LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
love of the ages
I
Congratulations Cincinnati Wedding Magazine
18 FOR THE
Here at CW, we are suckers for a beautiful love story. It could be the most epic proposal ever, or a tale of love over long distances, or the couple who’s been married more than 50, even 60, wonderful years. We adore Florence and Frank Stanek, featured on page 96, who were married in 1952 in front of 400 guests. Now 84 and 85, they are celebrating their 64th anniversary this summer. After all this time, they still remember their wedding day as the best day of their lives. When their granddaughter, Lauren Coben Dye, said “I do” last September, she carried the same crystal rosaries in her bouquet that Florence did back in 1952. You can see Lauren’s wedding in Local Love (page 47), along with the stories of 16 other local couples. We’ve filled the pages of this issue with trends, ideas, and the work of local vendors—from beautiful dresses with floral details to cakes and flowers that speak to four distinct art styles—to help you execute the day you’ve always envisioned. When you finally walk down the aisle, be sure to send us the photos. Your wedding is a monumental event—the most important day in a love story that will hopefully endure for 60-plus years, just like Florence’s and Frank’s.

dress the part Belle Bridal is designing gowns just for curvy brides.
» STACEY SPARKS-HUFF AND HER MOM, HENRIETTA SPARKS,
the region’s go-to gurus on curvy brides, are launching their own line of 25 gowns this summer—specially designed for sizes 14–32. “We took our best-selling gowns over the last four years and used those as our guidelines,” says Sparks-Huff, who co-owns Belle Bridal Boutique Curvy Couture with her mom. “We wanted to give girls of all sizes access to the styles they normally can’t go and try on at other places.” Called Belle Curvy Couture, the collection includes mermaid, trumpet, and fit-and-flare styles and will be available in-store as well as online at bellecurvycouture.com. The in-store experience includes a personalized pre-selection of three gowns, based on an interview with the bride. “Most curvy brides believe they need a ball gown or an A-line, and that’s not true,” says SparksHuff. “We pull things she normally wouldn’t pull for herself, and it ends up working really well.” Another perk of the new line? A blowout sale of current inventory hitting early summer. —ELIZABETH

take four to six months to arrive. Morgan Paul, manager of LUXEredux Bridal, says the most common sizes found at consignment stores are 8, 10, and 12. But if the dress was pre-worn, the previous owner likely had alterations to fit her body, which means a size 10 might fit more like a size 6. Where and How to Shop The least risky avenue is to shop in person at a boutique that specializes in consignment gowns. Shop owners can tell you the history of the dress (such as whether it’s pre-worn or a floor sample), and you can examine the dress for flaws. As for haggling? Don’t expect a used car–style negotiation. “Consignors are the ones who price their dresses, so it’s not necessarily up to us,” Paul says. “A lot of brides don’t know that, and it’s a conversation we definitely have to have in most of our appointments.” That said, some online consignment networks, like preownedwedding dresses.com, connect buyers with sellers directly to handle all negotiations and The dress of your dreams—with a deep discount. — E L I Z A B E T H M I L L E R W O O D purchasing agreements. you do pretty much anything else, you need to set a date, pick a venue for your ceremony and reception, and determine a general number of guests. These three things often need to happen in tandem, because your venue of choice will sometimes determine your guest capacity and narrow down your date options pretty quickly. Or vice versa. So you need to decide which is most important to you. Minimum 500-guest wedding? That limits your date choices. Emotionally attached to Krippendorf Lodge or French House? Those calendars fill up fast and the space will limit your guest count. And so on. Start by thinking of a general time frame and head count, and begin making some calls to the venues that strike your fancy. Once you have locations booked, then you can begin the fun stuff: dress shopping, cake tasting, bridesmaid casting, and flower selecting. These planning tasks will all fall into place once you have those big three decisions made. Bonus: You’ll end up with a dress that you love and that fits the venue. Because if you’re getting married at a park in July, then you probably don’t want to be wearing an 80-pound duchess satin ball gown that you impulsebought the day after you got engaged. People keep asking me what the “theme” of my wedding is. Should I have a theme?
I just got engaged, and I know that I want a traditional ceremony and reception, but I don’t know where to start. Help! — - DEER IN HEADLIGHTS
Dear Deer: Mrs. Know-It-All is so glad you asked. Because there is actually a pretty specific order of operations that, when stuck to, will make your life as a temporary wedding planner much simpler. Mrs. Know-It-All understands that when you first get en-

