Classic With A Twist Think opulent interiors and a garden perfect for enjoying an alfresco dining experience; the ideal meeting place for friends and an equally decadent venue for a special occasion. The Stanneylands Hotel in Wilmslow underwent a total renovation earlier in 2017, with DV8 Designs putting the Cheshire venue firmly back on the map.

M

anaging Director of DV8 Designs Lee Birchall and his team were enlisted to restore this forgotten gem to its former glory, taking on the task of transforming and renovating the high profile, three story hotel. Having previously been in receivership and in a somewhat uncared-for state for many years, The Stanneylands’ new owners envisioned a major repositioning project to reestablish this former Cheshire institution and reopen as a contemporary yet classic British drinking and dining destination with an exceptional events space and 52 restyled guest rooms, encompassing country house and city chic in a marriage of old and new.

with its past whilst ensuring that it was relevant to today’s market with the use of timeless yet modern designs, which were apparent throughout the brief. The unique history of the venue would be captured with an earthy colour scheme incorporating splashes of mauve, purple and greens, chosen to protect the legacy. To accentuate the ratio between antique and modern-day décor, design features include vintage bric-a-brac, exposed brick walls, timber, flooring and feature tiles together with a series of chequered, floral and multi-textured wallpapers throughout.

Sheet: 5 - File: body.pdf

Established in 2006, Warrington-based DV8 Designs is an architecture and interior design practice that prides itself on its thorough approach, innovative ideas and portfolio that comprises several impressive projects with clients in hospitality, commercial, property and residential sectors. The concept to transform The Stanneylands was inspired by the venue’s brand values, which embrace a ‘Best of British’ ideal, and from this evolved a vision to create a Cheshire classic with a modern twist. It was essential that the venue was sympathetically restored in keeping

To ensure that the major ‘wow factor’ was apparent from the offset, the design had to play on the complete customer journey which included everything from the entrance, reception, bar, lounge, two new dining venues and an events suite to accommodate both social and corporate occasions. The design was implemented with a fluid and intuitively guided customer experience in mind, with all the lines of sight naturally guiding guests to the key focal points. Once the layout and journey had been determined, it came to matching design with practicality, with the functionality of each space thoroughly thought

out to achieve maximum potential. Integral to the operational efficiency was the need to delight guests with an abundance of country house touches whilst also affording guests magnificent views of the newly landscaped garden, complemented by the addition of three new terraces perfect for alfresco dining and drinking overlooking the woodland and lake. Back inside the historic build, the reception was designed with a more intimate feel when compared to the rolling landscape outside. It was essential to capture a welcoming feeling, greeting guests with features such as a traditionally detailed old writer’s desk with a stand-out key and clock display to serve as a nod to the property’s wealthy history. The complementary herringbone flooring leads guests through to the lounge area where a log fire is an open invitation to treat the space as a home away from home, while a timber panelled bar pays homage to the original panelling throughout the building. Further round, the space opens up into the newly established Tap & Pantry, a casual dining and drinking venue which is both rustic and fantastically British in terms of its feel. This space speaks for itself, with more natural finishes,

areas of tiled flooring to suit the branding and complementary accessories to lend the space to the picturesque views which are visible through the large windows. However, it maintains a sense of sophistication with the chic window displays and modern-day light fittings, which allow for an intimate dining experience.

The hotel’s main dining outlet, The Grill Room, was restored and reimagined as an elegant and sophisticated area with a sense of comfort captured by a traditional teal and yellow colour scheme running through the room. The original timber panelling adds a cosy feel, but with a new set of double doors

opening onto the regenerated space, the eatery sets for a bright inside area. Following a four-month closure, the creative overhaul included a complete reconfiguration of the venue which included every customer touchpoint from the moment of arrival right through to departure including the entrance lobby and reception area, 52 bedrooms including three bridal suites and six boutique rooms, two dining and drinking outlets, two events suites and a private meeting and dining room and external grounds. The first floor houses a large events suite, which holds up to 140 people, as well as the newly created meeting and dining private events suite and just some of the refurbished bedrooms. The largest suite, The State Room, affords the venue to host large scale events, catering for the likes of weddings and corporate occasions. It was essential to create a space with a grand stature, ensuring that the suite holds up its fitting name, with elegance and timelessness as well as a

The carpets and light fittings within these spaces were carefully thought about to ensure both practicality in terms of event management and maintenance as well as providing an atmosphere that was suitable for every event. Throughout the design, the finishes and fittings all pay homage to each other and form a neutral but impactful scheme. The addition of an external terrace also created an additional flood of light into the suite casting an ethereal glow, creating the perfect setting for a special occasion.

The refurbished bedrooms included three bridal suites and six boutique rooms as well as standard rooms. The brief entailed three different budget schemes, all of which were designed not only to create that sense of ‘home from home’, but to ensure that guests can enjoy the complete boutique hotel experience. The use of bespoke wallpapers and differing colour schemes were utilised to provide a unique and individualised service. As well as the reconfiguration of the internal works and the grounds, the property’s exterior was an extensive part of the overall project, with a complete refresh of the front and side facing elevations of the building. This included the introduction of new brushed stainless steel and glazed panel balcony and front face rendering which was painted to form a more grand and obvious access

point for guests. To truly complete the look at The Stanneylands, the redevelopment saw the creation of new split-level patios with a pathway leading between. These works improved the overall appearance of the external face of the house and offer an impressive and grand entrance leading up the driveway. Now, when one arrives at The Stanneylands, immediately there is a sense of country house charm and grandeur… a true Cheshire house classic with a twist. Since reopening to the public in April 2017, the transformed hotel has proven a roaring success, transporting the venue back to its glory days. This cherished Cheshire charm is now a firm favourite for weddings and corporate events to name just a few, with the eateries going down a treat with both residents and non-residents alike. The large-scale project also saw the creation of a new, smaller private meeting and events spaces with breakout refreshment areas that boast unbeatable views over the woodlands. Aptly named The Attic, this space has been gloriously designed in keeping with its name, furnished with bespoke timber cabinet fittings handcrafted to have the ‘wow’ factor but also to enable

efficiencies for storage and housing of the technical kit. This smaller and more intimate space has the added bonus of relaxation rooms with a small kitchen kit allowing for refreshments to be served.

