At this year’s Hotelympia exhibition, a new design award was introduced that recognises the best hotel suites. The winner, featured on page six, created what the designers from RPW Design call a “city apartment”, with stunning interiors and the latest technology. This reflects the trend of making luxury hotels look like a home from home, and this issue we look at some of the latest designs for hotels as part of a focus on hospitality interiors.

Technology is integrated into many of the latest high-spec home interiors, and this month we find out about how systems can seamlessly control everything from audio and TV equipment to lighting and temperature. it all helps to add an exciting high-tech element to cutting-edge concepts.

Also in this issue we look at the latest designs for stairs and balustrades, both for the home and commercial interiors, as well as ideas for tiling and surface design.

Home interiors will also be under the spotlight at this year’s grand Designs Live show at London exCel in May. in this issue, we look ahead to this event aimed at both professional designers and consumers, which provides ideas and innovations for every room of the home. go to page 49 to find out about a special offer for in.Design readers which means that you can claim up to two free tickets if you visit on a weekday.

In.Dustry Suite success in Hotelympia awards

L

eading interior design practice RPW Design has won the inaugural Hotelympia Design Award for its work on the Mandarin Oriental hotel in London.

it impressed judges with its designs for the refurbishment of the Royal suite, conceived as a city apartment mixing contemporary chic with Victorian heritage. The detailing in the suite reflects the quality of the Mandarin Oriental’s signature style, from the ornate Maya Romanoff wallpaper to the bespoke, double-tiered rock crystal chandelier in the dining room.

Hotelympia exhibition at London exCel by Jenny gibbs, founder and principal of KLC school of Design in London. it was one of several competitions and awards at Hotelympia, the trade show for the hospitality industry which took place last month. They also included the Hotelympia innovation Awards, rewarding new ideas being showcased at the exhibition. A self-stabilising table, stableTable, won the innovation award in the category of design.

stableTable Made in sweden, it is a unique patented table base that automatically adjusts to any uneven surface through a mechanical system inside a table’s central pillar. The judges include Michelin-starred chef Jason Atherton and Robbie Bargh, founder of hospitality design consultancy gorgeous group.

The apartment also features a sweeping balcony large enough for 40 guests and running the length of the suite, plus the latest Bang & Olufsen sound and visual systems. The award was introduced to reward the UK’s most luxurious and desirable hotel suite. The judging panel included Alex Polizzi of Channel 5’s Hotel inspector, her mother Olga Polizzi, who is director of design for the Rocco Forte Collection, Michael Attenborough, the head of design at Radisson edwardian Hotels, and Robert Cook, the chief executive of Malmaison and Hotel du Vin. The award was presented to RPW Design’s managing director Jan Wilson at the

Ambitious new plans for 100% Design

T

he new owners of the 100% Design show have revealed plans to reverse the event’s decline with new features to improve the visitor experience. The exhibition, which has been running for 15 years, has been acquired from Reed exhibitions by Media 10, which runs the ideal Home show, grand Designs Live and Clerkenwell Design Week. After 100% Design attracted more than 18,000 visitors to earls Court last year, Media 10’s design portfolio director Daren newton said they planned to more than double that figure to 40,000. The new-look event will be split into four areas under the 100% Design umbrella: 100% interiors, 100% Office, 100% Kitchens and Bathrooms and 100% eco Design and Build. each area will be marketed through its different channel, and Media 10’s new strategy will help it fulfil the aim of at least 10,000 visitors in each zone, which will be filled with large and small companies. All the zones will be entered by a “tunnel”, delivering the visitor to the heart of the four zones. “The demise of the show can be attributed to the fact that the right brands haven’t been there,” Daren said, speaking to in.Design’s sister magazine, stand Out. “We do need to bring the big and cool brands back.” He said many lapsed exhibitors were poised to sign up for the 2012 show which takes place at earls Court from september 19 to 22. “They are brands that once made the show what it was and, if you mix them with the smaller brands, then it completes the reason for someone to come.”

