People are going back to the gym in 2022. Post 2020, we as a collective are looking for an antidote to mental health struggles and seeking solace from the noise of newsfeeds. In an October 2021 study, researchers found that depression levels have more than tripled over the course of the pandemic. People are using exercise to manage mental health and stress, and 62% of adults say the strategy is effective. The gym has become a space for us to reconnect with our bodies, our health, and each other. As we think about design through the lens of fitness, we are inspired to empower users of the built environment to incorporate fitness seamlessly throughout their day. We are excited to explore this idea by blurring the lines between spaces so that fitness spills into work zones, pool decks, and outdoor spaces. Looking forward, fitness is reframed as an everyday ritual that welcomes strength, flexibility, resilience, and endurance in body, mind, and community. 7

WHAT’S IN | WHAT’S OUT C I D
D E S I G N
F O R E C A S T
FITNESS FEATURE
Creating a space where people want to spend time by investing in finishes and pushing the level of design.
Skimping on the fitness center budget and designing a purely utilitarian space. Designing in permanent or difficult to change details based around current equipment layouts.
Keeping the interior design of the space flexible for future equipment layouts. Use tape, decals, or painted concrete to mark floors. Maintaining a balance of classic gym equipment while incorporating some newer, tech connected pieces. Embracing fitness influencers. Design gyms with social media in mind – good lighting, eye catching backdrops, and phone mounts.
Tossing out all the old-school equipment in favor of new and untested tech connected pieces.
Designing large dedicated spin rooms. Overcommitting to on demand fitness. People will use their own apps. Keeping fitness only within the gym.
Blurring the lines between fitness centers and other amenity zones, including outdoor. Incorporating elements of recovery, breathwork, and wellness into workouts.
Separating fitness from overall health and wellness. Approaching working out as a chore. 9

FITNESS FEATURE
Every time we look for the ‘next big thing’ in fitness, we come back with the same answer – people love treadmills. Running is the most popular activity around the world, according to Fitbit, and 70% of people say their primary form of exercise is walking. The treadmill is still one of the most popular pieces of cardio fitness equipment and its popularity is growing at a rate of 4.3% per year. The treadmill is absolutely a component of the innovative fitness centers of the future. The designs are becoming sleeker, more intuitive, and multi-functional. With the onset of virtual trainers, fitness influencers, and celebrity coaches – treadmill workouts are becoming more vibrant and engaging. 12 © CID DESIGN GROUP LLC

Technogym’s line of treadmills includes two models we admire for their design and function the ARTISRUN and the SKILLRUN. Both of these treadmills offer connectivity to Technogym’s app so that users can track their stats. They also have HD screens with a library of training videos.
The ARTISRUN is a top of the line treadmill with a sleek design that’s available in matte black and carbon grey. The SKILLRUN offers ‘parachute’ and ‘sled’ modes that mimic pulling and pushing for true performance training. The SKILLRUN’s tech allows runners to upload their outdoor route to the software so they can mimic their outdoor run indoors.

Paramount Recreation Club in Sydney is an example of a beautifully designed gym that welcomes natural light, plants, open space, and natural wood tones. According to Bob Burton, who collaborated on the design with architects Herbert & Mason, the space was designed to feel “more like a sanctuary than a sanitorium” in order to focus on “physical, mental, and social health.” 14

A FOCUS ON STRETCHING C I D
D E S I G N
F O R E C A S T
FITNESS FEATURE
We have been tracking the idea of ‘recovery’ within the fitness world, and as recovery becomes more widely adopted, we are seeing a more specific focus on stretching. Many gyms now offer stretching classes, and entire studios devoted to exclusively stretching are popping up. Benefits of stretching include promoting flexibility, which is the foundation of all other workouts, and helps prevent injury. Stretching the body calms the mind, so there is a mindfulness benefit as well. Table stretching helps to extend muscles a little further than the central nervous system would normally allow, which makes an imprint on the neuromuscular system. Optimize fitness centers for stretching by programming virtual or in person stretch sessions, and providing flex zones with ballet bars, resistance bands, blocks, mats, and stretch tables. 18 © CID DESIGN GROUP LLC

CID has or is actively working in every major urban market in the US across 40 states and 65 cities, including Canada. A cri tical part of our process on every single project is a deep market study where we analyze the competition and development pipeline and carefully craft a competitive differentiation strategy. We collect and adapt programmatic and operational concepts and repor t on them in our forecast. This travel and study is key to channeling the market’s pulse and leading ahead of the pack.
We employ research from Esri Tapestry segmentation and PEW Research Center to go beyond the study of generational attributes, understanding psychographic and socioeconomic orientations of America’s changing population. We take the process one step further by identifying the key demographics that are shaping our markets and offering creative and tangible ways to design an d program to capture those specific demographics.
We study Axiomatic databases annually of completed new developments. We visit each community’s website and tally what amenities are advertised both in the home and community to report the most popular. We divide the research between urban and suburban markets. We also collect all extraordinary and unique amenities onto a “unique” checklist and note creative naming of amenities. We also follow key research reported by Kingsley & Associates and Costar, both leading real -estate industry analysts.
We share our research with industry partners and they reciprocally share with us. Large manufacturers invest a tremendous amount of R&D money to be on the forefront, and we watch closely. Some of our favorite professional organizations, such as t he Urban Land Institute, and powerful publications, such as Multi-family Executive, produce leading research that we sift through a nd fold into our forecast.
Researching popular hashtag search trends reveals many real-time relevancy indicators. We keep a close eye on hashtags in project-relevant locations and study what qualifies as a shareable moment.
