hile this magazine is just as focused on beauty as it is on hair, we decided to dedicate the majority of this issue to the latter. Following on from September’s beauty-orientated edition, the focal point of this month’s contents ties in perfectly with Salon International (ExCel, London; 12-14 October) from our eye-opening feature on the hairdressing tools that top stylists can’t live without (page 35-36) to our report on the very latest developments in the hair extensions sector (page 41-43). If you offer hair services in your salon then these are two features that you definitely shouldn’t miss. But of course this month it isn’t just all about hairdressing. October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month and some of the industry’s biggest manufacturers have unveiled super-covetable limited edition products to help raise money for the cause. With one person diagnosed with the disease in the UK every 10 minutes, it affects more people – particularly in an industry so dominated by women – than any other form of cancer. That said, advancements in treatment and diagnostics means that survival rates are improving. And these have only been made possible by the fundraising and awareness drives carried out by people – including those from the UK hair and beauty industry – all over the world. So with this in mind, we’ve hunted down some of the best pink products on offer this year to help you stock up your shelves and do your bit to stamp out Breast Cancer forever on page 30.
Elsewhere in this issue we’ve been thinking about the weeks leading up to the Christmas rush and what you can do now to ensure you’re busy the entire season. Toni and Guy celebrates fiftieth birthday with world’s first music festival dedicated to a hair brand
O
ver 4,000 hairdressers attended Toni and Guy’s 50-year anniversary celebrations last month at a music festival at Knebworth House. In addition to an awe-inspiring catwalk showcase that featured hair looks inspired by the past five decades, attendees from all corners of the globe were treated to the best of British urban music from headline acts Labrinth and Tinchy Stryder as well as dance tunes by Australian singer Iggy Azalea. Hair professionals from Toni and Guy’s salons across the globe arrived on the sunny September afternoon to the full festival experience, which included two stages, glamping tents, several food vans, bars and fairground rides as well as pop-up pampering lounges courtesy of Shu Uemura, Essie, ghd and L’Oreal Professionnel.
But the proceedings really got underway when the undercover main stage opened with a marching band leading guests inside the big top tent to more bars, a stage and a huge imposing catwalk. British fashion designer Giles Deacon even kept the crowds entertained with an exclusive DJ set. The Mascolo family were the first on stage and welcomed the crowd before announcing the winners of Toni and Guy’s annual awards. Following a musical interlude with a surprise performance by East London beatboxer Beardyman, the catwalk came alive with presentations from designers Giles and Jean-Pierre Braganza, who have both worked with the brand for several seasons. Guests were also able to look back at the salon group’s 50-year history with some of its most memorable re-created styles gracing the stage from the likes of Anthony Mascolo
and avant-garde star Indira Schauwecker. The show ended with representatives from all 46 countries Toni and Guy is present in taking to the catwalks to wave their nations’ flags. Revellers then continued the party well into the night and the next morning. Creative global director Sacha MascoloTarbuck says: “50 years is an impressive achievement for any brand and I am particularly proud to say that it is through my father’s hard work and dedication to every salon that we are still here today. After spending almost a year trying to create an event worthy to mark such an auspicious occasion, my aim was to include every single member of staff from across the globe to come together and celebrate something unique. This festival was all about paying respect to what has been but also looking firmly forward to the next 50 years and what they will bring.”