Purely Bespoke

Veedon Fleece, now in its third decade, was formed to produce the best hand made carpets and rugs in the then Kingdom of Nepal, without the use of child labour and regardless of cost.

A

t Veedon Fleece, we are proud of our founder, Adam Gilchrist’s trail blazing stance within the carpet industry over 24 years ago.

When commissioning a Veedon Fleece carpet, there are a few basic points, which generally help produce the perfect end product and as the manufacturers we take these carefully into consideration before we start work.

Sheet: 8 - File: body.pdf

it is crucial to make people aware of the fact that as a custom weaving

house the particular carpet or rug that is being commissioned is a bespoke item designed and produced individually for them, it will not be something that could be selected from a pile of stock items. Because of this we are extremely careful to discuss any point regarding the commission and the many different qualities available ranging from pashmina, silk, veedon and best tibetan wool. We find it is important to show quality samples in the actual room where the carpet will eventually be situated - and have been known to fly around the world for our clients! the weavers themselves are crucial, and can sometimes form a dedicated team of up to 20 people, each with their own skills to complete one design. Presented with a design or asked to create a design for a home or a

commercial setting, firstly colours are agreed - generally after a site visit to see just how the light and space will work with the design. importantly, at this stage, measurements can be checked to make sure that the very best is being made of the room. once the size, design, and colours have been chosen and budget agreed, Veedon Fleece make samples for the client’s approval. the point paper is then drawn up; a 1:1 cartoon/graph paper and it is this which the weavers will follow to tie the many thousands of knots to complete the commission. Whilst the point paper is being drawn, the yarns, be they best tibetan wool, Veedon, silk, or pashmina, are selected from Veedon Fleece’s stocks, weighed and sent to the dye works for colour matching to the final approved sample. the warp threads are carefully stretched onto the empty steel loom frame and an

air of both excitement and anticipation overcomes the chosen weavers. As each commission is a totally bespoke order, everything in the process of creation is undergone with great attention to detail. the weavers, who could spend anything up to a year weaving one carpet, are chosen and put together in a team. of course, these weavers will be friends, having worked together for some time, and their individual skills, likes and dislikes when it comes to weaving certain designs are taken into account. Veedon Fleece’s experienced weavers face a different challenge each time they start a new carpet. Having complete control and responsibility for the creative

process, this could be two people working together on a small rug for six to eight weeks or as many as twelve people working on a large palatial silk carpet for anything up to a year. the responsibility is great, especially for large carpets; a momentous undertaking.

designs, each unique and created for the well advised client by their interior design professional, Veedon Fleece can be justly proud that their rugs and carpets sit quietly in some of the most beautiful and inspirational homes worldwide.

these are some of the differences that a bespoke custom weaving house brings; perhaps that’s why Veedon Fleece is the only company supplying purely bespoke hand knotted commissions today.

A Week In The Life Of Joanna Hauptman Hyde House is a British bespoke furniture manufacturer – custom making upholstery, case goods and joinery specifically to clients’ design and requirement in their workshop in Hertfordshire. With a background in fashion magazine publishing, Joanna Hauptman set up Hyde House with Richard Searle, a renowned furniture expert, when they noticed a gap in the market for affordable but sophisticated bespoke furniture. Hyde House celebrates its 10th Anniversary this year. Monday I start every Monday morning with the same routine; a production meeting, bringing together our administrative dept, Head of Production, and the Sales Team to run through all the current orders, checking progress on samples, drawings and final production schedules.

Sheet: 10 - File: body.pdf

Being a manufacturer of bespoke furniture, ours is a technical business, requiring high levels of attention to detail and very demanding levels of client service. Our team are very dedicated and passionate and Richard Searle, my partner, is a third generation furniture craftsman himself.

Richard will brief the team, and troubleshoot any production issues, because custom making upholstery and joinery can throw forward many unexpected technical issues that cannot always been foreseen, and our Monday morning meeting is a great way to focus the team for the week ahead. I will also regularly meet with the fabric and wallpaper reps, and today have the pleasure of Michelle from Altfield’s visit to our office. She will advise on the new

collections and we will order books to make sure our library is extensive and up to date. We are more interested in wallpapers than ever before since the launch of RESINATE™. This is our patented and trademarked furniture finishing system that utilises wallpaper as a viable and robust furniture finish for all free-standing furniture, case goods, and joinery. As a result, I am mindful to keep an ever-present eye out for interesting

wallpaper options to make up as samples for presentations to clients. Altfield always have beautiful options and today I select several Maya Romanoff options to showcase. Tuesday I make my way to Notting Hill to visit a long-standing client, Studio Vero, whose design studio is a hub of exciting creativity and buzz. The inimitable and highly charismatic Romanos Brihi talks me through a number of very exciting high end residential projects his design team are working on. We have supplied Studio Vero for many years and it is always interesting to be briefed on the new upcoming projects we will

