As we begin to look at every aspect of our lives through the lens of wellness, we are beginning to consider things like socialization, mental health, emotional health, and authentic balance to be integral to our new definition of holistic wellness. People are looking for opportunities to weave wellness into every moment of their day, not just through diet and exercise, but through how they approach work, friends, technology, and travel.
We are seeing a shift in people’s approach toward wellness. The idea of ‘wellness’ is becoming more casual, approachable, and accessible. It’s morphing into integrated wellbeing – a part of day to day life that is no longer divided between times we take care of ourselves and times we don’t.
As designers, we are inspired to create spaces that support people to access wellness as an integrated part of their day. We are coloring wellness outside the lines of just one space by activating well amenities in unexpected zones, designing wellness amenities to be social, and considering often-forgotten elements like sound.

10 CID DESIGN FORECAST LIFESTYLE WELLNESS GEN Z PERSPECTIVE
Generation Z (born 1997 2012) considers health and wellness to be their number one priority. For this generation, health is more than just the physical health of the body. To Gen Z, wellness encompasses sleep, rest, body image, sexual health, gender identity, nutrition, social health, mental health, emotional wellbeing, spirituality, and active fitness.
Gen Z is a bit skeptical and less consumerist minded than previous generations. They aren’t looking for a cure all product they can purchase. They know that true wellness is a process that takes daily care, and they are proactive about it. Nearly half of this generation monitor their day to day wellbeing with wearable technology.
As Gen Z influences other generations, and brands scramble to cater to Gen Z perspectives, we will see this view of wellness permeate all generations. This holistic view of wellness will become the norm, and we will likely see a shift to a more democratic version of wellness.
This holistic view of wellbeing also challenges the wellness status quo of curated, visually appealing, expensive, rigid routines, practices, and branding that were eagerly adopted by Millennials and Gen X. Gen Z has a more relaxed approach to wellness that is more balanced. For example, a Gen Zer who is conscious of their diet and may avoid ‘artificial flavors’ day to day, will easily make an exception for a decadent treat because to them that balance is true wellness.
Again,states.as
Gen Z watched as Boomers, Gen X, and Millennials compartmentalized emotions, worked themselves into burnout, and led lives too busy for self care. This young generation is taking a proactive approach to preserve optimal mental health, because they know that mental health decline eventually impacts all areas of wellbeing.
Though Gen Z may be blazing the trail, we are seeing a shift toward prioritizing mental health throughout all generations.
11 CID DESIGN FORECAST LIFESTYLE WELLNESS MENTAL HEALTH
we look to Gen Z to guide the conversation on mental health, 72% of this generation say their most important health and wellness concern is managing their mental health. Though Gen Z certainly has valid sources of stress, we can also infer that younger generations witness and react to experiences they observe in older generations and seek to pivot behavior to avoid the same outcome.
Mental health is positioned to become a huge conversation in the realm of wellness. Gen Z is leading the charge, with 75% of Gen Z stating they are open to talking about the state of their mental health. Gen Z is also 27% more likely to report their mental health is fair or poor compared with other generations who may fib to report more positive mental
The global events of 2020 have impacted all generations, and many are seeking to prioritize their mental health in order to heal and overcome the traumas of fear, isolation, economic and political turmoil, and widespread unrest.