Happy birthday Karine Jackson celebrated its 10-year business milestone last month with a celebratory party for clients, industry peers and press. Guests – which included Margherita Taylor and Errol Douglas – joined the eponymous owner for champagne, canapés and cake.
Top salons, individuals and teams recognised at British Hairdressing Business Awards 2013 Some of the salon world’s most influential business minds gathered at London’s Lancaster Hotel last month for HJ’s annual British Hairdressing Business Awards 2013. Guests, which included salon owners, brand ambassadors and sponsors, arrived to a champagne reception followed by a three-course dinner before the names of the winners of 16 categories were announced. The evening’s biggest winner was London’s Michael Van Clarke, which received prizes for Retail Salon of the Year and Manager of the Year alongside the Customer Care Award. Others triumphing in the awards included Tommy’s Hair Company in Ruthin, Denbighshire and Spirit Hair Company in Wallingford, Oxfordshire for Salon of the Year One and Salon of the Year Two respectively as well as Leicester’s Kyle Beasley Hairdressing for Independent Salon – Business Newcomer, Rainbow Room International for Front of House Team of the Year (pictured above) and Hooker and Young’s Jonathan Turner for Junior of the Year. “The finalists this year were very impressive and it was important that the ambition and commitment behind each of them was recognised,” says HJ’s publishing director Jayne Lewis-Orr. “The judges had a difficult task but through our strict and confidential process, the right winners were recognised on the night.”
Creative Head toasts the industry’s finest hairdressing talent at Most Wanted and It List Grand Final Creative Head celebrated hairdressing’s most prominent stars inside the Natural History Museum last month at its glittering Most Wanted and It List Grand Final. The awards have recognised the best of British hair talent since launching in 2001 and this year finalists battled it out for 17 categories ranging from Best Salon Team to The It Girl and Guy. Dedicated to rising stars, the names making this year’s It List included Sally Montague’s Angel Montague-Sayers, Trevor Sorbie’s Anna Chapman and Jonathan De Francesco from Brooks and Brooks. Meanwhile, the biggest prizes of the evening came from the Most Wanted categories with the likes of Eugene Souleiman (Hair Icon), Sam McKnight (Session Stylist) and Errol Douglas (Creative Talent) taking individual trophies back to their salons. The individual winners were also joined by triumphing teams such as London’s Percy and Reed and Barrie Stephen Hair in Leicester, which were crowned Best Salon Experience and Best Local Salon respectively.

INDUSTRY UPDATE Freddie’s hair salon in Cheshire makes shortlist for My Best Local Independent Shop accolade Lancashire salon owner Freddie Cunliffe received a letter from the House of Commons last month after his business was nominated for Rossendale’s My Best Local Independent Shop competition. The awards, championed by local MP Jake Berry, celebrate the best businesses in the area and are offering a first place prize that includes free mentoring from the National Skills Academy for Retail. Established in 1992, Freddie’s has been nominated six times in the British Hairdressing Awards and won the Schwarzkopf Professional Northern Creative Team accolade. Cunliffe commends: “It was an honour to receive the letter and an amazing surprise to be nominated for the awards. After being on Bank Street in Rossendale for 21 years, it is welcome recognition for the salon and what it brings to the community. Entrants uploaded their images to Facebook.com/MHDStudents before they were judged by a panel of experts which included Adam Reed, Stacey Broughton Steve Turner and Callam Warrington. West’s retro-inspired image featuring “a classic ‘50s pin-up girl with a modern edge” wowed the judges leading her to winning first place. HTC chooses Metropolis manager to create avant-garde hair for new technology launch Technology giant HTC enlisted Metropolis’ Ceri Cushen recently to create a avant-garde hair look for the launch of its latest camera phone technology. The hairdresser drew inspiration from a collection she created last year to create a “dark, gothic, haute couture” inspired look. Working with fashion photographer Miss Aniela, the model was shot by attendees – which included key fashion editors – against a detailed backdrop on HTC’s latest handset to showcase its ability to capture flawless images. Cushen says: “I love working with Miss Aniela as her projects are some of the most creative I have seen. It was really a pleasure to be part of such an unusual event and incredible to hear how much everyone loved the model’s hair. Creating a Twitter buzz of top fashion press sharing an image of my creation felt very rewarding – I absolutely love getting involved in such projects outside the salon.”

Anne Veck’s Oxford salon held a men’s grooming day in collaboration with Quitus Advanced Skin Care Clinics of Abingdon recently. It aimed to encourage men to use grooming products to perfect their appearance, and all profits from the sales were donated to Oxfordshire Prostate Cancer Support Group. The Allilon Education Team underwent an action-packed teambuilding day at outdoor Forest Adventure playground Go Ape. Co-directors Pedro Inchenko and Jonny Othona organised the team-bonding exercise to keep up morale and encourage the company’s staff to have some fun. Jim Shaw of Essensuals Billericay set up a pop-up barbershop backstage at this year’s V Festival. Bringing the pamper factor to the festival scene, the make-shift salon was kitted out with brands including Unite and Go 24.7. Celebrities visiting the team for grooming treatments included Olly Murs and One Direction’s Nial Horan. The latest graduates from Goldwell’s Color Expert course celebrated their achievements at the brand’s new Academy London last month having completed its world-class education programme. Academy manager Rachel Hurley presented the learners with their diplomas before wishing them a bright and colourful career in hairdressing.