be supplying. The designs are always innovative and distinctive and these pieces are no different. I present a number of veneer, metal and stone samples for client selection and we discuss the specification in further detail. Since we are an unusual supplier, being able to manufacture both upholstery and case goods, we have very much become a one stop shop for all our clients, making the designer’s life easier by being able to specify their projects with one supplier, making management easier and being far more economical. This afternoon I visit our stone supplier

to select the perfect slab of Onyx for a very exclusive coffee table that is in current production – after perusing many different options, I settle on one slab that has the most arresting hues and after a little haggling, we agree a price! Wednesday Today’s priority is work on the brand new HH collection of bespoke furniture to launch later this year. This past year we celebrated our 10th anniversary and in so doing, invited three leading UK designers to design a celebratory free-standing piece of furniture using our patented and trade-marked furniture finishing system RESINATE™. It was incredibly exciting for me personally

to see how each designer interpreted the brief differently and seeing the final pieces was very fulfilling. We work very hard each year to showcase an exciting and innovative collection; our aim is to represent our extraordinary craftsmanship and to exhibit how RESINATE™ can be used in a host of ways…

Sheet: 12 - File: body.pdf

In the afternoon I visit the V&A, perusing Plywood – Material of the Modern World exhibition, the Balenciaga, and the Lustrous exhibition, looking for inspiration for the 2018 collection I am yet to design. I find I am often influenced by fashion, having worked for Harper’s Bazaar for over 10 years, and after taking in the extraordinary talents of Balenciaga - I find myself being inspired by the timeless style, architectural influence and couture quality this designer came to be synonymous with. Thursday I grab a quick breakfast at Chelsea

Harbour Design Centre with Laura Hammett to discuss a bespoke rug that we are manufacturing for her, and after discussing the rug colour poms and technical design, we have a good old industry gossip and catch-up. Laura has developed a very influential platform on social media and she spends some time explaining the finer points in social media development to me. I then grab a taxi over to the City, to meet with the buying team at Luxdeco. This incredible portal for all things luxury in the world of interiors has been a very successful retail partner to Hyde House and I discuss with the buying team a brand new collaborative collection of furniture we aim to launch in 2018. Friday I have a meeting with Heathfield Lighting, Quintessa Art and Luxury Living to discuss a ‘cross pollination’ marketing initiative. As British luxury interior brands supplying the trade market, we share many common qualities, and we get together to brain-storm opportunities to develop a targeted and special VIP event

for our customer base. It is something I feel passionate about and I believe it is always constructive to be open to partnering with and collaborating with like-minded luxury brands. On this occasion, we agree that the event should take place in the spring and we agree to use the beautiful premises of Taylor Howes. This is a design practise that we work closely with, supplying bespoke furniture for their high end residential projects. Their newly launched Atelier 49 space will lend itself perfectly to such an event and is conveniently located in Knightsbridge. Saturday Weekends are all about family for me, particularly since I have two young daughters, and this Saturday is no different. We start the day by grabbing breakfast at 202 in Notting Hill, a firm favourite with the kids, and then we spend several hours perusing Notting Hill market. My girls have a fascination with antiques, and frankly I enjoy nothing better than rifling through antique Wedgewood china, art deco

No visit to Notting Hill is complete without a visit to Chloe Alberry and I select some handmade horn handles for a cocktail cabinet that is near to completion in our workshop whilst I am there. There is something very beautiful about the Heath – a verdant and wild spot in the middle of a polluted city, the girls race ahead to the top of the hill where the finest vista of London’s skyline spreads before you. It is an ever changing cityscape and the horizon looks more unfamiliar to me than ever before, despite being a Londoner, born and breed! Kenwood House itself is an incredible example of fine Georgian architecture – its elegance, simplicity and symmetry never ceases to impress me despite visiting this spot regularly since a child myself. Effortless Ergonomics When fitting-out workspaces, the office chair is an often overlooked investment!

W

ith the average office worker spending the equivalent of five years sat at their desk, it’s no surprise that poor furniture choices contribute to absenteeism and reduced productivity.

Sheet: 16 - File: body.pdf

According to the office for national Statistics, back and neck problems were the most common cause of office absenteeism in the UK in 2013, with 131 million days being lost as a result. it’s clearly in the best interests of everyone concerned that these work-related conditions are avoided. one solution is to ensure that office workers have a task chair that can be tailored to their proportions, and that they’re trained to sit correctly - minimising potential musculoskeletal problems. that some companies would scrimp on chairs without considering the positive benefits of well-being at work seems short-sighted and, in the longer term, a costly mistake. Comfort’s innovative range of

ergonomic task chairs are designed to be compatible with individuals’ needs through smart design, engineering, and advanced technology such as their patented single lever mechanism. the revolutionary lever provides intuitive simple adjustments from one location, making it invaluable in today’s agile work environments. traditionally, adjusting a task chair required working several levers for limited adjustments. if a workspace’s function is to accommodate single or multi-users in working environments like call centres or co-working spaces, it is important to have an ergonomic chair that is adjustable and simple to control. Comfort’s intuitive single lever is designed to make it simple to control the chair’s adjustments from your fingertips. their patented single lever operates the three most frequently used chair functions from a single point of contact (seat height, seat depth, and back tilt), and a separate tension control can be set to personalised tilt resistance in dynamic mode.

