CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE STUDENT ATHLETES, COACHES, AND SCHOOL COMMUNITIES ON YOUR QUALIFICATION TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS YEAR’S CIF SOUTHERN SECTION FORD CHAMPIONSHIPS! THE QUALITY OF COMPETITION IN THE SOUTHERN SECTION IS UNMATCHED ANYWHERE IN THE STATE OR THE COUNTRY, FOR THAT MATTER SO MAKING IT INTO THE POST SEASON IS QUITE AN ACCOMPLISHMENT THAT EACH OF YOU SHOULD BE VERY PROUD OF.

I WANT TO THANK OUR ATHLETES AND COACHES IN ADVANCE FOR DEMONSTRATING THE HIGHEST LEVELS OF SPORTSMANSHIP AND CHARACTER WHILE COMPETING. PARTICIPATION IN OUR CHAMPIONSHIP PLAYOFFS IS AN EXTRAORDINARY HONOR TO BE ENJOYED AND EMBRACED. COACH COOMBS BEGAN HIS CAREER UNDER STEVE WHITE AT SUNNY HILLS HIGH SCHOOL AFTER GRADUATING FROM CAL STATE FULLERTON. COOMBS SPENT 38 YEARS AS A TEACHER, HEAD COACH, AND ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATOR, ALL IN THE SANTA ANA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT, SANTA ANA, CENTURY, AND GODINEZ HIGH SCHOOLS. AS A HEAD COACH, COOMBS AMASSED 628 CAREER VICTORIES AND 10 LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS (4 @ SANTA ANA), 4 @ CENTURY, 2 @ GODINEZ). HIS TEAMS ADVANCED TO THE CIF-SS PLAYOFFS 32 TIMES IN 37 VARSITY SEASONS. IN 2018, HE WAS ONE OF THIRTEEN COACHES IN CALIFORNIA TO BE PRESENTED THE STATE CIF “MODEL COACH” AWARD FROM THE CIF STATE OFFICE. IN 2003, HE WAS NAMED ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER’S “COACH OF THE YEAR” AND HAS TWICE BEEN SELECTED TO COACH IN AN ORANGE COUNTY ALL-STAR GAME. IN 2018 HE WAS INDUCTED INTO THE SANTA ANA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT “HALL OF FAME”. HE WAS NAMED 2006-07 CENTURY HIGH SCHOOL “TEACHER OF THE YEAR”. COOMBS SERVED AS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR AT CENTURY HIGH AND GODINEZ HIGH FOR OVER 15 YEARS. IN 2015 HE WA DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION (CSADA) - SOUTHERN SECTION “ATHLETIC DIRECTOR OF THE YEAR”. HE WAS THE 2008 RECIPIENT OF THE CSADA, NORM MACKENZIE DISTINGUISHED LEADERSHIP AWARD. HE HAS SERVED ON THE EXECUTIVE BOARD OF THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA INTERSCHOLASTIC BASKETBALL COACHES ASSOCIATION (SCIBCA) SINCE 1988. COOMBS HAS SERVED TWO TERMS AS THE ASSOCIATION’S PRESIDENT AND HAS ACTED AS THE ASSOCIATION’S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SINCE 2011. COOMBS IS RETIRED BUT REMAINS EXTREMELY ACTIVE SERVING ON MULTIPLE CIF-SS COMMITTEES INCLUDING THE CIF-SS COACHES ADVISORY BOARD AND SITE COORDINATOR FOR THE CIF-SS BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS. COOMBS IS MARRIED TO WIFE LINDA AND HAS TWO DAUGHTERS – LINDSEY AND HANNAH –AND IS BLESSED WITH GRANDCHILDREN WILLOW, AUTUMN, AND WREN, ALONG WITH SON-IN-LAWS BRAVEN AND DILLON.

