SPECIAL ADVERTISING SUPPLEMENT

2017 Welcome Letter Springfield Township Board of Trustees Joseph Honerlaw, Trustee Gwen McFarlin, Trustee Mark Berning, Trustee Dan Berning, Fiscal Officer Michael Hinnenkamp, Township Administrator Chris Gilbert, Township Assistant Administrator

Dear Cincinnati Magazine Reader,

9150 Winton Rd. Cincinnati, OH 45231

Welcome to Springfield Township! As Springfield Township trustees, we are proud of our community and honored to be a part of this Cincinnati Magazine edition. So, where is Springfield Township? The answer is: Springfield Township is Center to it all! In this centermost point of Hamilton County, more than 36,000 people call Springfield Township home. Our community includes portions of seven public school districts and the area’s top-rated private academic choices. The heart of Springfield Township spans an area from North Bend Road through the county’s second largest park, Winton Woods. Our neighborhoods often provide individual identity and may be more familiar by name: Finneytown, Pleasant Run Farms, New Burlington, View Place, and Parkview Heights to name a few. As a predominantly residential community, we boast nearly 50 churches worshiping weekly and sharing various cultures in celebration through Greek festivals, German tradition, and African dance. We are home to the internationally known artist Charley Harper, the first LaRosa’s franchise restaurant, and St. Xavier High School, where many Olympic swimming medalists got their start. We are center to convenience with service at our core—dentists, dry cleaners, veterinarians, and hair stylists you know by name. We are a beautiful mix of urban and suburban lifestyles with a wide range of housing opportunities and a growing arts presence. Best yet, we are just a short drive away from enjoying the biggest sporting events, shopping destinations, entertainment venues, and restaurants the area has to offer. As you browse these pages, we extend our welcome and invite you to learn more about Springfield Township. We hope you, too, enjoy being Center to it all!

A Culturally Thriving Community

T

he beauty of Springfield Township’s rolling hills and forested green space has attracted art and nature lovers for many generations. Charley Harper, the famed modern artist who took his inspiration from nature, spent most of his life here and sketched the flora and fauna around his home. Springfield Township celebrates this heritage through organizations such as ArtsConnect, a nonprofit community collaboration that seeks to enhance residents’ quality of life through the arts and local events. In addition, planned developments such as Centre Pointe Preserve will feature art, green space, and outdoor recreation as singular elements to a lifestyle that is centered on beauty and nature.

A

rt and cultural awareness enhance the quality of life in a community, and Springfield Township is committed to offering its residents enriching opportunities in these areas. ArtsConnect, the township’s nonprofit arts and events organization, seeks to foster community connectedness and psychological well-being through classes, events, and volunteer projects focused on the arts. Created in 2012, ArtsConnect allows the township to rely less heavily on tax dollars to fund arts programming and opens opportunities for sustainable resources to improve access to the arts, create a better community experience, and grow economic development. With dozens of classes and events each year, ArtsConnect brings together people from all walks of life to create and learn as they craft individual projects or enjoy the

music and imagery of other artists through various concerts, live performances, and events. Some of the unique programming generated by ArtsConnect includes the ArtsConnect Kids Camp. This summer camp empowers kids to make a difference by using art to explore cultural differences and environmental stewardship through a variety of creatively inspired projects. There is also a live-show series, ArtsConnect Cabaret, with a varied offering of theater performances, accompanied by food, as well as the ArtLocal art show in November. Additional events include a summer concert series, family entertainment series, WinterFest in December, and father/daughter and mother/son dances. Throughout the year, ArtsConnect offers art classes at the Springfield Township Community Arts Center. The center

includes an art room with a kiln, meeting space, plus a library, wood shop, and gift shop. Classes are offered in ceramics, watercolors, painting, sewing, drawing, stained glass, woodworking, and music.

2017 Growing the Arts The Harpers’ Hometown

R

enowned conservationist and modern artist Charley Harper and his family lived in Springfield Township for nearly 50 years, taking inspiration from the plants and wildlife they encountered on their fiveacre estate. The Harpers built a contemporary home and studio in Finneytown with abundant floor-to-ceiling windows to enjoy the stunning views of woods, creeks, and animals. Charley was also a frequent visitor to nearby Winton Woods, taking his son Brett on excursions to the park to sketch plants. Creating art was a family affair for the Harpers, and Charley’s wife, Edie, and son, Brett, were also accomplished artists in their own right. Brett still uses his father’s studio to work on projects related to the promotion of Charley’s work. Although Charley Harper died in 2007, his legacy of appreciating nature and lovingly recording it lives on through his many paintings. Brett Harper says Charley found Springfield Township to be a place “where his creativity could flourish.” His paintings are known for their singular style that focuses on shapes and colors and injects whimsy into the serious study of nature. “He

