Style Spotlight MEGGAN SULFSTED OF CAMARGO TRADING Looking for a wardrobe refresh this fall? Meggan Sulfsted, owner of Camargo Trading, talks you through tips and trends for the upcoming season. What blast from the past will be making a return in the fall? It’s the season of plaid! Add a dash of tartan or checkered print to your wardrobe this fall. Red and black tartan is the most popular, but I’ve seen orange and other bright colors as well. At Camargo, we have some adorable Drew tops that have just a simple plaid lining that are perfect. What wardrobe addition will wow the crowd this season? Fringe or fur! These accents allow you to add a touch of style to your fall look. You can find these on purses, coats, collars and cuffs… just to name a few. One piece you will discover at Trading that you won’t find anywhere else… The Fairchild Baldwin Bella necklace. This bold necklace instantly dresses up any outfit and is one of my personal favorites. What three fashion staples will you have in your fall wardrobe? A fabulous pair of denim. One that makes you feel good, is soft and fits just right. A classic navy sweater, not black, but blue! Lastly, a great pair of black flats. These will go with everything you wear this season. My own personal motto is always invest in your core wardrobe items. Quality goes a long way!

WHERE: Kenwood WHEN: TBD 2016 WHY: The luxury furniture store has chosen the newly revitalized address of The Kenwood Collection (formerly the failed Kenwood Towne Place project) to be the home of its only Signature Store in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. The 13,000-square-foot space will be the development’s first anchor tenant, sprawling over two levels. KIT AND ACE WHERE: Over-the-Rhine WHEN: June 2015 WHY: Co-founder JJ Wilson says the “technical cashmere” brand chose to open its third U.S. shop in OTR because the neighborhood shares a similar comeback story with the brand’s first location in Gastown, a historic Vancouver neighborhood. The shop is a rare corporate breed on Vine Street, but it earns points for integrating local artists’ work into the design of the shop. ELM & IRON WHERE: Over-the-Rhine WHEN: May 2015 WHY: Upon seeing the success of the flagship Columbus-based store, opened in 2012, owner Dan McClurg decided OTR’s hip Vine Street would be fertile soil—pulsing with plenty of foot traffic—to launch a second location. The vintage home decor collection immediately filled a much-needed niche in the neighborhood. BANG & OLUFSEN WHERE: downtown WHEN: May 2014 WHY: The Denmark-based consumer electronics tycoon chose Cincinnati’s buzzing central business district to hold down the fort for the brand’s Midwest presence (closest locations are in Chicago and Atlanta). To celebrate its 90th anniversary this year, the brand will be offering an exclusive rose gold product line. HOMAGE WHERE: Over-the-Rhine WHEN: Fall 2014 WHY: With two successful stores in Columbus, the vintage-inspired sports apparel company was drawn to Cincinnati for its third location because of the area’s rich architectural and cultural history. Plus, Cincinnati is a multi-team sports city with a strong diversity of fans, which is reflected in the store’s Cincinnati-specific merchandise.

be a curated online marketplace (shop madeincincinnati.com) showcasing products from about 30 local makers— and their stories. The site is set to launch on November 28, 2015, in conjunction with a one-day pop-up shop in Over-theRhine featuring products from the site. — E . M .W.

A SHINY NEW MIXEDuse development is primed to open in October 2015, smack in the middle of the ever-blending corridor connecting Dayton and Cincinnati. The 1.2 millionsquare-foot Liberty Center project will feature a slew of mainstream retailers (think Banana Republic, The Limited, White House Black Market, H&M) and a handful of fewer-andfarther between tenants like Simply Mac; Marbles the Brain Store, where you can get educational toys; and Kendra Scott, which sells fashionable women’s accessories. The property will also boast 240 luxury apartments, a 16-screen CineBistro theater with six “dine-in” screens, and 130 rooms in the European-inspired AC Hotel by Marriott, the first of its kind in Ohio. Most interesting, however, are the innovative parks and gathering grounds speckled throughout the property, featuring attractions like fountains, sculptures, a band shell, a rooftop garden, and a semiprivate community space for weddings and events. With a conscientious eye toward conservation, a sophisticated water management system will collect and reuse water runoff in underground retention basins beneath the parking garages. — E . M . W .

