COPPERCOAT PARTNERSHIP WITH CLIPPER ROUND THE YACHT RACE
T
he application of Coppercoat antifouling on the Clipper Round The World Yacht Race fleet has been described as a huge success by race officials after mid-race checks were carried out in Whitsundays, Australia. Coppercoat was appointed as the Clipper Race’s first ever Official Antifoul Partner after the long-lasting
anti-foul’s technology had impressed on the Clipper 68 training fleet. In previous years, the Clipper fleet has always been lifted from the water halfway through the race for antifoul reapplication. However, with a typical active lifespan of ten years or more, Coppercoat removes this need for a reapplication of antifoul which has a massive impact on the race logistics, reducing long-term costs and keeping maintenance time down.

the identification of other potential solutions,” commented Judith Grimwade, Cruising Association President. As the sailing season gets underway, the Cruising Association urges everyone to report incidents to them at lobsterpots@theCA.org.uk as well as to the RYA online reporting scheme at: www.rya.org.uk

An outdated collection of sheds has been demolished at the heart of a creekside village in Cornwall to make way for a purpose-built, low environmental impact HQ for multi-award-winning, global brand, Cockwells Modern & Classic Boatbuilding Ltd, which is at the technological forefront of specialist marine manufacture. Following record-breaking sales of its custom-built motor launches and luxury superyacht tenders in recent years, this redevelopment is designed to provide a solid platform for innovation in the development of new products and services, and stimulate the long-term growth of the business. WHAT’S NEW WITH ABYA? THE ASSOCIATION OF BROKERS AND YACHT AGENTS (ABYA) EXISTS TO PROMOTE THE HIGHEST STANDARDS OF PROFESSIONALISM AND EXPERT KNOWLEDGE IN THE FIELD OF YACHT SALES. ABYA HAS ALMOST 200 MEMBERS IN THE UK AND ABROAD, SPECIALISING IN NEW AND SECOND-HAND BOATS, FROM DAY BOATS TO LARGE YACHTS. DOES THE ABYA HAVE ANY EVENTS COMING UP IN APRIL? There is a Small Craft LPG Training Day for YDSA Surveyors on 18th April at YDSA head office in Petersfield. The aim of the course is to provide a guide to visual surveying and comment on the complete installation of a gas system on a vessel. The course outlines the design process for sizing: gas cylinder, regulator, pipework and ventilation. The course also covers who can work on gas systems and what is required by the RCD.
WHAT ARE ABYA’S PLANS FOR THEIR NEW TRAINING PROGRAMME AND HOW IS THIS PROGRESSING? ABYA is developing a training programme for yacht brokers, which will have at its core the two-day intensive course. The programme will be based on Continuous Professional Development, allowing brokers to track their own progress and development throughout their careers. SO, WHAT DOES THE TWO-DAY INTENSIVE COURSE ENTAIL AND HOW CAN MEMBERS GET INVOLVED? ABYA’s Yacht Brokerage Course is a two-day intensive course, that is highly beneficial as an introduction to professional brokerage for non-members as well as offering essential CPD training for existing Member Brokers seeking to maintain their professionalism and competitive edge. The speakers on the course are marine industry professionals in their specialist fields and provide topical and instructive lectures relating to