loved the natural world and made people smile,” Brett says. Today, Springfield Township celebrates the Harper family legacy through an annual display of Charley Harper’s art on banners hung along Winton Road in the spring and fall, highlighting many of his well-known works. In addition, a Charley Harper Museum & Arts Center is a concept proposed for the Center Pointe Preserve project, a mixed-use development that will take advantage of a wooded setting to offer residents ample outdoor recreation and picturesque views. If built there or elsewhere in the township, the new museum and event center would be used to showcase the Harpers’ art and provide space for art classes, artist studios, and a theater in partnership with ArtsConnect. It is envisioned as a creative space, both indoors and out, where all would feel welcome. Brett says his family enjoyed living in Springfield Township, where they found the quiet seclusion they needed to pursue their artistic dreams. He hopes that residents of the township feel a connection to Charley and the Harper family when they view works from their lifelong careers.

set into 54 acres of wooded green space between Winton and North Bend roads. The property has been the subject of careful consideration for years and is now the focal point for what is expected to be one of the area’s premier “live, work, and play”

developments. The new Center Pointe Preserve will showcase the beauty of Springfield Township in a setting that highlights green space, mature trees, and outdoor recreation. It will feature a distinctive design that emphasizes walkability and community gathering spaces such as art centers, offices, restaurants, and an outdoor amphitheater. The planned mixed-use development allows for a range of housing options built with sustainable design in mind, providing a unique environment for those seeking high amenity living that’s center to it all. Natural open space will be maximized, with a premium placed on mature trees and wooded land to connect the different uses, giving the community a secluded, park-like atmosphere. Center Pointe Preserve will be a legacy community, setting Springfield Township apart as a destination for those who want to live or work in close connection to nature, nearby proximity to friendly neighbors, and select community retail options.

Springfield Township’s success is also due to the vision of its people—from those early movers and shakers such as Obed Hussey, the inventor of the reaper, to renowned artist Charley Harper, who made his longtime home here, to today’s administrators, who see future goals coming together in Center Pointe Preserve—a vision that will

strengthen the region’s identity for generations to come. The quality lifestyle of this thriving residential community is bolstered by acres of green space and natural beauty, well represented by neighborhood parks and Winton Woods, with its miles of trails and numerous ways to tap into outdoor fun. The township

also excels at convenience. A wealth of local services means it’s just a quick trip to see a neighborhood doctor or dentist, a specialty retailer, or other professional. These advantages, combined with an abundance of desirable housing stock set in more than a dozen distinct neighborhoods, make Springfield Township an exceptional place to live. Many Springfield Township residents choose to work where they live and play, running businesses in the community. Homegrown establishments include everything from restaurants and specialty shops to professional services and more. Many businesses have spanned decades, such as W.H. Forrest Lytle has also been in business more than 50 years offering landscaping and arborist supplies.

ton Road is one of the oldest parishes in Cincinnati. Every year the church holds the Panegyri Festival, a celebration of Greek culture and food. The festival is a highlight of the summer season in Springfield Township and draws people from miles around for the games, rides, food, and performances of Greek dancing. The township is also home to four Catholic parishes, more than six Baptist churches, and dozens of other churches representing numerous faiths. Each year, local ministries, churches, agencies, and civic groups come together for the Faith Day, Pray It Forward community celebration to remember and support those who have experienced extreme and catastrophic loss. The event is organized by Greater Emanuel Apostolic Temple, a dynamic church on West Galbraith Road. Each summer, Schützenfest is hosted by the Catholic Kolping Society of Cincin-

nati, a charitable group founded more than 100 years ago by Fr. Adolph Kolping. This 500-year-old German tradition celebrates excellent marksmanship. The Springfield Township event includes a community festival with food, games, and entertainment held on the grounds of the Kolping Center, an event and athletic facility on Mill Road.

Community Engagement A vibrant community results from involved citizens. Many neighborhoods in the township hold Fourth of July festivities, and the township is home to a variety of civic groups, including neighborhood civic associations and local business associations. Community athletic organizations provide youth and adult sports opportunities in soccer, baseball, softball, basketball, and football. In addition, the area is home to many youth clubs, such as scout troops.

Diversity Makes a Neighborhood

S

pringfield Township is a mosaic of neighborhoods representing some of the best places to live in Cincinnati. Township residents often associate “place” with their neighborhood—it’s what they are proud of and claim as anything but cookie cutter. The community and its surrounding housing markets are among the most diverse household profiles in the Greater Cincinnati region. Diversity is Springfield Township’s strength, and those that live there are proud of it! Springfield Township’s 36,000 residents share the benefits of being center to it all in a variety of distinct neighborhoods spanning a wide range of housing types and prices. Housing ranges from contemporary to historic, with an exceptional selection of mid-century homes. Tree-lined streets, well-maintained yards, and friendly neighbors are what you’ll see within the township’s many unique neighborhoods where lifestyle, price, and location make any definition of the “American Dream” possible.

