Every month this year, I plan to change my social networks avatar to a cool, inspirational, wildly sexy, or just down right radically cute picture. I am in love with this months avatar ! It is sexy on all accounts.

Editor’s Letter

Hello 2012! Alas! My second favorite season of the year has arrived, and I am super

excited about this issue! Some exciting changes, tweaks, and shift in emphasis, but still the same core. When I started the CilaneLetter five months ago, it was my intention to give readers and writers a different, yet thorough experience. But after learning In-design and Photoshop, I attempted to create a faux-magazine, thinking, “that is what people like to see...right?”. It wasn’t until a recent question was thrown at me, and got me thinking: “How can we call them our readers, if we barely have any words? In a typical magazine you often flip through pages of the top designers recent ad campaigns, or an editors suggestion on what you should pick up the next time your out shopping, but never enough words. The “meat” is a word-anaology I coined, referring to the content in a article that paints a picture, more vivid than any DSLR camera could ever take. I love words, because words are a direct tunnel to our thoughts and feelings. So I want to dedicate this issue 3 to all the free thinking editors, poets, journalist, and creative writers all around the world. And make a toast-to keeping the CilaneLetter authentic and sincere, a publication filled with real emotions and stories, from people just like you and I. Cheers! We now have a New Year. A year full of hope... Hope for things to be better, more solid, and more complete in the future. Hip-Hip-Ho ray! Christmas In Paris Vernon Hillcrest

T

he book and the play are always better than the movie Evan! teased Citireal as she held tight to his hand, carefully maneuvering out of the Le’ Montreil theater elevator, into the crystal lit lobby. She can barely contain her excitement after seeing Javert’ chase ex-con Jean-Valjean across France in Victor Hugo’s masterpiece play “Les Miserables”. Exchanging pleasantries with everyone that passes, her Lamberston Truex heels click rapidly over the uneven cobble stoned streets. In a cardigan trimmed in gold, Etienne Aigner trench coat with matching gloves and Dior pumps, she is completely in her element. “Christmas in Paris is exactly what I needed” she said cheerfully, looking directly into the eyes of the only man who knew how to bring out the little kid in her. Evan, her beau of 15 months today hails a cab and hurriedly

guides her inside, as this is the last night they have to spend in Paris and he has no intention of missing the last showing of Giorgia Vasaris art exhibit. His classical antiquity and startling images of life, will amazes even the most casual observer. Traversing slowly through traffic, they take in the sophisticated beauty of the most romantic vacation they have spent together. Bells were ringing atop handlebars as bicyclist raced by trying to avoid a collision. Lovers lined the sidewalk, hand in hand and sat gracefully at every cafe patio in a 5 mile stretch, displaying their everlasting love for one another. “Look” says Citireal pointing ahead--the museum looms larger than life just ahead of them. It’s snowing, and Cit is grinning with childlike enthusiasm, as her eyes take in the beauty. Evan pays for the cab before heading over to take position in the line that has extended almost a block. Snowflakes, the size of

autumn leaves fall into her hair and onto the ground, bringing with it a chilly whisper, causing Citireal to burry into Evans embrace. “Kiss me poppa” she purrs, tilting her face up to a perfect angle to meet his lips. The non-transferable lipstick that coats her lips, glows a smooth cherrybomb red. He traces the outline of her lips with his tongue, tasting vanilla and chocolate from the coffee they stopped for earlier. Parting her lips, he sucks lightly on the bottom until he hears a soft moan escape from the back of her throat and feels her pulling back an inch. Catching her lip in between his teeth he tugs gently as to let her know, there is no escaping. What felt like only a few stolen minutes, was enough to leave a big gap in front of them in line, as the other patrons maneuvered around them, instead of interrupting the sweetest kiss. Finally reaching the front of the line and entering the

lobby, Evan immediately moved to the left, silently sending up a prayer as he peeps a private corner that is poorly lit behind them. He grabs Citireal’s arm toward him and pulls her violently close to his chest. Turning around, as to shield her by his towering 6’5 frame he tugs and unsnaps a few buttons on her trench coat, in a haste to get to her silk fabrics underneath. The dress is a Roberto Cavalli number, cherry black, and a clinging fit for her 5’4 frame. He looks her over, from head to toe, what a beautiful sight he thinks to himself. He looks into her eyes, simultaneously dropping down on his right knee. “There is no place I’d rather be C--, will you marry me?” * The names and events that take place in this story are fiction based.

