Deerfield Township Board of Trustees
Enjoying Summer in Our Great Parks!
All of us here in Deerfield Township take great pride in our outstanding parks and superior recreation programs. They make our community different from others, creating great spaces for families to gather and enjoy time together outdoors. On behalf of the Board of Trustees and our entire management team, we look forward to spending another summer of family-friendly fun and frivolity with all of you in our local parks.
We are taking steps to improve all of our parks. For example, we have completed an ambitious series of improvements at Kingswood, the Township’s premier park. You will now find a state-of-the-art Ninja course there for ages 13 and up. We have added two playground areas, one for children 1–4 years old and a second for ages 5–12. There is also a new Activities Center. What had once been a park maintenance building has been transformed into an attractive space for Township and community programs and activities. Bench swings and picnic tables have been installed, and new landscaping completes the picture. Many of you joined us in April for an official ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the opening of these new amenities, and many more of you have begun putting them to good use.
Returning in 2023 are two popular fi ne arts events. We are once again partnering with the Arts Alliance to bring the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company back to Deerfield on July 20. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs to Cottell Park and enjoy a family friendly performance of one of the Bard’s greatest works, The
Comedy of Errors. On August 1, the Cincinnati POPS Orchestra returns to Cottell for another rousing performance under the summer stars. Don’t miss your chance to see Conductor John Morris Russell lead one of the premier orchestras in the world right here in Deerfield!
Once again, the POPS performance will be the highlight of a concert series known as the Sounds of Deerfield. A number of musical groups will perform at our parks in the coming months including: the Comet Bluegrass All Stars, Eagles Project, Cincinnati Brass Band, and Faux Frenchmen. This popular and diverse lineup shows that Deerfield Township is your home for great outdoor live music throughout the entire summer. Our recreation team has also put together an ambitious calendar of classes and activities for the upcoming year. The Township will once again host its popular summer camps and arts programming. There will also be a number of adult enrichment programs as well. The Deerfield Farmers’ Market has resumed its weekly schedule, and we will once again host outdoor fitness classes and education seminars. A complete list of upcoming events and activities can be found at: https://deerfieldoh. myrec.com
In short, Deerfield Township continues to be a wonderful place to spend time with family and friends in the great outdoors. Learn about nature. Watch your children play outside. Take the dog for a walk. Listen to some wonderful music. Participate in a fitness class. Or, just breathe and enjoy a nice sunset. You can do it all, right here in our hometown. Join us!

City of Mason Campus Safety Team
The Mason Campus Safety Team initiative was developed to improve safety and advance the partnership between the City, Mason City Schools, business partners, and the community. The Campus Safety initiative continues to serve as a leading model for communities and safety agencies throughout the country. The Team is made of individuals within the Police and Fire Departments. Through this program, additional training, programs, and resources strengthen the relationship between the City and partners as well as leverages Mason’s commitment to the community.
Throughout the school year, the Campus Safety Team interacts with children in the schools while working collaboratively with teachers and mental health professionals. Through a successful mentoring program, the Team focuses on building trusting, lasting relationships with students and adding positivity in students life.
Mason’s Campus Safety Team also collaborates with school staff to practice safety drills and how to safely navigate an emergency. The Team evaluates school emergencies that have occurred around the country to assist in being proficient in the event of an emergency. Following drills, Campus Safety reviews each incident with school staff and assesses the need for improvements.
GOOD CHOICE TICKET
The Good Choice Ticket program engages youth in the community and improves police and community relationships with children and teenagers in the City. When a police officer observes a child making a good choice, they acknowledge this positive behavior by issuing a Good Choice Ticket. Children who receive a Good Choice Ticket can redeem it for a free treat or item from local participating businesses and organizations. This program runs annually June through August, when school is not in session. Mason’s Good Choice Ticket program leverages Mason’s commitment to the community while building a culture of wellness.
In addition, the Campus Safety Team serves as a resource for safety training needs throughout the community. The following training programs are provided free of charge and focus on preventative and preparedness actions.
THREAT ASSESSMENT
The Campus Safety Team will visit your location and work collaboratively with you to identify, evaluate, and address potential safety and security threats related to your facility and operations. Some areas that the Team can help evaluate include assessment of site security, financial procedures, and opening and closing routines.
DE-ESCALATION TRAINING
This training offers tips and techniques through verbal and non-verbal de-escalation strategies. De-escalation training provides individuals with the tools to calmly deal with people who are experiencing mental and emotional crisis. Members of the Campus Safety Team will coach your staff on how to use some of the same skills they’ve learned as part of their police de-escalation training to respond to an emotionally heightened situation.
WOMEN’S SELF-DEFENSE PROTECT TRAINING
This women’s self-defense class is intended to educate and empower you by improving your situational awareness, helping you predict, identify, and avoid situations where harmful intent may be present. The focus of the course is on understanding and adopting personal safety habits that will
harden you as a target, and prevent a potential predator. This hands-on class will provide you some basic self-defense moves for when/where avoidance isn’t possible.
ACTIVE ASSAILANT WORKSHOP
Active shooter training is one of several proactive steps organizations can take to prepare employees and managers to respond appropriately to an active shooter or mass casualty incident. While the likelihood of an active shooter event is rare, all employees should know how to recognize the signs of potential violence and what their role is during an active shooter situation. Active shooter training strengthens and reinforces an organization’s emergency action plan and can help reduce the risk of an incident occurring. This Campus Safety Workshop includes an active assailant threat analysis of your facility and operations combined with a training session for your staff to learn strategies for preparing and responding to an active assailant incident.
STOP THE BLEED
Stop the Bleed training is a program that teaches tourniquet use and how to prevent substantial blood loss from injuries. Participants will learn personal safety regarding self-assessment of injuries and how to temporarily treat severe bleeding.
CPR/AED TRAINING
CPR training provides the knowledge, skills, and confidence to stay calm in a medical emergency and potentially save a person’s life. The City of Mason Fire Department offers cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) training on the first Saturday of each month. Participants will learn adult and child CPR as well as the proper operation of an AED. Following the training, participants will receive a certification from the American Heart Association. Register for an upcoming class at imaginemason.org.
EMERGENCY ACTION PLAN REVIEW
The Campus Safety Team will work collaboratively with you to help navigate the complexities of establishing and running an incident command system. Focus will be aimed at preparing and adapting a plan for employees during an emergency.
The Campus Safety Team builds upon Mason’s culture of wellness and positive relationship building. This innovative initiative continues to gain recognition for community collaboration and encourages detection programs and prevention efforts in many other communities moving forward in the future.