Great expectations Everything you need to know now about offering a hair extensions service
O
nce dampened by a dark cloud of ethical and safety question marks, experts say the global hair extensions market is now growing at break-neck speed. Great Lengths, one of the biggest suppliers in the world, has reportedly experienced a 70 per cent business growth rate since 2008 while the Professional Beauty Association says the amount of salons offering the service in the US has risen by 28.5 per cent in the past two years. “Extensions have become fundamental part of many people’s hair regimes rather than a taboo,” says Chris King, head of education for Great Lengths in the UK. “Ladies and gentlemen are now wearing extensions with pride.” The boom is being put down to the consumer’s insatiable appetite for celebrity-inspired style. And the experts believe that salons who aren’t offering a hair extension fitting and styling service are almost certainly missing out on a vastly lucrative market. “Most women crave long, voluminous hair which hair extensions provide in an instant,” says Yanike Palmer, product development executive for Sleek UK. “This year alone we’ve sold almost half a million packets of hair extensions. Some customers are spending over £250 on purchasing the highest quality hair alone and are then paying to have them professionally applied to guarantee a flawless finish.” When you crunch the numbers, offering extensions in the salon is a no-brainer when it comes to boosting profits. According to Seema Flower, founder of hair salon ColourNation which offers the service in London’s Oxford Circus, her clients pay an average of £800 for each full head – earning the salon around £460 in gross profit. Meanwhile, Ann Veck’s Oxford salon charges its clients separately for the hair they require alongside a 15 per cent admin cost and then from £68 per hour for application on top. But the profit potential doesn’t end here

The micro-ring method has become a popular choice for hairdressers and clients alike, as the system means that a full head can often be applied in one hour while they’re also comfortable to wear and the same hair can even be re-used – making it even cheaper for cost conscious clients. Clip-in extensions and wefts on invisible wires are also highly popular among clients looking for quick changes without commitment. “Customers have become much more hands-on when it comes to extensions, resulting in a massive spurge of DIY-type product introductions in the last few years,” says Palmer. “Fringes can be clipped on and off in an instant, wefts can be pre-glued to caps to create personalised wigs, and some human hair brands are specifically created for at-home colouring.” But much more than a mere fashion statement, increasing numbers of women are seeing extensions as a solution to hair loss, breakage and thinning – and many of these products that are kinder to the natural hair offer a sound solution: “I think that women have to cope with hair loss problems a lot earlier now due to higher stress levels,” says award-winning extensions stylist and educator Michelle Griffin. “I think we’ll see a lot more systems becoming available to accommodate this and if salon owners are wise, they will move forward in this way.”
Masterminding your menu So with so many types of systems on offer, how can salons pick and choose what’s best for their business? Statham recommends: “Salons should offer their clients a range of extension system types to ensure they have something to suit all – these include a temporary service, a semi-permanent option and a permanent one such as bonds.” Delving into the selection process a bit deeper, King believes the client should always be king when it comes to quality and service: “While cost is paramount in most cases, salon owners must also consider hair quality, application methods, education and salon support from their supplier,” he says. “The real key to a profitable extensions business within the salon is happy customers.” Meanwhile, Anita Francis, founder of AFI Hair Extensions, says salon owners should whittle down systems using their own brand values as a guide. “Start with your salon’s target market and determine what type of hair extension system would be suitable in the area,” she says. “This