Men’s boutiques are having a moment, and no one strikes it hotter than this head-to-toe outfitter carrying all things manly: easy tees, sensible bow ties, casual blazers, suave spectacles, dashing kicks, and a smorgasbord of savvy home goods for beard and body. 1150 Vine St., (513) 721-1150, articlemenswear.com 2. IDLEWILD WOMAN

Owned by Anthony and Maria Graziani, the duo behind Article, this breezy-chic boutique simply makes a gal feel pretty. Understated tanks and flowy buttondowns pair comfortably with linen trousers, cotton

shorts, and on-trend denim. Top it off with an Americanmade rose-gold cuff and some vintage-styled shades. 1230 Vine St., (513) 3814059, idlewildwoman.com 3. MICA 12/V

One of the trailblazing pioneers in the OTR revival movement, this eight-yearold emporium remains a go-to source for homegrown goods and gifts, from artisan entertaining pieces to handmade jewelry. 1201 Vine St., (513) 421-3500, shopmica.com 4. CONTINUUM

Whether you’re looking for the perfect mantle piece or simply looking for inspiration, this vintage-meetsfarmhouse home decor depot checks every box—and every budget. From the pig placecard holders to the vintage phone booth, this tastefully curated collection is oozing with whimsy and nostalgia. 1326 Vine St., (513) 954-4217, elmandiron.com 7. KIT AND ACE

It’s no surprise that this impossibly soft and machinewashable cashmere brand comes from the same family

Practically the poster children of gourmet street food, these famed all-beef hot dogs can’t be bothered with homely accoutrements like ketchup and mustard. Rather, they prefer wasabi peas, queso fresco, arugula, poached eggs, Grippo’s, and the like. 1212 Vine St., (513) 421-2020, senatepub.com 9. THE EAGLE

Fried chicken might not sound impressive, but these

all-natural, free-range Amish farm birds regularly warrant a three-hour wait on a Friday night. A secret brine-andbreading method makes these crispy-spicy morsels addictively memorable, but it’s the spoonbread and mac and cheese that yield the happy unbuckling of a belt to make room. 1342 Vine St., (513) 802-5007, theeagleotr. com 10. This family-owned donut shop adds a refreshing downto-earth vibe to the see-andbe-seen mecca. Basic glazed varieties are just $1 a pop, but don’t hesitate to splurge on the bacon and maple or Fruity Pebble–topped versions.1332 Vine St., (513) 381-0903, holtmansdonut shop.com 12. KRUEGER’S TAVERN

While the house-ground burgers and sausages are

insatiably satisfying, it’s the magical rooftop patio that gives this pub a distinct claim to fame in OTR. Honorable mentions to the hefty selection of local canned beers and a lick-the-dish-clean hot beer cheese appetizer. 1211 Vine St., (513) 834-8670 13. QUAN HAPA

A rare anomaly on Vine Street, this Asian street food gem takes reservations. Do your best pronouncing the “exotic” menu items—can you say okonomiyaki three times fast?—and take those tightly packed communal tables with a grain of salt—er, rice. It’s all part of the experience. 1331 Vine St., (513) 421-7826, quanhapa.com

DRINK UP One serving of matcha contains 10 times the antioxidants found in a cup of regular green tea.

FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH Known as “the elixir of immortality,” matcha has powerful antiaging properties due to its antioxidant content.

MAD ABOUT MATCHA FROM ITS UNMATCHED NUTRITIONAL VALUE TO ITS BRAIN-BOOSTING, STRESS-REDUCING blend of nutrients, matcha is the hottest tea in town. Although matcha is new to the super food spotlight, its therapeutic powers have been known for centuries. Morgan Roosa, general manager of Essencha Tea House, the local spot to find high-quality matcha, says Buddhist monks have used it for hundreds of years to improve mental clarity before meditation. Today, tea novices and connoisseurs alike are drawn to its curative capabilities. “Matcha contains a high level of EGCG, an antioxidant proven to slow or halt the growth of cancer cells,” Roosa says, “and contains high levels of chlorophyll, a natural detoxifier.” Matcha also contains the amino acid L-Theanine, which produces an alert calm without java’s drag. — A M Y C O R S E R Matcha Sawa Latte with soy milk, $5.75 for a 12-ounce latte, Essencha Tea House, 3212 Madison Rd., Oakley, (513) 533-4832, essencha.com