FINDING A BREXIT DEAL THAT WORKS

F
or many in the UK business community, the coming months will be crucial in ensuring that their interests and concerns are front and centre of the Government’s thinking as Ministers head for negotiations in Brussels. This imperative is no less important for the recreational boating sector, and we have already been working hard this year to ensure that the final Brexit deal works for boaters around the UK. In December 2017, the Prime Minister secured an agreement from other EU leaders to move talks away from the terms of the UK’s withdrawal and onto trade. Attention has now turned to what kind of long-term relationship the UK wants with the EU, and what the remaining member states might be willing to sign off. From our discussions with our members, three key issues have emerged as being at the forefront of boaters’ minds as we approach ‘Brexit Day’. These are: • The treatment of recreational craft as ‘Union goods’, allowing continuous free navigation around the waters of the EU • The way in which voyages on
WWW.TODAYS-BOAT.COM | 01795 509111|
recreational boats are treated under the new border control system introduced by the UK Government after Brexit • The ability of UK citizens who have RYA qualifications to travel freely to and from the EU for work – something currently undertaken by a significant proportion of the 19,507 RYA qualified instructors In conversations with officials in key Government Departments and MPs who have a significant boating and marine industry presence in their constituency, we have been highlighting the importance of the Government safeguarding the benefits which boaters enjoy under the current terms of the UK’s EU membership, and the inconvenience and economic damage which could be caused should these not be preserved beyond March 2019.
@TODAYS-BOAT |
TODAYSBOATMAGAZINE
We were pleased to see the Government recently commit to two measures in particular which will help UK boaters after Brexit. Firstly, we welcome the deal reached by the Prime Minister with the EU which guarantees the rights of UK citizens living in the EU after Brexit, and vice versa. This will bring significant re-assurance to RYA qualification holders based in our 249 training centres throughout the EU, as well as the many EU citizens who work for marine businesses in the UK. Secondly, the Immigration Minister, Brandon Lewis, has confirmed in writing to us that there will be no immigration controls on sea voyages between Ireland and Northern Ireland after Brexit, maintaining the
EXPERT’S VIEW : 17
integrity of the Common Travel Area and avoiding significant disruption to the many UK and Irish boaters who currently enjoy travelling freely between the two countries. These announcements provide a good foundation for our lobbying activities in 2018, but there is still much to do to safeguard the freedoms which recreational boaters currently enjoy beyond Brexit. Our five priorities are as follows: 1. Persuading the Government to negotiate an agreement that recreational craft which currently enjoy Union goods status should retain this status post-Brexit (regardless of whether they are kept in UK or EU waters) and have a means by which they can readily prove they have this status 2. Ensuring that UK recreational craft without Union goods status can continue to visit the EU after Brexit without being subject to the 18-month restriction on Temporary Admission procedures for relief on
customs duties and VAT, provided they do not change ownership. In this respect we believe they should be treated as personal possessions, not traded goods 3. Ensuring that any new border controls proposed by the Government do not require boaters to obtain prior permission before entering or leaving the UK, do not compromise navigational safety or restrict freedom of navigation, and that any proposals for visa controls take into account the nature of recreational boating tourism 4. Supporting the creation of a system enabling UK nationals entering the Schengen Area to stay for periods in excess of 90 days in 180 (the current time limit for non-EU nationals) 5. Pushing for the introduction of a scheme which allows UK citizens holding RYA qualifications to continue to be able to visit EU member states on business or for seasonal work relevant to those qualifications without having to obtain a visa Through our Brexit-related engagement and other ongoing
WWW.TODAYS-BOAT.COM | 01795 509111|
initiatives, such as ‘Push the Boat Out’, a significant number of MPs are already aware of the importance of the recreational boating sector to their constituencies and the UK as a whole. However, there is still more we can do to spread the word. Therefore, we are encouraging all our members and supporters to contact their local MP, once a date for the forthcoming Westminster Hall debate is confirmed, to encourage them to attend the debate and support us in highlighting to the Government throughout next year the importance of safeguarding the future of the recreational boating sector in the Brexit negotiations. Over the next 12 months, the RYA will continue to push Government to secure a Brexit deal that works for recreational boaters across the UK. In the meantime, readers can find out more about the issues we are working on at www.rya.org.uk/go/ currentaffairs

ased at the Rhoda Mary Shipyard on the bank of a river where so many fine wooden sailing ships were built, The Falmouth Pilot Cutter CIC is recreating a traditional environment where, the team hope, many projects of historic maritime importance will take place. For many years there has been a desire to resurrect a legendary Falmouth Pilot cutter and rekindle wooden shipbuilding in Cornwall. The team have chosen to faithfully recreate one of the longest-surviving and best-documented of the cutters, the Vincent, built in 1852 for the Vincent family of St Mawes. She worked successfully for 70 years until being retired in 1922, ending her days as a houseboat at Freshwater on the Percuil River. The vessel will be named Pellew in honour of the great Cornish maritime hero.