Forbo Flooring at last year’s 100% Design As well as a bar in the centre, Media 10 is introducing a restaurant with a Michelinstarred chef. “We want to make sure that the visitor experience is perfect and, to do that, we need to use what once was exhibitor space as feature space and networking areas,” Daren added. “The show needs glamour: we have a large production budget and the visitors we want to attract expect something extra.” He said they wanted 100% Design to be the “epicentre” of the London Design Festival which runs from september 15 to 23. The festival’s director, William Knight, has been

appointed as events director of 100% Design. Daren said: “100% Design needs to be brought back to its former glory, and he believes that 100% Design needs to work as the show where business is done.” Other improvements will include a 200-seater auditorium that will link via satellite the best speakers in the design industry. Daren said it would be a “global interactive conference”, with the audience having voting keypads and the latest technologies to join in on the debate via social networks. Mark Howorth moved to the UK from California in the early 1990s and, after a spell running a London art gallery, began his own interior design practice Callender Howorth. For more than 12 years, the practice has worked on a wide range of projects from country houses and London apartments to retail and office projects

A week in the life of… Mark Howorth

Monday Mondays usually kick off first with a team meeting in London. This week is a fun one, as a large ski chalet is due for completion in Villars, France. The project is a culmination of two years’ work. The chalet itself was designed by sir Richard Rogers and we have completed all of the interior design and styling. As i write, we have three enormous lorries clearing customs in switzerland, which we will meet at the chalet tonight. tuesday D Day at the chalet – it’s been interesting. The lorries actually could not get up the final narrow roads to the chalet, so we have had to rent three small vans with an army of helpers to offload, reload and get all of the goods to the chalet. This problem aside, there is still a real buzz in the air as all the new furniture and art arrives. The client is due in tomorrow so we have 24 hours to get everything installed and styled to perfection prior to their arrival, so lots to do! We also have an army of builders to supervise as they finish final joinery issues.

in.His LiFe : 11

Wednesday After an all-nighter and lots of coffee and swiss chocolate, we are finished 20 minutes before our client arrives. We have managed to get all the log fires burning, stunning flower displays everywhere and the champagne ready – it really is looking great. i am very pleased, relieved and exhausted. The chalet is at such a high altitude that the clouds have come in, and today they are actually resting beneath the chalet so there is a real sense of calm and serenity to the place. Clients arrived and were thrilled with how it all looks.

thursday Back in London, and an early meeting with a developer in Chelsea. We are working on a large project for them to design and build four houses and 12 apartments. A great meeting, and then we were treated to lunch by the client. Back to the studio to meet with the contractors who are building our new studio space. We have found a great loft space in the old Morelands gin factory in Clerkenwell. As we often entertain clients at the studio, we have designed a fantastic bar and dining area which we will put to good effect!

All pictures: chalet in Villars Friday Off to nice on the first flight out (ugh). Meeting a long-standing client who we are now designing a villa for, in the hills above nice. We do lots of projects in the south of France and, being a complete Francophile, i really love working there. The French have a great way of getting things done whilst having a great lunch! sadly i am not happy with the quality of the new build team and have had to really assert – in professional French – that the standards are just not t

s good enough. We managed to find an agreement, but will really need to watch the progress on site and the quality issues. staying down for the weekend at my 300-year-old apartment on the flower market in Vieux nice. i love the space as it is a rambling, fresco- and beam-filled grotto! There are views across the bay of nice and it feels a bit like you are on a plane coming to land at nice airport in the distance. eight people for dinner tonight so having to dash to the local market as i will be making tartiflette (a very rich, creamy, cheese potato dish). Yum. 7pm: first glass of sancerre. great week. t

s Saturday Lazy start. Meet some friends for coffee at my local café and discuss the upcoming election. The French love to debate, and it always makes me smile at how passionate they become with words and hand gestures! After coffee i am off sourcing and head to several of my favourite furniture places – always an adventure as one never knows

what one will find. There is an exceptional chandelier shop run by a Parisian called Bernard on a tiny back street in Antibes. He finds items from all over France and i am lucky to see and agree on this occasion on some amazing Baccarat chandeliers for a client in st Tropez. Sunday Midday flight back to London from nice –

always sad to leave. But i need to meet with my creative director to review a pitch for a large country house that we are presenting first thing Monday morning. Back to studio by 4pm and i’m greeted by the largest bouquet of flowers i have ever seen – a thank you from our client in Villars. i am really touched by this as they are clearly pleased with the final result and i realise that i truly do have a great job.

