also continued to expand its presence by extending the downtown market through October. We are so lucky to have a dedicated team running our market and it’s great to have them downtown an extra month of the year. Be sure to discover what’s new from unique vendors and farmers across the Tri-State every Thursday afternoon through October 26th!
Pet Food also located along Camargo Road.
Daley Design Build continues to renovate its new home next to Madeira Dentistry, expanding their home building and remodeling services into the Madeira area. Meanwhile, on Laurel Avenue, Legendary Custom Homes is currently building out Laurel Crossing, a 10-lot housing development that includes a mix of options on Laurel and Euclid. We look forward to welcoming new neighbors to these beautifully crafted homes in the near future!
When I sat down to write this letter one year ago, I believed 2022 was going to be the best year yet to discover everything Madeira has to offer. While I believe I was right, I’m even more excited about 2023 and the amazing things happening in our community that are going to make this year even more exciting!
The City of Madeira continues to focus its efforts on our downtown business district. The long-awaited SwingLine restaurant has been welcomed with open arms by the community and quickly become a family-friendly destination.
Re-development of Miami Avenue will certainly be the theme of the year, with reconstruction plans in the works for later this year that will include the widening of sidewalks, the “dieting” of traffic lanes, and the addition of dining areas along the way, capped by a fresh re-pave.
We also welcomed several new business additions to our downtown this past year. Bird Country opened just before the holiday season across from Coffee Please while The Music Salon made the move to the same plaza with an expanded space and new “Guitar Spa and Concierge” on-site. Just up the road, Hill Financial Strategies has moved in next to Evolo Design.
Our weekly Farmers’ Market has
Madeira officially added its name to the list of Tri-State DORA communities in 2022 with an official kick-off in October. Our DORA district spans Miami Avenue from Camargo to Euclid and includes seven unique destinations: A Tavola, Ferrari’s, SwingLine, Madeira Inn, and Piazza Discepoli in the downtown area along with Ali’s Bar & Grill and newly opened Sushi Monk on Camargo Road. Our DORA is in effect daily from 11AM to 11PM giving you plenty of time to grab your favorite beer, wine, or spirit, and discover a new shop!
The Chamber is thrilled to launch Second Saturday live music events this year. Join us the second Saturday of May through October for live music starting at 3PM. Stay in the loop on DORA events at MadeiraChamber. com/DORA.
If you haven’t explored Madeira in a while, you may be surprised at all the other new developments around town.
Dog owners rejoice—Central Bark is coming to Camargo Road this summer, with daycare, boarding, and grooming services for your pup. Central Bark joins a fantastic list of places to care for your four-legged friends, along with Camargo Animal Hospital and Argo’s
Speaking of Laurel, Haven Modern Hair Studio has moved to Madeira, making the move from Oakley to 7800 Laurel Avenue next to Camargo Trading. Amanda and her team invite you to “Be welcomed. Be pampered. Be yourself.” and we’re excited to have them here.
Discover it ALL in Madeira
I truly mean it when I say there really hasn’t been a better time to discover everything Madeira has to offer! From restaurants to coffee shops, retail shops, fitness studios, attorneys, insurance brokers, financial planners, healthcare providers, and everything you need for your home. Along with great schools, great parks, and great people, our great businesses really help make Madeira a special place.
David Peterson, Executive DirectorTake a glimpse into the past at the Madeira Historical Society, a local destination that has drawn in visitors from all over the world. Dedicated to the discovery and preservation of the area’s history, the historical society is located within the Miller House, a Sears catalog home. Visit for a tour of a 1950s-era time capsule house, complete with vintage appliances in the kitchen, an original television set from the early 20th century, and an oldfashioned sewing machine. Nearby, be sure to check out the well-preserved Marietta & Cincinnati Rail Road Company rail tracks, located just a short walk from the Miller House.
You don’t have to look far to figure out why Cincinnati’s families gravitate toward Madeira—because the headlines say it all. In the past few years alone, the city has been ranked one of the nation’s best places to raise kids, one of the best places to live in Ohio, and the best place to live in the Greater Cincinnati Area. But there’s so much more to the story of Madeira.
