Jess Lavers

A Week In the Life Of Jess Lavers BIID Registered interior designer Jess Lavers has always loved the design world and has a long standing history of working in this sector. After a previous career as a jewellery designer, Jess went on to study at the KLC School of Design and founded her own practice, Jess Lavers Design, in 2011. Jess has lived in both India and Africa, and as an avid traveller, she is inspired by design from all over the globe and has a deep love for colours, patterns, and unusual textiles. Her genuine personality combined with her passion for design ensures that all clients receive the highest level of professionalism. Monday I can’t do anything without my daily cup of Earl Grey which I sip on whilst listening to the morning news in my lovely Notting Hill apartment. I jump in the car and head on down to the studio, which is strategically positioned in Chelsea – just off the Kings Road. It’s a co-working space full of creative start-ups, and the bright, airy environment makes for a great atmosphere. Each Monday starts with our team meeting where we review our pipeline of work over fresh coffee and talk through the progress of all our projects. We are lucky enough to have a great variety of work so we are continually challenged and fully engaged. Today we are focusing on our Queens Gardens project – a beautiful Grade II listed

building near Paddington overlooking a leafy square. Our developer client has recently acquired the entire building and is creating luxury apartments set out over the five floors of the building, which will come to market early in 2017. I am keen to achieve a timeless look in the communal parts and then to give each apartment an identity of its own. At the moment, I am working on some initial ideas for the concept – I am imagining dark herringbone floors, cast iron radiators, sleek, modern kitchens with Carrara marble worktops and gloss cabinets, geometric patterned fabrics, luxuriously deep buttoned headboards, antique distressed mirror panels inlaid into the wall panels in the corridors, and oversized antique French crystal chandeliers. We use pinterest to

12 : in.HER LIFE pool our initial ideas as it helps us build the scheme before we transfer everything into a client presentation. I want to keep building the concept but suddenly the day has run away with me and I need to get to my physio appointment this evening. Where did Monday go?

Jess at work in the studio

Tuesday Today I am heading to Kempton Park Antiques Market which calls for an early start! I am sourcing furniture for a client who is keen to find a farmhouse style dining table and some benches to match. As a regular visitor I have my set route and really enjoy chatting with the dealers and searching for hidden gems. Even though I am here to search for my client, I usually come across something irresistible for my own home. I love painting, gilding and reupholstering items myself, so there is often a little project waiting for me. Success! I leave the market having bought an old French refectory table and two old church pews for my client. I’ll dress the pews with blue and white ticking cushions to give my client’s contemporary kitchen the eclectic look he has asked for. The afternoon is spent at my desk trawling through the endless emails and admin that every designer spends their time on constantly! Tonight is a very special evening as a childhood friend takes me to see Coldplay at Kensington Palace Gardens. I’m looking glamorous in my plastic poncho to ward off the rain! It’s an unforgettable night of music and fun.

The Mayfair Bar at the Connaught Hotel as possible per week. I love this form of exercise and it keeps me sane and balanced as well as fit! The rest of the day is spent in a meeting with my management consultant who keeps me on track. These meetings tend to be long and intensive, as we talk about everything from how best to manage my staff to marketing strategy. After absorbing so much information the only option for tonight is a Thai takeaway, Netflix and a huge glass of wine. Thursday One of the great things about being a designer is the enormous scope of the job – one minute I’ll be in high heels and lipstick for client presentations and the next, like today, I am on a dusty building site in a hard hat and hi-vis vest. Today I’m at

We take a tour of the entire building and my super-efficient assistant, Dominique, busily takes photos of the whole site for us to refer to when we are back in the studio whilst I’m visualising the finished project. I love being on site when the project’s a skeleton, picturing how it will all be when we’ve worked our magic. We then head straight to another site nearby for our next meeting. The build on this family home in a pretty mews near Paddington is finally coming to a close and we are beginning to measure for curtains. This is a quick and easy job as I have a fantastic relationship with our curtain team who we can always rely on to do an amazing job. Once back in the office, we download our site photos and set to the curtain schedule for the mews house. Tonight I’m meeting a friend at the

exquisitely designed bar at the Connaught Hotel – a real jewel of a design by the phenomenally talented late David Collins. After a couple of delicious rose and champagne cocktails, I bump into an old client whose Notting Hill townhouse I designed a few years ago. He very generously takes me to the Mandarin Oriental for dinner which is a massive treat and I fall asleep dreaming of the 1920’s glamour of the Connaught. What a day.

