SPECIAL ADVERTISING SUPPLEMENT
[ 2015] FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
WELCOME TO THE 2015 EDITION of the Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce Membership Directory & Business Resource Guide. We are pleased to again partner with Cincinnati Magazine and Anderson Township government to deliver this valuable and informative community publication. We are very proud to be part of the reason that Anderson Township was named “Best Suburban Community” by CityBeat and “Cincinnati’s Best Community” by WCPO Channel 9 in a recent community poll. Along with Anderson Township Government, Forest Hills Local School District and Anderson Township Park District, we each strive to provide the best possible services that we can to make Anderson a great place to live, work and prosper! For over 40 years the Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce has supported the businesses and residents of Anderson Township and more recently the businesses and residents of Newtown, Mt. Washington and western Clermont County. We have seen many changes in that time. Economic development continues to bring new businesses to the area, including a redevelopment of the Anderson Towne Center with a new movie theater, along with 8–10 new retail businesses. Kroger will be expanding its current location, as well as developing the land to the east into additional parking and retail space on the corner of Wolfangel and Beechmont. Mercy Health Hospital – Anderson is also expanding in 2015 to provide 200 private rooms, plus additional parking and other upgrades to the current facility. The Chamber continues to evolve and keep up with the technology side of communicating with its members. The Chamber’s social media presence continues to grow with each ‘Like’ and ‘Follow’ it receives. If you haven’t already, please join us on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Google+ or YouTube to keep up with the latest news and educational information from the Chamber. We strive to be a leader in the community and want to connect with the businesses and residents in every way. The Chamber provides its members with a variety of useful benefits that include discounted rates on workers’ comp and medical benefits, as well as great networking events and Professional Development seminars to help businesses grow. In addition, we offer a member benefit in conjunction with Infintech Payment Processing to help control the costs of credit-card processing. This program allows Chamber members to take advantage of Infintech’s cost-plus pricing model, which shows you exactly what you are paying for and allows you to see what fees Infintech is receiving. It is a very transparent pricing model that is easy to understand. We continue to create new events, programs and partnerships to educate, stimulate and maximize the return that our members receive. The Chamber is in its fourth year of a partnership with the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber; you pay one low price, you get membership to two great chambers. This gives businesses maximum exposure in the city and also access to additional Professional Development courses, networking opportunities, cost savings programs and much more. So whether you are a business owner, employee or resident in the Anderson area, we welcome you and encourage you to shop locally and enjoy all that the area has to offer.

[ 2015] ABOUT THE CHAMBER
Around Anderson Township
Continues to Grow WHEN AROUND ANDERSON TOWNSHIP WAS CREATED IN APRIL OF 2011, it was a simple website featuring local human interest stories about a few of the amazing people and organizations in the area. A few key members of the community noticed the growing popularity of articles and information, and the site quickly grew into a place where the great things about Anderson Township, and the surrounding areas, converged into the award-winning organization that it is today. With thousands of weekly visitors to the website, more than 6,000 organic followers on social media, weekly news read all over the tri-state and community interaction that area residents have come to count on, it’s no wonder that the Greater Cincinnati area is paying attention to what we are doing “around Anderson Township.” In April of 2014, the Greater Cincinnati Area American Society for Public Administration presented the organization’s creator, Gregory M. Harshfield, with the Outstanding Community Volunteer award. This award was a result of a nomination from Anderson Township administration, the Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce, Forest Hills School District and the Anderson Township Park District. From lost-pet reports to major township news and event coverage, Around Anderson Township brings the community closer together. Visit the website, follow on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, read the weekly news, and see why people all over the Greater Cincinnati area are talking about Anderson Township.
“I wanted to give the people around Anderson a place to get news and helpful information about all the great aspects of our area, while also creating a resource for others to see what an incredible community we live in. It has turned into that and so much more.”

Awarded 5 stars in the Medicare Quality Care Indicators for overall quality care in nursing homes.
2013 and 2014 The United States Medicare program awards Mt. Washington Care Center a prestigious Five Star Quality Rating! The Five-Star Quality Rating System was created to help consumers, their families, and caregivers compare nursing homes more easily and help identify areas about which you may want to ask questions. This rating system is based on continued efforts as a result of the Omnibus Reconciliation Act of 1987 (OBRA '87), a nursing home reform law, and more recent quality improvement campaigns such as the Advancing Excellence in America's Nursing Homes, a coalition of consumers, health care providers, and nursing home professionals.
Nursing home ratings are taken from the following three sources of data:
• Health Inspections • Staffing • Quality Measures Nursing homes vary in the quality of care and services they provide to their residents. Reviewing these three important areas is to measure nursing home quality. This information gives you a "snap shot" of the care individual nursing homes give. Mt. Washington Care Center is a 24 hour care skilled nursing facility in the Anderson area with an excellent reputation in for quality care of loved ones. We also provide short term rehabilitation services for those recovering from a hospital stay with the goal to return home. Family owned and operated nursing facility for over 30 years.

