WELCOME TO THE 2014 EDITION of the Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce Membership Directory and Business Resource Guide. We are pleased to again partner with Cincinnati Magazine and Anderson Township government to deliver this valuable and informative community publication. For over 40 years the Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce has supported the businesses and residents of Anderson Township and more recently the businesses and residents of Newtown, Mt. Washington and western Clermont County. We have seen many changes in that time. Economic development continues to bring new businesses to the area including a redevelopment of the former River Downs property, now known as Belterra Park Gaming & Entertainment Center. This $300 million investment in our community will produce one of the country’s most beautiful racinos and bring 700 new jobs to the area. In addition, Anderson has seen several automotive-related businesses find homes in the heart of the township. In the coming months, several new restaurants will add to the area’s dining-out opportunities. Mercy Hospital has completed development of its parking lot expansion and will soon begin work on its new tower to accommodate 200 private rooms. The Chamber continues to evolve and to keep up with changing technology to better communicate with its members. We have added an online training offering, through our partner Coggno, that allows anyone, anywhere to learn about business practices. Click the “Online Training” tab on the Chamber website. The Chamber’s social media presence continues to grow with each ‘Like’ and ‘Follow’ it receives. Neighborhood Business Districts

he Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Hamilton County Sheriffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s OfďŹ ce, Anderson Township Government and the Anderson Township Fire Department, initiated the Neighborhood Business District (NBD) program in 2005. The NBD concept allows businesses to leverage multiple ways for potential growth, to protect their businesses, and to market themselves in the Anderson area. NBD meetings are periodically held in eight locations in Greater Anderson. Businesses in the Village of Newtown have formed a group through the NBD program, and additional connections in Mt. Washington have been made. The goals of each NBD are different and speciďŹ c to the needs of the businesses in that particular area. 2013 and 2014 The United States Medicare program awards Mt. Washington Care Center a prestigious Five Star Quality Rating! The Five-Star Quality Rating System was created to help consumers, their families, and caregivers compare nursing homes more easily and help identify areas about which you may want to ask questions. This rating system is based on continued efforts as a result of the Omnibus Reconciliation Act of 1987 (OBRA '87), a nursing home reform law, and more recent quality improvement campaigns such as the Advancing Excellence in America's Nursing Homes, a coalition of consumers, health care providers, and nursing home professionals.

Nursing home ratings are taken from the following three sources of data:

conservative budgeting, thoughtful action and citizen involvement, Anderson Township has redefined itself in the last few decades. In recent years this suburban community has added many quality of life programs, updated infrastructure (including an extensive network of hike and bike trails) and initiated a community improvement program that has beautified many thoroughfares in the community. This community of approximately 45,000 residents enjoys a superior level of government-sponsored amenities, for a relatively low tax rate. These facts and more have contributed to its high ratings as a “most livable” suburban community in Cincinnati. New residents moving into Anderson Township often comment about the efficiency of local government and its responsiveness to its citizenry. Operating under the “Limited Home Rule” form of township government, Anderson has carefully leveraged its assets since 2000 to create an infusion of more than $400 million in public and private investments in its commercial areas. This effort has created better safety, recreation and public services for residents. Despite economic downturns in recent years, the township remains in sound financial shape, continuing to maintain the highest bond rating from Moody’s Investors Service. Tax Increment Financing districts provide funding for capital and infrastructure improvements that benefit residents and encourage economic development, increasing the township’s overall tax base. In the past 15 years Anderson Township has worked to create connections in the community through its network of hike and bike trails known as Anderson Trails. It has worked to develop a community center and with that an extensive array of community activities that draw people together. (See sidebar.) The centerpiece of the Anderson Trails program is the Five Mile Trail, a 2.5-mile

hilly trail that takes walkers and bicyclists through pristine woods and natural settings. The Anderson Trails program has helped the community retrofit its older neighborhoods that did not have sidewalks and has helped the community become more walker-friendly. With the intention of providing a community center that would be easily identifiable with Anderson, the township government built the Anderson Center-Anderson Lake-Anderson Center Station campus on Five Mile Road. The centerpiece on the campus is the multipurpose Anderson Center, a venue that hosts not only government offices, but serves as a venue for theater, the arts, community and family gatherings. Beautiful Anderson Lake is a perfect companion for Anderson Center, providing a natural setting for weddings and special events, and a great spot for Party on the Plaza, a signature musical event series at Anderson Center in the summer. As the location for the METRO park and ride in Anderson Township, Anderson Center Station also doubles as the home of the Anderson Farmers’ Market, a popular spring and summer gathering place on Saturdays. Anderson Township is Ohio’s first Greenspace community. Recognizing that after an intense period of growth in the 1980s many green areas in Anderson could be totally gobbled up by development, the township initiated a publicly supported Greenspace program that protects more than 700 acres of property in its natural state. The Greenspace program continues as a point of community pride and serves as a model for other Ohio townships. With high quality public services including fire, rescue and the sheriff’s department, a reputation for excellent public works efforts (including quick snow removal on the streets), and a progressive planning staff as well as a variety of opportunities for citizen involvement, Anderson Township continues its efforts to build a comprehensive community that supports a high quality of life for all.