MADCAP PUPPETS HIGHLIGHTED FANTASTIC FAIRYTALES
Deerfield Township residents were treated to a wonderful afternoon of entertainment on February 19, when Deerfield Parks Department arranged to have the talented actors at MadCap Puppets present their hilarious show, “Fantastic Fairytales.” It took place at the Kings High School auditorium for 130 community members for the first time since 2019. This interactive show had everyone laughing, and had adults and kids alike becoming part of the show! All in attendance were then treated to a variety of after show activities, including a Program on Wheels from Cincinnati Museum Center. Children learned all about coral and other underwater creatures with a handson Exploration Station. Crafts, games, and searching for shells in sand tubs rounded out a perfect afternoon!
Community Safety Tip: Secure Your Valuables
During winter and summer seasons, residents have a general tendency to leave vehicles running when dropping off and picking up at daycares, or visiting other retail establishments which are thought to have brief visits. These are ideal situations for suspects to take advantage of unsuspecting residents. Suspects park next to unattended vehicles, then steal purses and bags, which they believe to contain cash, credit cards, checkbooks, and IDs. Suspects immediately take the credit cards to the nearest grocery store and purchase prepaid gift cards. This happens so quickly that residents typically don’t have an opportunity to notify their credit card company about the lost or stolen card. Suspects generally target newer model vehicles that are left unlocked and unattended.
The Mason Police Department along with all local police jurisdictions are asking residents to help keep the community safe by turning off and locking vehicles and never leaving valuables in plain sight. Be aware of your surroundings and call 911 if you observe any suspicious activity.

Police Leadership Promotions
Mason Police Department has 52 sworn police officers. Sworn personnel are assigned to various units inside the Police Department including campus safety, investigations section, traffic unit, and patrol. The Police Department also currently has three dual-purpose K9’s. Two of the police dogs are trained in narcotics and one K9 is trained in detecting explosives. In day-to-day public safety operations, promoted positions provide su-
pervision. During emergency incidents, a chain of command is utilized to achieve an effective solution to an emergency problem in short order. With the recent promotion of Chief Wells and the Mason Police Department’s advancement, this year’s priorities focus on staff growing into their new responsibilities and evaluating positions. Leadership and new changes will prepare the department well into the future.

Arts Alliance Celebrates Everyday Heroes
The Arts Alliance encourages the community to visit the “Everyday Heroes” Exhibition being held at Sinclair Community College, Courseview Campus, Building B, now through July 31, 2023.
This thoughtful exhibition recognizes those individuals in the community who tirelessly work each day to make our lives safer, easier, more beautiful, and efficient.
Over 50 paintings have been created by the Arts Alliance Painters. This painting group was founded in 2006 and meets weekly at the Snyder House at Cottell Park. There are 18 members registered in the group.
The paintings depict the postal worker, the nurse, the teacher, the parks worker, and so many others who enrich the community through their efforts. All subjects are those working in and around Warren County, Ohio.
“We are very proud of this important exhibition,” says Meredith Raffel, executive director of The Arts Alliance. “We felt it was important to recognize those individuals who are truly the cog in the wheel of this community. And what better way to do so but through the arts,” she adds.
Sinclair Community College has long been a valued arts partner to the Arts Alliance. The organization has been showcasing exhibitions at the college for over 10 years. The Arts Alliance presents three exhibitions each year at the college.
Most of the paintings will be for sale. Guests are encouraged to check the Sinclair website for campus hours. www.sinclairedu.org.

