylaws be taken into account and followed consistently throughout the design process to make the building functional and safe. Beyond the residential units, the site should also include a clubhouse, shopping stores, a primary school, a gymnasium, a swimming pool, and other required services such as electrical substation, water treatment plant, garbage dumping area, and overhead water tanks. The main challenge was balancing the bylaws and the requirements.

The exponential increase in the Built-Up of Bhopal indicates the rising need for space, to cope up with this demand the efficient way to build high-rise high-density houses. The chosen site is located in Bhopal. Site Proximity Habibganj Rail Way Station, Misrod Rail Way Station are the very nearby railway station. The nearby Local Bus stops are Vijay Market Bus Station, Rrl Bus Station, Ampri Bus Station, Kasturba Hospital Bus Station, Narayan Nagar Bus Station.

Built Up area of Bhopal over the decades

Height 30m maximum Floors :10 + 3 Parking

Ground coverage (30% of 12.3 acres) 15000 sqm.

Builtup (FAR 2) [(12.3 x 2) + 30% circulations] =30.75 acres

MOS 12 m on road side 10 m on non road side

Parking Service - 2000 sqm General - 2700 sqm Resident’s = 2 Cars/100sqm.

School Area1200 sqm for population 4000 & above

Water requirements Domestic 7000 persons x135 Lts/day = 945,000 LTS Non domestics = 40% of domestic = 378,000 LTS Storage for 2 days = 264,6000

Shopping stores Area 1200 sqm 10 Shops for 4000 population

Design Requierments and Considerations The residential apartment will have a population of 7000, an average of 5.5 people per unit. The sheer volume of humans demands basic facilities such as schools, parks, temples, medical clinics, salons, spas, ATMs, shopping stores. All such spaces have been provided and calculations such as built-up area, mos, ground coverage, parking requirements, school requirements, water requirements, commercial requirements (atm, shops, salons, spas) have been detailed out based on the local and national bylaws.

3.5 BHK Unit Area 134 sqm.

3 BHK Unit Area 115 sqm.

2.5 BHK Unit Area 90 sqm.

2 BHK Unit Area 74 sqm.

Unit Plans The design started with creating a cluster of 12 units on each floor such that each unit is open from at least two sides, which will facilitate good lighting and ventilation. Ten such floors will make one block of 120 units and ten such blocks will contain 1200 units, thus the requirement was achieved. Each unit will have a Living room, a Kitchen, foyer, pooja space, and bedroom and bathroom based on the typology. Most importantly all these spaces are designed to receive enough sunlight and ventilation.

High dense High-rise Residence | Studio 7

Terrace The terrace has a parapet wall of height one meter

Residential Floors The ten-floor residence cluster houses 120 individual units of one type

Service Floor It houses the services necessary for the apartments such as water, electricity, and laundry

Parking Floors The three-floor parking can accommodate up to 230 cars. 74 each on the ground and first floor, 82 on the third floor

Exploded view This is an exploded view of one of the 3.5 BHK blocks, which is similar to the other three types in respect to the placement of cores, no of floors, no of residential units, and the overall layout.

With the rapid proliferation of the urban population, land has become a scarce resource, forcing city planners to opt for vertical growth over horizontal. Subsequently, the new developments continue to define the city’s skyline. Catering to the augmenting needs of the urban residents, high-rise apartments not only provide shelter but are also considered to be a status symbol by those who own them. A majority of the populace, nowadays, prefer living in a high-rise apartment for a variety of reasons, some of which are: remarkable view, safety/security, and a better living experience. With this project, we got introduced to the various aspects of high-rise buildings such as efficient land usage, complex vertical circulation, and commercial overview of high-rise buildings.

Commercial Centre | Studio 8

Cibi Chakravarthy S | 2021

Commercial Centre This project is done individually as a part of the 8th-semester design studio. This semester we focused on a multi-functional complex of buildings in an urban context, and exploration of issues related to growing problems of urban areas. The brief/requirement demanded concepts of urban design be applied to design a 'place' in the city of Chennai, with spaces such as a shopping mall, a 3-star hotel, an auditorium, departmental stores, offices, economy hotels, restaurants, and service stations. Local building bylaws and norms have been taken into consideration while designing the commercial complex. Desk appraisal and case studies have been undertaken during the study.

Commercial Centre | Studio 8

As the urban landscape is booming with dense man-made structures, a ‘place’ is needed to balance human psychology and the environment. The concept of Placemaking is a multi-faceted approach to the planning, design, and management of public spaces. Placemaking capitalizes on a local community's assets, inspiration, and potential, intending to create public spaces that promote people's health, happiness, and well-being. The chosen site is located in Chennai. Features The design includes an Open-air theatre, an auditorium, bank, chain stores, grocery store, a 3-star, movie theatres, rental office spaces, pharmacy, restaurants (builtin shopping mall and one in hotel), a shopping mall, wholesale Warehouse store, necessary parking spaces, service station with fuel filling facility, water tanks, electrical substation, and sewage treatment plant.

Three star Hotel The hotel is a part of the commercial complex and it shares some of its resources with the complex such as water supply, electric supply, garbage movement. The shopping mall is also dependent on the hotel for its revenue generation. Both the shopping mall and the hotel mutually depend on each other to enjoy these shared benefits. The hotel has all the necessary amenities like parking, banquet hall, restaurant, meeting hall, kitchen, shops, and rooms. The hotel is designed in such a way that it is functional, aesthetical, and also economically feasible. There is a parking facility for 75 cars and the parking facility of the shopping mall is also extended for the use of the hotel. Thus making enough parking space for the 170 rooms in the hotel.

Placemaking is an inherently people-centered approach to the planning, designing, and management of public spaces in cities, as it emphasizes the relationships between individuals, communities, and urban spaces. We got introduced to a larger piece of land (23 acres) unlike the previous project which was restricted only to a maximum of 15 acres of land area. The initial challenge was to balance the requirement, land available, and certain bylaws. Once these problems were resolved we moved into designing the ‘place’ in a people-centered approach. The approach emphasized people, some ‘places’ such as farmland, grass lawn, and artificial pond were introduced into the design to make the ‘place’ more interesting. This commercial complex is a unique place solely due to its human-friendly design approach.

Working Drawing This project is done as a part of the 6th-semester working drawing. The objective was to design a two-storey residence for a family of six members, on a plot of size 21ft x 40ft facing east direction. The challenge of this project was on detailing out the specifications, understanding the basic construction methods catering to the drawing construction techniques to make the process efficient.

Working drawings are critically important to the success of any building construction because they constitute a physical harmonization between the client's expectations and the builder's visualization. Working drawings might be prepared for; statutory approvals, for contractors to plan the construction works, to provide instructions on site, for the procurement of components, for the preparation of shop drawings, for the appointment of subcontractors, and so on. The fundamental role or function of working drawings is to convert design data into construction information and to communicate that information to the building industry, code officials, product manufacturers, suppliers, and fabricators. Through this project, I gained the necessary knowledge needed for such communication.