12 CID DESIGN FORECAST LIFESTYLE WELLNESS ASHA URBAN BATHS
Asha Urban Baths is a bathhouse in Sacramento, CA offering soaking pools. saunas, cold plunges, a salt lounge, massage, and sound therapy. They even offer a cold bucket shower! The spaces are beautifully designed, and transition from silent to social spaces with informative signage. The bathhouse is coed and casual, which gives it an urban modern feel
13 CID DESIGN FORECAST LIFESTYLE WELLNESS © CID DESIGN GROUP LLC SOCIAL SAUNA
We are seeing the sauna shift from a tucked away, private back room for one person, to a prominent location adjacent to a pool or fitness. These saunas are designed for multiple users, are coed, and sauna goers wear their swimsuits. The next evolution of the sauna will often be paired with access to a cold plunge for the benefits of contrast therapy.
Aufguss | a sauna ritual where the presenter pours water and essential oils over the hot stones of the sauna, then uses a towel to fan hot, oil infused steam onto attendees. Modern Aufguss adds music and lighting, and Show Aufguss incorporates theatrical type performances, costumes and special effects.
Tip | put wet saunas in dry climates + dry saunas in humid climates
In Europe, the sauna experience is social at its core, and its wellness benefits are understood and accepted. The American sauna experience is typically private and not embedded in the culture. In Europe, there are sauna amphitheaters where 50 300 people sweat communally for a social, fun experience. We are starting to see the American sauna experience veer more social as more people are exposed to their health benefits in gyms and wellness centers.
The Starlight Steam Room at Bathhouse in Brooklyn
Prioritize adjacencies and the experiential path when designing sauna spaces. Create a user guide that illustrates a wellness circuit to lead people from a workout to the sauna to the cold plunge (for contrast therapy) to the recovery room to lay on the PEMF mat and meditate.
As we see the cold plunge enter the mainstream, it is notable that this challenge is often undertaken in a group setting, where everyone participating is able to cheer on their co plungers.
At home ice baths and cold showers are the most accessible ways to practice cold therapy, but many wellness clubs now offer cold plunges or even host group cold plunge classes and events.
The rise in popularity of cold plunging is also opening people’s eyes to the benefits of contrast therapy, or switching back and forth between hot and cold – for example – going from the sauna to the cold plunge. This has been widely practiced in Europe, but is somewhat new to Americans.
14 CID DESIGN FORECAST LIFESTYLE WELLNESS CID DESIGN GROUP LLC COLD THERAPY
Cold therapy, arguably made popular by Wim Hof, has been linked to many benefits including reducing inflammation and sore muscles, and recalibrating the nervous system. There are mental and emotional benefits as well, including helping to ease anxiety. People report feeling as though they are building mental fortitude and overcoming emotional barriers as they practice facing the cold.
15 CID DESIGN FORECAST LIFESTYLE WELLNESS PLUNGE
Plunge’s Commercial Plunge Pro is an ideal option for a commercial setting. The commercial option has a more powerful pump and a commercial warranty. The Cold Plunge has a powerful chiller to get the water temperature down to 39F and filtration to ensure clean water. Installation is plug and play. Once the Plunge is filled with a hose, it just needs to be turned on.
It’s generally agreed upon that humans are a social species. In our modern lives, we sometimes forget this for awhile, feel the ill effects, and have to reset. We seem to be in the ‘reset’ phase now, and people strongly consider social health to be an aspect of overall wellness. Social healing is an emerging term that refers to leveling up social interactions. This ‘social self care’ may include choosing to work in an office or cowork space, engaging in group wellness events, taking a tech break to interact with humans in person, or utilizing technology to connect with people digitally like staying in touch over a Fitbit challenge.

17 CID DESIGN FORECAST LIFESTYLE WELLNESS CID DESIGN GROUP LLC REMEDY PLACE
Remedy Place is a wellness social club with locations in West Hollywood, CA and NYC is a concept built upon principles enhancing your health and social life through self care and human connection. The branding on Remedy Place’s website positions the club as ‘your new happy hour, your new date spot, your new afterwork hangout.’
Amenities at the club include an ice bath studio, hyperbaric chambers, vitamin IV drips and shots, infrared sauna, red light therapy, group classes, and on-site holistic practitioners.
The wellness centers will be ‘rooted in lifestyle medicine,’ and the restaurants will be open to the public and feature a plant based menu.
The wellness centers are being positioned as taking a holistic approach to health that leverage the best of western and easter medicine. They will feature wellness, fitness, spa services, and education.
It will be interesting to watch the evolution to market saturation of wellness-centers as companies streamline and package these concepts for mass adoption. We may see these wellness / fitness / cowork / dining / social clubs become the primary community draw for gathering, and quite frankly, leaving the house.
The mission behind this new venture is to establish a ‘model of care which heals the whole person by focusing on prevention and reversal of disease through evidence based healthcare utilizing nutrition and lifestyle and aspires to elevate each individual’s health to the most optimized state possible.’
JOHN MACKEY WELLNESS CENTERS
John Mackey is the co-founder of Whole Foods Market and served as its CEO until earlier this year. Though details are vague, news broke that Mackey is listed as one of the partners of a new venture registered under the name, Healthy America. Job postings for this new company described it as ‘an evidence based lifestyle company, leading the convergence of culinary, healthcare, and wellness.’

Futureproof for an increase sensitivityelectromagneticin and create a digital detox amenity by designing low EMF zones. Incorporate educational signage, and EMF protective technologies.
EMF REDUCTION
EMF’s or electromagnetic frequencies, are areas of moving electrical charges. There are natural EMF’s, such as those emitted by the sun. However, as we fill our world with more ‘non native’ electronics, people are reporting sensitivities to these frequencies.