Tornado Warning Signs
Spring has arrived and summer is drawing near, which means more individuals and families visiting Mason City parks. When enjoying the parks or a City event, please be mindful of the weather conditions predicted or sudden changes in weather conditions. Participants, spectators, residents, and visitors are encouraged to follow a few safety measures:
“When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors”
• In 2001, the National Weather Service established the program “When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors” in an attempt to reduce the number of individuals annually killed due to lightning strikes.
Turn on Government Alerts/Emergency Alerts on your cell phone
• The Warning Alert and Response Network Act (WARN Act) is a system based on the existing Emergency Alert System (EAS), which are the warnings that you get on a television and radio when there is a weather incident or other emergency. Alerts are sent to cell towers providing wireless service to a target geographical area. Emergency alerts are issued because of an imminent threat to public safety or life, such as evacuation orders or shelter in place orders due to severe weather.
Download a Weather App
• Consider downloading a weather app to your cell phone to help alert you to severe weather conditions approaching or already in the area.
Outdoor Warning Sirens
• The City of Mason currently has 10 outdoor warning sirens that are activated by the Warren County Communications Center. The
purpose of the outdoor public warning siren system is to serve as an early warning device to alert citizens to take shelter indoors and seek additional information immediately.
• These sirens are not designed to be relied upon to provide sufficient warning indoors or in noisy areas. Sirens are tested the first Wednesday of each month.

Mental Health Awareness in Mason
Wellness is ingrained in the fiber of our community here in the City of Mason. Thanks to its interconnected network of niche biotech companies, Mason has become a vital hub of healthcare collaboration and innovation.
The City’s wellness-centric focus is much broader than just physical health. Equally important is mental health, and demand for treatment is higher than ever. Now more than ever, personalized medicine and approaches to mental health are critical. Fortunately, Mason businesses are leading the way to better treatments and better outcomes. To highlight the science and innovation happening in Mason in the Mental Health sector, each May, City Council proclaims it “Mental Health Awareness Month” and partners with businesses and healthcare providers to showcase resources.
Mason is fortunate to be home to the world-class Lindner Center of HOPE. A long term strategic partner to the City, the Lindner Center validates this region as a place where breakthroughs in mental health solutions are happening. Since 2015 the City and Lindner Center have partnered to bring a Community Education Day to the greater community. The collaborative research occurring in Mason at the Lindner Center of HOPE informs patient care. Nationally and internationally regarded clinician-scientists at the Research Institute work in collaboration with the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and other leading academic psychiatric research institutions around the country. With a focus on advanced research in genetics, psychopharmacology, and psychobiology, this is significant for patients given that it can typically take up to 17 years before research findings become fully integrated into routine diagnostics and treatment.
The Lindner Center’s research efforts have been instrumental in bringing new drugs to market for depression, bipolar disorder, and eating disorders, which have improved therapeutic efficacy and safety. In addition, the Research Institute is a member of the Harvard-based Clinical Trial Network and a lead contributor in groundbreaking programs, such as the Mayo Clinic’s Individual-

Lindner Center’s Associate Chief Research Officer even has a patent for a device that uses spinal stimulation as a new and hopeful treatment option for depression.
The Lindner Center of HOPE has cared for more than 50,000 patients worldwide since its founding in 2008. But in recent years, demand has challenged the Lindner Center’s ability to provide treatment.
“We have the expertise, we have the know-how, but we don’t have the capacity anymore,” Dr. Paul Crosby, Lindner Center’s president and CEO, told the Cincinnati Business Courier in February. “We need more providers; we need more space.”
With an eye on increased capacity, the nonprofit mental health center has acquired an additional 18 acres of land adjacent to its existing 36-acre campus, which will be used to accommodate the Lindner Center’s future growth needs. In addition to providing exceptional individualized patient care, the center is dedicated to mental health awareness and research initiatives that are changing outcomes in impactful ways during a critical time for our region and our country.
In addition to the Lindner Center of HOPE, Mason companies continue to be important partners to the City and critical components to the culture of wellness being cultivated here. The developing of niche industry sectors with novel innovations like those that are happening within Mason’s nationally recognized biohub are transforming the City and our mental health outcomes. Attracting, retaining, and cultivating such future-focused businesses is a key element of the City’s wellness-forward approach.

With in-store pick-up and delivery options, Robeks is also a great option for your Come Together Mason e-gift card.
Why did you choose to bring Robeks to Mason?
While celebrating our wedding anniversary in Arizona, we came across Robeks. I had the Raspberry Romance and my husband, Jason, had the 800 LB Gorilla. Everything was made fresh in front of us, with no added sugars. There’s nothing quite like it in Mason and this was an opportunity to immerse ourselves in something great for our community as well as a way for our kids to be involved. This has been a great family project.
What sets Robeks apart from other smoothie inspired options?
Everything on our menu can be modified. Smoothies, toasts, and bowls are all about nutrition and encourage clean eating. We use a juicer, not a press, and we trim and press our wheat grass.
What type of smoothie options do you offer?
Robeks offers acai smoothies, performance smoothies, classic smoothies, low-calorie smoothies, wellness smoothies, and fresh juices. Our biggest seller is the classic Strawnana Berry followed by the Big Wednesday and Mahalo Mango. Our daily customers tend to want the acai smoothies that include all natural supplements, so you don’t end up feeling bloated and sluggish.