Anderson Township Park District’s Juilfs Park just received a brand-new playground, and plans are underway for a new waterplay area. The new playground features a farm theme, complete with a silo, windmill and a wagon with hay. Sports fields, tennis courts, basketball courts and picnic shelters provide activities for all members of the family. Veteran’s Memorial Park in Union Township is popular with residents for its fitness trail, fishing pond, well-equipped playground and ball fields. Special events honoring veterans are frequently held at the park. The award-winning Anderson Trails program has facilitated the construction of more than 15 miles of sidewalks and trails. Anderson also completed a 1.5-mile section of the Ohio River Trail, which connects Anderson Township with New Richmond to the east and the City of Cincinnati to the west.

schools/ education FOREST HILLS SCHOOLS Without question, one major reason why so many residents choose Anderson Township as their home is the presence of the Forest Hills Local School District. This public school district enjoys a reputation for excellence in its diverse programs and nine outstanding schools. One of the district’s themes, “Success for All Students,” drives the commitment to quality education for this district of more than 7,500 students. Forest Hills consistently ranks among the highest-performing public school districts in the state based on its State Report Card results. The district’s performance index score, as measured by the report card, places Forest Hills in the top 5 percent of districts in Ohio. (Performance index is the weighted average of a school or district’s students’ score.) Additionally, Forest Hills consistently outperforms the national ACT and SAT average scores. Known as a district with a history of responsible fiscal planning, Forest Hills works hard to keep its administrative costs lower than all other districts in Hamilton County and to consistently remain in the lower third in the county when it comes to expenditure per pupil. The district’s efficiency was confirmed by the Ohio Smart Schools report, conducted by Knowledge Works Foundation for the purpose of determining where schools could save money without impacting classrooms. This independent report found Forest Hills to be operationally the most efficient district in Hamilton County. Their findings show zero percent cost-saving opportunities in central administration, food services and maintenance. ty. Preschool programs are housed within two of the elementary buildings, Mercer and Summit. All six schools emphasize personalized and individualized learning. Nagel Middle School is identiﬁed as a National and State School to Watch. It offers an interdisciplinary team teaching approach for grades seven and eight. The school’s approximately 1,200 students are organized into smaller-size groups of about 125 students per team, providing a friendly and personal approach. Middle-school students at Nagel have numerous opportunities to enjoy an extensive array of sports and other extracurricular activities in this state-of-the-art facility. Anderson and Turpin high schools have both received Blue Ribbon School designation. They serve students in grades nine through 12, with a combined attendance of about 2,500. A wide variety of curriculum is available at both high schools including 22 AP courses and dual-credit opportunities. Coming in the fall of 2014–2015, high school and middle school students will have the opportunity to pursue a new area of learning with the introduction of Mandarin Chinese. Forest Hill’s high school students also can choose from a generous selection of extracurricular and cocurricular activities, all provided by an engaged, professional staff. Seventy-seven percent of Forest Hills teachers hold a master’s degree or higher. About 96 percent of Forest Hills graduates continue their education at twoand four-year institutions. Guardian Angels Guardian Angels is a school that stands out in the community as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. In 2013 the school, along with GA science teacher Michelle Gallagher, received a 2013 Governor’s Thomas Edison Award for Excellence in STEM Education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math). Guardian Angels is also dedicated to incorporating the newest technology so students are better prepared to enter high school. The 1:1 tablet program begins in sixth grade, when each student is given his own tablet to use. Music, art, physical education and Spanish are also part of the education students receive at Guardian Angels beginning at the kindergarten level. All of these aspects allow Guardian Angels to engage families in the learning process, challenge students in the classroom and help them succeed in the future.