A Most Livable Lifestyle GREATER ANDERSON OFFERS IT ALL
T
THERE ARE GOOD REASONS
why Anderson Township has been named CityBeat’s “Best Suburban Neighborhood,” Hamilton County’s “most livable” community and voted as “Cincinnati’s Best Community” in a recent media community poll. Nestled in the southeastern corner of the county, Anderson is bordered by the natural beauty of two major rivers, the Ohio and the Little Miami, and the lush, wooded hillsides that rise from their banks. This scenic topography includes nearly 3,000 acres
of parks and other open spaces and offers a fitting backdrop for a township that is home to dozens of charming suburban neighborhoods. With a rich history dating back more than 150 years, the community enjoys strong roots that provide a firm base from which thriving local businesses, award-winning schools and state-of-the-art government services have evolved. Established in 1793, the area remained a close-knit rural community for decades. New development began in earnest in the
1950s after completion of the Beechmont Levee offered easy access to downtown Cincinnati, just 12 miles away. Although it is one of the most popular and modern townships in the county today, development has been carefully managed to preserve the natural beauty and charm that attracted the area’s first residents more than a century ago and continues to attract newcomers today. Anderson truly offers its residents a “most livable” place to call home.

neighborhood living Mt. Washington
Pierce Township
Historic charm and a lively business district give Mt. Washington a distinct appeal. As part of the City of Cincinnati, it offers an urban feel, yet still manages to retain its small-town neighborly atmosphere. Just minutes from downtown Cincinnati, neighborhoods in this community are also a short distance from outdoor adventures in the thousands of acres of parks and open spaces offered in Anderson Township. As part of the City of Cincinnati Public Schools, families in Mt. Washington enjoy being a part of Sands Montessori, a magnet school of excellence, and Mt. Washington School, a campus offering enrollment for students in kindergarten through sixth grade.
Located in Clermont County, Pierce Township offers rural appeal with easy access to urban and suburban conveniences like shopping, dining and entertainment. Well-maintained neighborhoods with a variety of home price options make this community attractive to families. Easy access to outdoor recreation, such as boating on the Ohio River or golfing at one of three beautiful courses, is also a plus. With good schools, safe neighborhoods and state-of-the-art public services, Pierce Township offers a high quality of life to its residents.
Newtown Situated in the heart of the Little Miami River Valley, residents of Newtown enjoy immediate access to the recently expanded Little Miami Scenic Trail, a cherished recreational outlet that attracts visitors year round. Small-town charm is abundant in the neighborhoods of Newtown, which offers a mix of residential living, encompassing everything from picturesque older homes to newer upscale construction. Award-winning schools and numerous community events, such as an annual 5K run, Memorial Day Parade, fall Pumpkin Fest at Burger Farm & Garden Center, and Winterfest, round out the reasons why so many choose Newtown as home.
Anderson Township With the convenience of modern shopping, dining and business centers, and the serene beauty of the many parks, Greenspace districts and suburban neighborhoods that Anderson boasts, this community truly offers the best of everything to its residents. One of the centerpiece developments is Anderson Towne Center, which offers numerous retail options, including one of the largest Kroger stores in the country. Redevelopment, set to begin this summer, will add even more shops and restaurants to this space, as well as a new movie theater. A new continuous-flow intersection at Beechmont Avenue and Five Mile Road will help facilitate travel through this area and ease congestion during peak travel times. Anderson also boasts top-rated schools, achieving the Excellent or Excellent with Distinction rating for the past 12 years on the Ohio State Report Card. 18 • Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce
Union Township This community has seen growth of nearly 10 percent over the past decade as families have discovered its livable neighborhoods—removed from urban congestion, yet still close to desired services like shopping and dining. Eastgate Shopping Center, a large mall with anchors Sears, Dillard’s and Kohl’s, is the largest shopping destination in the area. The community also boasts a large civic center, which is home to a U.S. Post office, a gym with basketball and volleyball courts, and a large amphitheater that hosts outdoor concerts each summer. Affordable housing and high-quality schools are also reasons why many families choose to live in Union Township.