Sustainability ‘needs to be addressed’ in interiors

Donna Staples of interior designers and architects practice Pellings champions environmental issues in interior design

D

onna staples from the British institute of interior Design’s environment Committee helped to raise awareness of environmental issues in interior design through a talk delivered as part of the Designing green interiors event. Donna, who is associate at interior designers and architects practice Pellings, gave an insightful seminar to an audience of designers and materials developer delegates. she addressed the experiences and challenges of using and specifying sustainable materials for interior design projects. she also discussed the tools available to designers and looked in depth at the BRe green guide, an online tool used for checking the score of business elements and covers fabric elements, to floor finishes. The event was organised by the eRDFfunded inCrops enterprise Hub and held at the Building Research establishment (BRe) in

Watford. it was aimed at interior designers, architects, developers, building contractors and manufacturers of interior materials. “sustainability issues are increasingly at the forefront of the design process and need to be addressed on a whole project basis, from early design to detailed advice for building users,” Donna said. “sustainable development criteria are embedded in the planning process and our architects are able to advise closely and work with clients to ensure project proposals meet the requirements of the local authority. “it is important clients’ aims and objectives are understood and designers are aware of legislation and options. Products also require standardisation, and correct accreditation should be put onto their use within the market. There are many challenges facing sustainability in design. However, opportunities do exist and it is imperative that we raise awareness of these issues.” Based in norwich, inCrops enterprise Hub

Donna staples of Pellings is a body that aims to stimulate, through new business assistance and activity, the commercialisation of new bio-renewable and low-carbon products from alternative and non-food crop feedstock. Designing green interiors addressed the issue of how the interior design market addresses “green”’ issues. inCrops is planning to run a series of follow-on events on the use of bio-based materials and sustainable design in 2012 and 2013.

A

cross europe, the regeneration of buildings and cities for the 21st century has inspired architects and designers to honour the past while creating something for the future. They have been keen to integrate elements of a location’s industrial and cultural heritage into their projects – something that is illustrated by two newly completed hotels in two industrial centres at opposite ends of europe: Coventry in the UK and Zaporozhye in Ukraine.

Past masters

The designs of two new hotels at opposite ends of Europe demonstrate the combination of contemporary interiors with local heritage

Atrium at Premier inn, Coventry

Premier inn, Coventry Coventry has suffered over the past century from the decline of its key industries, from ribbon-making to car manufacturing, as well as the destruction of many of its historic buildings during World War Two. One that survived was Coventry City College, built in 1935 and a fine example of Art Deco architecture. its frontage was a homage to the Doric facades of classical greek architecture, complete with columns and portico, decorated with Art Deco mouldings depicting the technology of the 1930s. The college in earlsdon Park closed in 2008, but owner MCD Developments has preserved the two-storey building by converting it into a hotel, with future plans for an office complex. MCD brought in construction specialist Leadbitter group to carry out the £6million project which involved restoring many original features inside and out as well as creating a new third storey to accommodate 42 bedrooms for Whitbread’s Premier inn. About 300 original Crittall steel windows were restored along with some feature

The space studio which has worked on numerous hospitality projects from the eaton Hotel in edgbaston, West Midlands, to a fivestar resort on the Cape Verde islands. For

senior project manager Kevin O’Brien of Leadbitter group says this meant the top floor of the hotel could be completed relatively quickly. “Once the pods were delivered to site, we were able to install five or six a day,” he says. “When utilising this method of construction, it is vital that every detail is covered at the design stage, as there is absolutely no room for mistakes. On site, we installed a steel frame onto the existing roof, in order to spread the load of the bedroom pods. All we then needed to do at the third floor was to install the services once the bedrooms were in t

Other major features that Leadbitter brought back to their former glory include the central lightwell atrium, which was originally built as an open well, flanked by Art Deco columns rising to the full height of the building. Also restored were the two original terrazzo staircases sweeping down either side of the lightwell, complete with bronze handrails. The refurbished building is made up of a hotel reception, restaurant and kitchen on the ground floor, with space for offices on the first floor and part of the ground floor. On the second floor are 58 hotel rooms plus another 42 on the newly built third storey. The interiors were designed for Whitbread by architectural and interior design practice

Five Points by Sheraton nearly 2,000 miles east of Coventry, in the former soviet republic of Ukraine, is another industrial city, Zaporozhye – which is twinned with Coventry’s neighbouring Birmingham. This major city continues to be Ukraine’s centre for motor manufacturing, and the region’s heritage is reflected in a major new project on the banks of the Dnieper River: the first starwood hotel in Ukraine. The flagship new-build Five Points by sheraton hotel has 164 rooms and suites, with stylish interiors by JOi-Design. Corinna Kretschmar-Joehnk, co-managing director of JOi-Design, explains: “starwood’s debut into the Ukrainian marketplace is a significant milestone. it was especially important to us that our design would honour and interpret the region’s rich heritage through a fresh, contemporary lens fit for the booming economic and cultural growth of this important industrial centre and transportation hub. As a result, natural materials such as warm timber and locallysourced stone are prevalent, and we have implemented traditional patterns from a modern perspective.” On entering the elegant lobby, guests are greeted by the sunflower, a folklore symbol representing Ukraine’s fertile lands. Overhead, an abstraction of this motif shines

