IO-Link point to point parameterisation and communication for sensors and actuators

Low cost upgrade to use additional features. Sensors and actuators could already be IO-Link enabled. No new PLC software required for basic implementation.

Simple replacement of devices without technical know-how. Set complete lines up for different products at the push of a button. Check device compliance/compatibility.

Get a process value from a digital proximity switch. Get flow, temperature and alarm on one wire from a flow meter. Expensive analogue cards can be removed as value sent digitally. Standard process devices - no longer need field bus specific devices to get the same benefits. Error checking between IO-Link device and master means that standard cables can be used without effecting the networks resilience to EMC and random noise.

A heart beat signal between device and master checks online status and reports via code if there is a change of state. Digital I/O splitter devices provide short circuit detection. Automatic parameter setting feature can be set to check that the connected device is correct e.g. prevent replacement of a pressure transmitter with a unit rated at a lower pressure range.

Inductive sensors

24

Visit www.ifm.com for full product details and accessories

Sensors are necessary in all automated processes to provide the PLC with information; inductive sensors supply the necessary signals for positions and limits, or serve as pulse pick-ups for counting tasks or for monitoring rotational speed. They offer ideal characteristics compared to mechanical switches: non-contact operation free from any wear and tear, high switching frequencies and precision. In addition, they are insensitive to vibration, dust, oil and moisture. Inductive sensors detect all metals without contact.

Magnetic and cylinder sensors

Sensors using the magnetic principle detect the presence of a magnetic field; as such they are as robust as inductive proximity sensors, but can offer much greater ranges wherever the field of a static magnet extends. Pistons in pneumatic cylinders are commonly fitted with a magnet for just this purpose. The dedicated cylinder sensors are designed to fit to the cylinders, either directly or using adapters.

Encoders

In many manufacturing and production processes, in mobile machines and in the area of renewable energies encoders have become established as reliable instruments to ensure precise positioning. They convert rotary movement into digital signals. Encoders use the wearfree photoelectric or magnetic detection. A pulse disc firmly attached to the shaft or a movable magnet carrier ensures this detection. A distinction is made between incremental and absolute encoders. Incremental encoders generate a precisely defined number of pulses per revolution. They are a measure of the angular or linear distance moved. Absolute encoders provide an absolute numerical value for each angular position even over several revolutions.

Speed sensors

In many industrial applications drives need to be monitored for rotational speed or standstill. In the automotive, food, steel and mining industries, speed sensors are used to safely detect standstill, overspeed and underspeed of drives or belt break on conveyors. On mobile machines such as fork-lift trucks, speed sensors serve as speed pick-ups. Speed sensors integrate rotational speed detection and monitoring in one unit. The sensor head operates using inductive or magnetic sensing principles. The sensor detects metal actuating surfaces on a rotating machine part. The integrated evaluation converts this information into rotational speed.

Safety sensors and systems

The Machinery Directive stipulates machinery should not present a risk. Since there is no zero risk, the aim is to achieve an acceptable residual risk. If safety is dependent on control systems, these must be designed so as to minimise malfunction. Safety technology in automation minimises the risk of damage to persons or installations. The ifm product range comprises a multitude of safety products including electro-sensitive protective equipment (ESPE), door switches, actuators and control systems.

Pressure sensors

ifm offers a wide range of electronic pressure sensors to meet the requirements of various industrial applications. The ceramic-capacitive measuring cell, tried and tested millions of times, is complemented by a stainless steel measuring cell with thin-film or thick-film wire strain gauges and a piezoresistive measuring technique. All units have robust housings and do not require moving parts such as pistons or springs. The sensors are extremely shock and vibration resistant and operate without wear or maintenance. The ceramic-capacitive measuring cell is corrosion-resistant and long-term stable. The sensors are resistant to pressure peaks and guarantee overload resistance even during extreme pressure peaks. Units with wire strain gauge in thick-film technology on a stainless steel measuring cell are very compact and robust. They can be used in almost all industrial areas.

Level sensors

Electronic level sensors monitor filling levels of liquids or bulk materials in containers, tanks and silos. Even critical process conditions such as emptying a hydraulic tank or unintentional overspill of a tank are monitored using level sensors. The ifm product range includes units for continuous level measurement or point level detection. Depending on the application, different measuring principles such as capacitive, guided wave radar or hydrostatic level measurement are offered. For non-contact level detection, photoelectric distance sensors or 3D camera systems can be used. Build-up and wear often lead to failures, electronic ifm sensors can do without any mechanical parts or floats. This makes the sensors especially robust and reliable. Further advantages of electronic sensors are the local level indication and easy switch point setting via pushbuttons.

Industrial communication

Actuator-sensor interface (AS-i) is a manufacturer-independent standard for the connection of actuators and sensors of the first field level. AS-Interface has become established as an economic wiring system in industrial automation. A two-wire flat cable transmits data and energy. This considerably reduces wiring complexity since conventional parallel wiring of each sensor or actuator to the controller is no longer necessary. It also saves the user a great number of terminals, splitter boxes, input / output cards and cable lines. AS-i gateways with integrated PLC function control the data exchange to the sensor/actuator level and communicate rapidly with the superior control level. They can be used as independent, decentralised controllers or as gateways to all common fieldbus systems. The range includes interfaces with EtherNet/IP, Profibus, Profinet, EtherCAT or CANopen.

Identification systems

In production, intralogistics and conveying, automated identification based on 1D/2D codes or RFID labels has become a standard. Such automated identification systems enable the requirements-driven distribution of goods or assembly components as well as their traceability in real time. As a result, manufacturing and supply processes can be fully automatically controlled and seamlessly documented. In RF identification systems, workpiece or goods carriers are marked by RFID transponders, i.e. ID tags. Antennas enable noncontact reading from and / or writing to such ID tags. These data are immediately transferred to an RFID evaluation unit, where they are processed. The RFID evaluation unit transmits the data to the PLC via fieldbus interfaces such as PROFIBUS DP, PROFINET, Ethernet IP, Ethernet TCP/IP or EtherCAT. Applications are found in production lines, where the units are used for material flow control.

Light towers

Signal lamps are used for status indication or as warning devices everywhere in factories on machines, conveyors and installations. ifm’s innovative signal lamps offer several advantages over conventional signal lamps and are therefore suitable for demanding applications. In general signal lamps must be adapted to the application. Instead of spending time and effort on screwing modules of different colours together, the new LED RGB technology makes it possible to adjust the signal lamp as needed via IO-Link or setting button (e.g. permanently on, low flash rate, high flash rate, different colours, siren). This reduces type variety and stockkeeping. Neither water nor dust stick to the smooth surface of the lamp body. This prevents dirt from sticking, ensuring visibility of the signal lamp in the long run.

Power supplies and fuses

ifm power supplies for control cabinet installation provide power to the connected controllers, modules, sensors and actuators. They provide high noise immunity and sufficient power reserves to reliably handle short current spikes. The compact housing takes up very little space in the control cabinet. Thanks to their high degree of efficiency, the units save energy costs and reduce waste heat in the control cabinet. If the user wants to switch higher currents or even alternating currents, they must use a switching amplifier. For use in potentially explosive atmospheres, switching amplifiers for NAMUR sensors are offered.