Archbishop McNicholas High School McNick is going digital in a bold way. The one-to-one tablet program not only embraces today’s focus on technology, but it enables students to have everything they need for school on one device. In February, students participated in Digital Citizenship Day, a program that taught students how to navigate their digital world responsi-

bly. The event was the ﬁrst of its kind in Greater Cincinnati. Academics are strong at McNicholas—the science department, to name one success story, has won the Governor’s Thomas Edison Award for Excellence in STEM Education and Student Research for 25 years running. BELTERRA TOPS THE LIST OF RECENT NEW DEVELOPMENT

THE RACINO IS COMING TO TOWN. That’s the big development news this spring for the Anderson area as the $300 million Belterra Park Gaming & Entertainment Center opens in May at the site where historic River Downs once stood. For some time, the Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce and Anderson Township ofﬁcials have referred to the Kellogg Avenue corridor, anchored by Coney Island and Riverbend, as its entertainment district. The district’s distinctively seasonal quality— lots of warm weather fun—left residents and visitors with a gap during cooler months. Belterra Park ﬁ lls that gap with its year-round operation. The gaming and entertainment center will be open 24/7, 365 days a year, and will feature 1,500 video lottery terminals and six restaurants. The thoroughbred racing tradition, dating to 1925 on the site, will continue with 100 live racing dates from May 8 through October 19. “It’s a big boost in the arm to the riverfront area that’s been dominated by Riverbend and Coney Island,” says Eric Miller, executive director of the Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce. “It’s nice to

have a rejuvenated piece of the entertainment district down there.” Belterra Park will support 700 permanent jobs with payroll topping $23 million. The racino is one of seven authorized for Ohio racetracks, which will complement the four full-service casinos in the state’s major cities. Competition in the gaming world is suddenly getting stiff in the Tri-state and throughout Ohio. But Kevin Kaufman, Belterra Park general manager, says his parent company, Pinnacle Entertainment, Inc., which operates 14 casinos, believes the larger eastern Cincinnati neighborhood is underserved. “We’re the only one on the southeast corner of Cincinnati. We think if we build a special place, we will do very well with our guests,” he says. “Location is very important, and right off I-275 is perfect. We believe we can be the driver in the entertainment district.” “You would think this would be a natural for those who go to Horseshoe Casino to play slots. Now they don’t have to worry about driving downtown,” Miller notes. “To have something closer for Mason, Milford, Loveland—the whole east side—should be a draw for

the facility.” So far the Belterra Park development has provided 350 construction jobs with the demolition of the River Downs site and the construction of a new 1-mile dirt track and a 7/8-mile turf track (Ohio’s only one), along with a new grandstand, stables and paddock area. Kaufman said the facility has a “low proﬁ le,” designed to blend into the rolling hills along the Ohio River Valley. “We are spending a lot on landscaping. It’s called Belterra Park, and we want it to look like a park setting.” The gaming and entertainment center’s distinct restaurants include a buffet with seven cooking stations, an upscale classic Italian steak house with a dining terrace overlooking the track (Favorites Steak & Pasta) and a massive sports bar with 50 big screens and 100 custom beers (Stadium). There is also a quick-serve burger restaurant, a sandwich/coffee shop and full-service catering. The restaurants provide new dining alternatives along Kellogg Avenue for those who may also be attending events at Riverbend and Coney Island. “We are really focusing on our food and beverage offerings,” Kaufman says. “This is a great opportunity to bring some dynamic restaurants to this area.” Kaufman also believes the facility will generate other development. Indeed, Pinnacle’s phase-two plan calls for a hotel on the site. “We have had people call about possibilities, because we do own excess land,” Kaufman says. “This should drive some retail development and perhaps other eateries.” “We foresee that housing might go in as a result of Belterra Park,” says Steve Sievers, Anderson Township assistant administrator for Operations. “Year-round activity has always been the goal in the township’s riverfront plan. This is

certainly the key to that plan, and we are very excited.” Sievers notes that increased revenue derived from property taxes can be immediately put into developing the township’s master plan for the 6-mile township riverfront. The centerpiece of the plan is an extended river walk, but also includes studies on flood control, hillside stability and zoning that encourage a mixture of uses. “It’s not too often you develop a master plan, then have a catalyst to immediately be able to implement it,” Sievers says. “We hope to grow that area, especially to finish the river walk.” The other upcoming major investment in the Anderson area is Mercy Health’s planned expansion of Mercy Health - Anderson Hospital. Plans call for a five-story tower with 160,000 square feet of added space that will allow for more than 90 new private patient rooms. While parking lot work and site preparation is underway to make room for the tower, a groundbreaking date has not been released. “It’s clear hospitals consider it important to expand into Cincinnati’s eastern suburbs,” Miller says. “In recent years we’ve also seen office buildings from TriHealth and The Christ Hospital.” Overall, Anderson officials say the region continues to experience a robust development in restaurants and other retail services along the Beechmont corridor. “We have a pace of redevelopment on Beechmont that we haven’t seen in quite a while,” Sievers adds. “Properties are really being turned over, a trend that started late in 2012.” Among the exciting new restaurant additions announced for this year will be a second location for Arthur’s, the long time Hyde Park eatery, a new Dewey’s Pizza and Hot Head Burritos.