Bar at Five Points down in the form of a chandelier crafted from glass balls in both clear and gold, while the pattern of the cream marble floor is a magnified reflection of the flower’s petals. Following the lines of the lobby’s curved shell are two sweeping staircases with lit marble steps that cast an ethereal glow to create drama. Another design detail is inspired by the country’s heritage: the traditional Ukrainian colour pairing of blue and yellow. This is harmoniously translated into the design of a sleek reception desk, with backlit frosted panels and a gilded woven screen reminiscent of the compact florets within a large sunflower blossom. This colour duo also extends to the other public areas through accents such as the cushions on the plush tawny leather sofas

and lounge chairs in the library, wine bar and café. The Flavors restaurant has a natural feel, using contrasting tones of light and dark walnut timber to create a connection with Ukraine’s nickname as the “bread basket of europe”, coming from the region’s rich soils and abundant harvests. The sunflower shape appears again, at both the frosted glass entry door as well as in the marble inlay in the oak planks which elegantly wind through the restaurant to form the circulation areas. Fresh celadon green cushions, flaxen wallcovering and glowing pendant lights all help create a warm and relaxing dining atmosphere. Modern paintings illustrate figures from folklore, tying together the design’s overall concept and t

Perfect solution for a coastal environment

A

new development of unique duplex and triplex luxury apartments with seafront location, The View, split into four homes, is an ideal showcase for the quality of the Daikin Altherma air/water heat pump system. The outdoor units are encased in powder-coated galvanised steel, the heat-exchanger fins are pre-coated with a special anti-corrosion treatment providing five to six times more resistance against the

more corrosive, coastal environment and the provision of rust-proofed steel sheets on the underside of the units give additional protection. These features are standard across the Daikin range. Daikin Altherma was specified by the Bryant & Reina group as air/water heat pump systems are a perfect match for a mix of under-floor and radiator heating in new-build properties. The low-temperature Daikin Altherma integrated split heat pump and DHW cylinder was considered an ideal solution for this development. Having previous experience of the “complete” Daikin Altherma system on an earlier project, the client specified space Air to supply for The View development. Prefabricated ancillary piping kits only available from space Air simplify the installation and ensure that each system can be exactly replicated. Mark Houghton from space Air solutions said: “This project is an excellent example of where the build quality of Daikin equipment really counts, not just in terms of performance and reliability but also, with the outdoor units all pre-treated to resist corrosion from the coastal environment, longevity in relatively harsh conditions.”

Stairway to paradise Mark Ludmon looks at some of the creative ideas for staircases and balustrades

S

taircases are a functional necessity in every home but, according to bespoke stair and balustrade specialist Bisca, progress in design and use of materials means they can be attention-grabbing design statements in their own right. in a project in Hertfordshire, Bisca’s brief was to create an impressive focal point that would not only join the ground to the first and second floors but also harmonise with a large, striking glass atrium. Bisca’s team came up with an exciting, swirling sculptural design in which a continuous sequence of walnut treads and risers, supported by mild steel stringers, gracefully overhang at each side so that the treads appear almost to float. At the foot of the stairs, the hand-stitched leather handrails curve down to the floor on either side to form sweeping newels that are also leather clad.

Bisca staircase in Hertfordshire

Working within the constraints of an historic building need not be a problem for designers wanting to create contemporarylooking staircases. The refurbishment of the

Hi-MACs at newcastle University students Union 180-year-old listed students union building at newcastle University by FaulknerBrowns Architects included the main central staircase for the five-storey building. As the integral structure and fabric had to remain intact, cladding of the staircase was allowed only if it retained the original feature. The architects’ solution was to use natural stone acrylic Hi-MACs in nordic White. Hi-MACs, which was used throughout the building, was particularly useful for this project as the material will not be stained or damaged by student flyposting.

