On behalf of the Montgomery City Council, I would like to welcome everyone to our beautiful City and let you know what makes our community so special. Montgomery is known for its small-town feel and charming historic downtown, but as you will see we are so much more. We have a vision for our City: “Montgomery excels at being a welcoming, healthy, and inclusive community while honoring and building upon its past, focusing on a bright future, and leading with its values.” We strive to live those words every day. Our City of nearly 11,000 residents prides itself on being an inclusive and welcoming community.

We are very proud of our City and have much to offer residents and visitors, including excellent city services, a charming collection of buildings in our historic downtown, family-friendly parks, unique shopping, and a variety of dining options to meet every taste.

The City of Montgomery works tirelessly to preserve our past, while at the same time, we look to the future. This year we proudly celebrated our new mixed-use development Montgomery Quarter. We spent years planning this development which offers new housing options, including luxury apartments known as Montgomery Quarter Residences. We’ve also welcomed Fifth Third Private Banking and Creative Planning in the office space and a retail shop, Hellman’s Fine Men Clothier. MQ also offers unique dining options with Bru Burger Bar and Livery. We will soon welcome Kozue and Social Kitchen to the area. These unique dining options along with familiar favorites such as Montgomery Inn and Carlo and Johnny, have helped put our City on the map as a dining destination in the greater Cincinnati area.

We are also proud of our other economic development projects, such as the Vintage Club of Montgomery and The Wicks, single-floor luxury condominium homes. We also have improvements to Bethesda North Hospital’s main entrance and emergency room, Sycamore Community School is building a new junior high school, and the Orchard Trail Subdivision continues to develop. We’ve also constructed a roundabout at one of our busier intersections that improves traffic flow, air quality, and safety. These new projects continue to allow Montgomery to attract and retain businesses that contribute to the City’s long-term stability while maintaining our small-town historic feel.

The City of Montgomery is honored to be named a Top Workplace 2023 by the Cincinnati Enquirer. City Council and City staff’s shared values, drive, and passion for making Montgomery a great community have led us to this honor for a fifth consecutive year. As City Manager, I welcome you to the City of Montgomery and invite you to discover all our community has to offer. I am in my sixth year of leading this remarkable team. Our City Council and City Staff work diligently to provide exceptional services that make this community a welcoming, inclusive, and a safe place for everyone to live, work, or visit.

While we are known for our small-town charm with a historic downtown, tree-lined streets, and brick-paved sidewalks, we are working tirelessly to build our future for generations to come. We recently celebrated our new mixed-use development, adding new businesses, restaurants, and housing options to our City. The Montgomery Quarter project and our efforts to update our infrastructure will serve Montgomery well into the future.

Our City has always sought to be a welcoming place for our residents, business owners, and visitors. I am incredibly proud of the work done by the Montgomery Diversity and Inclusion Commission. Our Commission hosts various special events to promote community awareness and education about the diverse cultures living in Montgomery. The City also has a new mental health and wellness initiative we are very proud of. We are bringing speakers from nationally recognized organizations and programming to help connect residents to the services they may need.

The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) awarded the City the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for its Annual Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (ACFR) for the fiscal year ending December 31, 2021. This award is a great honor for the City of Montgomery, as it is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting. The year 2022 represents the 26th consecutive year the City has received this award.

Montgomery City Council and staff are committed to being change agents in destigmatizing mental illness and increasing awareness, advocacy, and education of mental health and wellbeing. The City has created programming, content, and outreach efforts to support, including bringing in national speaker Kevin Hines.

Montgomery’s Sycamore Schools have consistently ranked among the U.S. News & World Reports’ “Best High Schools in America” and Newsweek’s “America’s Top High Schools” for the last 10 years. In 2022 the district proudly turned out 13 seniors named National Merit Semifinalists, placing them in the top 1% of U.S. high school seniors. Niche also named Sycamore Community Schools No. 4 in their 2022 “Best School Districts in Ohio.” Montgomery Elementary was named a 2021 National Blue Ribbon School for exemplary academic achievement.

Montgomery was awarded the 2021 Healthy Worksite Platinum Award which is the highest honor granted by the Healthy Business Council of Ohio.

Montgomery was named “Top Workplace” in 2023 by the Cincinnati Enquirer—this is the fifth year in a row the City has received this honor.

The first Montgomery Inn restaurant, founded by locals Ted and Matula Gregory, opened here in 1951. It wasn’t long until Matula’s BBQ sauce and ribs drew everyone from Johnny Cash and June Carter to Bob Hope and Britney Spears.

Montgomery began as a coaching stop on the Cincinnati–Zanesville road in the late 1790s, with an inn, two taverns, a grist mill, and a carding mill. Today, Montgomery is home to more than 500 businesses.

For the 28th consecutive year, Montgomery was named a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation. They’ve also received the Foundation’s “Growth Award” for 25 consecutive years.

For the second year in a row, Montgomery based Fifth Third Private Bank was named as the Best Private Bank for High Net Worth Clients by The Digital Banker and Global Private Banker as part of the Global Private Banking Innovation Awards. In addition, the Private Bank was named Highly Acclaimed as Outstanding Private Bank for Growth Strategy.

Since 1989, Montgomery has had a sister city in Neuilly-Plaisance, France. Their longstanding relationship became the basis for what is now a nationally recognized, award-winning sister cities program.

Bethesda North Hospital is the City’s Top Employer and named as one of America’s Top Hospitals in 2023 by Healthgrades.