should also of course consider the price level your clients can afford. A range of clip-on wefts and a single strand method to get you started would be a good initial move forward but speak to your clients and ask them what their preferences are first.”
A word of warning Thanks to the consumer press, we’re all too familiar with the perils of a hair extensions service gone badly. With this in mind, it’s essential for salons to safeguard themselves against potential issues so their entire business isn’t jeopardised. As Ann Veck says: “While hair extensions are a very high earning service, they are potentially high risk in terms of customer complaints. Be sure you’ve done a very thorough consultation and don’t hesitate to turn the client away if she’s unsuitable for the service. It’s expensive so the client will have a very high expectation – it’s important to make sure they are realistic so that you under promise and over deliver.” Griffin agrees that the consultation process is crucial to building a successful hair extensions division. She adds: “Having a good consultation with the client beforehand is imperative as you need to get a real feel for what they really want. From a consultation you can find out why
your client wants extensions, how long they want them for and what their budget is. And it goes without saying that you should also offer good after care advice. This lets the client know what they need to do to get the best out of their extensions and gives them the opportunity to come back to the salon every six weeks for maintenance.” Moreover, Anita Francis stresses the importance of comprehensive training: “Quality training is essential as knowledge is everything. Unfortunately hair extensions have had bad press due to lack of training. If used correctly, they can be amazing and life changing for some clients. However, if applied and removed incorrectly, they can lead to hair loss and very unhappy clients. In my opinion a one-day training course is not enough to learn this amazing skill.” But with all the pros and cons aside, it’s no good offering a hair extensions service if there isn’t the demand for one among your client base. “Hair extensions require a major investment in training a specialist equipment, which can run up to thousands of pounds,” says ColourNation’s Seema Flower. “It does add another string to your bow, but make sure you can reasonably see enough demand to help you recover that investment.”

Whereas other wholesalers that offer that service are sending the scissors to the factory in Germany to be serviced – which can take weeks.” At present the company is improving its furniture range and will soon be offering the new REM line as well as a large range
of reconditioned quality furniture for more budget-conscious salon owners that will be based out of a new showroom in Poulton. Social gathering The social networking phenomenon began in salons and it’s time the industry reclaimed it back, says Book ‘n’ Bloom’s Gerard Hoff

magine a world without the internet. That was the reality as recently ago as 1990. Before that the internet hardly existed – and it definitely wasn’t for the ordinary man on the street. These days it’s hard to imagine where we would be without it and it’s probably better if we don’t try. Because without the internet, the world would stop. Literally. There would be no communication, no power, no television, nothing. Although some might say that it would be very peaceful and quiet, the reality is that the human race would find it very hard to survive. The internet changed our lives in many ways – it made the world smaller, more accessible and it made the phenomenon of social media possible. To cite an example of how quickly this developed, consider this: it took radio 38 years to reach 50million people and it took television 13 years. It only took the internet four years to reach that number and the iPod managed it in three. Facebook, meanwhile, reached over 200million people in just one year. And today it has racked up over one billion users. This number would make it the third largest country on the planet after China and India and bigger than the USA. Facebook and all the other social media channels changed the way the world

does business. Not only did classical advertising lose its power, but it also forced businesses in general to smarten up their acts. Companies that don’t behave how their customers want them to are no longer able to hide. This is called the power of word-of-mouth. This power is being further enhanced by the fast growing mobile internet and
the increasing use of smart phones. Consumers today have the entire world in their pocket. This even changes our behaviour: when we don’t get what we want at the tip of our finger, we can become distressed. But should we be afraid of this new world of ever-changing technology? No, of course not. Social Media is the oldest
thing in the world. In fact, even before mankind could talk with words, we had social media. We used sticks to hit on hollow trees when there was danger or when we found something nice to eat and called for a celebration. So, when it is the oldest thing in the world, why are so many people talking about it and why are we describing it as the ‘new big thing’? It is because of the size of it, the ease to use by the masses and – of course – the impact it has on how we do business. Now everyone wants a piece of it and many are trying, but are they doing it the right way? Social media originally belonged to salons. Inside these social establishments the really interesting conversations took place. The news, the gossip, the tips – being in a salon was an inspiring place. Now these conversations have moved to Facebook, Google Plus and Twitter. So can salons regain this position? Of course they can. They must move into social media to reclaim what is rightfully theirs and extend the salon beyond the physical walls. But this move has to be based on added value – otherwise it’s just a nice attempt that will turn out to be a failure. Added value is hidden in convenience, information, great deals and content.

Content: When it comes to anything online, content is the keyword. If it is boring, people will only come once and never return. So providing content that is entertaining, inspiring or informative is the key to success.

The Wax Show UK is a new, joint venture by salon owners and dedicated waxers Andy Rouillard (Axiom Bodyworks) and Mat O’Marah (Waxing For Guys).