Five phone calls later, I have two men standing on the roof of the building who drop straps down the exterior walls and winch the bed (by hand, with extreme manpower!) up the walls, over the balcony and then carry it through the French windows. The artwork is hung, cushions are plumped, rugs are down, throws are thrown and we hand over to a very happy client. At last it’s the weekend and time to wind down and relax.

Friday Thank God it’s Friday! It’s been a long week and today we are busy installing a family home in Notting Hill. This is always the most exciting part of any project, because you see all your hard work coming together – but boy, it can be tiring!

Saturday Saturday is spent with my boyfriend wandering along Portobello and stopping into Fabrique for the perfect cup of coffee and one of their famous Swedish cardamom buns. We both buy panama hats at the market ready for our next holiday in Greece and then meet some of our friends for a lovely al fresco supper. Some relaxation before it all begins again!

Today is no exception and the challenge of the day is how to get the upholstered double divan bed base up to the second floor master bedroom as it won’t fit up the

JOI-Design consider that creative illumination has become increasingly important in hotels

Inn-ovative Illumination Creating lighting schemes for hospitality venues needs careful consideration – we look at some great solutions for reception lobbies, restaurants, and spas.

P

eter Joehnk, co-managing director of JOI-Design (www. joi-design.com) told us that the scope of what clients expect from hospitality interior designers has grown more holistic than ever, which means that in addition to developing concepts that address sound and smell, we are also frequently asked to develop lighting schemes, often in partnership with a lighting designer. “Creative illumination has become increasingly important in hotels, he

in.VOGUE : 19 explained. “A trend we have observed is the desire to have crisp differentiation between a dark background and a clearly lit focal point. Ambient lighting should be recessed in the ceiling to be nearly invisible, while carefully directed beams ‘set the scene’ by calling attention to important elements in the space.” Injecting a sense of playfulness through illuminated decorative features is also popular. A good example can be seen with JOI-Design’s project ‘Hotel Reichshof Hamburg CURIO Collection by Hilton’ where

downlights are directionally oriented to highlight elements on the walls, but they are recessed into channels within the ceiling so they are unobtrusive. In the lobby, very slim and almost invisible LED strips emphasise the capitals of the columns, while the chandeliers’ original Empire era metal fittings have taken on a 21st century twist with decorative fuchsia panels that introduce a lively vibrancy. “We enjoyed teaming up with lighting designer Marcus Feltsch who, as the lighting designer for the public areas, worked with

us to create these eye-catching pieces,” said Peter. Another example of wonderfully atmospheric lighting can be found in chef Kevin Fehling’s three Michelin-starred restaurant, The Table, in Hamburg. Interior designer Heyroth + Kuerbitz worked with lighting designer Occhio to create stunning drama with spotlights that direct the focus of guests towards the chefs and the culinary delights being prepared right before their eyes.

designpluslight.com). “Lighting has the ability to transform the space at the touch of a button. It’s by layering the lighting effects that a sense of luxury and opulence can be achieved.” The rapid development of LED technology allows the designer to select from a much broader lighting palette. Lights have become smaller, thinner and brighter, allowing them to become more integral to the fabric of the design than ever before.

Back lit panels of light give the impression of day-lit windows (DesignPlusLight) “Great lighting is a key ingredient in making a positive impression,” added Peter, “so it is essential that the interiors and the illumination work hand-in-hand to craft a specific experience which lingers in the minds of guests, directs the flow within the space, and supports the overarching design concept.”

appeal was paramount in the decisionmaking for the interior choices.

When The Castle Hotel, Windsor was in need of a complete refurb of their dining and lounge areas they called upon Trevillion Interiors, Hertford, for their interior design services.

