Urban Expeditions is C.I.C.L.E.’s ongoing series of communityfocused bicycle rides aimed at getting people out of their cars and onto their bikes for healthier, happier and greener city.

Urban Expeditions rides happen on the third Saturday of the month, and are free, leisurelypaced, social, and family-friendly. The Urban Expeditions ride series was developed by C.I.C.L.E. to build community by giving local residents a chance to explore their neighborhoods on two-wheels. Shay Sanchez founded C.I.C.L.E. based on the belief that bicycling is a sustainable way to get around town, and a great way to reconnect with your community. Urban Expeditions rides give all cyclists--from first time riders, to racers, to commuters, to recreational riders--an opportunity to come together and explore their cities in a healthy, social, and sustainable way. What makes cycling “sustainable” are the many benefits that cycling offers -- including increased fitness levels, reduced traffic and air pollution, decreased dependence on fossil fuels, and a more intimate connection to your community. Urban Expeditions, which are led by 2 League Certified Cycling Instructors and facilitated by an all-volunteer team of ride leaders and sweeps, provide a relaxed and enjoyable riding environment for beginning and experienced riders alike. Rides are typically 6-10 miles in length, fully supported, and follow all basic traffic laws. Every month we visit a different neighborhood and explore cultural, historical, and natural points of interest. Frequently we address issues that affect the surrounding community, making for an adventure that is as much informational as it is experiential. Urban Expeditions is made possible with support from REI.

Frequently Asked Questions: What do I need to bring? You’ll need a bicycle in good running order. Most any type of bicycle will do. Be sure to have good air pressure in your tires, and check to see that the quick releases, that keep the wheels on your bicycle, are secure. It’s a good idea to have your bike inspected and tuned at least once a year at your local bike shop. If the ride is taking place near dusk or at night, please bring a white headlight and a red rear tail light. You’ll get thirsty and hungry on the ride. Be sure to bring plenty of water and a snack too. Do I need to be a fit and/or experienced bicyclist to participate? Absolutely not! Urban Expeditions rides welcome all beginning bicyclists. You will need to be able to ride your bike, and be comfortable with balancing and steering, but barring those with serious health challenges, most beginning bicyclists will do just fine. Most of our rides are 7-10 miles in length, are leisurely paced, and incorporate frequent stops for speakers and/or tours at planned destinations. We make every effort to choose low traffic streets and to avoid hills. Occasionally, we may encounter a hill along the way. In that case, we always encourage people to walk their bikes if they need to. There’s no shame in walking your bike--we all had to do it at some point. I’m an avid bicyclist. What’s in it for me? Urban Expeditions are fun. We may go slow, but this provides ample opportunity to socialize and meet new friends. We visit interesting locations, and meet with informative guides that speak on a variety of topics. Aside from that, know that Urban Expeditions is helping to grow bicycling, and many of our new riders can benefit from your knowledge and support. There’s no better way to learn than by interacting directly with a more experienced rider like you. Can kids come along? Yes! Urban Expeditions rides are family friendly. Our rides are short and slow-paced enough that most children, age 10 or older, will have no problem keeping with the ride. Children that are riding their own bikes should be confident riding their bikes--able to balance, steer, and hold a straight line with ease. We recommend that all children under age 9 should be on a tag-a-long bike, in a bike trailer, on a tandem, or carried by another safe and approved child-carrying device. All participants under 18 must wear a helmet and be escorted by a parent or guardian. When do Urban Expeditions happen? They take place on the third Saturday of every month. Location and times vary.