he soft illuminating light from the digital clock on the dresser next to the bed, bathes my face in an easy florescent blue hue. My blackberry rest next to the clock as I glare at it every few minutes to see if it’s lighting up--no such luck. You know the feeling you get when you’ve misplaced something and you’re looking in places you know you’d never put it, simply for the sake of looking? I sort of feel like that. I crane my neck towards any queer sound that may imply you’ve closed the front door behind you, and have returned home for the evening. The coolness from the thousand count linen sheets help to keep me awake. My ipod is on shuffle, and Joss Stone is beg-

ging and pleading with someone to turn his life around. I’m not really into lighting candles, but it reminds me of you, so I get up and put flame to two candles that I have especially made for you. A unique blend of fragrances I created and named “Autumn”. Sitting at the foot of the bed, at the edge of the mattress, images of you traverse through my mind. Like someone who has come out of a coma, and in trying to regain their memory, only bits and pieces of their life flashing across the screen. Your smile. That laugh. The way you string words, thoughts , and phrases together so effortlessly. You’re such a flirt. I can see you now making direct eye contact,”If you’re going to lie to me, look me in my eyes and do it”. Your lips spreading slowly, revealing those pretty white teeth.

Bob Marly and Lauryn Hill are now seeping through the speakers, Bob wanting to turn the lights down low. Standing up, clad only in black Ellen boxer briefs, I make my way to the bathroom and splash cold water on my face. Wide awake now, I make sure to place the towel back onto the towel rack, departmnent store perfect, knowing you’ll have my head otherwise. From the top shelf of my closet, I retrieve

an Altoids can, and proceed to clumsily roll a zig zag. My nerves somewhat settled, I power up my PC in an attempt to pass time. I blog a picture I snapped of you sleeping last night, your hair covering half your face, in perfect heavenly peace. I then buy you those Gucci heels you wanted on Thursday, but couldn’t get because the boutique didn’t have your size, and finally pay some bills. Wait.I hear a noise from outisde the bedroom door. Your’re home! I can hear your padded foot steps as you make your way to the bedroom, your bangles fighting each other on your wrist, seeing who can make the most noise. You peek into the bedroom and see me, and utter the most beautiful word ...”daddy...”

n this enchanted forest your silk scarf billows gently in the breeze. Of the little people, only their eyes can be seen, concealing themselves within the trees. They chatter excitedly amongst themselves, revealing their faces now, pointed ears, you turn to me and say “ baby, they look like elves”. They jump from the two trees, using the branches to help propel forward. Eyes wide, you point, fit to scream, “baby I feel like I’m 16” It looks like just like the sand castle you build as a little girl, only thing missing is the boat that sat in the moat. A winding staircase leads to the upper level, spacious with an airy feeling, crystal chandelier hangs from the ceiling, “you can decorate it anyway you want momma”. A 20 x 20 fish tank sits at the foot of the bed, eyes wide, you point, fit to scream, “baby I feel like I’m 16” This next couple deserves much more than this award, their charitable work abroad in Belize and Nigeria have inspired even me, now even I believe. Together they can

If you strut through Hollywood, Las Vegas, NYC, Miami, or Chicago on an given Saturday night, you will undoubtedly hear the night come to life. The percussion, horns, synthesizers, will become a sound familiar to your ears, because these are the sounds that move the city. For a long time nightclubs were fueled by the celebrities, drugs, or by the fashion. But now, stars from the silver screen decked in the latest designer fabrics, and the finest white powder surging through their veins, find themselves on the outside of the velvet ropes. That’s not cool, that’s not now, that’s just predictable and that’s just yesterday. Fast forward 5 minutes, the door man does his trendy hand shake, pseudo chest bump with some skinny jean wearing, tatted up, rebel-rock looking character and his entourage slides right in the door--no questions asked. Who is this guy? What has he done? And why the hell is he given the royal treatment? He is not a superstar!