THEMED OUT
Dear All Out: The “theme” of your wedding is “weddings.” Your wedding is wedding-themed. Luckily, there’s a whole mess of stuff that goes along with the “wedding” theme (Flowers! Cake! A white dress!), so no one will confuse your nuptials with, say, the Calgary Stampede. If you must have a theme, and said theme handily presents itself, then by all means go with it. But don’t go nuts trying to manufacture one from nothing. You seriously have enough stuff to do (See above: Have you set a date yet?!). If you really want a theme and can’t think of one, just canvas some buddies for ideas, or consider the location or season of your wedding (“tasteful winter wonderland” is almost never a bad idea). Side note: Sometimes by “theme,”

well-meaning commenters actually mean “colors.” Just say, “My colors are blush and bashful” in the best Steel Magnolias voice you can muster. If they get it, then you’ll become best friends for life. If they don’t, then you’ll be no worse for the wear. They’ll just think you really like pink. We’re planning a destination wedding to a yet-to-be-determined tropical locale. How much should we program the weekend? Do people actually want a bunch of group activities? — O U T O F T O W N
Dear Town: This is a tricky one. People are traveling for your wedding, so you don’t want them twiddling their thumbs all weekend in the lead-up to the big event, or feeling like they don’t know how they should be spending their time. And you definitely don’t want them lurking around, asking you what to do while you’re trying to keep it all together. But you also don’t want to treat them like summer campers with a bythe-hour itinerary (“Friendship bracelet–making class at 11 in the caf!”). A good happy medium is this: Plan some non-mandatory evening events, when people probably want to socialize anyway. Reserve tables at a restaurant, hunt down the best dance party in town, and so forth. Then leave the days open for sleeping in, beaching, and more sleeping. If you’re feeling ambitious, pull together a list of suggested daytrips or excursions and let individuals and couples make their own daytime plans. Because it’s your wedding, but it’s their vacation. If you geek out over modern, understated design, Cancun’s Nizuc Resort & Spa is just the ticket. We know—Cancun seems like a destination better suited to a spring break bender than a romantic honeymoon, but thanks to Nizuc that’s not the case. The resort is sleek and chic, and it’s tucked away on its own private point just 10 minutes from Cancun’s airport. Nizuc’s 274 suites and villas have soaring ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows that give way to sea and garden views, and interiors that are awash in cool, calming neutrals. Though Nizuc occupies its own 29-acre point and affords views of and access to the placid turquoise sea, once you’ve checked into an Ocean View Junior Suite or a Master Suite and splashed around in your own private plunge pool, chances are the staff won’t see you again until checkout. In case you do feel drawn to explore the resort beyond your suite, don’t miss its excellent restaurants—a breezy beachfront lunch at the Peruvian-inspired Ni is an experience not to be missed, as are the Ik margaritas at Bar A-Kan—or a couple’s massage at the resort’s ESPA. nizuc.com ONE & ONLY PA LM ILL A, LOS CA BOS

Hurricane Odile in September 2014 and re-opened in April 2015 with a host of additions and improvements, which means this favorite vacation spot of George Clooney is better than ever. The resort’s Spanish-style rooms and suites are light-filled and spacious, featuring colorful textiles, bathrooms with pebble-floor showers, and private stone patios overlooking the manicured grounds and the Pacific. (Certain beachfront suites have their own blue-tiled plunge pools.) You’ll be welcomed with your own tequila-tasting amenity, which will whet your appetite for meals and drinks at One & Only’s topnotch restaurants and bars. A superb new Jean-George Vongerichten steakhouse, called SEARED, was added with the resort’s re-opening, and the adjacent Suviche serves up some of the most heavenly sushi we’ve ever had. With its breezy terrace, colorful tables, and internationally inspired menu, Agua by Larbi is a picture-perfect spot for a private tequila tasting, a sun-drenched breakfast, or a romantic dinner à deux overlooking the ocean. When you’re ready to relax, head to the newly renovated 22,000-square-foot spa for a body treatment or soul-soothing yoga class. For some aquatic exploring, sign up for a scuba or snorkeling excursion or, if your stay here is a total splurge, a private cruise around SUMME R
This resort is Pacific Mexico’s only AAA Five Diamond– rated all-inclusive resort, so you can indulge without the constant need for cash. The resort has 267 suites, which feature private terraces and balconies, ocean and pool views, and Balinese teak wood furniture. Contemporary Mexican design is complemented by a relaxing palette of cream, citrusy greens, and rich, warm wood. If you opt for a honeymoon here, come hungry: The resort is home to an astonishing four AAA Four Diamond–rated restaurants—Frida, Lucca, and Piaf— which serve up fine, traditional Mexican, Italian/Mediterranean, and French fare, respectively. You can lounge by the resort’s pool and enjoy countless frozen, blended drinks, or partake in one of the many active endeavors here—a guided bike ride through the resort’s neighboring residential neighborhood, golf on one of seven nearby championship courses, kite surfing and kayak tours on Banderas Bay, and yoga and other wellness classes at the resort’s fullservice spa. vallarta.grandvelas.com 201 6 /

