The Flavors And Smells Of A Family Immortalized By Smoke

In the high mountains of Salcedo, Hermanas Mirabal province, in the very heart of the northern mountain range of the Dominican Republic, is located a community called La Finca. It was there that a man with a strong, hardworking and disciplined character made the land give birth with a ‘machete’ and as a result of this effort and love for life, together with his wife, they raised an 11 children family. These wonderful human beings were Don Ramón Eugenio Fernández and Felicia Camilo.

From the relationship of one of the 11 children of Ramón and Felicia; the charismatic Ramón Antonio and a young worker named María Francisca arrived, who would be considered the twelfth child of this already wide family. A little boy with fair skin, blond, restless, moreover, who would inherit the hardworking and disciplined character of his grandparents, the undeniable charisma of his father and the human sense of his mother; this little boy would bear the family names Fernández Acosta and would be called Fredy Ramón.

Fredy was left in charge of his grandparents, who smoked tobacco in different ways: artisan cigars, andullo tobacco, and chopped tobacco, wrapped in orange leaves, called ‘pirulí’(lollipop). This is why each memory, teaching, learning gained from his grandparents became an unforgettable event for the young Fernández Acosta, who, as well explained by the different studies on olfactory memory, remained eternally associated with the smells emanating from tobacco smoked by his “old men”.

As a restless and rebellious young man, intelligent and insightful, dedicated and persistent; Fredy, a tireless worker, has walked the world in different educational, protest, political and social adventures. In each of these he has been accompanied by a cigar and sometimes a good glass of wine or whiskey. All these experiences awakened in his heart the desire to unite these adventures with the love and discipline of his grandparents in what so many memories brought to his mind, the tobacco smoke.

That’s why Fredy Fernández sought to breathe, in each tobacco plantation he visited; the aroma that he breathed so many times during his childhood in his grandparents’ arms, in each seed that he saw germinate; he remembered the social demands for which he fought so hard and the hopes that he kept in his heart for a better society. Fredy in each plant that his hands touched and that he brought closer to his face; he could feel and relive those passions of his youth and those teachings that have made him who he is today.

Together with his team, he managed to turn these smells, flavors and experiences into perfect and exquisite mixtures; which he has made available to the great smokers of the world, By Fernández.
