Biomedical informatics is now the key to understanding biology and medicine. As an avalanche of data and increasingly sophisticated technology change the way biomedical research is conducted, demand for researchers and health professionals trained in the field is rapidly increasing. The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, in partnership with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, offers a PhD Program and Graduate Certificate in Biomedical Informatics. Our faculty and students use computational methods to solve pressing health problems in clinical informatics, genomics, precision medicine, quality improvement, systems biology, patient safety, biostatistics, decision support and more. The Biomedical Informatics Graduate Program at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, offered in partnership with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, provides students a unique opportunity to learn and work at premier institutions within one of the nation’s largest combined medical campuses.

in Biomedical Informatics We provide exceptional training opportunities by combining data-centric courses, experiential learning and multidisciplinary mentoring in the context of a premier healthcare center. Our students are embedded in a broad umbrella of interdisciplinary quantitative programs in the areas of data science, systems biology and informatics.

PhD Program The four-year PhD program offers rigorous coursework that combines core courses and electives tailored to prepare students for their dissertation research in one of two tracks, either bioinformatics or clinical informatics. During the first year of study, all PhD students complete core courses in functional genomics, medical informatics, bioinformatics and data science. Mentored research rotations within the first year introduce students to research laboratories, faculty mentors and scientific methods. Students also attend seminars by local and invited experts. By the beginning of the second year, students identify a faculty mentor and laboratory to complete their dissertation research. Graduate Certificate The 19-credit Graduate Certificate program, open to graduate students as well as clinicians and professionals, features coursework and hands-on training opportunities. The curriculum consists of a seminar, four core courses and two electives. Students focus on current problems in bioinformatics or clinical informatics. The program trains clinicians and health professionals in the integration of clinical and analytical systems with clinical practice and research.