DEERFIELD TOWNSHIP IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS
Public Works Projects and Improvements
2023 will be another active year for capital improvement and infrastructure projects in Deerfield Township. Numerous projects are scheduled for 2023, ranging from minor storm sewer repairs headed by the Deerfield Regional Storm Water District to significant roadway improvement projects, facility construction projects, and annual roadway maintenance programs.
Annually, the Township performs a Pavement Condition Rating (PCR) on every street in the Township to assign a numeric grade to each roadway’s physical condition. From that rating, a table determines which roads will be resurfaced or maintained in a year.
The PCR includes pavement age, current condition, traffic volumes, and the overall level of deterioration.
Deerfield Township budgets from the Road and Bridge Fund for our annual resurfacing project. This project includes roadway milling, pavement resurfacing, curb repair, storm sewer repair, signage upgrades, sidewalk repairs/replacement, and pavement marking improvements. The annual resurfacing project in 2023 has a cost estimate of $1 million.

Summer Safety
Summer is a favorite time of year for many children and adults and is often filled with swimming, cookouts, travel, and outdoor fun. With the increase in activities in the community, summer can also carry risks. The City encourages you to stay aware and take precautions.
KEEP WATCH AT THE POOL
• Water safety should be a top priority for parents since it only takes seconds for drowning to occur. Always keep children under active supervision and never assume someone else is supervising. Swimming with a buddy is also a great safety system. Swimming is not only fun but a lifesaving skill. Check out Mason Community Center swim lesson offerings at imaginemason.org.
SUN EXPOSURE PROTECTION
• Apply sunscreen every day with SPF 30 or higher that block both UVA (affects the deep layers of skin) and UVB (damages the outermost layers of the skin causing sunburn). Reapply every three hours or immediately after your child has been in water. Try to avoid outdoor activities during peak sunshine hours, and consider dressing children in sun protective clothing.
TAKE BREAKS
• Take frequent water breaks and wear lightweight and light colored clothing when playing outside. Heat exhaustion can occur suddenly without warning and the risk of this rises highly during warmer months. Be aware of signs for heat exhaustion including pale, clammy skin, dizziness, and muscle cramps.
PEDESTRIAN SAFETY
• With the increase of activities comes an increase in vehicle and foot traffic. Use sidewalks whenever possible and always stay alert. If no sidewalks are available, walk facing oncoming traffic as far left as possible. Cross the street at designated cross walks. For motorists, drive with full attention and put down electronic devices. Be alert for unpredictable situations, like children playing.
BIKE RIDING
• With over 35 miles to ride bikes in Mason, more bikes will be out and about this summer. Always wear a helmet to prevent serious bicycle injuries. Make sure bikes and helmets fit properly and follow road rules including traffic lights and stop signs.
OUTDOOR FIRES
• Knowing the guidelines for starting, monitoring, and extinguishing fires assists with your safety and the safety of those around you. Any outdoor fire must be constantly attended until it’s extinguished with a fire extinguisher or material such as dirt and sand. Keep fires at least 25 feet away from any structure, no higher than 2 feet and no wider than 3 feet. Portable outdoor fires need to be at least 15 feet away from any structure or combustible materials.

What’s New at The Grizzly
Spring has sprung and The Grizzly has come out of hibernation! We’re excited to welcome back all of our guests for the 2023 golf season.
The Masters Tournament in April was a celebration of excellence, dedication, and passion for golf. May it inspire us to strive for greatness in all aspects of our lives and remind us that with hard work and perseverance, anything is possible.
With that in mind, the course will be in excellent shape this year with the completion of the irrigation project. The new Toro Lynx Central Control System gives the golf course Superintendents new capabilities to address the unique challenges and changing priorities faced everyday with changing weather conditions. This system will help staff stay continually connected to the irrigation system to ensure irrigation management is as efficient and effective as possible throughout the year.
The new EZ Go Elite golf cart fleet was a premier addition to the course last year. The Elite Lithium golf carts cost less to operate year after year and use half the energy compared to the old fleet. The vehicles still have enough charge after 36 holes to play another round on the course. The Lithium battery only weighs 46 pounds (compared to 328 for lead acid batteries) and with a lighter, more compact battery the vehicles are much easier on the turf.
The new fleet is also equipped with Pace Technology digital screens. With these, The Grizzly Golf and Social Lodge can optimize operational efficiency with pace-of-play tracking, set speed
enforcement areas to ensure safe driving, protect the facility with geo-fencing capabilities, and locate the vehicles anywhere they go. We can also enhance the guest experience with digital scorecards, accurate GPS distances, heat mapped greens, and more.
This year, The Grizzly is excited to announce being a host site for the Ladies National Golf Association’s 93rd Amateur Championship from July 25 to 27!
The Ladies National Golf Association (LNGA) focuses on hosting elite tournaments that grow the game, and their participants and Champions are the kind who make golf history. The national event will bring 100–120 players from across the country to compete in Mason in the 93rd Amateur Championship.
The Grizzly Golf and Social Lodge was selected because it shares the values and goals of the LNGA such as providing ways to grow women’s golf, the golf course is a great test of the game, and The Grizzly has an incredible history of hosting elite championships.
Stay tuned to masongrizzly.com for upcoming activities and events including Members Events, Major’s Junior Camp, The Swing & Sip, the 2nd Annual Mason Classic, and the Superintendents Revenge. There’s something for anyone who wants to spend a day on the golf course.
The Grizzly is also a great destination for those looking for a place to socialize. The Great 18 Bar & Grill offers a gorgeous setting for the Great 18 Live! Summer Music Series. The Great 18 Bar and Grill has Trivia Nights on Mondays, Brunch on Sundays, and plenty of themed events planned throughout the year.
Join us this summer at The Grizzly Golf and Social Lodge, where you can play like a legend, eat like a grizzly, and enjoy like a champion!