Beautifully designed balustrades with a stunning finish can dramatically enhance a space, says ian Page, general manager of Kee safety, a leading supplier of railing systems. “stainless steel, a favourite with many interior designers, provides a sleek and tidy solution that has maximum durability in comparison to many other materials,” he adds. some stainless-steel solutions require welding, cutting and special tools but the Kee stainless solution is a modular alternative that removes these needs. it allows for a quick and efficient

install, with little skill or labour required. “This method will also save on design and installation costs, without compromising on the quality and safety of the finished design,” ian adds. Key safety has expanded its stainlesssteel balustrade range, upgrading its high-specification Kee stainless tube and component system to offer new options for a broader range of interior and exterior applications. it features a greater range of handrail, base and infill options, including t

A new concept in glass balustrades has been launched by Zapp Balustrades. Designed for balconies and terraces of private apartments, houses, and hotels, the new Citila is an aluminium framed heightadjustable glass screen. it is finely counterbalanced which means they can be easily adjusted by hand to either the full height or any intermediate height. Available in four sizes and manufactured in sweden, the glass balustrade comprises an aluminium frame with laminated glass in the fixed and moving sections. The fixed section can be supplied with translucent glass or other materials. With a standard finish of satin anodised aluminium, other surface finishes can be specified such as powder

Ledpod from Klik systems coating or anodising in a range of colours. For installation, the glass screen system uses various stainless steel connectors and fasteners. Other options available are automatic locking, lock with key, overhead hanging fixed glass and electric operation.

From Australia comes a new concept for illuminating stairways and balustrades. Klik systems, a manufacturer of architectural fixtures and fittings, won the 2011 Australian Luminaire Design Award last year with its “snap in” LeD luminaire, the Ledpod. it is designed for handrails of any size and focuses light downwards on stairs and paths. A specially designed heat sink solved the problem of heat on the glass lens and handrail which does not exceed 35 degrees Centigrade. The Ledpod fits flush into a handrail, installed with a simple push and removed with a quarter turn. “it was important to me to have the luminaire located out of view under the handrail, effectively lighting the stairs or walkway with good vertical illumination while minimising glare,” says Klik systems design manager Paul Roos. “Ledpod is particularly useful where no overhead lighting is possible.” it adds to the options available for designers looking for practical solutions and creative ideas for staircases and balconies.

Intelligent design Mark Ludmon finds out how innovations in technology are offering designers new ideas for creating an “intelligent” home

A

t next month’s grand Designs Live show at London exCel, a new section has been created dedicated to the “automated home”. it will present new technology, from the ebode Lightspeaker, which combines low-consumption LeD lighting with wireless sound, to iQ glass, an eco-efficient heating system that

uses “intelligent” glass. This reflects a revolutionary move towards the “connected” home, says Will Brocklebank, director and head of technology at Face to Face Digital, which designs, installs and maintains total residential technology systems. “Our modern lives mean our homes multi-task as never before: a kitchen is simultaneously a place to feed the family, somewhere to relax

A Devon barn conversion with total control by Crestron and also a makeshift office to bash out an email while grabbing a coffee,” he explains. “The data that flows round the house, from our thermostats, washing machines, TVs, computers and door entry systems forms the heartbeat of our home.” For instance, Will says the new technology means you can equip a home with boiler

Caple Lift oven control that allows heat and hot water to be changed via a computer or smartphone anywhere in the world. He points out that studies by the Carbon Trust show that premises with “well-controlled systems” can save 15 to 30 per cent annually. Crestron, a leading manufacturer of advanced control and automation systems, offers integrated solutions to control audio, video, computer and environmental systems. its Total Home Technology solution allows blinds, lights, temperature or audio-visual equipment to be controlled from a touch panel, iPad, remote or customised keypad, such as wall-mounted touch screens. With the Crestron Mobile Pro app, they can even be controlled via a smartphone or tablet PC while away from the home. Crestron

products also help cut energy costs, using its green Light occupancy and photocell sensors that harness natural daylight to automatically dim lighting while maintaining a consistent light level. new products from Crestron include its wireless CLWi-DiMUeX lighting dimmers for integrated lighting control. it has also introduced the new compact 2.8-inch touch screen TPMC-3sMD which expands on its popular TPMC-4sM line by offering a discreet, stylish and affordable solution that is designed to fit into a single gang wall box. This sleekly designed device enables users the convenience of one-touch control for lights, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, all AV sources and security without obscuring a home’s décor.

innovations in designing automated homes are recognised each year by the Custom electronic Design and installation Association with its CeDiA Awards, with categories for integrated home projects of all sizes. Judging for the 2012 awards is under way in the run-up to April’s ceremony at Hampton Court Palace in surrey, but last year’s winners highlight what is now possible. sMC, a leading specialist in communication, entertainment, environmental control, lighting and security systems, won for a project for a home in Chelsea, London. it included a dedicated media room, with CAT5 cabling for HD and ethernet connectivity for the home entertainment system, plus further integration of lighting controls and the heating, ventilation and air conditioning. it had a strong emphasis on security, t

The kitchen is becoming the hub of many homes – creating the term “social living kitchen” – and new products reflect this trend. At last month’s KBB Birmingham show, sensio Lighting launched the sensio Koch range which includes smart Kitchen that allows people to control everything within the room through a smartphone or tablet PC. sensio Koch’s smart Drive provides multimedia control throughout the home, enabling people to switch lighting on and off as well dimming and brightening for the perfect lighting combination. it can also link into video cameras, allowing outdoor living areas to be monitored through live streams on a smartphone.

