MISSION The Purdue Teaching Academy sponsors the Graduate Teacher Certificate Program with three different tiers to accommodate the various levels of graduate teaching and instructional development interests:

The Center for Instructional Excellence (CIE) administers the program on the Teaching Academy’s behalf. An overview of criteria and requirements are presented within this brochure. Visit the CIE website for the full details of each certificate and required supplemental documentation (QR code on back). Graduate teaching assistants may complete one or all the certificates (Tier 1 criteria counts toward Tier 2 criteria; Tier 2 criteria toward Tier 3 criteria).

Email cie@purdue.edu to be enrolled in the appropriate Blackboard site for access to guidelines, forms, and FAQs. Application deadlines are Nov. 15 for fall semester and April 1 for spring semester. Graduate teaching assistants may submit completed applications up to the semester following graduation.

Graduate Teacher Certificate

TIER 1

GIDC Graduate Instructional

Development Certificate + Teaching Experience: Two individual undergraduate classroom teaching experiences at Purdue. + Teaching Observations: Conduct two observations: one experienced faculty and one experienced T.A. in your field, AND be observed in your teaching experience. + Micro-Teaching: Participate in a Micro-Teaching (MT) and playback session. + TA Orientation: Participate in Teaching Assistant Orientation prior to teaching. + Instructional Development: Six hours of instructional workshops beyond TA orientation.

+ Teaching Experience: Two semester-long undergraduate classroom teaching experiences at Purdue. + Teaching Observations: Satisfied by TIER 1. + Micro-Teaching: Satisfied by TIER 1. + TA Orientation: Satisfied by TIER 1. + Instructional Development: TIER 1 criteria AND three additional hours of instructional workshops, classes, or seminars beyond TA orientation. + Student Feedback: Conduct Early Feedback (EF) in at least one class used as a teaching experience AND be evaluated at the end of the semester by the Purdue course evaluation system (CoursEval) in ALL classes used as teaching experience.

CERTIFICATE TIERS

AGTC Advanced Graduate Teacher Certificate

+ Teaching Experience:

TIER 2 criteria AND two additional undergraduate classroom teaching experiences at Purdue OR one additional undergraduate classroom teaching experience if you are the primary instructor.

+ Teaching Observations:

TIER 2 criteria AND observe an IMPACT re-designed course.

+ Micro-Teaching: Satisfied by TIER 1.

+ TA Orientation: Satisfied by TIER 1.

+ Instructional Development:

Enroll in and complete an approved campus course on college teaching (see website for details).

+ Student Feedback:

TIER 2 criteria AND CoursEval for one additional class used as a teaching experience.

+ Mentoring:

Be mentored and be a mentor for a semester each.

+ Training Other TAs:

Work with other TAs for a minimum of 5 hours to support effective teaching.

+ Scholarship of Teaching & Learning (SoTL):

Investigate at least one area related to your teaching and student learning and present results in a campus setting such as a graduate seminar, colloquium, workshop, or online workshop.

+ Service:

A minimum of 10 hours of discipline-related service activities.

+Teaching Portfolio:

Construct a teaching portfolio.