The DJ, now has become the focus of partygoers and music enthusiasts worldwide. The DJ, creates the soundstage for the night’s we never want to forget, even when the Jack Daniel’s regretfully erases most of our memories. Surprisingly, we always, even if faintly recall hitting the dance floor, raising our hands to the ceiling, or standing on tabletops losing our inhibitions to the sound of a bass line. Maya Angelou once said, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” She must have known some pretty amazing DJs in her time. The DJ is responsible for the lasting feelings that make all the hangovers, the ridiculous bar tabs, and the waiting in lines worthwhile.

Correct, he is the DJ. He sits solely at the epicenter of the music industry and nightlife scene all across the world. His powers? Omniscient, omnipotent, and supremely benevolent, he is the DJ.

The DJ is the headliner, the DJ is the trendsetter, and the DJ is the GOD of nightlife. All praises to the DJ.

The promoters need the DJ. The clubs need the DJ. The industry needs the DJ. He who

inema opens doors; it’s a gift. At age nine, I fell in love with Shakespeare not because of his language, not because of his characters, not because of his plots – the things for which I would later grow to deeply admire and appreciate and find inspirational – but because I happened to see the 1996 feature-length film adaptation of his most popular comedy, “Twelfth Night”; I fell in love with the full package, the full Shakespearean experience, which was presented to me through the medium – the gift – of cinema. Cinema allowed me, as a young child, to experience the full emotional impact of the play without having to intellectually understand exactly what was happening. The combination of brilliant filmmaking and Shakespeare’s original text did what art should do – it piqued my curiosity, provoked my intellect, challenged me to think and feel. My goal, as a filmmaker, is to continue in this tradition, to not only create entertainment that entertains, but to create art that challenges me as a director, challenges my actors as storytellers, challenges my audience as participants. When I graduated from the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts last May, I had to decide: Should I be a cog in the wheel of an elaborate machine or a filmmaker? I could either spend decades of my life climbing a ladder that isn’t necessarily guaranteed to get me where I want to go, or I could simply go there. And what that meant is that I had to actually make movies, not just sit around waiting for something to happen. Knowing that my first feature-length film would be an absolute *itch to produce, and that I would most likely be producing on my own, I had to choose a story that I not only felt passionate about, and knew inside and out, but a story that would very easily lend itself to filmmaking, something that would be hugely enhanced by the visual resources offered by cinema.

“LOVE: As You Like It” is a sexy, bold re-imagining of Shakespeare’s romantic comedy, “As You Like It,” set in modern-day San Francisco’s hip and diverse Mission District. The screenplay for “LOVE: As You Like It” runs just under ninety pages, uses Shakespeare’s text, and has been majorly abridged from the original; it’s a cross between the emotionally-bold performances and visual aesthetic of Baz Luhrmann’s “Romeo + Juliet,” and the joyful sexiness of Richard Curtis’ “Love Actually.” The story follows free-spirited Rosalind who falls for the wrong boy, and her beautiful, lovelorn cousin, Celia, as they run away from Celia’s father and move to the city to experience life at its fullest. Disguised as hipsters, and joined by their rich cousin, Touchstone, they meet a dynamic cast of characters who are all grappling with this idea of Love – what it means to love, to be loved, to overcome fear in order to love; love for ideology, love for oneself, for one’s partner, and family, and friends. I can’t even begin to articulate how badly I want to make this film; it’s the last thing on my mind at night, and the first thing on my mind in the morning. “All the world’s a stage, / And all the men and women merely players.” “LOVE: As You Like It” needs these players to be more than merely the director, the actor, the crew member; this film needs you, the audience, to participate in its creation. When this film enters the festival circuit, it will be due to the commitment and support of hundreds of Shakespeare and indie-film enthusiasts around the country. hot seat: Q&A CLN:When did you decided to go red? ROGUE :When I was 19 I left everything I knew back home, moved to LA, chopped off my long curly locks and colored my hair red! CLN:Your sound is very soulful, where do you draw your musical inspiration from? R: God instilled this old soul in me. My inspirations come from all angles, but most the time I listen to neo soul artists like Lauryn, India and Corinne Bailey. I’m also into old school hip hop like Mos Def and Talib Kweli. Anything that’s real and substantial. CLN:How often do you color your hair? R: That’s a ‘Rouge’ secret! I am also a cosmetologist so I have my own magic ‘Rouge’ formulas. CLN: Favorite body wash? R: Caress - Tahitian Renewal. I’m an exfoliant lover lol CLN: Walmart of Target? R:Whichever one is closest at my time of need. Walmarts are scarce in LA though, so lately its been Target. CLN: How would you describe your accessoriy line Bullets and Bows in 5 words? R: Bold. Unique. Inovative. Refreshing. Supercalifragilisticexpialadocious CLN: Are you single? Married? Engaged? (yes we want to know and so do the fellas!) R: The question of the century! I’m a very private person when it comes to that topic .. lets just say I’m happy [; CLN: Favorite venue to perform at in Los Angeles? R: The local open mic spots. Big shows are fun, but I love intimate atmospheres. I’m all about the vibe. CLN: If you had to open up for an artist who would it be? R: I would have to go with John Legend. Now that is a talented man CLN: Are you originally form Los Angeles? if not where and when did you relocate from. R: Have you ever felt the spontaneous urge to pack up all that you could carry and go start a new life somewhere fresh and new? Well, that is exactly what I did! I was raised in north county San Diego and have been in

