I congratulate each and every one of our student-athletes, coaches, administrations and communities for this outstanding achievement. I thank all of you for your dedication and commitment to representing excellence on the playing fields, along with exemplifying the highest ideals of sportsmanship and character among our 585 member high schools in the CIF Southern Section. The CIF Southern Section was founded in 1913. Since our inception, we have always been first and foremost an educational institution dedicated to teaching young people valuable lessons they can utilize to make them better students now and better people for the future. We believe that the high school student who participates in athletics at their school will learn so many important values that will translate into success later in life. The ideals of teamwork, discipline, responsibility, perseverance through adversity and goal setting are all examples of important concepts taught to our young people through the outstanding leadership provided by our principals, athletic directors and teacher/coaches. I look forward to the outstanding competition that is to come and seeing our young people pursue and realize their dreams. Let us all pledge to continue to support and celebrate them today, tomorrow and always. All the best,
Rob Wigod Commissioner of Athletics
WELCOME
Welcome to the CIF Southern Section - FORD Championship Finals.
The CIF Southern Section's 26th Annual Commissioner's Cup crowned two past champions in identifying the top competitive programs of 2016-2017 On the girl's side, Santa Margarita took top honors by scoring 15.5 points in the manner of three championship trophies for the second straight year. The Eagles finished the year with a champion title in the sports of swimming/diving, track and field and volleyball. This is the school's record leading sixth Commissioner's Cup title. Sierra Canyon's second place finish, consisted of 13 points credited to championships in soccer, volleyball, and a second place finish in softball. taking third place by tiebreaker was Mater Dei with 12 points. The Monarchs claimed a title in volleyball, second place in soccer along with semifinal appearances in track & field and water polo. On the boy’s side, Oaks Christian claimed their fourth Commissioner’s Cup title in the school’s history with 15 points. The Lions did so by winning three championships in golf, track & field, and water polo. The Lions won their first Commissioner Cup title since 2008 and did so by way of championships due to a tiebreaker as well. By virtue of not one but two tiebreakers, defending Commission’s Cup Champions of last year, Loyola finished in second place also with 15 points. The first tiebreaker is based upon playoff appearances for the school year in all sports (individual qualification on sports not included). Oaks Christian and Loyola remained tied with 6 playoff appearances each, in that situation the school with the most championships is awarded the top selection. The Cubs won one championship in the sport of golf with second place finishes in swimming & diving, volleyball, and semifinals appearances in basketball and water polo. St. John Bosco finishes in third place with 14 points. The Braves won championships in football and wrestling along with semifinal appearances in baseball and water polo. The CIF-SS developed this recognition program based upon comprehensive excellence in interscholastic competition. The purpose of this program is to enhance the spirit of competition, sportsmanship, and good-will among the student athletes and member schools. The winners are determined by a point system that provides: five points for a divisional championship; three points for a divisional runner-up finish; two points for advancing to the semifinal round or a third place finish in a team-place finish sport (i.e. cross country, golf, swimming and diving, track and field); and one point for a fourth place finish in a team-place finish sport. In cases where a tie occurs the top ten schools were determined by several tiebreaker methods. “We applaud the accomplishments of these programs due to their hard work and dedication that has resulted in their success,” said Rob Wigod, Commissioner of Athletics.