C PRICE HIGH IN LOS ANGELES FOR 19 SEASONS. UNDER HIS LEADERSHIP, THE BOYS’ BASKETBALL PROGRAM BECAME NATIONALLY KNOWN AND HAD AN IMPRESSIVE TRACK RECORD OF 11 LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS, 13 CIF CHAMPIONSHIP APPEARANCES, 10 CIF CHAMPIONSHIPS, 8 REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS AND 6 STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS. TO DATE, THE KNIGHTS HOLD THE RECORD AS THE ONLY ONE OF TWO SCHOOLS TO WIN 4 CONSECUTIVE BOYS BASKETBALL STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS IN ALL OF CIF HISTORY. HIS NEXT COACHING ASSIGNMENT WAS AT LA SALLE PREPARATORY HIGH SCHOOL IN PASADENA. IN HIS FIRST SEASON, COACH LYNCH LED THE LANCERS TO THEIR FIRST CIF CHAMPIONSHIP GAME IN 54 YEARS. FOR THE NEXT 7 YEARS, UNDER HIS TENURE, LA SALLE VARSITY BASKETBALL NEVER MISSED QUALIFYING FOR THE CIF-SS PLAY-OFFS. COACH LYNCH HAS ACCUMULATED OVER 600 WINS. FOR A CONSECUTIVE 25 YEARS, HIS TEAMS HAVE QUALIFIED FOR THE CIF PLAYOFFS. OUT OF THE OVER 250 YOUNG MEN THAT HE HAS COACHED, 35 HAVE RECEIVED SCHOLARSHIPS TO MANY WELL-KNOWN COLLEGES ACROSS THE COUNTRY. HIS PLAYERS HAVE RECEIVED SEVERAL NOTABLE AWARDS, INCLUDING CIF STATE PLAYER OF THE YEAR, ALL STATE PLAYER OF THE YEAR, GATORADE PLAYER OF THE YEAR, MR. BASKETBALL OF CALIFORNIA, AND THE JOHN R. WOODEN AWARD. SEVERAL OF HIS PLAYERS HAVE GONE ON TO PLAY PROFESSIONALLY OVERSEAS AND IN THE NBA. COACH LYNCH HAS BEEN HONORED AS COACH OF THE YEAR BY THE CIF-SS, SCIBCA, THE LOS ANGELES TIMES, THE WAVE NEWSPAPER, AND THE PASADENA STAR NEWS. IN JUNE OF 2022, HE RECEIVED THE ULTIMATE ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF HIS HIGH SCHOOL COACHING CAREER BY BEING INDUCTED INTO THE CALIFORNIA INTERSCHOLASTIC FEDERATION-SOUTHERN SECTION COACH’S HALL OF FAME. IN ADDITION TO COACHING, COACH LYNCH WAS A LOS ANGELES POLICE OFFICER. “DETECTIVE” LYNCH RETIRED FROM THE LAPD AFTER OVER 15 YEARS OF SERVICE TO HIS COMMUNITY AND VOLUNTEERED FOR THE LAPD AS A “RESERVE” FOR AN ADDITIONAL SEVEN YEARS. COACH LYNCH HAS BEEN MARRIED TO HIS WIFE BECKY FOR OVER 43 YEARS. THE COUPLE HAVE THREE GROWN CHILDREN, SON MYCHAL (MARRIED TO WAMBUI), TWIN DAUGHTERS ANGEL AND ASHLEE AND TWO GRANDSONS, MYCHAL, JR. AND MATTHEW.

A 1981 GRADUATE OF DOWNEY HIGH SCHOOL, HE WAS IMMEDIATELY HIRED BY THE SCHOOL TO BE THE COACH OF THE SOPHOMORE TEAM AT THE AGE OF 18. COACH SHELTON WOULD COACH THERE FOR THE NEXT 41 YEARS, INCLUDING 35 AS THE HEAD VARSITY BASKETBALL COACH. COACH SHELTON COMPILED A CAREER RECORD OF 551 WINS AND 399 LOSSES AT THE VARSITY LEVEL. HE WON FOUR SAN GABRIEL VALLEY LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS AND ONE GATEWAY LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP. DURING THE 2022-23 SEASON HE COACHED VIKINGS TO A SCHOOL RECORD 26 WINS IN HIS FINAL YEAR OF COACHING AND TEACHING. DURING HIS TENURE HE LED HIS TEAMS TO THE CIF-SS PLAYOFFS IN 29 OF HIS 35 SEASONS AS HEAD COACH. He Served on the SCIBCA Board for five years, including serving as the Coordinator of Division 1 Boys Basketball for 2 years.

WIARD’S TEAMS WERE CIF-SS CHAMPIONS FIVE TIMES; CIF-SS RUNNER-UPS TWO TIMES; CIF STATE CHAMPIONS 2 TIMES; CIFSTATERUNNER-UPSTHREETIMES.COACHWIARD’S2005TEAMFINISHEDAPERFECT35-0. RICHARD WIARD MARVIN

COACH MARVIN WILLIAMS GRADUATED FROM PERRIS HIGH SCHOOL IN 1977. THAT YEAR HE WAS THE STARTING POINT GUARD ON A PERRIS TEAM THAT CLAIMED A CIF-SS TITLE. AFTER ATTENDING SOUTHWEST BAPTIST COLLEGE IN BOLIVAR, MISSOURI HE OBTAINED AN ASSISTANT BASKETBALL COACHING POSITION UNDER HEAD COACH MIKE BARTEE FOR THE JW NORTH BOYS’ TEAM DURING THE 1983-1984 SEASON. THAT YEAR THE HUSKIES WOULD GO ON TO CLAIM THE CIF-SS 3-A TITLE. IN 1989 HE ACCEPTED THE POSITION OF HEAD GIRLS’ BASKETBALL COACH FOR HIS ALMA MATER, PERRIS HIGH SCHOOL. DURING HIS TIME AT THE HELM OF THE PANTHERS HE LED THE PROGRAM TO 20 LEAGUE TITLES, CIF-SS PLAYOFF APPEARANCES AND SIX CIF STATE QUALIFICATIONS. HE PRODUCED OVER 25 COLLEGIATE ATHLETES, 18 OF WHICH PLAYED AT THE DIVISION 1 LEVEL. THREE OF HIS FORMER PLAYERS went on to play professional basketball (Maylana Martin, Aishah Sutherland and Angie Ned). He holds more than 625 wins during his tenure as a head coach, all at Perris High School.