ANOTHER PREHISTORIC diet staple that’s turning into a food trend: bone broth. It can be considered a hybrid of stock and broth, with its primary difference being the way it is prepared. Unlike regular broth, bone broths are boiled for a long period of time, often exceeding 24 hours. So why are people talking about it? Local chef and restaurant owner Suzy DeYoung explains, “Bones contain collagen and minerals that help build connective tissues, like calcium, potassium, and phosphorus.” When simmered for an extended period of time, the bones release these vitamins and minerals, and gelatin is produced from the collagenrich joints. Bone broth therefore has powerful healing properties to help boost your immune system, relieve joint and gut pain, and promote healthy hair and nail growth. DeYoung’s restaurant, La Soupe, offers a variety of organic soups and therapeutic broths that even those with health challenges can enjoy. Customers can also choose from various French entrées, sandwiches, pastas, and other pot-friendly dishes like the classic old-fashioned chicken noodle soup. — A . C . JAMES MARABLE THE MAN BEHIND ORIGINAL THOUGHT REQUIRED— HIS WARDROBE, WISE WORDS, AND A WELLSPRING OF LOCAL TALENT.

AFTER EARNING A MARKETING DEGREE FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI, DAYTON NATIVE JAMES MARABLE DEBUTED his T-shirt line aTYPICAL sOLE. “I had no retail experience,” Marable laughs, “besides shopping all the time.” But in 2010 the self-described “creative entrepreneur” quit his event-planning job and opened Original Thought Required in Over-the-Rhine. “It was an evolution,” Marable says. “I started meeting people [with] great ideas who didn’t know where to start.... Since then it’s become our niche, this focus on homegrown talent.” Being community-centric is what makes Original Thought Required so distinctive. In August, Marable was a finalist in the ArtWorks Big Pitch Competition, where he pitched his business and its impact on one of the city’s most creative corners. — H A N N A H G R U B B

JEROD THEOBALD IN 2011, JEROD THEOBALD FOUNDED FLOW—A SHOP FOR MEN JUST OVER THE RIVER IN COVINGTON. THE SHOP FEATURES CLOTHING AND ACCESSORIES FOR THE URBAN GENTLEMAN. Describe your personal style in three words. Simple. My own. Which brands or designers “get” you? PF Flyers, Brooklyn Circus, Blind Barber, Levi’s, Salt Optics...there are a few others that “get” me, but getting them can ruin a guy’s budget. What’s your morning mantra? Give thanks. Stay positive. Do you. What was your favorite book at 17? Now? I was a bit of a nerd, so I’ll say any novel we were assigned in school. Now? Anything by Tom Perrotta (or Colum McCann or Jonathan Tropper). I read a lot of books—just never on a tablet. I like to keep it old school. Describe a perfect workday. I do what I love and my customers are great people. Every workday is pretty much perfect. Describe your favorite play date. Experiencing something new with someone I enjoy spending time with. If my dog Ravi can tag along, even better. How do you unwind? Cooking, reading, rowing, and laughing. Just not all at the same time. If you’re going to treat yourself, what’s your favorite reward meal (a.k.a. calorie splurge)? Smucker’s peanut butter. Straight out the jar. If it has to be a meal, I’d say any type of pasta dish. I think the Italian side of my family would disown me if I said anything else. Name a person, place, or thing that inspires you. I can give you one example of each: anyone chasing their dreams, the Bay Area, and God. Is God a thing? I guess He’s all things, so I’ll go with that. Give a newbie a word of advice about your field. To have success as a small business owner, you can’t focus solely on sales. You need to focus on people. Sales keep your doors open, but it’s the relationships that will keep you going. Flow, 5 W. Pike St., Covington, (859) 2913569, gentlemanflow.com