The process for a courthouse wedding in Hamilton County starts much the same as for any other wedding: First, you need a marriage license. Round up $65, your governmentissued photo IDs, and head down (together!) to the Hamilton County Probate Court at 230 East Ninth Street. If you look blissfully in love, then the security guard will preemptively direct you to the 10th floor, where you can purchase your license. You’ll have to swear to some stuff (for example, that you’re not already married) and then sign on the dotted line. You’ll leave the office with two forms to give to your wedding officiant: a confirmation that you have been issued a license, and a form for the officiant to fill out and return after the ceremony. Once the officiant mails that form back to the court, then you’ll receive a certified copy of your marriage license in the mail. There is no blood test or waiting period in Hamilton County, but you do need to get married within 60 days or your license will expire. Visit our Bridal Buzz blog for more information. HEADS UP The office will also send you home with a “souvenir” marriage license. This is a fun thing to have, but it’s definitely not legally binding in any way.

MAKE IT OFFICIAL YOU’LL NEED TO FIND A JUDGE OR MAYOR TO PERFORM YOUR WEDDING CEREMONY AT THE COURTHOUSE. Most people consider this the most daunting part of any wedding, but there are “Duty Judges” for the Hamilton County Municipal Court who are responsible for conducting civil marriage ceremonies. You just need to make an appointment. You likely won’t want a big wedding party of bridesmaids and groomsmen trailing you all day. But you do need two witnesses. This is a great way to include close friends and family members in your ceremony. Call (513) 946-5200 to make arrangements with a Hamilton County Municipal Court Duty Judge

WE’VE SAID IT BEFORE and we’ll say it again: It’s your wedding, so you get to wear exactly what you want. But if you’re looking for advice, we’d suggest avoiding heavy, elaborate gowns and cathedral-length veils; you’ll probably end up feeling out of place. Also, courthouse weddings and sassy, short wedding dresses just look good together, no? This kind of affair is a great opportunity to showcase some great shoes or rock a Mia Farrow–style mod mini.

THE BIG PICTURE PLANNING A COURTHOUSE WEDDING means scaling way back on all those bridal bells and whistles: Don’t want to bother with a cake? No one will expect it. Not interested in flowers? Totally your call. But you might want to think about retaining the services of one traditional wedding day character: the
photographer. Because even though you’re having a low-key ceremony, you’ll still want to be able to look back and remember every minute. As for photo opps, downtown Cincinnati offers some great settings that will capture the perfect tone for your civil ceremony.

START WITH WHERE YOU GOT YOUR LICENSE; the entryway of the probate court at 230 East Ninth Street is modest in size but extravagant in design. It’s the perfect frame for a couples’ shot. And may we suggest CITY HALL? The Samuel Hannaford–designed building

resembles a large stone castle and will lend a grand tone to your photos.
PIATT PARK is a tried-and-true downtown photo setting, and for good reason: Its slim black arches perfectly frame the small urban terrace. Bonus: It’s lit up at night.

AFTER PARTY
HERE ARE SOME of our favorite downtown spots for the best celebration ever.
SOTTO This uberromantic underground restaurant has a perfect private room for your wedding dinner: The dimly lit brick space shimmers with chandeliers and candlelight and the food and service are impeccable.
ARNOLD’S Looking for a casual vibe? The oldest bar in Cincinnati (since 1861!) has an enclosed outdoor space and some killer spaghetti and meatballs. VIA VITE This slick Italian eatery sits right on Fountain Square and has a banquet room, piazza, and terrace. The Sgroppino cocktail, with grapefruit vodka, Madisono’s ruby red grapefruit sorbet, and Prosecco, should be your very first drink.
NADA This central business district restaurant feels like a little slice of Los Angeles. Book the upstairs space and finish out your big day with roasted poblano mac-and-cheese, crispy pork belly tacos, and all the tequila you can handle.

botham’s wedding weekend felt incredibly personal, a nod to each man’s heritage and the life they have built together. The rehearsal dinner at Bromwell’s Härth Lounge featured bourbon, moonshine, and barbecue to honor Bradley’s southern roots. At their wedding, the couple used Italian influences to celebrate Stephen’s background and their shared love of Italy. The grooms’chair covers read Avere, Tenere (to have, to hold), and they served custom cocktails named after their dog Nico and Portofino, where they were engaged. It poured throughout the ceremony at Knox Presbyterian Church, but the skies cleared as guests traveled by bus to the reception venue. As the sun peeked out from behind the clouds, Stephen’s dad says the whole group started singing, “Aquarius (Let the Sunshine In),” excitement building for a beautiful night spent under the stars. The reception was held at Mt. Echo Pavilion, about a mile from the grooms’ home. They wanted guests to leave feeling as if they had attended a fabulous, intimate dinner party. Dress was black-tie, and the couple encouraged guests to lounge and take in the stunning city view by lining the pavilion’s concrete benches with pillows featuring a custom monogram of their last initials. The space was designed to look like the cozy veranda of a lovely home; they wanted to bring an Italian villa to the Queen City.