Boatswain Lighting specialise in translucent porcelain designs, pushing the boundaries of this ancient material, and incorporating it with modern design and lighting technologies. The translucency of the Nuage Chandeliers appealed to Trevillion Interiors, and provided just the right atmosphere and ambience, creating the softness and timeless qualities only natural porcelain can provide.

The Castle Hotel sits on Windsor’s High Street, close to Windsor Castle and opposite Sir Christopher Wren’s Windsor Guildhall. Starting life in 1528 as an inn, brewing beer and cider, and offering a few rooms for the locals, it evolved over the centuries to become the boutique hotel of today. It was important that the history of the building was still present in the make-over, and for this reason the heritage ‘DNA’ country house

This is where the Nuage Chandelier, an elegant style with a gentle formality designed by Boatswain Lighting (www. boatswainlighting.co.uk) was the ideal centre piece for the dining room and lounge areas.

“Successful lighting in the hotel industry has always been to enhance the architectural merits and the interior design elements of the space,” stated Sanjit Bahra, Design Director, DesignPlusLight (www.

“A sense of intimacy, traditionally created with table lamps, can now be achieved by detailing lighting into joinery elements, creating display features and focal points to give a sense of opulence to the interior,” explained Sanjit. “Reflected light from these pieces add to a sense of intimacy and warmth to the space.” LED technology enables lighting to be installed in previously inaccessible locations and create extraordinary effects. Back-lit panels of light were installed into this underground spa (pictured) to give the impression of day-lit windows. Two panels, white and colour-changing LED, were seamlessly detailed behind frosted glass to the side wall of the pool, all within a 50mm render. Programmed to subtly change colour from a crisp ‘daylight’ white to warmer colour temperatures, they evoke the progression of dawn to sunset as the day progresses. “Spas are often hard spaces with little opportunity to be softened with fabric,” Sanjit said. “Creative lighting design adds layers of texture and focus within the space. The result is a feeling of luxury and opulence.”

From Home To Holiday Home Working with a client who is considering letting out their property to holidaymakers can be an exciting challenge, with plenty to consider. Leanne Jones, Quality Programme Assessor at Blue Chip Holidays, explains.

I

n an upmarket holiday home, it’s important to maintain the ‘wow’ factor for every new guest; unique fabrics and accessories and local artwork will give the property a personality that will appeal to potential guests before they even arrive, via the imagery in a brochure or online. Jan McGready, our property photographer, is an expert at making properties come to life through inspirational photography. “I usually place a few items within the frame to give the photos a little more life and feeling, such as fresh flowers, some good looking fruit and wine, or anything that may ignite a guest’s imagination to want to be there,

looking at that view.” Using high quality photography in advertising is very important as it’s usually the deciding factor that nudges somebody from browser to guest. However, it’s not only the quality of the photography that makes a difference, but what there is to photograph. It’s no surprise that the properties that get the most attention from our guests are those where the property owner has paid particular attention to detail with the interior. Guests expect quality, and so they should. They’ve worked hard for their holiday, and they want their chosen property to feel like a real home, somewhere they can relax

and get some well-earned respite from the stresses of everyday life, so it’s not the time to compromise on quality; your guests will know if you’ve tried to cut corners. If you are in the early stages of refurbishing a property or would just like to give your property a makeover ready for next season, we can offer advice and guidance every step of the way.

In The Hot Seat! Commercial and office seating performs multiple tasks; providing comfort at the workstation, it also needs to be on-brand for its corporate environment

“T

he most noticeable trend in the past 6-12 months is the sizeable shift in fabric design and colour,” explained Richard Hodges, Marketing Manager, PSI Seating (www.psiseating.co.uk). “Subtle tones are in abundance and the theme is certainly natural, leaning heavily on ‘earthy’ shades and palettes. “As manufacturers, we are little more than influencers when it comes to the fabric we upholster our seating products with. We know which fabrics work best with which products and can provide insight when our customers require it. Ultimately the decision lies with the client or the specifier but we must remain on the pulse of current trends. To that end, we recently redecorated our showroom, ensuring cohesion between fabrics on show and those used as upholstery.”