LIVE WORK AND PLAY IN MASON
Cardiovascular Innovation Has a Strong Pulse in Mason
AtriCure, TriHealth are leading the charge for better heart health through powerful partnerships and scientific advancements.
Two companies in the City of Mason are moving the needle when it comes to innovation in the cardiovascular health space.
Mason-based AtriCure recently kicked off the largest clinical trial of its kind to test the stroke-prevention capabilities of its AtriClip technology. Meanwhile, TriHealth, which has led the push for healthier living in Mason, has forged a one-of-a-kind partnership with the nation’s top-ranked heart program.
ATRICURE MAKES HISTORY WITH LATEST CLINICAL TRIAL
AtriCure, a leading innovator in surgical treatments and therapies for atrial fibrillation (Afib), left atrial appendage (LAA) management and post-operative pain management, announced in January that the first patient had received treatment in the Left Atrial Appendage Exclusion for Stroke Prevention (LeAAPS) clinical trial. LeAAPS aims to inform and better define clinical practice and treatment guidelines for stroke prevention in patients undergoing planned cardiac surgery with an elevated risk of ischemic stroke and systemic embolism.
The patient—who was treated by the study’s U.S. co-principal, Dr. Marc Gerdisch, at Franciscan St. Francis Heart Center in Indianapolis—was the first of up to 6,500 patients to be treated at as many as 250 centers worldwide, making LeAPPS the largest clinical trial of its kind and one of the largest trials in the history of cardiac devices.
AtriCure first entered the LAA market upon receiving FDA clearance of its AtriClip System in 2010. Today, AtriClip system products are the most widely used LAA management devices in the world. AtriCure expects the LeAAPS trial results to expand the labeled indications for use of the system to include stroke prevention in patients with elevated risk of ischemic stroke events.
“The LeAPPS trial is a landmark study to evaluate the prophylactic use of AtriClip devices for stroke reduction in cardiac surgery patients without a preoperative Afib diagnosis, laying the groundwork for a new frontier in stroke prevention,” says Michael Carrel, AtriCure president and CEO. “We have an impressive roster of world-class physicians and hospitals that will be enrolling patients, and we see a substantial opportunity to leverage the AtriClip platform for better long-term outcomes in this patient population while expanding our markets.”
TRIHEALTH PARTNERS WITH CLEVELAND CLINIC
TriHealth is now an affiliate of Cleveland Clinic’s Heart, Vascu-
lar & Thoracic Institute, the nation’s top-ranked heart program according to U.S. News & World Report.
Cleveland Clinic will work with TriHealth clinicians and multidisciplinary teams, including those at Good Samaritan Hospital, Bethesda North Hospital, and the TriHealth Heart & Vascular Institute. Cleveland Clinic’s Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute—which has taken the top spot in the U.S. News & World Report’s rankings for cardiology and heart surgery in each of the last 28 years—will share clinical best practices for patient care, giving TriHealth patients access to the expertise of Cleveland Clinic physicians as well as the latest technologies and innovations in heart care.
“This clinical affiliation builds on significant investments by TriHealth over the past several years to develop the region’s destination heart and vascular program,” says Mark Clement, TriHealth president and CEO. “This endeavor complements other TriHealth enterprise collaborations with a focus on improving healthcare through strategic relationships.”
This relationship makes TriHealth—the City’s long-time partner at Mason Community Center—an exclusive Cleveland Clinic Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute affiliate in southern Ohio.
“Management of heart disease is complex, but we can advance the treatment of cardiovascular disease to benefit our communities by working together on programs like this,” says Lars Svensson, M.D., Ph.D., chairman of Cleveland Clinic’s Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute. “Our affiliation with TriHealth will allow for sharing of best practices, while working together to ensure the highest quality care to TriHealth’s patients.”