Luke Powell has faithfully recreated this vessel drawing plans using an original builders model found in St Mawes and given to Ralph Bird, Devoran Pilot gig binder, and his own experience building Scillonian Pilot cutters. Pellew will be used by the Falmouth Pilot Cutter CIC for sail training and chartering. The vessel will remain based in Truro and sail the seas, giving opportunities for apprenticeships in the traditional trades and seamanship associated with such a vessel. Once she is launched in 2019, The Falmouth Pilot Cutter CIC team will continue to train young people by expanding the yard to accommodate small maritime trade, like block making and sail making, as well as recreating another fine Cornish Vessel. The project is set up as a not-forprofit Community Interest Company,

and has been greatly supported by many people from the local community and farther afield. To name but a few: Artysea, Working Sail Ltd, Rhoda Mary Trust, Truro Council and Truro Harbour. As the team progress they hope to reach out to create a network of local businesses that will sponsor out apprentices and in turn benefit from the skill level that will come out of this project. ABOUT THE TEAM The team building the Falmouth Pilot Cutter include Luke, Jon, Shane, Clyde, Ned, Andy and Katie. After spending much of his youth sailing and exploring Greece, Luke Powell trained as a shipwright in Faversham, working on Thames Sailing Barges. He then brought his own boat which he restored in France

Back in Devon, then Cornwall, he built new boats for Butler & Co. In his spare time, he built his own traditional sailing yacht, Unity. Once the hull is faired and plugged, there are 26 runs of 65ft on each side to be caulked with 80kg of oakhum.

Luke took delivery of 2 61 ft trees at the yard on – one for the main mast and the other to be cut for a bowsprit, floor boards and bulwark planking. Another slightly smaller tree, 51ft, has gone off to be sawn up for the spars-boom, gaff and topmast. To get trees of this length from Gunners lake at the top of the Tamar a special lorry with a driver with a lot of patience and a police escort was required. At the moment, the deck structure is being laid and the team have finished planking. AN ICONIC INTERIOR FOR OYSTER 885 HILL HOUSE INTERIORS HAVE CREATED A SOPHISTICATED AND LAVISH INTERIOR FOR OYSTER YACHT’S BESPOKE 885 MODEL. WE HEAR FROM DESIGNERS AND FOUNDERS, HELEN BYGRAVES AND JENNY WEISS AS THEY SHARE DETAILS OF THE VENTURE.