Seeing and testing a seating product in the flesh is still the most effective route,

in.VOGUE : 23 garnering aspects that images and business information modelling fail to, thus proving the necessity for your showroom to be well stocked and boasting the latest trends. “The use of wood is ever increasing in the soft seating arena,” Richard added. “In the past certain breakout seating options would be available with chrome/silver sled frames, star bases and four-leg options. To not have a wood/timber leg caveat in the specification now seems ludicrous with its increasing popularity and demand. Some fabrics that on their own appear too wacky or ‘out there’ can be given a new lease of life by a wooden frame, and I for one think it’s here to stay.” Trinetic from Boss Design (www.bossdesign.com) is a unique task chair that incorporates a brand new type of movement to create a superior and completely natural user experience. Trinetic has no manual user adjustments. Instead, it uses three independent pivot points that combine to create a chair that ‘follows’ rather than resists the user. This promotes better support through a wide range of body movements, and has been proven to increase contact with the user’s body through the full length of the seat and back surface compared to traditional synchronised mechanisms. Boasting a sophisticated and refined aesthetic, Trinetic is built around an aluminium cradle, which can be finished in a wide array of styles. It can be supplied in any combination of mesh, fabric or leather seat and backrest, together with a choice of four and five-star base options. It is ideal for those who want a task chair, but can also be specified as a touchdown work, meeting or conference chair.

Instead, the Trinetic video can be uploaded onto our clients’ intranets in order to educate users of the product’s benefits.” Sway2 from KI (www.kieurope.com) is a revolutionary lounge seating collection, featuring a unique gyroscopic motion which self-adjusts to the user’s preferred seating style. Sway2 offers true freedom of movement, allowing the user to gently move frontto-back, swing side-to-side and swivel 360 degrees. Its generous cushion and body support ensure maximum comfort in any position. Both versatile and durable, it is ideal for receptions, collaborative environments and breakout areas. The chair’s rotationally moulded seat and base is constructed of Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE), one of the most commonly used and easily recyclable plastics in the world, and post-consumer recycled plastic. Built to withstand highdemand environments, it comes with a structural lifetime warranty, while its upholstery cushions can easily be replaced. Large expanses of glazing are softened with bold automated curtains

To Boldly Go… After graduating from university with a first class honours in Interior Design, BIID Registered Interior Designer®, Helen Knox joined the well-established family-run design company, Horton & Co. Now a Senior Interior Designer at Horton & Co, Helen works on a variety of high end residential and commercial projects.

E

stablished over 30 years ago, Horton & Co was originally set up as an Interior Design company. With expansive showrooms in Cheshire and Shropshire the company now offers a complete design service with in-house Architecture and Landscaping services, a curtain workroom, and joinery workshop. Run by creative directors Gillian Handley and Hannah Burton, the company works throughout the UK and internationally.

Recently, I was brought in to a luxury new build project in the heart of Cheshire. The client’s brief was for a fun, design led, contemporary family home where they could bring up their young family. Interestingly, on this occasion, the client was also the project architect. They had a clear vision for the design of the building but needed guidance and creative lead from Horton to inject the family’s creative and fun personality into the interior of the open plan space.

Strong masculine materials were used, such as feature sandstone walls

28 : in.BRIEF

I joined the project at an early stage as the client/architect understood that this would benefit the transition from build to interior design. This early appointment also allowed me to spend extra time with the client to fully understand their needs and requirements, as well as assess the layout of the build to grasp the location, size and orientation of the rooms. Many clients fail to bring an interior designer into the project at this point and many interior based questions can be forgotten, such as how window sizing can affect the furniture layout and how to address flow of space and floor junctions. As a team, we ensured that all these elements were discussed and designed thoroughly. Our in-house interior architect and furnishing designer also joined in on discussions, allowing the project to be collaborative and avoid any compromises on the Interior design. If I could sum up the direction of this creative brief in one word, it would be ‘bold.’ I’ve been waiting for a project where I can truly test a client’s sense of fun and playfulness. This client was really open to my bold ideas, which, for a designer, is always music to our ears!