For multi-user environments, Comfort’s Project chairs make fast set-up even easier by automatically adjusting to the user’s weight when they sit on the chair by calculating the ideal tilt tension from the user’s weight - constantly supporting changes in weight distribution and movement. this makes the Project Enjoy and mirus chairs the perfect task seating solution for multi-user environments requiring speedy staff changeover without each new user throughout the working day having to fiddle with tension controls. Visit www.comfort.global for more information on their ergonomic range of office seating.

patterned wall tile,” Darren added. “Similarly, designers can stick to a subtle palette throughout, injecting personality through bold texture and shape.” David Bigland, managing director of Moduleo UK and Eire (moduleo.co.uk), told us that as modern interior design has the ability to change the mood and overall feel of a venue, impact customer experience, and affect staff morale, it’s an important consideration, particularly within hospitality settings, where operators are keen to keep punters in their establishment as long as possible. “When specifying flooring in settings such as pubs and restaurants, designers are increasingly seeing the benefits of luxury vinyl flooring to create the desired finish,” David said. “With authentic patterns and endless colours, the products offer a value alternative to natural products that are harder, and more expensive, to maintain.

in.VOGUE : 21 “Zoning and statement floors are key trends we’ve seen a great appetite for in the world of leisure and hospitality this year and is something we expect to continue throughout 2018.” The art of ‘zoning’ allows venues to create completely different looks in one room or space. “Various areas or ‘zones’ can be fashioned by dividing the floor with texture or colour for a decorative finish,” David added. “For example, bar and dining areas can be separated by various patterns which differentiate the spaces while maintaining flow, thanks to the same material. “Geometric and monochrome patterns have been popular, as have lighter shades which can complement rather than detract away from the interior. This works especially well for those trying to achieve the Hygge look.

Sheet: 19 - File: body.pdf

“We predict that statement floors will be big in 2018, and aim to meet demand for this with our latest designs from the

Impress range, particularly the ‘Express’ products, which offer linear and abstract patterns to encourage the production of bespoke floors.” Hakwood (hakwood.com) considers that the trend towards customised products is very much alive. “We receive requests for bespoke colours, dimensions, patterns, and special cuts on a regular basis,” Holly Hak, Marketing Manager for Hakwood, told us. “Our designer clientele wants to make their project exclusive so it fits the specific needs of their customer. It is our passion to collaborate and contribute to the realisation of this design dream.” The trend towards statement flooring patterns has been growing steadily for the past few years. “We observe this option being specified in varying styles of contemporary and eclectic interiors, not only in traditional designs,” said Holly. “The flooring in the Devonshire Club, London is a prime example of how a vibrant mix

of different patterns can be used to produce a sophisticated overall picture. A combination of Hakwood plank, herringbone, chevron and brick pattern flooring can be found throughout this private London club, designed by March & White. “The use of our flooring for walls, ceilings, cabinets, bars, stairs and so on is a sustained trend we see evolving over the years. We notice more daring, bold designs that really make a statement in the project.” The image on p00 shows the bar of the Hyatt Regency Amsterdam hotel, where Hakwood herringbone flooring was specified for both floor and ceiling to create a very playful and stylish effect. Current trends in flooring for hotels and restaurants see a mix of colours, textures, and patterns used throughout for increased variation and interest. Emma Franks, Head of Interior Design at ISA (isarchitects.co.uk), has specified materials from Domus (domusgroup. com) for Apex Hotels and restaurants.

Moduleo’s Castle Oak “The general concept for the Apex Hotel designs is to take guests on a journey through the linked spaces, which are always contemporary, dynamic and stylish,” she explained. “This journey is evident through the use of colour, textures and patterns. When embarking on the new hotel designs for both Bath and the City of London, we were looking for both tiled and wood flooring and surfaces with texture and depth.”

Sheet: 20 - File: body.pdf

Emma was able to specify a number of materials from Domus to fit the Apex design aesthetic. “The wood flooring specified for Apex Bath was heavily grained in a velvety black colour, offering a richness and depth which suits Apex Hotels,” she described. “We were also looking for tiling that had variation and interest once laid, which is why we opted for

the Jumble tile on the floor. In addition, the choice of the U-Color tiling to joinery gave us incredibly beautiful vibrant tiles to choose from, allowing us to fully realise our concept for these pieces.” At Apex City of London, ISA were looking for shape to accentuate the pattern and texture of the finishes. “For the terrace floor we opted for Rewind in a soft grey colour which gave us our hexagonal tiling, matched with Tex rhombus shaped tiles on the bar front which has a lovely subtle texture both on the tile surface and the pattern it creates,” Emma said. When it comes to flooring in hotels and bars, grey and monotone concrete shades have firmly been in the limelight for the past 2-3 years.

“In 2018 we will see a resurgence in popularity for a warmer palette of shades from rusty beiges to sandy yellows with natural limestone and sandstone effect porcelain being of particular interest,” forecasted Paul Shepherd of Solus Ceramics (solusceramics.com). “Large flecked terrazzo style porcelain is becoming increasingly popular, and manufacturers are experimenting with more unusual blends of neutral bases with vibrantly hued chips.” Old-school Hollywood glamour is a key trend, with designers choosing dark evocative black and brown marble effects, paired with lavish gold and brass décor tiles. “Texture is an increasingly desirable feature for designers, with requests for textured floor tiles that mimic the

Solus Ceramics at the Tamburlaine Hotel, Cambridge qualities of natural materials such as leather and fabric becoming more frequent as we head toward the New Year,” added Paul. “Finally, in terms of colour, keep an eye out for a host of retro infused shades such as peacock purple, light violet, spicy mustard, warm peach and palm green.”

