On behalf of the State of Ohio, my wife, Fran, and I welcome you to the 45th annual Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance, one of the longest running automotive celebrations of its kind in the country. It will host an incredible range of luxurious automobiles from all eras, and the event’s collectors are once again ready to impress.
Ohio is proud to host this internationally recognized event, which showcases some of the rarest and historically significant automobiles and motorcycles in the world. This year’s show’s featured marque is “75 Years of Porsche.”
Since the 1890s, Ohio has played a major role in the automobile industry: from Charles Kettering’s innovations to Ford’s Model T assembly plant in Cincinnati to today’s modern factories producing high-quality parts and automobiles across the state.
The proceeds from the Cincinnati Concours support juvenile arthritis assistance programs of the Arthritis Foundation, benefitting the many children and their families in the Southern Ohio region who live daily with this debilitating disease.
We hope you enjoy your visit to Ault Park – one of Cincinnati’s many beautiful city parks – to view the spectacular vehicles on display. We thank you for supporting this grand event. To those visiting from out of state, it is our hope that you will return to the Queen City and the great State of Ohio.
Very respectfully yours,

Dear Friends,
On behalf of the great City of Cincinnati, I am thrilled to welcome you to the 45th annual Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance. The Queen City is honored to host this storied event that reaches beyond our region and throughout the automotive world. We are proud to welcome car enthusiasts, owners, and spectators from across the globe for this long running tradition of automotive excellence!
This year’s featured marque, “75 Years of Porsche,” is sure to delight the crowd. It will showcase the world-renowned brand in the stunning gardens of our very own Ault Park. Also featured will be the 70th anniversary of the iconic Corvette and 85 years of the VW Beetle. The event’s exhibitors are once again poised to impress.
Beyond the show, the Concours brings essential awareness to the fight against juvenile arthritis through its long-standing financial support of the Arthritis Foundation. These donations support family camps and assistance programs led by the Cincinnati Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation. We as a city are grateful for this continued advocacy and civic contribution.
While you enjoy the Concours, I hope you’ll take advantage of the opportunity to further explore our vibrant city and the diversity of our 52 distinct neighborhoods. Each community has its own rich history, culture, and personality. Together, we come together for one unified, proud, unique Cincinnati. From downtown to College Hill, from the Westside to the Eastside, you will find stunning architecture, exciting entertainment, and energetic residents ready to welcome you. We love this city and we can’t wait to show you why.
Thank you for joining the 45th Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance. I’m confident that you will have an amazing time, and we can’t wait to welcome you back again soon.
Sincerely,
AFTAB PUREVAL Mayor, City of CincinnatiWelcome to the Concours
Welcome to the 45th anniversary of the Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance featuring the 75th anniversary of Porsche. This year’s show is filled with iconic automobiles that we all know and love: from the VW Beetle, the “people’s car,” to “America’s sports car,” the Corvette, along with Porsche, whose racing cars were often referred to as “giant killers” due to their ability to outrun much higher horsepower cars. As you walk the field, you will be filled with visions of shining paint and chrome and the smell of luxurious leather. The field is packed with the history of some of the most coveted vehicles American, European, and Asian manufacturers and designers produced.
Did you know that Porsche and Volkswagen are kindred spirits? Starting with the earliest Porsche 356 pre-A of the late ’40s to the late ’70s, many Porsches shared parts and engineering with VW. Fast-forward to today’s 200 mile per hour hyper-cars that continue to capture the spirit of innovation that is the hallmark of the Porsche marque. Comparing the early VWs with today’s recently discontinued models gives us a snapshot of the post-war automotive scene. But that’s not all—the show field will be a mixture of antique, vintage, classic, exotic and racing cars with names such as Packard, Locomobile, Facel Vega, Siata, and Ferrari. Let’s not forget the collection of motorcycles, with brands like Zundap, Laverda, and Vincent.
Once you get through the 24 classes of cars and motorcycles, be sure to take advantage of our automotive-themed art show and head over to the Craft Beer Garden for a cool one. As you know, our purpose is twofold: to produce the highest quality concours that keeps attendees and car owners coming back year after year and to support the efforts of the Arthritis Foundation to improve the lives of children afflicted with arthritis.
Enjoy the show!
CARL ISEMAN Cincinnati Concours ChairmanLetter from the Board Chairman
Welcome to our 45th anniversary!
The Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance has evolved over the years from a casual gathering at the Williams estate to one of Cincinnati’s premier annual events and a nationally recognized Concours. We have also grown into a significant fund-raiser for the Arthritis Foundation’s Juvenile Arthritis (JA) programs.
For this vitally important aspect of our show, we wish to thank our generous sponsors including EXAIR, Porsche of the Village, Cincinnati Magazine, and all of our many volunteers, spectators, and, most importantly, the car exhibitors that make this wonderful show possible.
A great deal of time and effort goes into preparing a vehicle for a high quality Concours such as ours, and we would like to acknowledge the time and expense that the owners have contributed to make our show one of the best in the country.
The involvement and support of all of our sponsors helps to ensure the quality and profitability of this important fund-raising event benefiting juvenile arthritis programs, the main benefactor being the Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance JA Family Camp, where local children dealing with the challenges of arthritis can spend time together and enjoy just being kids.
In addition to the cars, please take this time to enjoy the beauty of Cincinnati’s wonderful Ault Park and the Will Sherman Automotive Art Show on the main field. The Cincinnati Park Board makes this breathtaking venue available for our use each year and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
Whichever aspect of the Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance that you participate in, your support goes to help the Arthritis Foundation reach its mission of finding the cause and cure for the more than 100 forms of rheumatic diseases. Your support is vital to the Arthritis Foundation’s endeavors to reach those goals.

From the Chief Judge
Welcome to the 45th Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance.
Our judging team of more than 50 highly-credentialed specialists is delighted with this year’s field of spectacular examples of automotive design and engineering. The judges are tasked to choose the best entries in each of the 23 classes, based on condition and authenticity as originally built. Additionally, elegance of design, presence among the class, historical significance, and uniqueness of engineering are significant factors in the final decisions for Best of Class and additional class awards. The Best of Class trophies are unique to our show—handmade art glass—and no two exactly alike. The judging team is also responsible for selecting the winners of the many special awards, particularly the two Best of Show trophies, the first from the traditional classes and the second selected from the sports and racing classes. The unique Best of Show trophies are exclusive custom art designs by Cincinnati’s revered Rookwood Pottery.
We are especially grateful for the efforts of all exhibitors to prepare and display their magnificent vehicles to delight the public and support our worthy cause.
Thank you all for coming,

Tackling Arthritis Through JA Family Camp
Our partnership with the Arthritis Foundation benefits local families. Here’s one mom’s testimony.
“If I only knew then what I know now” is a phrase that often comes to mind when thinking about having a child who has been diagnosed and living with Juvenile Arthritis (JA) for the last six years. In the beginning, the despair, fear, and loneliness were overwhelming. It’s hard to imagine what your child’s future will look like, especially with the constant appointments, tests, medications, medical treatments, physical therapy, etc. The list is endless and at times, all-consuming.
As a parent of a JA child, you would do anything to take the “invisible” pain away from them. Though my child may look and act like any other normal, healthy child her age, what she goes through on a daily basis is anything but normal. And while we are fortunate and thankful to have a large support system of family and friends, none of them can truly relate to the situations we face daily in regards to this disease. Unless you have a child with Juvenile Arthritis or any other pediatric rheumatologic disease, it’s hard to understand the complexities of this journey. If I had only known then what I know now about the amount of resources that would become available to us, I would have seen that the community that would eventually become part of our everyday lives would give so much hope and support as we navigated our new normal.
Our family is very thankful to the Arthritis Foundation and the Cincinnati Concours Foundation for providing such resources as The Cincinnati Concours JA Family Camp that connects us to other families just like ours. There are approximately 300,000 families in the U.S. who face the realities of this chronic disease and being able to meet some of them, hear their stories, and support each other gives life to what often can feel like an isolating situation. Knowing now that we are not alone in this, has given new meaning to our arthritis journey.
Thank you, Cincinnati Concours Foundation, for supporting our JA kiddos and for providing light in what can often feel like a dark situation.
Sincerely,
Jessica, Proud Mom of GraceHagerty Youth Judging Program
Reaching the 12th year of our Partnership for Youth Judging with Hagerty, we proudly continue one of the largest youth judging teams in the country. The opportunity to offer this valuable mentoring program, so generously sponsored by Hagerty, will play an important role in helping Cincinnati Concours reach many more historic milestones through the involvement of new generations of enthusiasts.
Hagerty provides the official judging gear, including T-shirts, hats, and score cards, and helps teach our young judges about the cars and evaluation criteria. A small group of cars are preselected to be scored by the youth judges, who also present awards to their top three vehicles. Participants have the opportunity to interact with car owners, carefully inspect each car, and make the determination of their favorites based on the scoring criteria.