The market is starting to respond to those sensitive to electromagnetic frequencies and wellness minded people seeking a hardcore digital detox. Low EMF dwellings in the form of hotels, apartment communities, and single-family residential communities are slowly popping up. Though many of these spaces currently exist on the fringes of society, we expect to see some of these practices adopted by the mainstream.
21 CID DESIGN FORECAST LIFESTYLE WELLNESS © CID DESIGN GROUP LLC LOW EMF DWELLINGS
Hôtel Le Pavillon in Paris has rooms specially furnished for electromagnetic sensitive guests. EMF mitigation strategies include: shielding wall paint, grounding straps inside the walls, and radiation repellent windows.
An apartment building near Zurich in Switzerland was built to be as low EMF as possible by using shielded cables, thick concrete floors, and incorporating a built in shield that blocks mobile reception. Each unit has an entry vestibule that houses the utility closet separate from the rest of the living space
22 CID DESIGN FORECAST LIFESTYLE WELLNESS © CID DESIGN GROUP LLC WELLNESS TECH
Thought we are seeing some swing toward low tech approaches to wellness, technology in the wellness sector is continuing to grow and evolve. Products like the NOWATCH seek to soften the tech experience by removing screens and incorporating natural elements into their stress predicting ‘Awareable.’. FORME’s fitness mirror also shifts away from the screen heavy tech world with a beautiful, curved mirror that incorporates mindfulness routines alongside the fitness content. The Metaverse gets meditative with immersive apps that feature soft organic shapes like Maloka. PEMF, or pulsed electromagnetic field, mats mimic natural frequencies found in nature, stimulating and encouraging the body’s natural recovery process
The psychology of how we interpret each sound in the brain and the emotions and feelings they elicit is known as psychoacoustics. We are starting to explore the relationship between the frequencies of sound and wellbeing. From a wellness design perspective, we can create soundscapes that combine sounds to create a specific auditory environment. Endel is a startup that creates personalized soundscapes to help users sleep, relax, and focus. Endel collaborated with Grimes to create ‘A.I. Lullaby,’ an adaptive sleep soundscape powered by AI that factors in location, weather, and natural light exposure to create a personalized experience. Brain.fm is an app that creates ‘functional music’ to prompt a certain mental state.

23 CID DESIGN FORECAST LIFESTYLE WELLNESS CID DESIGN GROUP LLC HEALING SOUNDSCAPE
Traditional wellness travel that revolves around spa amenities is still valid, but people want the opportunity to access wellness amenities and participate in activities if they want to but they also want the option to do nothing in a beautiful tranquil setting.
People are traveling to learn something, sharpen a skill, or immerse themselves in authenticity, and they see this as integral to their overall wellbeing. Perhaps there is a part of people who are seeking to re-create the window of time during lockdown when many of us had time to learn a new skill or take on a creative pursuit. This kind of wellness travel may look like going on a culinary themed trip through Southeast Asia.
24 CID DESIGN FORECAST LIFESTYLE WELLNESS © CID DESIGN GROUP LLC WELLNESS TOURISM
These two scenarios highlight a shift in wellness travel. People are viewing wellness as encompassing a holistic approach of practicing their hobbies, trying something new, and seeking expansion and growth, but also prioritizing rest through unplugging and digital detox.
Wellness tourism is undergoing some subtle shifts post 2020. People are traveling with more intention. As our perspective on what defines ‘wellness’ expands and morphs, we are seeing travelers seeking out health centric respites that go beyond spas and yoga.
This is a key measurable to monitor as our perceptions around wellness evolve to include all aspects of day to day wellbeing
The caring economy is a concept based in assigning an economic value to activities that people perform that often relate to taking care of other people. Care work is defined broadly as work and relationships that are necessary for the health, welfare, maintenance and protection of all people – young and old, able bodied, disabled, and frail.
25 CID DESIGN FORECAST LIFESTYLE WELLNESS CARING ECONOMY
This can refer to child care, elder care, education, healthcare, and personal social and domestic services. This sector of the economy is often unpaid, and therefore, ‘invisible,’ but vital to sustaining life and population growth.
There is a global conversation emerging about how to make the caring economy ‘visible,’ how to compensate caregivers for their societal contributions, and how to measure the current unpaid caring economy that is not calculated into GDPs or similar data sets.

CID has or is actively working in every major urban market in the US across 40 states and 65 cities, including Canada. A cri tical part of our process on every single project is a deep market study where we analyze the competition and development pipeline and carefully craft a competitive differentiation strategy. We collect and adapt programmatic and operational concepts and repor t on them in our forecast. This travel and study is key to channeling the market’s pulse and leading ahead of the pack.
We study Axiomatic databases annually of completed new developments. We visit each community’s website and tally what amenities are advertised both in the home and community to report the most popular. We divide the research between urban and suburban markets. We also collect all extraordinary and unique amenities onto a “unique” checklist and note creative naming of amenities. We also follow key research reported by Kingsley & Associates and Costar, both leading real estate industry analysts.
Researching popular hashtag search trends reveals many real-time relevancy indicators. We keep a close eye on hashtags in project-relevant locations and study what qualifies as a shareable moment.
Trade shows, festivals, conventions, talks, markets, boots on ground watching, listening, observing and covering hundreds of different shows.
We share our research with industry partners and they reciprocally share with us. Large manufacturers invest a tremendous amount of R&D money to be on the forefront, and we watch closely. Some of our favorite professional organizations, such as the Urban Land Institute, and powerful publications, such as Multi family Executive, produce leading research that we sift through and fold into our forecast.