Emma Cassidy, Head of Design EMEA, Brintons Carpets (brintons.co.uk), is currently seeing a new direction in the way designers are selecting colours and patterns for commercial flooring. “Clients are embracing change and breaking the rules of carpet design,” she said. “We are seeing less of small pattern repeats, with an increasing popularity of the large-scale designs and surface patterns with no repeats. The designs featured in the carpets are becoming works of art, and are very much part of the storytelling and conceptual development of an overall scheme.” Instead of chasing interior trends, clients and designers are connecting the exterior surroundings with the heritage

Enstone Chalk Hill from Johnson Tiles of buildings and using this to inspire the pattern and colour palettes. “The London Marriott Hotel County Hall is a beautiful example of this,” Emma added. “The carpet features a muted contemporary palette that echoes the subtle hues of the historic stone, soft metals, and watery grey shades have been taken from the colour combinations

of the Thames. The unusual geometry of the Grade II listed building and the decorative Art Deco architectural components provided inspiration for the contemporary designs, which is reflected in the bespoke-made carpets.” So if your next brief is to absolutely floor the clients’ customers, you know to start from the bottom up!

azaar Velvet’s London showroom is an ever evolving showcase of the best in cutting edge rug design. it overflows with spectacular one-off pieces from around the world as well as their own unique contemporary collections. Both large and small pieces are available from stock, covering countless styles to complement stunning interiors.

Sheet: 22 - File: body.pdf

in addition to their impressive selection of stock pieces, Bazaar Velvet offer an expert bespoke design service. their talented team can handle all manner of requests, from simple recolouring of existing designs, to creating complex new designs from scratch. Drawing on their unique understanding of the product, they are dedicated to working successfully alongside the client to build a common design vision that will achieve both aesthetic and practical needs. the process is simpler than many think, with the use of a specialist rug design programme to create realistic computer visuals, as well as physical samples of colour, material, and quality. With this, all parties can obtain a deep understanding of how the rug will look before it is made. Bazaar Velvet are committed to the traditional methods of creating a hand knotted rug. this process has remained virtually unchanged for hundreds of years, each rug the product of several months of work by dozens of skilled artisans. Every stage is completed by hand, and each brings an extra layer of character to the rug. it also builds a level of robustness unseen in any other rug-making method. the Bazaar Velvet workshop is situated in the valleys of nepal, where there is not only a rich history of carpet making,

but access to Himalayan Wool - the finest quality wool in the world. this material is rich in natural oils, giving the rugs a luxurious softness and a natural resistance to stains. in many designs this is combined with highlights of fine Chinese silk. the wool is spun and carded by hand, and dyed in huge vats over primitive fires. this gives the yarn a beautiful irregularity, which when knotted will bring a fascinating texture. Up to four people hand knot each rug on a traditional loom. once it is cut down, washed, and stretched, the pile is trimmed and carved by hand, often creating intricate raised textures. the creation of these rugs is indeed a labour of love. the Bazaar Velvet team are passionate

about hand knotted rugs, and are dedicated to providing their clients with the very highest level of quality and service. they set themselves apart with their commitment to all; from individual homeowners to some the most prestigious interior design companies in the world. their highly-personalised approach is commendable, often offering home consultations to those within reach, and making special arrangements for unusual projects or clients based further afield. their ultimate aim is to unite each client with their perfect rug – a rug of the highest quality that can be enjoyed for many years to come. When Tech Meets Tufts… danfloor have had a busy 2017, with investments in production machinery, expanding collections, and launching a company first! in.Design magazine talks to Catherine Helliker, danfloor’s Marketing Manager, to find out more. Tell us first about this brand new machine and what it does? the textile industry is constantly changing, so for danfloor to maintain its market position it was important for us to invest in a machine which would open up a world of possibilities. We looked to Card monroe Corp.(CmC), world leaders in tufting technology, to provide us with the ColorPoint machine. the machine incorporates breakthrough technology, patented by CmC, making it the only tufting machine of its kind to utilise CmC’s award-winning infinity pattern attachment and providing endless design opportunities for us. I understand you have launched your first ever patterned collection? there has always been a subtle pattern to some of our collections, however, with the arrival of the new machine we have been able to launch Evolution, a stunning new collection of patterned carpets. Evolution comprises six ranges; Scape, Geo Form, origin, Glaze, manhattan, and Forest, and offers a variety of designs from subtle to bold statement pieces.

Sheet: 24 - File: body.pdf

in fact we are the first manufacturers in Europe using such tufting technology to bring to market our patterned range. How are these created? We worked very closely with our parent company Ulster Carpets and one of their designers Calvin Pope to bring our visions to life. We carried out a number of tufting trials, and after consultation with some key interior designers we brought to market the six ranges which all utilise the available colour bank to enhance their design. What market is this aimed at? the Evolution Collection is built to be

durable and possesses some outstanding performance features, including an impervious membrane, which makes it suitable for a number of market sectors from healthcare to hospitality. How is Evolution made? manufactured using new innovative tufting technology and incorporating Aquafil’s Econyl® regenerated nylon yarn, the Evolution Collection has a strong environmental focus. manufactured from pre- and postconsumer waste, including items like abandoned fishing net, makes the Collection 100% regenerated and infinitely regenerable. Evolution is being used in combination

with our more tonal products to produce co-ordinating design schemes. And the Equinox Collection has expanded too? Yes, the first range to be produced on the new machine was Evolve, which has joined the award winning Equinox Collection. Equinox Evolve offers an alternative subtle, yet elegant design, which complements the overall Collection. these stunning new Collections provide a beautiful foundation for your interior design scheme, and a range of sample material is now available. SYLKA Rivals Pure Silk With SYLKA’s meteoric rise to fame since its launch five years ago, we thought it would be good to explore how this award-winning luxury carpet producer has managed to gain such a grip on the flooring market with its founder and CEO, Steve Farrell.