Much ink has been spilled (and ground broken) about the many developments happening in Montgomery, Ohio, the last few years. Simply put, Montgomery is having a moment, and the town has embraced the changes while remaining steadfast to its small town spirit.

Known as Montgomery’s Moment, this community plan uses a long-range vision to guide city leaders’ decisionmaking regarding future growth and development. The last comprehensive plan was completed in 2007; since then, the world has changed quite a bit, and as a result (or perhaps in response), families have flocked to Montgomery for its historic charm, proximity to nearby job centers, top-tier schools, and small-town sensibility. This renewed interest in Montgomery has brought forth unique challenges that can be addressed during a comprehensive plan process; initiatives such as the Montgomery Diversity and Inclusion Committee have ensured the town forges ahead with care and consideration for all its residents, while improvements to Bethesda North, Sycamore Schools, and even the Montgomery Kroger have made living in this ’burb better than ever.

But the town isn’t resting on its laurels. Montgomery’s Moment is a three-phase plan. The first gathered info from resident surveys. The second, active through November 2023, synthesizes the information gathered and proposes goals. Finally, the build stage creates the plan itself, leading to a brighter and better Montgomery using the input and feedback of its citizens and city planners. Montgomery is home to what’s arguably the most charming downtown in Greater Cincinnati. Cobblestone sidewalks, tree-lined side streets, and a bustling business district full of new shops in historic storefronts make for a delightful downtown that’s the portrait of suburban bliss. However, if you’ve driven along Montgomery Road in recent months, you’ve likely been stopped by closed lanes and road detours due to the ongoing Montgomery Quarter project. This $150 million mixed-use project has been the talk of the town since its initial approval in 2019, and the last few years have transformed Montgomery’s downtown area into something far greater than the sum of its parts.

September 2022 brought a wave of openings, including eateries like cult favorite BRU Burger Bar and Livery, an eclectic spot full of Latin flair.

MONTGOMERY COMPREHENSIVE PLAN

Hellman’s, a classic Historic Montgomery shop specializing in high-end menswear, also relocated to a new location in Montgomery Quarter.

The Montgomery Quarter is far from finished, however, with the planning for Phase 2 well underway. In Phase 1, the development team secured The Tapestry by Hilton brand for the boutique hotel, which will be named The Rambler Hotel and is slated to open in July 2024. The boutique hotel will feature multiple event spaces, a uniquely designed lobby bar named Sidecar and 120 luxury guest rooms. A playful twist on the MidCentury Modern world of the ’50s and ’60s, The Hotel Rambler will inspire guests to reconnect with the feel-good nostalgia of a time in which America held its greatest promise—a time when everyone’s dreams could be fulfilled and folks moved to suburbs like Montgomery, Ohio, USA, in the hopes of enjoying a slice of this sweet suburban pie.

“The development team, in coordination with Hilton, will design and curate the guest experience to highlight the

uniqueness and energy of the Montgomery area,” says City Manager Brian Riblet. “The Tapestry by Hilton Hotel will set the standard for approachable luxury in the eastern suburbs of Cincinnati.”

Luxury apartments are also included in Montgomery Quarter, with leasing underway and residents moving in. A total of 148 apartments will be constructed in two buildings of flats and two buildings of townhomes.

Perhaps most exciting for Montgomery residents, however, is the green space that anchors this all-inclusive destination. Montgomery Quarter Phase 1 includes a brand-new public park in the center of the development, which will be programed with events such as festivals, concerts, yoga, and other gatherings.

“The new mixed-use neighborhood complements the Heritage District, provides vitality to the area, and serves as a spectacular gateway into the city that will to enhance the entire community for current and future residents, businesses, and visitors,” explains Riblet.

Atown that’s often lauded as one of the best places to live in Cincinnati—and Ohio— Montgomery is a wholly warm and inviting place that welcomes all with open arms. Diversity and inclusion is an important part of this, and The Montgomery Diversity and Inclusion Committee was formed in January 2018 to ensure that residents were well represented and included in town development and initiatives.

The committee is composed of residents representing various faiths, nationalities, age groups, and life experiences, and its list of accomplishments includes everything from presentations on implicit bias and cultural competency to its “Know Your Neighbor” series that’s set the standard for how other neighborhoods should approach diversity and inclusion.

In addition, chamber members mail out handwritten welcome greetings to all new Montgomery residents, a tradition that speaks volumes about the community-minded, all-are-welcome ethos of this special town.

Each year, The Montgomery Diversity and Inclusion Committee hosts semimonthly meetings that invite guest speakers, volunteer opportunities, and even off-site “field trips” to area museums and nonprofits. Guest lecturers representing a diverse array of political, religious, and professional affiliations have provided invaluable perspective and experience to the Committee. Previous lecturers have included experts like Julie Letwich, Executive Director of the Immigrant and Refugee Law Center, who in 2022 gave an informative presentation regarding refugees in Greater Cincinnati

and Beverly Horstman, Ohio State Coordinator for Braver Angels, who in 2023 spoke to the group on the topic of bringing individuals with different political views together.

The last couple of years, The Montgomery Diversity and Inclusion Committee has turned its attention to events and guest speakers that speak to the wider cultural and political climate of the country. Special lectures ranging from the proper use of pronouns as well as biases affecting the LGBTQ+ community; guest lecturers representing local Hispanic, Indian, and Jewish culture; and speakers explaining the importance of supporting womenand minority-owned businesses speak volumes about this “traditional” town’s self-awareness and forward-thinking mindset and serve as a model to which all communities should strive.