Imagination Library
Just like the Little Engine That Could, we knew we could!! Warren County Imagination Library has over 8,000 active enrollees by the end of first quarter of 2023! We currently have nearly 6,000 IL “graduates” who are entering kindergarten ready to read. Our goal for this year is to have 70% of WC children receiving free DPIL books. We think we can! We think we can!
To enroll any child from birth to age 5 www.imaginationlibrary. com
This spring, two Warren County nonprofit organizations, Family Promise and Safe on Main, will be participating in Imagination Library StoryTime. Volunteer readers will go to those sites to sing, rhyme, and read with families who are in these temporary housing facilities. Parents/caregivers will attend StoryTime with their child(ren) to observe read-aloud tips that support early literacy preparation. The hope is, through this modeled reading, families will apply these skills as they read-aloud at home. Research proves that reading to children is THE best preparation for literacy learning in school. That is why Imagination Library exists in this county and is supported by our libraries, schools and organizations. In this endeavor we are rich—and our children are the benefactors.
It is important to give a special shout-out to the five county libraries for financially and actively supporting WCIL. In order to sustain WCIL into perpetuity, we are seeking support by creating an endowment to which individuals/groups can make donations. Contact Warren County Foundation for more information. Your generosity WILL impact young lives! We KNOW you can!

Kings Local Schools
Kings High School recognizes that not all students want or are able to go to college post-high school. However, we must help prepare all students for the outside world, regardless of their interests. Employability/Workforce Development classes at Kings High School aim to provide students with skills and knowledge related to the workforce, career readiness, and professional development. In addition to classroom instruction, workforce development classes include experiential learning opportunities like job shadowing, internships, or work-based learning projects. Students also learn the importance of soft skills, like shaking hands, maintaining eye contact, and putting phones away; as well as life skills, like changing a flat tire, jump starting a dead battery, reading a tape measure, and more.
Overall, workforce development classes aim to help students build the skills and knowledge needed to succeed and pursue their career goals. The class started in 2018 with 25 kids and one class, and now the course has grown to eight classes with over 160 students. In addition to the workforce development class, beginning next school year, Kings will be adding an internship course at Kings High School. This course will give students an opportunity to get real work experience during the school day. The District is partnering with local businesses to offer internships. If you know any local business that would be interested in supervising interns, please contact Matt Freeman, Kings Director of Teaching and Learning, at mfreeman@ kingslocal.net.
The Kings Local School District and the University of Cincinnati (UC) were the recipients of a statewide mathematics and literacy tutoring grant that spans two years. These funds allow UC students to serve as tutors and provide high-quality, research-based tutoring to students. The UC tutors are in every Kings building Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Many students have experienced learning loss due to the pandemic. These grant funds allow students to receive intensive tutoring to close the learning gap. It provides a valuable professional experience for the UC students, many of whom are education majors.
There are 18 UC tutors that serve approximately 200 Kings students. Dr. Casey Hord and Dr. Kate Doyle, both UC special education faculty, are the primary investigators (PIs) on the project.
City of Mason Employee Collaboration
The City of Mason facilitates a relationship among departments based on collaboration and development, working together to provide the best services to the residents and businesses within the City of Mason. Recently, staff coordinated efforts across departments to assist in this year’s tax season. Every year, several employees across all City departments come together to help the finance/tax team with their operations, which are at an all-time high during tax season. These employees work with the finance team for mail assistance and to assist at the Customer Service Desk, allowing for a more efficient work system in tax. Along with the tax season collaboration, employees also recently came together to help Public Utilities with oxidation ditch (tank) cleaning. This cleaning maintenance ensures the tanks get the same amount of run time to prolong the life of City equipment. Aerators inside the oxidation ditches run all day, every day of the year and each year the tanks are switched during this process. Staff across City departments will help remove sludge in the oxidation tanks so the biosolids do not begin decomposing and creating odor. These annual initiatives, like others, help bridge the connection between the City and local residents, fostering a supportive environment throughout the City.

City of Mason Fire Department Celebrates 25 Years
The first recorded effort of fire protection in Mason occurred in 1856 when the Village Council recognized “the need for the purchase of hooks and ladders for the corporation for fire protection.” While equipment was present, the first organized fire company was not organized until 1892. Dr. J.M. VanDyke was named the first fire chief of the Mason Volunteer Fire Engine, Hose, and Ladder Company. The village fire company provided fire protection within the village limits. In 1948, the Mason Volunteer Fire Company (MVFC) was created as a separate organization and responded to calls outside the village limits. The organizations would co-exist until 1961 when the MVFC assumed fire protection responsibilities for the village and the surrounding areas. The MVFC had added EMS responsibilities in 1953 and introduced paramedic level service to the area in 1980.
On October 1, 1998, the City of Mason Fire Department was established. In the past 25 years, the department has transitioned from a volunteer and part-time organization to one staffed by 55 full-time members. The Department provides emergency medical, fire suppression, fire prevention, fire investigation, technical rescue, hazardous materials, and fire and life safety education services to the community. The Department operates two fire stations staffed by a total of 12–16 first responders operating two fire apparatus, three ambulances, and one supervisor vehicle.
Stay tuned for the City of Mason Fire Department’s 25 year celebration of dedication and safety this fall.