Incorporated in 1910, the city was originally developed to sit along
a bustling rail line running between Cincinnati and West Virginia. Today, it maintains that same small town feel while indulging residents with proximity to big-city amenities. A quick, 12mile trip down Interstate 71 will take you to downtown Cincinnati (which is also accessible via Metro bus service), but you’ll quickly find that you’ve got everything you need within Madeira’s city limits.
In the central business district, nestled between the main arteries of Madeira, you’ll discover more than 150 retail and service businesses, from stylish boutiques and specialty food stores to charming coffee shops and pizzarias. Easily accessible from nearly every corner of Madeira, the central business district is perfectly walkable with its wide sidewalks and tree-lined streets. Looking for more? The north end of the city offers a second retail district, full of additional opportunities for shopping and dining.
Friendly faces are never far away in a tight-knit community like Madeira.
And thanks to the city’s always-full calendar of local events, there’s always an opportunity to get together for family-friendly fun. Every Thursday from May through December, discover the Madeira Farmers’ Market, a local favorite that draws the community together to celebrate and shop fresh produce, local handmade products, and so much more. In June, the women of Madeira get together for the annual Girls’ Night Out, a special summertime shopping event that lifts up local businesses. Madeira has long been recognized as a picture-perfect place to raise a family—and for good reason. Along with its quiet, safe residential neighborhoods, Madeira City Schools consistently rank among the top in the state of Ohio, offering advanced college-preparatory courses, plenty of extracurricular activities, and an experienced staff of teachers and administrators ready to support your student through their educational journey.
Sip and stroll to your heart’s content within the boundaries of Madeira’s DORA district, which went into effect last July. How do you DORA? It’s easy! Just purchase an alcoholic beverage in a specially marked cup from a qualified liquor permit holder. There are seven participating DORA establishments in Madeira, including A Tavola Bar + Trattoria, Piazza Discepoli, and SwingLine. Find more info at MadeiraChamber. com/DORA.
After years of anticipation, Madeira finally welcomed Swing Line Madeira, a neighborhood bar and grill with a little something for everyone. Opened by the same group behind Paxton’s and Ramsey’s Trailside in nearby Loveland, Swing Line is named as a nod to the electric train that ran through the city in the early 20th century. It’s been less than a year since the restaurant opened its doors on Railroad Avenue, but the reviews are already in—and diners are head over heels for this family-friendly destination, which serves up everything from the classic cheeseburger and fries to healthier options like grain bowls and veggie burgers.
Also joining Madeira’s vibrant culinary scene is Monk, a sushi restaurant and Japanese-style steakhouse from the minds behind West Ches-
ter’s similarly named Sushi Monk. With an expansive menu that includes everything from traditional sushi and specialty rolls to ramen noodles and lobster tail, Monk is already a neighborhood favorite for Madeira residents.
On the housing front, Madeira has been selected as the site of Laurel Crossing, a luxury development by Legendary Homes. Nestled along Laurel Avenue, Laurel Crossing will sit just steps away from the downtown business district, giving residents easy access to all the best dining and retail options the city has to offer. The project, which is the largest in Legendary Homes’ history, will feature several stylish “Portfolio Homes” that range from 2,700 to 2,900 square feet and start at just over $800,000.
Sellman Park
Located right behind Madeira Middle School, this 10acre park is a family favorite for good reason. Its activity facilities include lighted tennis courts, a baseball diamond, sand volleyball courts, a soccer field, and basketball courts. The park also features playground equipment and a reservable picnic shelter, perfect for a family day out.
McDonald Commons
In a close-knit city like Madeira, you can rest easy knowing that highly skilled professionals are available just around the corner. Who needs to shop at the big box stores when you can call on a friendly, family-owned business to provide personalized services? Tucked into the heart of the downtown business district, Madeira Optical prides itself on being independent, community-based, and doctor-owned. The practice has been serving the local community for more than 65 years and has built up both a devoted clientele and a reputation for top-notch care. If it’s your furry friends who need a bit of TLC, Camargo Animal Hospital is an independent practice that provides a wide range of medical and surgical services for animals big and small.