Sheet: 26 - File: body.pdf

Tell us about SYLKA… SYLKA has been providing carpets and rugs to some of the world’s leading interior designers, developers, and super-yacht builders since our launch in 2012. SYLKA is unique in that it offers the same luxurious lustrous look and feel as traditional silk carpets, but with the hardwearing characteristics of regular carpets. this is only possible thanks to our specially developed nuSilk fibre system, which ensures our carpets are easy to clean, resilient to fading, and hardwearing. What is your role within the company? i am the founder and CEo of SYLKA. my career in the world of carpets began at the tender age of 13 when i went to work at a carpet fitting company. i was, and still am – after 49 years – extremely enthusiastic, and i have spent many years perfecting my skills. i went on to establish a successful carpet planning and fitting company (Borderline Carpet Planning Services Ltd). Approximately seven years ago i realised that there was a huge gap in the luxury market for a product that was not only luxurious, but also durable enough to meet the rigours of everyday life while maintaining the luxury feel and quality of other luxury carpets. With this in mind, i spent the next two years in research and development creating our first two ranges. We launched these ranges in 2012, which has led to the development of our thirteen unique ranges of fauxsilk carpets that we are now famous for today. What sort of projects is SYLKA suitable for? it would probably be easier to ask what sort of projects SYLKA is not suited to. SYLKA has been used in a number of

different applications from luxury superyachts to high-traffic areas, such as corporate venues and luxury retail stores, including Harrods, Gucci, ted Baker, ralph & russo, and Alexander mcQueen. Also, we launched our Sylka marine division in 2016, which has been well received in the marine industry, with not only refit projects, but also many new builds on the go. What is the latest development at SYLKA carpets? We officially launched our Hand tufted ranges at this year’s Decorex at Sion Park and i have to say i was extremely proud to be showing them on our awardwinning stand. moving into the hand crafted sector has opened up a whole new world to us at SYLKA. Using our highly acclaimed nuSilk fibre, we can now create any design or

texture utilising as many colours as you like, to create something quite unique and beautiful. Everything we have produced to date has looked absolutely stunning! Are there any particular achievements of which you are particularly proud? i am always delighted when we win awards, and we have been fortunate to win quite a few in our time. in fact, in 2015 and 2016 we were named the national Brand of the United Arab Emirates by the Luxury Lifestyle Awards. However, recently, our focus has been on the luxury yacht sector and we have been overwhelmed with the orders and enquiries that we are receiving. See more at www.sylkacarpets.com

Next Generation Design Robert Mortimer, National Sales Manager at carpet manufacturer Heckmondwike, looks at how carpet design is helping to make higher education institutions more appealing to students.

D

esign is increasingly important in the decision about choice of higher education college or university. research has shown that over a third of students have rejected a college or university, due to the quality of its building and lack of facilities. the research involved 1,000 British students who were questioned on their views on the quality of their university campus. 76% of students ranked buildings and facilities as either ‘quite’ or ‘very’ important in their choice and it was the fourth most important factor after course, location, and reputation of the university. With competition amongst colleges and universities becoming stronger, it is little wonder that these institutions are choosing to invest back into the design of their buildings.

Sheet: 28 - File: body.pdf

Aesthetics are becoming increasingly important in higher education design, and universities and colleges are moving away from choosing carpets and carpet tiles for purely functional reasons. in

the last few years, we have recognised a trend for higher education buildings to move away from neutral colours to more colourful shades in carpet, like red, purple and orange. interior designers are also choosing accents of colour to be integrated within a lecture or study space, and are using carpet to indicate to students where they should navigate along a route to ease traffic flow. Colourful carpet, such as the extensive choice available in our Supacord range, is being selected to mark out specific zones, for example, breakout spaces and private study areas, creating a stimulating and aesthetically pleasing environment. Universities are also choosing colourful carpet for their entrance areas too, as they recognise that they can integrate the flooring with bespoke logos and customised colours. Some institutions also opt to have their branding integrated within their entrance area carpet, to add impact and reinforce the values as soon as students or visitors walk through the door.

our Creative range is also being widely specified in higher education environments, as it brings a designer element to lecture theatres or study rooms. in many cases, Array or night Sky are used in conjunction with bold colours from the Broadrib range, creating a contemporary aesthetic in a wide variety of settings. in an increasingly competitive market, it is essential that higher education institutions carefully consider interior design, including choice of good quality floorcoverings. the benefits in terms of reduced noise levels, better comfort, and a sense of design help to enhance the student experience, demonstrating just how important it is to get these factors right. lumi is light beyond ordinary lumi is a new, British based lighting company that creates ambient lighting concepts which are truly adaptive to your mood, task and lifestyle. lumi products are driven by a simple design philosophy which permeates everything we do - our products explore the purity of geometric forms and their interrelationship. We don’t believe in extraneous decoration, but strive for beautiful products derived from the purity of their form, and the honesty of their elements.

Sheet: 32 - File: body.pdf

lumi designers work exclusively with LED technology. The low energy consumption of LED technology allows our products to use substantially less power than traditional lamp technologies, reducing the CO2 consumption of our customers. The move away from the traditional has enabled us to explore new geometries and forms, and tailor our products to conform to our overarching design philosophy.

surface of the bookstand allows lumi book to be set at three angles, controlling the amount of light given out. lumi book is available in two colours - black and white. This monochromatic colour palette was chosen to emphasise the purity of the geometric shapes which create the product. In addition to the product colours lumi book offers two lighting options - white and spectral white. The white version uses an opal diffuser on the internal optical array. This minimalistic aesthetic becomes a pure representation of the lumi design ideology, giving the white light versions a clean contemporary look. The spectral white version filters the LED light sources through multi-coloured polycarbonate diffusers, which simulate the coloured components of white light. The effect is that each individual point of coloured light is recombined to create white light.