Lighting control by sensio Lighting Also for the kitchen, appliance specialist Caple has introduced the new sense oven, C5100 Lift, which rises smoothly from a flush position on the worktop at the press of a button. it can be lowered into the work surface while continuing to cook food – with crush-prevention sensors to ensure fingers are not caught. The oven, which has a stainless-steel interior and three telescopic glass shelves, features 13 touch-control functions including pizza and bread-making programmes. Appliances like this enable designers to integrate technology into a project seamlessly and smartly. “There is also a significant design impetus behind the increasing intelligence and inter-operability of systems,” says Will at Face to Face Digital. “How often has one seen a beautiful interior blighted by a hospital beige air conditioning

Cronus entry system contoller or thermostat box? integrated systems can remove the complexity and ugliness of these many differing controls and present the modern home-owner with a simple, clear control screen that incorporates all these tasks and more.” They are no longer a luxury for the “flashiest” homes but represent good commercial sense, he adds. “The ‘connected home’ promotes efficiency and productivity in our multi-faceted, fastpaced lives.”

italian tile brand Refin launched the Cromie collection at the surface Design show – the first time a tile company has developed 30 new colours. Offering this kind of colour range allows architects, interiors designers and specifiers many more opportunities to seamlessly create more accurate and subtle finishes for projects. Using the nCs-natural Colour system inspired by Leonardo da Vinci, Refin can offer a new chromatic palette with scientific criteria for brightness, saturation and shade for the first time. it is made up of

Liberty Purple from Trend four groups or “families”, each made up of nine chromatic shades, such as the neutral grey shades of the Polvere family and the yellow and red hues of the Fango and Terra families. Also new from Refin at the surface Design show was a range of metallic ceramic tiles called Metal. Measuring 30cm by 30cm, they are made up of a mosaic of shapes with a combination of matt and gloss metal coloured finishes. Metal plays with geometry to mix squares and rectangles randomly, using platinum, gold and copper finishes. Refin also uses a metallic finish in another new collection, Beside – a reverse mosaic in dark pewter. Metal’s designer, Massimiliano Adriano, comments: “inspiration usually comes from the material. i like challenging materials and trying to tap into what emerges from them to fine-tune new projects.”

The talk took place at the nLA – London’s Centre for the Built environment – in central London at a one-day event during the exhibition, which ran in February and March and was organised by the nLA and supported by the BiiD. Dan presented his experience of designing home extensions in the capital, entertaining his audience with a talk that gave useful advice on renovation issues from an interior design perspective. He later joined a panel including Mary Duggan, director of Duggan Morris, and Alan Higgs, director of Alan Higgs Architects, for a question-and-answer session. The Don’t Move, improve! exhibition featured 72 shortlisted schemes from this year’s Don’t Move, improve! competition which invited architects, homeowners and interior designers across London to

The multimillion-pound redevelopment of a landmark London building offered Hunter Douglas the opportunity to create an innovative solution never seen before in europe. At the Rolls and Arnold Houses in Chancery Lane, Hunter Douglas created a solution that provides optimum shade and privacy whilst also meeting strict sustainability requirements to ensure an excellent BReeAM rating. Hunter Douglas provided an eOs Type 5-70 system, using the new eOs 500 Roller system for the first time in europe with a mix of 105 motorised and 560 manually operated blinds. The choice of fabric was the recyclable greenscreen eCO with three per cent openness. Visit www.hunterdouglas.co.uk.

über furniture’s new Babington kitchen not only comes in a choice of colours, but you can also choose from a number of handles. To inject eastern style, this striking new handle design, pictured, is inspired by a Japanese samurai sword. The Babington collection can embrace contemporary eastern influences with the addition of the slick, barely-there Katana handle available as just one option in the company’s impressive handle collection. This handle is slender and designed to provide a solid grip – especially practical for accessing wide pan drawers and integrated appliances – without destroying the clean lines of Babington’s high-gloss slab doors.