Modern Amenities

Newer homes in Springfield Township subdivisions such as The Meadows of Wright Farm, Conrad Meadows, Whitetail Meadows, and Adams Ridge offer spacious floor plans, large closets for plenty of storage, beautiful yards, and multicar garages. Unlike most suburban communities, mature trees and large lots that provide a truly parklike atmosphere surround these modern amenity homes.

Perfect for First-time Homebuyers

With the largest choice of school districts available to one community, it’s no wonder so many families find their first home in Springfield Township. Finneytown graduates of the ’80s and ’90s stay to raise their children here. Winton Woods School District’s designation as one of the best com-

munities for music education by the NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) Foundation attracts families with a passion for music. Well-built Mid-Century Modern homes provide the perfect framework for DIY trendsetters to add their final touches.

Senior Living at Its Best Leave the yardwork behind and enjoy Springfield Township’s premier condominium lifestyle in the communities of Bridgecreek and Central Park. Senior living communities such as StoneBridge at Winton Woods, Christian Villages at Mt. Healthy, and Brookdale provide unique retirement living options surrounded by acres of trees and beautiful scenery, maintenance-free living, social programs, and various levels of care. Patio homes will be an amenity when the Center Pointe Preserve property is complete.

A Room with a View

With an impressive collection of mid-century homes, Springfield Township is a house hunter’s dream. Due to their family-friendly design elements and spacious yards, Mid-Century Modern homes have become one of the most sought-after styles in home buying today, says Cincinnati mid-century real estate expert Susan Rissover. Springfield Township is one of Hamilton County’s prime locations for this architectural style with hundreds of options, including ranch-style homes and properties designed by famed architects Benjamin Dombar and James Alexander. The wooded hillsides and flowing creeks of the township were the perfect backdrop for this nature-inspired design aesthetic that flourished in the 1950s and ’60s and was influenced by the work of Frank Lloyd Wright. Large windows to take in forested views and usable, open floor plans suited to family living are highlights of these homes. Today’s young families and empty-nesters appreciate these features as much as the families of 50 years ago did, leading to a renewed interest in mid-century style.

Covered Bridge Rd., just off Miles Rd. One of the oldest covered bridges in Ohio, the Jediah Hill Covered Bridge is a step back into a time when travel was by horse and buggy and Springfield Township was a bucolic collection of farms and settlements. The original bridge dates to 1850 and spans the West Fork of the Mill Creek. Although it has been repaired several times due to ice and weather damage, its queen post truss design still retains enough of its original character to be included on the National Register of Historic Places.

110 Compton Rd., near intersection with Springfield Pke. This renovated barn is set on 35 acres and dates back to 1898. Centennial Barn now earns its keep as a modern event facility for weddings, meetings, and parties, but it retains the rustic character and unique details that mark it as a historic building. It remains part of the St. Clare Convent campus and is owned by Franciscan Ministries, Inc.

f choice is what you’re looking for, Springfield Township families have access to seven local public school districts as well as multiple private schools. These include top performing schools that offer students the chance to grow and learn in challenging and supportive environments.

St. Xavier High School

One of the region’s oldest and most distinguished high schools, St. Xavier High School is the largest of the 35 all-male high schools in the country operated by the Society of Jesus. The school, with roughly 1,600 students, is known for top academic and athletic programs, frequently earning national recognition. Each year, 99 percent of the school’s graduates go on to fouryear colleges, and roughly 80 percent are admitted to their first-choice school. Notable graduates include three Olympic athletes as well as numerous professional athletes, state and national politicians, and distinguished authors and actors. St. Xavier originally shared facilities with what is now known as Xavier University. In the early 1960s it moved to its current location on North Bend Road. Today, the

110-acre campus features a mock courtroom, 11 computer labs, and a 23,000volume library. The school’s athletic facilities are comparable to many found at the collegiate level and include a new football stadium, a large natatorium for swimming, as well as fields for soccer and baseball. Known as the Bombers, St. Xavier is the home to 17 Division I teams, many of which have won state titles.

Finneytown High School, part of Finneytown Secondary Campus Finneytown High School is known as a school small enough to offer the feel of an extended family, but large enough to give students rich opportunities. The school’s

college attendance rate is more than 95 percent, and the class of 2016 received roughly $4.5 million in college financial aid. The Finneytown School District strives to be an “embracing community where innovation guides how learning occurs.” The high school offers 12 Advanced Placement courses. More than 42 percent of students challenge themselves to take AP course work. Multiple opportunities are available for students to explore the arts with special classes in everything from music, glass work, photography, and media to design and digital electronics. More than half of the high school’s students participate in a variety of sports, which includes competitive programs in football, soccer, basketball, baseball, swimming, cross country, tennis, volleyball, golf, and more.