Our chief judge Kip Wasenko will make a special presentation to our youth judging team. Kip draws from his 40-year career with General Motors Design to share his perspective on car design.
This program has room for 25 children, ages 8–15. If you know of a child who may be interested for next year, please contact the Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance Foundation office at (513) 321-1951 or info@ ohioconcours.com.

History of the Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance
45 Years of Automotive Excellence
The inaugural Concours d’Elegance was held at the estate of William and Helen Williams in June 1978. The Concours was the vision of Helen Williams, who wanted to do something in honor of her good friend, Bill Rudd, who was afflicted with rheumatoid arthritis. A small group of eight committee members, in cooperation with the Arthritis Foundation Ohio River Valley Chapter produced the first event.
After 18 years hosted at several locations in the Greater Cincinnati area, the Concours adopted historic Ault Park as its permanent venue in 1996. The annual show day was also changed at this time from Father’s Day to the second Sunday in June.
In 2006, the Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, was established to manage and produce the Concours. All proceeds continue to benefit the Arthritis Foundation, with a focus on supporting their Juvenile Arthritis (JA) programs. Subsequently, the Concours was named primary sponsor of the JA Family Camp.
Now in its 45th year, the Cincinnati Concours is the longest running Concours event outside of the West Coast, and fourth oldest overall in the United States. Along with associated weekend and year-round enthusiast events, the Concours attracts automobile collectors nationwide as well as from Europe, Canada, and South America.
Ovation features luxury homes with magnificent views of the Ohio River and Cincinnati skyline, secure parking, private and direct elevator access, and best-in-class appliances, amidst a community along the boardwalk enriched with walking trails, restaurants, hotels and more.
Cincinnati’s famed Rookwood Pottery was commissioned to design and produce unique new Best of Show trophies for 2013. The custom tile design is sculpted in clay to form a mold for the final product. Rookwood’s glaze chemists worked with the artist to develop a different color scheme for each of the two trophies. Each tile is hand painted, giving every trophy its own unique characteristics. Sponsored by CCI Design, the tile evolved when the name of the concours changed to “Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance.” In 2019, a third trophy was added for the annual Honored Collector.
Custom hand-blown glass trophies were commissioned and introduced in 2022 for Best of Class and Best of Featured Theme awards. The unique design by Daniel Schreiber of Columbus, Ohio, celebrates classic car styling and distinct quality of vehicles worthy of bestof-class recognition. Each trophy is sponsored by loyal supporters of the concours.
Connecting Great Cars, Great People, and Great Causes
The Car That Could
The 2023 Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance celebrates 75 years of Porsche.
By Steve SmithWith Porsche widely regarded as one of the world’s most successful automotive brands, it’s hard to envision that just 75 years ago the German firm’s entire operation consisted of 200 people working in a converted sawmill in Gmund, Austria. The visionary engineering prowess of its founder, Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, combined with the style and business acumen of his son, Ferry, the brand sprang from the shadow of WWII and built its reputation by hand, one car at a time. The 2023 Cincinnati Concours celebrates this automotive underdog story, featuring “75 Years of Porsche” as its central showcase.
Innovative Design
From the outset in 1948, Porsche did things differently, most notably designing a lightweight and aerodynamic vehicle powered by a small-displacement, high-revving engine placed in the rear. This design philosophy was a sharp contrast from the typical existing sports car, which featured hulking 8-, 10 and 12-cylinder brutes pumping out big horsepower forward of the driver.
“The old Porsches are tiny little cars that are easy to underestimate, but they have an elegance of purpose about them and are such a thrill to drive,” says Brian Schroeder, a local graphic artist who has owned a wide array of vintage automobiles, including several varieties of Porsches.
In the company’s early days Porsche proved the mettle of its design concept in competition where it gained a reputation as a giant killer in endurance races and hill-climb events across Europe. While not particularly powerful, Porsches made their mark by being light, nimble and bullet-proof.
The company was quick to integrate lessons from the track into the cars it made for the street. Take, for example, the 1957 356 Coupe presented by Cincinnati owner Stan Yarrish. You’ll note the unusual position of the ignition switch on the driver’s left—a nod to a time when race drivers had to run to their cars for a standing start to begin a race. Putting the ignition on the left allowed the driver to start the car via a key with the left hand, whilst putting the car into first gear with the right hand.