Madeira may be known for its small town feel and friendly nature, but it’s also known for its beautiful, well-maintained homes. Luckily, there are plenty of local businesses that can help you achieve that manicured Madeira look. Freshen up your windows with help from Tri-State Blind Cleaning, Cincinnati’s one-stop shop for turning dusty blinds, shades, and drapes into window treatments that’ll look and feel just like new. Got an aspiring musician at home? Help them hone their skills or develop a new talent at The Music Salon, where Sean McGary, guitarist for The Naked Karate Girls, teaches guitar, bass, ukulele, and mandolin for all ages and skill levels.
Madeira’s largest municipal park is set to get a multimillion-dollar facelift! The city is hard at work redeveloping the 17-acre space, which is slated to receive two additional acres as part of the project. When all is said and done, the new and improved McDonald Commons will have plenty of new amenities, including six dedicated pickleball courts, a four-season community room, event lawn, and an expanded, handicap-accessible playground. Stay in the know and follow along with project updates at madeiracity.com.
Nelle V. Hosbrook
Bird Sanctuary
Willed to the city by its namesake, this park is a haven for bird-lovers all over the Greater Cincinnati area. Nelle V. Hosbrook, a descendent of one of Madeira’s fi rst settlers, was an avid nature enthusiast who wanted to preserve her legacy by making sure others could enjoy the two acres of wooded paradise she’d come to know and love . Be sure to check out the new Storybook Walk!
For more than 100 years, Madeira City Schools have been a beacon of excellence, ranking among the top in the state and the nation for academic performance and preparing students for success inside the classroom and out. With a committed team of faculty and administrators, your student can expect to thrive in a supportive academic and social environment that’s second-to-none in the Greater Cincinnati area. In 2022 alone, 43 Madeira High School seniors graduated with grade point averages of 4.0 or higher.
And Madeira’s top-ranked school system is about to reach even greater heights. In June of 2022, the City broke ground on a new addition to Madeira Elementary that will add a dozen new classrooms, media and maker spaces, plus a special STEAM lab
to help students build on skills learned in class. The addition also means a slight reorganization: Beginning this fall, grades K–5 will be housed at Madeira Elementary and grades 6–8 will be housed at Madeira Middle School.
Interested in helping Madeira students find greater academic success? The volunteer-run Madeira Schools Foundation is devoted to providing students and faculty the resources and opportunities they need to excel. Founded in 1984, this enthusiastic group of parents and community members has raised millions for everything from scholarships and computers to athletic facilities. Families from 21 school districts across Cincinnati have been trusting St. Gertrude for more than 80 years to provide their children with an excellent education rooted in the Dominican faith tradition: preaching truth, practicing virtue, and loving one another in Christ. With a mission to help students fleurish in both their personal and faith journeys, St. Gertrude is committed to giving kids the tools they need to develop their God-given talents. Small class sizes (the average homeroom size is only 20 students) and an overall student to teacher ratio of 13:1 mean that students can expect individualized attention in the classroom and ample opportunity to pursue their passions through a wide range of extracurricular activities.

The tournament, which will bring together some of the world’s finest golfers, takes place at the Kenwood Country Club September 4–10 and will feature a purse of $1.75 million. More than 100 local women will have the opportunity to hone their skills and forge new business connections thanks to the tournament’s presenting sponsor, P&G, which honors over 100 scholars annually with its “Queen City Game Changers.” Scholars in the programs participate in an eight-month curriculum that features hands-on training led by executive coaches, many of whom represent top local companies and organizations. One of the greatest perks of living in Madeira is that no matter where you live, you’re always just around the corner from dozens of fantastic dining options. For the finest cuts, deli-style takeout classics, and plenty more, Redden Fine Meats & Seafood is a community favorite. Try the sausages, which are all house-made! When you’re ready to find the perfect vintage or creative charcuterie board to pair with your next dinner party, you don’t have to look much further than specialty wine store Piazza Discepoli. And for dessert, stop by Gigi’s Cupcakes, a full-service bakery that offers a wide range of services, including catering and custom cake decorating.