aunching their multiaward-winning design practise over 20 years ago, Helen Bygraves and Jenny Weiss are the stylish force behind Hill House Interiors, a company swiftly becoming known for their sharp attention to detail and love of luxurious, innovative materials. Turning their talent to the world of luxury yachting, Helen and Jenny teamed up with Oyster, world renowned creators of iconic cruising yachts, to deliver an indulgent interior for the third ever 885 model. Launched at the Monaco Boat Show, the majestic 24 meter 885 is the largest in Oyster’s core range, and each yacht is bespoke, designed to meet the requirements of its owner exactly. The owner, a long standing Hill House client and avid sailor, wanted the epitome of the perfect sailing yacht, combined with the unique brand of magic the interior designers had brought to his private homes in The UK and abroad. Involved from the outset, the designers consulted on furnishings, finishes and even the final layout.
relaxed coffee table. The aqua hues of the upper deck flow seamlessly down to the lower living space, into the soft taupes and teals of the exquisite fabrics by Kravet and Armani. There are stunning lamps by Best and Lloyd, fixed on to the leather clad cabinetry with signature nailing detailing. Much thought has gone into the below deck space, which has been designed to incorporate a retractable sliding door. By day, the 2 cabins become one, allowing guests to enjoy the TV den and children to play on their Play Stations, while still absorbing the ambience of the living space. As night draws in, the lower cabin can be reverted back into a bedroom, screened off from the living area. Hill House encouraged Oyster to install their first ever lacquered kitchen. Fusing beauty and functionality, the kitchen incorporates the finest ecru and black lacquers, juxtaposed with the organic interior woodwork. The kitchen comes complete with a collection of fully integrated topof-the-range appliances.
Helen comments, “With this, our first ever superyacht project, we wanted to create the ultimate in nautical extravagance, offering true luxury and comfort, while at sea and in port.”
The client required crystal glasses and the highest quality crockery, fitting of a yacht of this stature, so Oyster and Hill House devised clever storage, to conceal and protect the precious items while at sea.
Drenched in Hill House glamour, elegance and quality, the upper deck, with soft furnishings upholstered in fabrics by Dedar, is an opulent arena for grand al fresco entertaining. The diverse lacquered customised table in the cockpit’s outdoor dining area can be used for formal dining for 8, or rapidly transformed into a more
Jenny explains, “It was imperative that in the kitchen and living spaces ample storage was a priority. We love to create something completely unique for each client, and are big advocators of bespoke cabinetry – investing extra into such essential feature pieces really does make a difference when it comes to the

overall aesthetic.” With splashes of ethereal muted amethyst, the master bedroom, one of five bedroom cabins on board, has a deluxe highly durable carpet by Sylka, in royal coloured dove. Designed to stimulate the senses, a tantalisingly tactile headboard is the focal point of the cabin, upholstered in an iridescent anthracite fabric by Zimmer and Rhode, framed with 2 fixed lamps, imported from the USA. The deeply luxurious bedding is by Heirloom, for added opulence. The master bathroom, like the kitchen, is lacquered with chrome detailing, another first for Oyster. Equal attention has been paid to each of the three sumptuous guest suites, one of which comes with a geometric circle print bedspread by Sacho, and another with statement fabrics by Hermes in zingy citrus. “We are immensely proud of this project”, reflects Helen. “The challenge for us was to install the lavish finishes we use in our superluxe interior schemes - bringing all the comfort and luxury of a Hill House designed luxury mansion to sea!” Jenny adds, “Of course, our aim is always to impress the client, and create something they feel comfortable living in. A lot of our business comes through personal recommendations from our established clients, which is a real testament to how hard the Hill House team works to get every detail right. A rewarding measure of our success is when we are brought back to do a client’s second, third or even fourth home – which was very much the case with this super yacht.” The owner is immensely happy with the yacht, and set sail for St Barts almost as soon as it was finished! www.hillhouseinteriors.com

hen Luxury Engineering was brought in to work on a 35m yacht moored in Italy, the requests were very clear. The client wanted a technology filled environment where he could hold meetings with business partners and entertain friends. Luxury Engineering selected a Creston system that could be controlled from both an iPad and Crestron remotes. The control interface included the ability to operate multiple zones, including six zones of satellite TV, Apple TV, a media server, 10 audio zones with AirPlay function, and a DolbyDigital multichannel sound system with a karaoke function. This function was the most difficult to integrate into the

overall system, as the client wanted each deck to be able to select its own composition. The integrator opted to transmit the AV streams through separate processors using a Crestron matrix system. For stable operation of the wireless microphones, additional transmitters were installed in technical hatches. The end result was an easily adaptable system that allows the client to scale and adjust based on the current needs – whether it’s watching one of the more than 600 movies that Luxury Engineering programmed into the media server on the main deck or in an individual cabin, hosting business presentations that can be viewed on one of the multiple plasma panels, or a karaoke competition.