AMY FESSLER AMY FESSLER IS THE OWNER OF SOHO BOUTIQUE, A WOMEN’S CLOTHING SHOP IN HYDE PARK, AND THE SPOTTED GOOSE, A CHILDREN’S CLOTHING BOUTIQUE IN NEIGHBORING OAKLEY. Describe your personal style in three words. Simple. Understated. Black. Cream is the only “color” you will see me in. Which brands or designers “get” you? Some of my favorites are Vanessa Bruno, Alice and Olivia, DL1961 Denim, Valentino, Acne, and for shoes I love Loeffler Randall and Manolo Blahnik. What’s your morning mantra? Get up and get going! There is no time like the present. What was your favorite book at 17? Now? The Catcher in the Rye was my favorite book for a long time. It was the first “adult book” I read my freshman year of high school. Three years ago I moved on to something much more uplifting, The Nuts: Bedtime at the Nut House. I read this with my kids before bed and we all sing, “We’re nuts! We’re nuts! We’re nuts!” Describe a perfect workday. Breakfast with my husband and kids, dance party with my kids, coffee, work, coffee, coffee, coffee! I like to start the day with coffee, good music, and laughing with my family. A perfect day is one where I can spend time at both of my stores, The Spotted Goose and Soho Boutique. Describe your favorite play date. I love all play dates! If my kids are smiling and happy then I am smiling and happy. We can have fun anywhere. We recently visited Smale Park and had a wonderful time! How do you unwind? I drink wine. I try to exercise when I can but let’s just say there is much room for improvement in that department. If you’re going to treat yourself, what’s your favorite reward meal (a.k.a. calorie splurge)? Hamburger and French fries. Name a person, place, or thing that inspires you. My husband inspires me every day. He continues to seek and find the good in people. He is generous and always gives people a second chance. I try to be more like him. Give a newbie a word of advice about your field. AZHAND SHOKOHI AZHAND SHOKOHI ESTABLISHED AZHAND SHOKOHI BRAND, A HIGH-END PERSIAN-INSPIRED FASHION LABEL, IN 2010. BRAND OFFERINGS INCLUDE WOMEN’S LUXURY WEAR AND FASHION JEWELRY AS WELL AS BRIDAL AND GOLF LINES. Describe your personal style in three words. Chic, classy, and elegant. Which brands or designers “get” you? I have many favorite designers including Alexander McQueen, Elie Saab, Oscar de la Renta, and Marchesa. I also like Ralph Lauren. What’s your morning mantra? After I make sure that our cats and dog are fed and taken care of, I prepare my coffee and start the workday by checking e-mails and social media.

What was your favorite book at 17? Now? I’m not a big book reader because I did enough of that in high school and college. The only “storybook” I have ever read is Désirée when I was 13 years old. My sister insisted. I loved it and I remember every moment of it, including the music I listened to while I was reading it. Describe a perfect workday. Work is never perfect. Of course, the best part about my work is that it doesn’t feel like work since I happen to love what I do every day. A great day at work is when I accomplish more than what I thought I would and also receive e-mails from unexpected sources. Describe your favorite play date. There are very few play dates. I love when my husband spends the day cooking a savory meal for us at home. How do you unwind? Jazz is my music of choice—I listen to it throughout the day. I also

love old movies. As often as possible, I try to watch old movies that inspire me either with their fashion, music, or just colors. I love “Technicolor.” If you’re going to treat yourself, what’s your favorite reward meal (a.k.a. calorie splurge)? Caramel coffee at Starbucks, venti, triple extra shots and extra caramel. Name a person, place, or thing that inspires you. As a designer I am always inspired by the colors, creativity, and style of my Persian heritage. My favorite actress is Marilyn Monroe. I love her charm, beauty, and poise. Give a newbie a word of advice about your field. In the fashion industry you must work hard and expect nothing in return. If you think you are better than others you will eventually fail. Azhand Shokohi, azhandshokohi.com

in my life. I give thanks to my own family and my Atelier family. It starts my day on a beautiful note.

A VETERAN OF THE FASHION AND DESIGN WORLD, ARLENE ARANZAMENDEZ OPENED ATELIER—A BOUTIQUE SPECIALIZING IN HANDMADE STATEMENT JEWELRY AND UNIQUE ACCESSORIES—IN 2014.

What was your favorite book at 17? Now? I’ve always read mostly nonfiction books (especially topics including psychology, entrepreneurialism, and Buddhism). The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell is one of my favorites. It’s easier to follow the advice of authors who lead by example.