LA since I was 19. CLN: If you could collaborate with one male and one female artist, shout them out. R: Thats a tough one. If MJ and Amy Whinehouse were an option I’d choose them. May they rest in heaven. CLN: What albums did you vibe out to this year? R: There wasn’ t very much new music that hit the spot for me this year except for Adele’s new album. Her old one was dope too though. I usually just stick to the good music I already know, no matter how old it is. CLN: Good Girl Gone Bad? or Rad Ass Chick? R: I’m just me. I can be good, I can be bad, and I can be rad! CLN:Most memorable music moment for you? R: May 24th, 2011; Not only did I celebrate my 24th birthday, but I released my very first musical project titled “L.I.F.E”. CLN: How do you want to be remembered as an artist when it’s curtains? R: I want the music I make to be timeless. Being acknowledged and respected for the messages I bring and the way I bring ‘em! CLN: Open up the Grammys or close out the show? Message to our readers by Modisty Johnson

Diving into the New Year I am both anxious and excited for what’s in store for fashion and CilaneNior. I have learned it’s better to stay quietly in-the-know and function, rather than “Talk that talk without producing results”. I made a list of things I want to accomplish this year, both as a designer and young business professional, and enjoy every moment I spend working to see my ideas through to fruition. It’s been two years since the birth of CilaneNior, a one year since the launch of clnprint.com and now our third issue of the CilaneLetter, and I couldn’t feel any better! As we waved goodbye to 2011 and said hello to 2012, I have seen people, places and things both come and go. The year has left me with pleasant memories, and a suitcase full of task yet to be achieved, but my vision is as clear as a closet, after a good spring clean. I didn’t envision 2011 being the year of such growth and change within the firm, but fortunately for my team and I, we have adopted new business strategies, and implemented sure-fire project and campaign ideas that yield the necessary results. Our marketing and PR coordinators keep us on our toes and challenge themselves to adopt the skills that are proven to yield results and cast away the ones that don’t. Collectively, we have recycled some very useful advice and personal testimonies that have helped us all become better business professionals. CilaneNior is thankful for the amazing journey and grateful for those individuals and brands we have represented and collaborated with from the beginning. We welcome our new clients, colleagues, staff, readers, and friends and look forward to making history with you all in 2012. She was born in Tehran, Iran, and until she was one year of age her family immigrated to the United States. It was this formative moment that Ms. Azimi realized she had to follow her dreams. This time, the line has grown to become fuller, mature and beaming with elegance. From the LBD with sheer décolletage and sleeves to the floral maxi dress, it’s a testament that Ms. Azimi unearthed the nature of femininity. PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUCEMENT Devon Poer and Kelsi Smith have united their skill sets to create the Los Angeles Fashion Council, the goal of which is to elevate and support Los Angeles fashion design through a unified council of key individuals within the industry. Our goal is to provide a platform for presentation on a local, national and international level, as well as education and support. Our first objective is to raise awareness of Los Angeles fashion and the talent that resides here - by taking them away from Los Angeles and celebrating their work on a global platform, and in turn, promoting the industry here as a whole. This begins with taking five talented individuals to London, this February, to showcase their work in a three day show room and salon show format. Four designers have been pre-selected to join us, Mila Hermanovski, Bryan Hearns, Curly V and Alana Hale. The fifth designer will be chosen through a Facebook contest and subsequent panel decision.