The VW Beetle: Porsche’s Diminutive Forefather
It’s altogether fitting that alongside the collection of high-dollar, ultra-rare Porsches at this year’s Concours, will be a special display of its more ubiquitous forefather, the Volkswagen Beetle.
Dr. Ferdinand Porsche designed the Beetle in the late 1930s at the behest of the German government, which wanted an inexpensive, mass-produced “people’s car,” i.e. Volkswagen, to help motor around the growing German economy. Ten years later, after WWII, Porsche used the same simple design concepts—lightweight, aerodynamic, rear-engine—to create his now iconic sportscar. Although the Beetle was initially commissioned by a sinister regime, it has grown into one of the world’s most beloved, longest enduring, and most widely sold vehicles.
The classic Beetle was produced continuously from 1938 to 2003, with new versions then offered again from 1997 through 2019. Concours attendees will get to see examples ranging the Beetles’ full history, from Richard Reischman’s original 1951 Type-
2023 CINCINNATI CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE
The Corvette: American Made, World Renown
The term everyday supercar may seem oxymoronic, but the Corvette has made those words ring true since 1953, when Chevrolet first rolled out its fiberglass sportscar prototype. Still today, 70 years later, the Corvette is singular in its ability to put world-class performance within greater reach of the average car enthusiast.
“Even after 70 years, Corvette still makes hearts race and kids dream of the open road,” says Steve Majoros, vice president, Chevrolet marketing. For example, Concours attendees can get a close look at Craig Kellogg’s 2023 70th Anniversary Edition Corvette Z06. It boasts special styling details, such as distinct wheels with commemorative center caps, 70th Anniversary Edition exterior badging and logo seats, and a custom luggage set with red stitching.
Of course, it’s the distinctive American-made V8 engine under the hood that have always given Corvettes their unique appeal, a blend of muscle-car grunt packaged in a sleek, race-inspired body. Kellogg’s 2023 Z06 boasts a 5.5-liter V8, which produces 670 horsepower and pushes the car from zero to 60 mph in 2.6 seconds. Those are incredible, race-car level stats for a car that can be driven on public roads.
And if it’s purebred racecars you are after, Cincinnati is home to several legendary race-winning Corvettes, a few of which will be on the Concours display field for close inspection.
For example, the bold red, white and blue livery of The Auto Place collection’s 1972 Corvette racer is sure to draw lots of attention. The car competed in the hands of privateer brothers John and Burt Greenwood, talented engineer/driver brothers who helped Corvette make its name in prestigious international and domestic sportscar races, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Speaking of prestigious victories, Cincinnati’s Jim Jaeger will be displaying his 1957 race-prepped Corvette, which won its class at the 1957 12 Hours of Sebring. Jaeger is also displaying his ultra-rare and historic 1963 Corvette Z06, the first example of when famed Chevrolet engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov created the Z06 designation by taking a stock Corvette and customized it for the track.
Porsche Today
Today, of course, Porsche is a major player in the luxury car market, employing more than 36,000 people from its Stuttgart, Germany, headquarters and offering a full range of SUVs, four-door performance sedans, fully electric-powered vehicles and, of course, the enduring 911 sportscar.
Check out Mike Valentine’s 2023 Taycan GTS Sport Turismo for an upclose representation of modern-day Porsche. With 590 horsepower and a 0-60mph time of 3.5 seconds, the fully electric GTS Sport Turismo is a wagon that can get you to and from the grocery store faster than anyone else. Practical yet nimble, sexy but reliable; turns out not much has changed at Porsche in 75 years after all.
In Memoriam: Robert “Bob” Ingram
Bob Ingram, Porsche enthusiast and longtime Concours d’Elegance supporter, died on March 24, 2023, at the age of 80. He and his wife, Jeanie, had assembled a collection of 80 Porsche models spanning seven decades, including a 1961 356 B Carrera GTL Abarth, which won First in Class at Pebble Beach in 2019. The father of two shared his passion for the sports car brand with his sons, Cam and Rory, who are also in the business of collecting and restoring cars in North Carolina.
Gene and Sally Perkins
Gene Perkins still owns the car he drove in high school—a 1940 Ford coupe. That’s unusual for most of us, but it’s extraordinary for a guy who graduated in 1954. But while he still has a soft spot for his Ford, he’s a dyed-in-the-wool Packard devotee. So it should be no surprise that the sentimental favorite in his Greenwood, Indiana, garage is a 1932 Series 8 model, built four years before he was born.