Describe your personal style in three words. Artistic, eclectic, bold.

Describe a perfect workday. I’m fortunate to do what I love: create beautiful statement pieces and curate designer clothing for those who love fashion as much as I do, day in and day out. Every day is a perfect workday!

Which brands or designers “get” you? I especially love Alexis Bittar, but also gravitate toward Peter Pilotto, Karl Lagerfeld, Mary Katrantzou, Yoanna Baraschi, and Kathrin Kirchoff. What’s your morning mantra? I love the quote from Meister Eckhart: “If the only prayer you said in your whole life was, ‘thank you,’ that would suffice.” My morning mantra is to practice a five-minute gratitude prayer-meditation. I count my blessings and acknowledge everything that I have been given

Describe your favorite play date. Going to the symphony or opera with my husband and meeting up with friends later for light appetizers and a nightcap. How do you unwind? I’m pretty low-key to begin with; a glass of wine, a good movie, and a quiet night in often does the trick.

If you’re going to treat yourself, what’s your favorite reward meal (a.k.a. calorie splurge)? Death by chocolate! Name a person, place, or thing that inspires you. Alexis Bittar used Lucite and semi-precious stones and metals in much of his design and began by selling handmade pieces on the streets of SoHo. Now retail giants like Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue carry his line. As a longtime entrepreneur, his story really inspires me and resonates with me, showing all artists and designers that you can have the best of both worlds (passion for art and career-driven success). Give a newbie a word of advice about your field. Always follow your passion and learn to take constructive criticism, especially from those who have more experience in your field than you. Describe your personal style in three words. Past. Present. Future. Which brands or designers “get” you? Issey Miyake, Vivienne Westwood, Raf Simons, Comme des Garcons. What’s your morning mantra? The successful man does everything the unsuccessful man doesn’t. I’m in the position to make a difference. Now get up. What was your favorite book at 17? Now? I didn’t read much in my youth (a deep regret). Now I’m making up for it. I just finished a metaphysical series by Sophia Stewart called The Third Eye. How do you unwind? Meditation. Gym. Q&A WITH A TAILOR

FIVE STYLE STEPS: LOOKING PULLED TOGETHER

Sue Kuo has been tucking seams and hemming cuffs at her Montgomery shop, Sue’s Creations, since 1990—and the longtime tailor-designer knows proper fit is everything. Here, she shares her tips on suiting. —BAIHLEY GRANDISON

Slept through your alarm again? At least you’ll look the part of the well-organized worker with these snappy accessories.

1. HAMILTON WATCH This arm candy is tough but sleek. $695, Richter and Phillips, richter phillips.com

How much time should men allow to get their suit or tuxedo tailored? Two weeks? Two months? Having more time, of course, is better. Two weeks is usually OK, and I can—if I have to—get [a suit] done in a week, but I’d say a month is a good amount of time.

“Men back in the 1960s, they had a shirt and tie no matter what. So for me it’s a respect for my profession. And it’s a way for some of the boys to look up to someone who dresses up every day.”

3. PRINTS ON PRINTS ON PRINTS Major names—Miu Miu, Coach, Rodarte— paired plaid with paisley, stripes over houndstooth, and multiple floral types in their fall collections, so we’ll follow the leader on this one.

4. MAXED OUT BOHO Nay. Even Ralph Lauren gave this a try, but all we see is bag-lady.

How do you determine the proper pant length? Usually men’s shoes have a bit of a heel. I usually hem to about 1 to 1½ inches from the bottom of their shoe. It depends, too, on the break [where the pant “bends” when it hits the top of the front of the shoe.] Some men are slimmer, so they don’t want much of a break—for them, [I do] a slightly higher hem that’s a bit more fitted. [It doesn’t hurt] to have the tailor keep the extra fabric tucked under the hem, rather than cut it off—you can always trim, but you can’t put fabric back. What about shirts? Fixing the sleeve length is most common, and taking in the back to make the shirt a bit more fitted. [A good tailor] will take in the extra inches, instead of just chop them off, so just in case, you’ll have something to work with in the future. As you know, some people gain weight, some people lose it; I like to be able to make adjustments for them in the future if they need it.