The double-height hallway is stunning

Thanks to being involved at an early stage, I knew the client liked using strong masculine materials on the hard finishes, such as walnut, polished concrete and feature sandstone walls. To soften the space, and bring personality into the home, I covered the walls with colourful wallcoverings including textural papers that were used in most rooms. Large expanses of glazing were also softened with bold plain

Bespoke Italian imported granite is used in the bathrooms shots of silk, linen and embroidered automated curtains. As the client was designing the building herself, many areas of the project were artistically tweaked during the build to suit her tastes. Standard furniture was not an option in a house with such style. I created feature chairs with bold statement patterns, bespoke sofas with integrated low level lamp tables, and designer pieces, including a

Thomas Heatherwick spun chair. The clients were well travelled and they wanted to incorporate this through fabrics, art and artefacts. Many of the fabrics I sourced were from Portuguese, French and Italian fabric houses to reflect a more flamboyant and daring style. A feature panelled wallcovering was installed on their loft landing which reminds the client of their time in Africa. International antiques were also sourced to give the interior a balanced feel. Old tribal African sculptures and antique

suitcases mimic their love of travelling once more. To add more excitement to the project, the client had her second child during construction. Although this made time constraints a bit tricky, the whole team pulled together to get the client into their new house as soon as possible. One of the biggest challenges we faced during this project was getting the bespoke Italian imported granite for the ensuite

Although this created some major delays to one of the ensuites, work continued throughout the rest of the house where three other bathrooms were available to the client.

Bespoke sofas with integrated low level lamp tables add comfort

This was one of my favourite projects to work on, so much so that it is hard to pick one beloved piece from a house which continually catches the eye with its eclectic pieces and bold use of colour. One of my favourite areas in the house is standing on the first floor landing looking down over the mezzanine entrance hall; the mix of polished concrete, walnut cladding and soft six-metre high linen curtains show the mix of materials that feature in the property. Another vista I love is the picture cantilevered window in the formal lounge; pure bliss when the client is curled up with a book amongst an array of cushions! This window looks out over a landscaped garden which mimics the neat architectural form of the house perfectly, but with soft, romantic planting. This avoids a sterile landscape and helps ground the house into its surroundings.

Fabrics, art and artefacts from the clients’ travels were incorporated

Since completing this project, our team has grown to include a landscape designer and architectural designer. Projects such as this benefit so much from having a collaborative team approach, where architecture, interiors and landscape professionals develop together. www.hortonandco.co.uk

Here & Now This autumn, The National Centre for Craft & Design presents Here & Now; the first major curated exhibition of contemporary tapestry in England for over 20 years

S

Erin riley, Self portrait, 2015

howcasing the breadth of international talent, the show challenges the notion of tapestry as a disappearing craft and marks a point in time for the artform. the exhibition is open from 1st october to 15th January 2017. Here & now demonstrates the commitment to contemporary tapestry internationally and features artists from Australia, Canada, norway, Latvia, Japan and the USA alongside British tapestry weavers. Each of the exhibition pieces has been carefully selected for its individual merit and ability to mark a point in time in the artist’s career, in textiles and in the modern world. the artists demonstrate the ways in which the narrative heritage of the medium can be used to engage with personal, aesthetic, and political issues of current concern. For example the Selfies of Erin m. riley, Saori Sakai’s dynamics of urban living, the political realities of Barbara Heller, the rural longings of Joan Baxter, or the lyrical narrative of rolands Krutovs. the works are energetic, witty, poetic and beautiful, and emphasise that the art of tapestry weaving is contemporary and relevant across the world.

Joan Baxter (detail) the exhibition has been developed in partnership with the international textile research Centre at the University for the Creative Arts and has been curated by Lesley millar. it will tour to the Holburne museum in Bath from 24th June 2017 to 1st october

2017, with other venues under discussion. For further information contact nCCD Head of Exhibitions Bryony Windsor at bryony@ nationalcraftanddesign.org.uk