After a dinner of plated Italian courses and dishes served family-style, Bradley had the idea to surprise guests with a fireworks display. The DJ asked them to gather for a group photo in front of the skyline, and that’s when the first firework lit up the sky. “It was exciting, and really set the tone for the rest of the night,” Stephen says. More than anything, Stephen and Bradley wanted their friends and family to feel the love they have for each other on their wedding day.“Getting engaged and planning a wedding was incredibly special,” Stephen says. “Once marriage equality passed, the fact that we could be married in our church, in our state, surrounded by our family and friends, was truly monumental.”
BRIGHT NIGHT Stephen and Bradley hosted an intimate Italian-inspired wedding overlooking the city, with monogrammed pillows on benches, lush flowers, and a surprise fireworks display to wow their guests.

would be big. In keeping with traditional Indian custom, the ceremony would last at least three days and consist of several events encompassing both sides of the family—not to mention all their friends. “I think we invited over 500 people,” Shefali says. “A lot of [Niral’s family] are from out of the country and out of town—he’s from Houston, Texas—so we wanted a place that had as many rooms as we needed, but also where you could just walk downstairs and have the venue be right there [they chose the Millennium Hotel]. It was really cool to have all these people we love and adore all under one roof, from family from overseas to childhood friends to college friends.” The festivities kicked off on Thursday night with a party in Shefali’s backyard, plus henna art for the women on her side of the family. The first of the religious ceremonies took place on Friday—pre-wedding prayers and rituals with relatives in the morning, followed by traditional Gujarati cuisine for lunch and a casual get-together that’s “like a folk dance party.” The official wedding ceremony on Saturday began with Niral’s procession on horseback through the streets of Cincinnati. After the formal exchanging of vows, guests enjoyed a reception that evening. The party never stopped. For Niral and Shefali, though, the most important part of the event was

met in 2002 at Ohio University where they lived on the same floor in a coed dormitory. Eva traveled to New Zealand with friends after graduation and 18 months later, Jamie flew there to visit her. As they say, the rest is history. When Eva and Jamie started planning their wedding, the longtime couple decided they wanted the celebration to reflect their laid-back sensibilities. Also, they wanted to give friends and family the gift of a weekend getaway. The whole shebang took place in Sunman, Indiana, on property that Eva’s best friend’s family owns. Guests stayed at Hollywood Casino in Lawrenceburg and caught a school bus to and from the site. Jamie, a college basketball official, organized a three-on-three basketball tournament the night of the rehearsal dinner and Mazunte catered a taco bar. The next day, they were married in front of a gorgeous lake, surrounded by fresh air and rich fall colors. The low-key, rustic vibe was carried throughout; the couple chose a lovely
naked cake and posed for photos with a vintage teal pickup truck. “We kept things pretty simple so that the beautiful scenery could speak for itself,” Eva says. The cocktail hour featured reggae music and cornhole, and the reception was held on the property in Old Hickory Barn. Eva and her friend Alex collaborated on several DIY projects to personalize the event and stay within budget, including making chalkboard signs, collecting bottles for the floral centerpieces, and designing invitations with Vistaprint. The couple relied on their friends and family to contribute their talents as well. Every vendor was someone Eva or Jamie knew personally or someone who had been personally referred. “It all came together; I trusted the vendors, and it was great,” Eva says. And—talk about relaxed—Eva and Jamie met their wedding photographer for the very first time on their wedding day. The night ended with cigars around a fire, and guests sent the couple off with sparklers and well wishes.

FINISHING TOUCH
looking back » FRANK STANEK, 85, AND FLORENCE MALINCHAK, 84, BETTER KNOWN AS “TOOTS AND FRANK,” WERE married on July 19, 1952, in Ashley, Pennsylvania. The couple is celebrating their 64th wedding anniversary this summer. They met when they were 14, but Florence’s father said Frank couldn’t come to the house until she was 16. He showed up on her 16th birthday with chocolates and crystal rosaries, and they’ve been together ever since. In their wedding four years later, there were four bridesmaids who carried red roses and a maid of honor who carried blue roses, and they all wore white gowns. Florence called it a snowball wedding. She carried a white pearl prayer book, and in her bouquet, the crystal rosaries that Frank gave her on her 16th birthday. — H A I L E Y M A L L E N D I C K