City of Mason Manta Rays Training
The City of Mason Manta Rays swim program is ranked in the top 1% of 3,000 USA Swimming teams. Since the program’s establishment, the Mason Manta Rays program has produced nationally and internationally ranked athletes that have gone on to continue their swimming career at the collegiate level and have had representation at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials since 2008. These competitive athletes possess a strong sense of discipline, maintain a vigorous training regimen, and stay focused and healthy.
The swim year is divided into two seasons. The winter season, also known as the “short course” season runs from mid-September to mid-March. These meets are held in a 25-yard pool. The summer season, also known as the “long course” season, runs from early April to mid-August. These meets are typically held in a 50-meter pool. Time commitment during the year-round swim season increases gradually as each swimmer develops and improves among the different age groups and levels.
Manta Ray alumni swimmers often come home to train and practice with the team throughout the summer during their summer break. Not only do they return for the camaraderie amongst swimmers and guidance from their coaches, but for the diverse in-water and dryland training regimens and pool options. With the addition of the Mason Municipal Aquatic Center enclosed 50-meter pool, Mason is able to elevate the in-water training to the next level.
This year, through Mason’s partnership with TriHealth, staff were connected with a swimmer in Africa whose parents had been looking at training options all over the world. The family knew about the City’s program because Carson Foster has competed often against one of the best swimmers in South Africa. Mulenga, aged 13, was training in Tanzania where the family lived but he
was born in Zambia and swam for the Zambia National Swimming Team. He started competitive swimming at 10 years old and has progressed quickly. His father is originally from the Lakota area and based on his son’s goals, moving to Mason was a great option. Mulenga began swimming with the City of Mason Manta Rays this spring.
Another swimmer, Jarrett Payne, is a national age group record holder from Sidney, Ohio. He will be driving 70 miles each way to train and be a part of the City’s program for the next one and a half years before he graduates. Jarrett has committed to swim on scholarship to the University of Alabama and is joining the City’s team for many of the same reasons as Mulenga.

Putting HEALTH First in Health Care
HOW POPULATION HEALTH WORKS FOR THE INDIVIDUAL
Paula, age 40, came to her internal medicine office in the Mason Community Center and described a two-year struggle with chronic abdominal pain and diarrhea. Her TriHealth Nurse Practitioner Laura Singer, MSN, APRN, NP-C, listened attentively and reviewed her chart, noting a family history of colon cancer. They discussed colonoscopy as a next step to evaluate her colon, and Singer contacted a gastroenterologist, who set up the procedure the same week. Results of the test revealed that Paula has Crohn’s disease and, after weighing options, she agreed to begin receiving infusions to calm her colon inflammation and symptoms. The gastrointestinal specialist communicated his plan with Singer and will manage this portion of Paula’s care. When Singer next sees Paula, she will be fully aware of this important piece of her patient’s overall health.
“This proactive approach is about taking care of each patient as a whole person,” Singer says. “We’re not just treating a sore throat or high blood pressure. We want patients to see how everything fits together to give them the best chance to live a long and healthy life.”
Population health focuses on the welfare of the entire patient and community. It starts with a healthcare provider you trust and an electronic medical record that alerts you when you need health screenings or a checkup. With your provider, you create a plan to help you stay healthy, including diet, exercise and routine checkups and screenings. You also have an entire network of healthcare experts ready to assist you with specialized care.
For people with chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease, she says, “By staying on top of preventive screenings and routine lab work and monitoring, we can hopefully reduce incidence of progression of disease and longterm side effects.”
Some elements you can expect from a population health model include:
• Relationship with a primary care provider who earns your trust by listening closely, knowing your health history and working with you to achieve your optimal health.
• Close communication among a team of health professionals. Your primary care provider may arrange for a specialist to examine your heart or lungs, or consult
with a pharmacist if you haven’t filled a prescription. The team may contact a social worker if cost or transportation are preventing you from getting what you need. In addition, if you are going home after a hospitalization, hospital personnel will alert your primary care provider. This gives you an ongoing support system to answer questions and offer instructions on medicines and other steps to maximize healing and recovery.
• Referrals to specialists who not only have expertise with your condition, but who are selected to match as closely as possible with your personality and communication style.
• Complete and accurate health history on your electronic health record that alerts both you and your health provider when screenings and checkups are due and offers easy online or phone scheduling.
“We’re continuing to see more and more cases of chronic disease that are potentially preventable, and with COVID, so many people stopped coming in for routine checkups and screenings,” Singer says. “By using population health strategies, we hope to shift the pattern to preventing diseases rather than just treating them.”
Developing healthy patients and addressing their small problems before they become big ones is the focus of an increasingly popular healthcare concept called population health, which is shifting the medical paradigm from treating sick patients primarily to enhancing wellness in patients.