Our first to market product is lumi book, which was inspired by the simple action of opening and closing a book. Comprised of two hinged lighting entities - which can be repositioned in relation to the other - it can primarily be used as an ambient lighting tool, creating atmosphere, illuminating objects and gently washing walls and ceilings. However, its ability to be opened wide or even flat, means it can be used as an uplighter, downlighter, shelf, corner and/ or floor lighter. It also provides ample and variable lighting for tasks, activities and reading. This flexibility coupled with minimal, sublime design fits into modern interiors, blending in or becoming a striking contemporary object when placed prominently. The concept of adaptability informed our second product, specifically designed and developed as an accessory for lumi book – lumi bookstand. The bookstand increases not only the visual presence of lumi book, but also the ways it can deliver its light. The bookstand’s circular geometry sits in counterpoint to the square form of the book, providing a juxtaposition of geometric forms. The slots in the upper

Make It A Feature…

Designer radiators are now considered as important for interior schemes as flooring and furnishings - the ugly corrugated steel offering of old no longer cuts it! Jason Temple, Head of Sales at Feature Radiators looks at the current trends.

R

adiators can be used to create a feature with a contrasting colour or bold design. Cast iron models bring authenticity to traditional themes, and sleek minimal models can be used in a matching colour to blend away into the walls. there is now a wide range of fantastic stylish and affordable options to complement any interior scheme.

Sheet: 34 - File: body.pdf

the trend continues for industrial style interiors, characterised by stripped back surfaces, bare brick, concrete, rough weathered wood surfaces, salvaged objects, and exposed iron pipework or beams. radiators that complement this style are solid and robust in design and finished in matt or metallic paintwork or bare metal. the Core multicolumn is a classic example, available in a wide range of sizes and in electric as well as central heating formats. it’s cool bare metal finish not only complements industrial interiors, but also sits well with white

walls and soft woods of Scandinavian inspired spaces. the Spiro 2 with its finned tubes brings industrial chick to the party and makes an impressive statement. Lines & shapes: Wall saving linear vertical radiators are increasingly popular, providing a neat solution where space is limited, for example in bathrooms, hotel bedrooms, or restaurants. Vertical radiators also bring aesthetic advantages as they create the illusion of space, a higher ceiling and an overall less cluttered look. there are a wide range of vertical designs now available, from minimal styles to those that double up as works of art. A simple yet stylish new offering worth checking out is the inD, with its round tubes that curve at the top and bottom. the inD has a great heat output and fits easily into an industrial or any modern interior. Colours & finishes: interiors colours are confident, featuring bold shades of spicy

red, ocean blue, and graphite grey. For a more subtle colour palette, the trend seems to be shifting towards soft bluegreen, earthy green and taupe and light pastels in grey, yellow, aqua and pink. there is also a trend towards finishes in copper. these colours and finishes are widely available for radiators, meaning you can tie them into the overall scheme. Strong colours are popular for large spaces such as reception areas, open-plan kitchens, or hallways, whilst subtle shades can be used to tone with interior décor for a softer feel. multi-column radiators look stunning in a copper finish, such as the Coppa or the cast iron Forge. the UK radiator market offers a wide choice for the architect, builder, designer and homeowner, but quality, design, and innovation are the key and, if you specify a product that not only looks stylish but performs well and will stand the test of time, then you won’t go far wrong. Capturing the building’s warm aesthetic was key to this project; making guests feel invited and comfortable was fundamental to the building’s interior. Large stylistic oval-shaped suspension lights glow beautifully above tables in the meeting room, as well as another two gorgeous round suspended fittings complementing the room’s already comfortable aesthetic. Wagamama, UK Designing a lighting scheme for such a popular chain served to be quite the challenge! our intention was to create a unified theme across the entire restaurant, allowing customers to eat in a comfortable and welcoming environment.

We supplied a bespoke combination of special black and gold suspended lights, track spots and wall lights, all with discreet-dimming LED sources of light, to provide a comfortable environment for diners. Being designed and manufactured in-house makes it possible to accommodate any changes or different sizes for each individual store to be accomplished with ease. VIP Tunnel Club, MCFC, Manchester the renovation of the manchester City Football Club was no easy job. our aim was to invoke a warm and inviting atmosphere within a very open space. the Skan pendants look beautiful hanging over the dining area, giving the space a slick and professional feel. innovative concrete wall lights offer a unique and fresh sensation throughout the building. interesting custom made

DMU Wins Student Challenge The team from De Montfort University has been awarded first place at the BIID’s Student Design Challenge 2017.

O

pen exclusively to final year Interior Design and Architecture students from across the UK, the Student Design Challenge returned for its third successful year. The one day competition took place on Saturday 18th November at the impressive showroom of furniture manufacturer Herman Miller, in central London. Designed to foster creative ideas and teamwork skills, the Student Design Challenge offers an invaluable experience for students looking to progress further in a design career.