ANDERSON TOWNSHIP GOVERNMENT
Trustees
T
THOUGHTFUL PLANNING IS A
hallmark of Anderson Township government. This attention to detail characterizes the community’s approach to its past and future, enabling smart growth and careful preservation of community assets such as Greenspace and historic treasures, all while striving to keep taxes as low as possible. Governed by a three-person elected board of trustees, Anderson is a full-service township with its own public works and fire departments. The township contracts for policing services from the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office. With the busy commercial corridor of Beechmont Avenue as a major hub and shopping destination, Anderson government has worked to balance commercial activity with the community’s other appealing qualities, such as parks, safe neighborhoods and attractive community centers. Anderson was the first township in the state with its own Greenspace program, which currently protects nearly 700 acres of naturalized environment. As evidenced by this program, in conjunction with a dedicated park district (the Anderson Township Park District), the community has been recognized as a leader in the development of recreational spaces, having 60 acres of Greenspace and parks for every 1,000 residents. As part of its comprehensive plan to enhance public recreation, Anderson Township has actively sought to expand the hike and bike trails in the township, which has led to a network of walkable paths including the Five Mile Trail, a 2.5 mile hilly trail that winds through wooded areas and open fields.
President Russell L. Jackson Jr. First Vice President Joshua S. Gerth As part of its commitment to creating a center of the community, the township built the Anderson Center-Anderson Lake-Anderson Center Station campus. The centerpiece of this is Anderson Center, a multipurpose venue that hosts government offices as well as a community theater, a dedicated History Room and arts venue. It is also a popular gathering place for community and family events. Lovely Anderson Lake serves as an outdoor community space and can be reserved for weddings and other special events. Anderson Center Station, also a part of the campus, is the site of the Anderson Farmers’ Market, a spring, summer and fall tradition. The township’s responsible governance also includes careful fiscal management that has kept property taxes in check and has allowed the township to maintain the highest rating from Moody’s Investors Service. Township leaders have sought not only to engage but also to involve residents in local decision-making activities. Hence, more than 80 volunteers serve on eight citizen committees that advise the trustees on key issues ranging from zoning to transportation and economic development. These quality services and amenities have made Anderson Township a solid investment for homeowners, who saw property values rise by 34 percent between 2000 and 2010. The average resale value of a home in Anderson as of January 2015 was $251,126. Anderson’s government leadership continues to ensure that residents enjoy a high quality of life in a community that respects its past while planning for its future.

With nine area schools and more than 7,400 students, the Forest Hills School District offers students more than 165 courses, including four languages and 22 Advanced Placement courses. The district is one of four in the state to earn the highest rating on the state report card for 12 consecutive years. Last fall, the voters in the district approved a bond issue to upgrade every school and provide a new building for Wilson Elementary. Extensive renovation of eight schools, retrofitting buildings for air conditioning, and other improvements that impact technology, learning environments and transportation are in the works. Forest Hills high school students at both Anderson and Turpin consistently outperform their peers on the SAT and ACT tests, as well as state tests. In addition, both high schools have been accredited by AdvanceED, which performs rigorous reviews of schools and school systems and rates them on their ability to ensure that all students reach their full potential. Last year, the high schools doubled the number of students taking Advanced Placement courses. Of those taking the tests, 223 were named AP Scholars. In addition, 11 Forest Hills seniors were

