Congratulations to all the student athletes, coaches, and school communities on your qualification to participate in this year’s CIF Southern Section Ford Championships!

The quality of competition in the Southern Section is unmatched anywhere in the state or the country, for that matter so making it into the post season is quite an accomplishment that each of you should be very proud of.

I want to thank our athletes and coaches in advance for demonstrating the highest levels of sportsmanship and character while competing. Sportsmanship, ethical conduct, and fair play are foundational principles that the CIF is built upon, and it is always great to see a closely contested match where mutual respect and appreciation are exhibited. COACH PRANGE WAS NAMED THE 1998 ORANGE COUNTY “COACH OF THE YEAR ”

COACH PRANGE SPENT A DECADE ON THE SCIBCA EXECUTIVE BOARD AND SERVED AS THE SCIBCA PRESIDENT FOR TWO YEARS.

BESIDES BEING THE HEAD BASKETBALL COACH, ED SERVED EIGHT YEARS AS THE LOARA HIGH ATHLETIC DIRECTOR. WHEN A CHEER ADVISOR COULDN’T BE FOUND, COACH PRANGE COVERED THAT POSITION FOR 10 YEARS AS WELL.

HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES 2025

Coach Kevin Kiernan finished his 17th season at Mater Dei High School in 2023-24 and retired at the end of that year

The Monarchs finished 25-8 that season and Coach Kiernan was named the 2024 Orange County Register Coach of the Year and was selected Coach of the Jordan Brand Classic in Brooklyn New York.

Coach Kiernan was also named the 2024 WBCA Pat Summit National Coach of the Year At Mater Dei Coach Kiernan won two National Championships three State Championships six CIF Championships six Southern California Regional Championships and 17 straight Trinity League titles

Coach Kiernan won six State Championships and 12 CIF Titles overall and is the all-time winningest girls’ basketball coach in California History with 900 wins In 2011 Coach Kiernan was selected as the Orange County Register and Los Angeles Times Coach of the Year, as well as the CIF Division 1AA Coach of the Year and the National High School Coaches Association National Coach of the Year

In 17 years at Mater Dei Coach Kiernan's teams are 474-62 and he owns a 962-193 career record (Boys and Girls Varsity Head Coach) In 2011 Mater Dei became the first girls’ basketball team in five years to finish No 1 in the USA Today Super 25 in consecutive seasons, and the newspaper also named Coach Kiernan its National Coach of the Year in 2010 Further in 2006 Coach Kiernan was named the WBCA High School Coach of the Year

While at Troy High School, Coach Kiernan had 24 of his players go on to play college basketball and has sent 40+ Mater Dei players to the college ranks

While head coach at Troy High School in Fullerton Kiernan the 2006 WBCA Russell Athletic National High School Coach of the Year, coached both the girls' and boys' teams Kiernan had been the girls' coach at Troy from 1996 till 2006 and had a 291-30 overall record that included 100 straight Freeway League wins and an appearance in the CIF-SS finals in eight of his last nine years

He was also a head women's basketball coach at Cypress College from 1992-98 He also coached at California Polytechnic College in Pomona In 2025 he was inducted into the Southern California Basketball Hall of Fame

KEVIN KIERNAN

In March, Melissa Hearlihy culminated her illustrious tenure with the Wolverines by winning the CIF Division II State Championship. Hearlihy leaves Harvard-Westlake as one of the most distinguished coaches in California Interscholastic Federation history.

Hearlihy led the Wolverines to two State Championships, four CIF Southern Section Championships, two CIF State Open Division Southern Regional finals, and nine Mission League titles Her 839 career wins places her second all-time in California state history among all girls’ high school basketball coaches

Hearlihy's success at Harvard-Westlake included the mentorship of countless athletes who reached their full potential both on and off the court Under her guidance, 18 Harvard-Westlake studentathletes went on to play college basketball

Hearlihy has been named the CIF Southern Section, LA Daily News, and LA Times Coach of the Year on six occasions along with Cal-Hi state coach of the year in 2010 In 2023, Coach Hearlihy received the highest honor in being named the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association National High School Coach of the year

Of her retirement, Melissa says, “My career has been so full of meaningful relationships with colleagues, student-athletes and families that words cannot do justice ” “Dedicating my professional career to high school has always been with the goal of developing young girls into confident and determined young women, giving them the opportunity to find success on and off the floor,” added Hearlihy “I am leaving with great love for my extended basketball family and the communities I’ve served ”

HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES

Coach Harvey Kitani graduated from California State University at Long Beach in 1978 and earned his teaching credential that year In 1995 he added a master’s degree from California State University at Los Angeles

Harvey coached at Fairfax High School for 35 years before moving to Rolling Hills

Prep nine years ago His overall record stands at 979-316

Coach Kitani’s teams have claimed 29 league championships; 20 at Fairfax and nine at Rolling Hills Prep

He has coached teams to California state championships in 2004 2007 2017 He won four CIF Los Angeles City Section titles in 1985, 1987, 2007 and, 2015 In 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021 his RHP squads claimed CIF-SS championships

Coach Kitani is an eight-time Coach of the Year; in 1985, 1987, 2007, 2015 at Fairfax and in 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2021 at Rolling Hills Prep

Kitani also earned the 2004 John Wooden National Coach of Year; the 2005 Calif State Coaches Association Coach of Year; and the 2010 NHSCA National Coach of Year. In 2025 he was inducted into the Southern California Basketball Hall of Fame

Mike Le Duc is a proud graduate of the University of California at Riverside

This year Mike completed his 51st season coaching at the high school level 45 as a head coach In that time, he has spent 17 years at Damien and 28 years at Glendora High Schools

Coach Le Duc has an overall record of 1094-279 -- 692 wins at Glendora and 402 at Damien During that time his teams have claimed 17 League Championships; four CIF Southern Section titles; two CIF Southern Regional victories; and one CIF State Championship Mike has122 playoff wins His teams have advanced to the CIF-SS finals eight times and the semifinals 20 Coach LeDuc as coached two players who have gone on to play in the NBA Tracy Murray and Casey Jacobson He has coached 57 players who have participated at the NCAA Division 1 level and has mentored an estimated 150 players that have played at the college level Coach LeDuc's teams have won 20 games or more in a season 36 times, 25 games or more 24 times He is a past President of the Southern California Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association (SCIBCA) However, he is "most proud of having the opportunity to spend over 50 years doing what I've always wanted to do coaching great student-athletes working with fantastic assistant coaches and so many school staff members that are dedicated to the best interest of students ” In 2025 he was inducted into the Southern California Basketball Hall of Fame

The Mater Dei Boys Basketball program is renowned throughout the nation

Coach Gary McKnight has cultivated this outstanding program for 42 years with a winning record through the 2023-24 season of 1 272-140 (#3 All-Time Nationally) He currently stands at 1,294-148 as of February 18

Coach McKnight got his 1275th career win on December 3rd passing former DeMatha coach Morgan Wootten and moving him into second place on the national all-time list for boys basketball victories

Coach McKnight has a tradition of Success that includes:

11 State Titles (Back to Back to Back 2011-2014)

16 CIF Southern California Regional Titles (Five Straight 2011-2015) 24 CIF-SS Titles

40 eague Titles in 42 Years The Monarchs have been led by Head Coach Gary McKnight since 1982 Under Coach McKnight’s tenure the Monarchs have had nine players compete in the NBA 25 Monarchs have been named CIF Players of the Year, with 2 Monarchs being named Gatorade State Players of the Year