Sheet: 44 - File: body.pdf

Nominated by their course directors, six students each from eight Interior Design and Interior Architecture courses across the UK were invited to take part in the event. The teams taking part in the challenge this year included students from the University of Bedfordshire, University of Lincoln, Anglia Ruskin University, Glasgow Caledonian University, University of Dundee, De Montfort University, Ulster University and the University of Hertfordshire. The design brief was revealed on the day, and teams had just six hours to develop a design proposal before presenting to the panel of judges. Students were asked to consider a ‘Hub for the Third Age’; a new type of public space that could accommodate older people looking for employment opportunities. The competing teams were challenged to redesign a space to perform three main functions; to act as a job centre assisting older people returning to the workforce, to create a social space for

networking, and as a classroom to improve digital and technical skills. Each team was assigned a BIID mentor, a professional practising interior designer, to offer advice and feedback throughout the challenge. The mentors this year included BIID Council Director Matthew Freeman, BIID Past President Diana Yakeley OBE, as well as BIID members Sara Corker, Lester Bennet, May Fawzy, Gwendoline Alderton, Yentl Flo and MC and Student Director of the BIID Lindsey Rendall. The CAD-free competition meant that students could only present hand-drawn sketches, drawings and models as part of their proposals. This year, BIID President Charles Leon led the judging panel, accompanied by Bertie Van Wyk, Workplace Specialist at Herman Miller; Maureen Whyberd, Senior Community Development Manager at Open Age and Frances Judge an active member of the Open Age community.

cast their winning votes, awarding De Montfort University as the winner. The judges felt that this particular proposal carefully considered the brief, the needs of the end-users as well as the existing space, and delivered an innovative design solution. University of Dundee and the University of Lincoln took joint second place. The winning team from De Montfort University included Tutor Stuart Wright, Mentor Mathew Freeman, and students Kimberley Webberburn, Ella Chandler Lewis, Lucia Twitchell-Requena, Jasmin Patel, Elei-Mai Tully-Brown, Liam Sansom, and Bavisha Chavda. For more information, visit www.biid.org.uk.

The judges were looking for the design that met the brief in the most creative and original way, demonstrating impressive problem solving and collaborative teamwork skills. After reviewing each proposal, the judges

Opportunity Knocks It has been an eventful and exciting year for the BCFA as we continued to host our popular networking events, as well as seeing our members showcase some of their best products and inventive ideas at our BCFA Open exhibitions held in London, Manchester, and Dublin.

W

ith more opportunities for our members to get involved in, and a developing association, this year has given us the chance to experiment with creative innovative ideas to help us grow and understand members’ wants and needs. Our sell-out event of the year, the Annual Luncheon held at the Dorchester in November, was as successful as ever with no signs of slowing down. This year the choice of venues for our events were as stunning and unique as ever, including eating under a plane at the Museum of Science and Industry for our Northern Dinner, a rooftop BBQ at the King Street Townhouse in Manchester, and a networking event at the stunning Laurent Perrier Room in Birmingham. Our networking events are a great benefit to membership and we look forward to hosting them again during 2018.

Sheet: 46 - File: body.pdf

As well as our own events, the BCFA also attend and exhibit at events across the UK and internationally to support members. Our biggest success this year includes the likes of Sleep, where an incredible 48 BCFA members were exhibiting! It’s great to have so many members in one place as it gives our marketing team the opportunity to capture some of the great products on film, and hold Q&As. Promotional material for our events and exhibitions is supported by Design Insider Live, our online marketing magazine. The BCFA are also known for our export opportunities, helping members and other British companies to expand their markets internationally. This year, BDNY was a remarkable success, as there were 10 BCFA members exhibiting and keeping the team out in New York very

Guests at the Northern Dinner sitting underneath a replica of an early aircraft invented by Manchester-born Alliot Verdon Roe busy. We continued our success in the UAE market at Index Dubai and Hotel Show Dubai. This year, UK India Business Council (UKIBC) and the BCFA hosted a seminar on the topic of ‘Opening up New Markets in India.’ The event was a great success with some positive feedback and we will be looking to hold more export knowledge-based events during 2018. This year our membership has grown with some fantastic new names, the

latest being Romo, market leader in designer fabrics and wallcoverings. We look forward to working and engaging with our members during 2018 to continue creating opportunities. From everyone at the BCFA, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! For further information please visit www.thebcfa.com and www.designinsiderlive.com

An A-OK HQ! Solus Ceramics have made their mark in an extensive project which saw this iconic building’s Grade A office accommodation overhauled, extended and refurbished.

W

estside was initially developed in 1990 as a landmark headquarters building providing 175,000 sq ft of office accommodation, together with three full height reception areas, a security building, and 730 car parking spaces. When the design team at Sonnemann Toon first visited the site, it was clear that the uninspiring and underachieving building required a full refurbishment. Fortunately the base structure had been constructed to a high level and the shell and facade were robustly detailed. A rigorous feasibility study investigated options to maximise the net internal area of the floors and enhance the layout of the building. This was achieved through removing three staircases, infilling terraces, balconies, and external undercover ground floor areas. This increased the net internal area by approximately 8,012 sq ft to 99,274 sq ft without the need to increase the building footprint.

Sheet: 51 - File: body.pdf

The proposed works included a full CAT A refurbishment of the office floors, common parts, reception, and toilets. The mechanical, electrical and public health infrastructure was replaced and the six passenger lifts were completely overhauled and modernised. Solus Ceramics were delighted to work with Sonnemann Toon to supply tiles to the reception atrium and the WCs. Dramatic large format 1200mm x 1200mm tiles from the concrete-inspired Horizon range create a bold welcome at Westside, with the rustically worn design of the tiles providing a warm aesthetic in the wide, open space. In the WCs and shower facilities, light and bright stone-effect porcelain tiles

from the Gorges 2 range were applied in both wall and floor areas. The limestoneeffect tiles create a chic and modern ambience that is also easy to maintain and clean. “The design team worked closely to overcome site issues, and all parties worked hard to deliver a project to be proud of,” said Tim Bennett, Associate, Sonnemann Toon Architects LLP. “The works have extended the life of a building that was once tired and lifeless. Now the building is bright, clean, modern, and bustling with activity fit for the next 20 years.” For more information, call Solus Ceramics on 0121 753 0777, email sales@solusceramics.com or visit www.solusceramics.com