named finalists in the annual National Merit Scholarship Program, an honor fewer than 1 percent of the country’s high school students achieve. Nagel Middle School has been named an Ohio and National School to Watch as a middle school that is considered academically excellent, developmentally responsive and socially equitable. All-around excellence is encouraged in students at all grade levels through practice of the 40 Developmental Assets— qualities that help students build upon their strengths and character to become caring, responsible and successful adults. Forest Hills also offers more than 100 extracurricular and cocurricular activities. Through athletics, the arts and other activities, students are encouraged to enjoy many opportunities to enrich their education through programs beyond the core curriculum.
PRIVATE SCHOOLS Guardian Angels Guardian Angels, a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, launched a new enrichment program in 2014 called Halo Bell that challenges each student in areas of problem solving, critical thinking and creativity. The school was a 2014 recipient of the Thomas Edison Governor’s Award for STEM Education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math). Michelle Gallagher, a Guardian Angels science teacher, also received the Outstanding Teacher Award for her work in the classroom. Guardian Angels is dedicated to incorpo-
rating the newest technology so students are better prepared to enter high school. The 1:1 tablet program begins in sixth grade, when each student is given his or her own tablet to use. Music, art, physical education and Spanish are also part of the education students receive at Guardian Angels beginning at the kindergarten level.
Archbishop McNicholas High School Students at McNicholas High School are encouraged to be true to themselves. To help them achieve this goal, the school offers 21st century technology, personalized attention and rigorous academic programming. Technology is integrated into every class through the tablet PC program. Through a curriculum that includes 13 AP classes and the SAIL program for identified learners, students of all abilities have the opportunity for academic excellence. The theater program has made 20 consecutive appearances at the State Thespian Conference and received a coveted spot for a full performance the past three years. This spring, McNicholas is fielding men’s and women’s lacrosse teams, becoming the only Archdiocesan coed high school in the city of Cincinnati to offer the sport. [ 2015] CHAMBER SPOTLIGHT
BOOMTOWN EXPANSIONS AND NEW BUSINESSES BOOST THE REGION’S ECONOMY MANY EXISTING ANDERSON BUSINESSES HAVE remodeled or expanded, and new property developments are in the works. All are expected to change the face of Greater Anderson for the better. “Developments like Dewey’s Pizza, the Towne Center plans and other new construction projects in the area are creating an environment that motivates existing small business owners to redevelop their own properties according to the township’s design guidelines,” notes Andrew Pappas, Anderson Township trustee and local business owner.
24 • Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce
These welcome changes can be attributed to a boom in new retail, health care, dining and entertainment options.
DINING A number of eateries have now moved into the area with great success. Anderson Pub & Grill, Arthur’s of Anderson and Jet’s Pizza have all been met with incredible enthusiasm from local patrons. The popularity of the announcement of a new Dewey’s Pizza in Anderson Township can’t be over-

stated. Residents quickly took to social media, with one Facebook post regarding the deal receiving more than 17,000 likes. Dewey’s Pizza has an anticipated opening date of summer 2015 and is anchoring a new retail establishment being developed by Core Resources along Beechmont Avenue at Witt Road. Silver Ladle is also part of the site and is slated to open in late July 2015. The restaurant specializes in fast-casual fare such as chili, burgers, hot sandwiches and soups. Krispy Kreme will also call Beechmont Avenue home sometime in early summer.
ENTERTAINMENT Victory Real Estate Investments announced plans to make sweeping changes to a portion of the Anderson Towne Center, beginning with the partial demolition of the former Kmart location. In its place will be a movie theater—a longtime desire of local residents—and an upscale fitness facility, along with additional retail space on
the extended new boulevard. The theater, with nine screens and 1,025 seats, will be operated by Carmike Cinemas Inc. out of Columbus, Ga. Initial plans call for a dine-in, first-run theater that serves beer, wine and mixed drinks. A full dining menu, in addition to standard fare such as popcorn, candy and soda, will be offered.
RETAIL The Kroger Marketplace in the Anderson Towne Center will expand its existing store with a plan for an additional 50,000 square feet, in addition to adding 18,000 square feet of specialty shops and parking to better serve customers. The proposed plan was approved by the Board of Trustees in December 2014, and work is set to begin early summer 2015.
HEART OF ANDERSON The Kroger and Anderson Towne Center expansions, along with the full Downtown Anderson plan,
focus on establishing the Beechmont Avenue Corridor as the economic and civic center of the township, with a pedestrian-friendly space in the heart of Anderson. The Downtown Anderson plan has garnered a lot of attention from county and state agencies. The plan won the Frank F. Ferris II Planning Award from the Hamilton County Regional Planning Commission and was awarded a $1.5 million grant from the State of Ohio’s Transportation Alternatives Grant Program.
MORE EXPANSION The boom in health care space continues as well. Mercy Health plans to complete a $70 million expansion and renovation of Mercy Health - Anderson Hospital in the second quarter of 2016. This expansion will add 60 private patient rooms, as well as expanding and renovating the intensive-care unit and the obstetrics and Family Birthing Center. “Patients will benefit from all private rooms, a new acute rehabilitation unit, the latest advancements in health-care design to provide a healing environment, and additional parking,” notes Nanette Bentley, director of public relations at Mercy Health. Mercy Health - Anderson has been named one of the top 100 hospitals in the nation a total of 10 times, the most of any hospital in Cincinnati. It has also been named one of the Top 50 heart hospitals in the nation. “Progress in Anderson Township is hitting on all fronts. Office space is filling up, medical space is booming, and new retail is popping up all over the place,” says Josh Gerth, Anderson Township trustee. “Take those developments along with new entertainment, new housing, renovations to our schools, and you have the makings of an economic infusion that we haven’t seen for a long time. It’s exciting to be part of it, and since all of our tax base is based on property value, it’s a welcome sign of growth. And we’re not done yet.” n