Turn Mason Parks Into Your Own Outdoor Gym
With over 300 acres of Mason parks to enjoy, enhancing your fitness routine is a breeze this summer. Using gravity and your body weight as resistance can be just as effective as what you can do with a dumbbell, machine, or barbell. Complement your Community Center workouts with an outdoor workout at one of Mason’s local parks.
Playgrounds and fields aren’t just for kids anymore!
• Do push-ups on the back of a park bench, seat of a bench, or on the ground based on your level of comfort.
• Do pull-ups on the monkey bars.
• Grab the chains of a swing, lean back, and with your body straight and abs contracted, use your upper back and arm muscles to pull yourself up to a standing position.
• Hang from a bar or monkey bars and use your core to pull your knees up into your chest.
• Do squats at a bench, but squat just low enough that you don’t touch the seat before standing up again.
• On a bench seat, perform triceps dips and keep your knees bent or straight based on your skill level.
• Do sprints or walking lunges across the soccer fields.
• Keep your feet together with your feet parallel to a soccer or tennis line and hop from side to side over the line.
Mason parks offers paved and wooded trails that are great for nature walks, family strolls, going for a run, or riding your bike. Whether you’re a walker, beginning to run, or training for a race, the City has paths for you. And with a connection to the Little Miami Scenic Trail through Mason Sports Park, you have over 110 miles through five counties to explore.

Can You Take the Heat?
The City of Mason continues to grow a culture of wellness and Lieutenant Julie Miller with the Mason Fire Department is a great example of collaborating for overall wellness. She saw a need to further develop the public safety profession and provide individuals with a successful career. Seeing a need to attract a new generation to train and develop within the public safety profession, Lt. Julie Miller worked with a core group of female firefighters in the region to revive a local program known as, Can You Take the Heat? This program has been designed to spark interest among females in the fire and emergency medical services field.
Held annually at Scarlet Oaks in Sharonville, Can You Take the Heat? is an eight-hour, one day program for females ages 12 and older to experience the work of a firefighter and emergency medical technician. Participants have the oppor-

Several participants of the program have now reached 18 years of age or older, which is the required age to become a firefighter in the State of Ohio. One of those participants, Firefighter/EMT Rachel Rivera, began a full-time position with the City of Mason this past January. Thank you, Lt. shared their thoughts on the process and fielded questions from parents, staff, and community representatives on the Portrait of a Learner. The 5 competencies for Mason’s Portrait of a Comet, grounded in the three Big Rocks, are integrity, adaptability, empathy, communication, and critical thinking.
The session also included a presentation by the three student finalists for the Portrait of the Learner graphic design. Over 20 MHS students competed in the challenge, and a $100 prize was presented by the Mason Schools Foundation to the winner. As a surprise, the top three finalists, Aashna Bhargava, Dasha Tsyliuryk, and Charles Wen each received a $100 prize at the event!
Tradition in Mason is rooted in a continuous quest to give Mason Comets outstanding opportunities to make sure they are prepared for their future. We had many opportunities over the last few years to lean on Mason City Schools three Big Rocks of Culture, Inclusive Excellence, and Personalized Learning, and are using that foundation to help guide our journey. For many years, a key Mason commitment from boards of education and leadership teams has been to engage the community, and we’re excited to watch our community chart a course for the future of Mason City Schools over the next decade and beyond. Now more than ever, learning experiences for our students must not only provide for the acquisition of rigorous academic content, but must foster future-ready, human skills and mindsets our Gen Z and Gen Alpha Comet Kids will need to flourish.
On January 25, Mason students, staff, families, business owners, and representatives from higher education came together for our final Journey to 2030 design team session. Over 1,000 members of our community were part of the design team or gave feedback through surveys.
The final design team session included a student panel featuring six MMS and MHS students who served on the Student Design Team. The students
During a March 10 Professional Work Day, staff had a chance to provide additional feedback, and begin unpacking what these enduring human skills will mean for our learners. In August, families will be introduced to the Portrait of a Comet as part of the district’s Family Orientation Days.
WHAT’S NEXT
Having established the vision for our learners, we are ready to build a broader roadmap for our school district’s future. The Journey to 2030 roadmap will address the alignment of resources and investments needed to prepare our learners to thrive now and in the future. Those resources and investments include facilities, staffing, systems, and technology infrastructure. We see this roadmap as an opportunity to build on our existing promising practices while also incorporating new innovative practices and systems that will ensure our students are prepared to thrive as learners, leaders, and citizens. The roadmap will lay out our commitment to ensuring the Mason Quality our community expects.

Musically Macabre Showcase: The Addams Family Meeting Room
They’re creepy and they’re kooky—meet the Addams family! In this upside-down world, learn that to be sad is to be happy, to feel pain is to feel joy, and that creepiness is the stuff of dreams. Through a selection of songs and scenes, campers will follow the story of the musical as the Addams family face up to the one horrible thing they’ve managed to avoid for generations: change. Classes in singing and dancing—plus an extended rehearsal and performance class—will get you ready for your “altogether ooky” Performance Academy Showcase at the end of the week.

GOLF TIP
Your aim in golf is to build a simple repeatable swing that hits the ball where you want Try not to fall into the trap of perfecting what your golf swing looks like Instead focus on what counts and build your own golf swing that works for you Many of your fellow playing partners may point out parts of a golf swing that ‘don’t look right’ but just because your backswing isn’t textbook it doesn’t mean it is causing your -yard slice