“I bought it for $285 and it’s a beauty,” he says. “It’s so light and fun to drive with its V8 85 horse engine. I love driving it around town.”
Gene says he’s owned at least 50 Packards in the seven decades he’s been collecting vintage automobiles. He was born with a passion for cars, growing up with two brothers in a small Indiana town where, he laughs, he learned to tell the make and model of a car just by its sound. He and his brothers paid $25 for their first car when he was just 14 years old. His mother made seat covers out of feed sacks for their standard black 1931 Model A two door coupe and they styled it by painting the wheel covers red.
A few years later, Gene remembers traveling with his mother to a department store in Indianapolis and spotting a Duesenberg in a nearby alley. “I had never seen a Duesenberg in my life and, man, was I taken with it,” he recalls. “I just had to have it.”
And he did. He bought the automobile and held on to it for 43 years before buying another and holding it for 17 years.
In his early 20s, he and a friend traveled to a Rolls Royce dealership to look at the new models. He remembers it was a dealership like none he had ever seen. Terracotta floors, Oriental rugs, salesmen dressed in black tuxedos. He appreciated the Rolls models but, while there, he heard about a 1938 Packard 1605 Super Eight convertible sedan for sale in Chicago. He had to see it.
It was a beautiful vehicle. Cream exterior with a dark blue leather interior, ox-yoke shaped grill, shovel nose. And despite the frigid March weather, the test drive was a dream come true. But when the owner said he wanted $2,200 for it, Gene hesitated. He didn’t have that kind of money. This probably wouldn’t happen now, but back in 1957, when perhaps people were more trusting, it did. The owner agreed to let Gene drive the car back to Indianapolis and get his finances together. If he couldn’t, the owner said, he’d come and pick the car up. “I raised my four kids with that car,” he says now, “and sold it 15 years later for $10,000.”
The buyer was J. Reynolds DuPont of chemical company fame, who Gene says told him he had to have it because he had courted his wife in that car.
Gene can turn heads on a Sunday afternoon, cruising around central Indiana in one of his many spit-polished classic cars. A noted custom homebuilder, Gene turned one particular head 30 years ago—his now-wife, Sally, whose condo he was building. She caught the classic car bug herself and joined the board of the Classic Car Club of America in 2002, eventually becoming only the second female president in its 70-year existence.
Sally is perhaps best known for her lovingly restored 1935 Figoni Delahaye 135M, which she and Gene purchased at auction in 2000. “It was a pretty car,” she remembers, “but we didn’t know much about its history.”
After doing a little research, Sally got in touch with Delahaye expert Andre Varcourt, who flew to Indiana from France to inspect the vehicle in detail. A few months later, after taking dozens of measurements and consulting with other experts, Varcourt confirmed that it was one of only four 1935 models that had been handcrafted the year before Giuseppe Figoni and Ovidio Falaschi began their storied partnership. It had been “lost” for years, but Varcourt could confirm that it was the
same vehicle that had been shown at the 1935 Paris Salon.
Sally decided to ship the car overseas for restoration because, she explains, “we wanted to be sure it had authentic French replacement parts.”
The brown paint job was restored to its original yellowand-black and the interior glistened with its yellow seats and high-end appointments. The Art Deco lines catch anyone’s eyes, generating wild cheers at the Pebble Beach Concours in 2016, where it took best of show. It did the same the following year here in Cincinnati.
Sally and Gene sold it at auction in Scottsdale last year and, she admits, she misses “Dela.” “It was my favorite car,” she says wistfully, although now that they’re restoring a 1932 Auburn boattail speedster, she admits there might be a tie for her favorite.
Gene typically judges at the Concours show, but not this year. “I’m bringing my herd with me,” he laughs.
As Honored Collector, he and his wife are showing multiple vehicles on the grounds’ upper level. Chances are if you see a Packard, you’ll probably find Gene somewhere nearby.

Jim Ibold Preservation Award
A. James Ibold, known to most as “Jimmie,” became enthralled with pre-war Alfa Romeos after watching local mechanic Walker Moeller maintain an Alfa 308 for Indianapolis racing. Jimmie spent 50 years preserving these cars as they came to him and never stinted on anything needed mechanically. Cosmetically, he did all he could to maintain the cars in their original condition. Jimmie loved these cars and drove them often for as long as he was able. We were fortunate to have Jimmie display these cars at Ault Park many times. The Jim Ibold Preservation Award is now named in his honor.
