A NOTE FROM BLAKE

MOST NEW MUSICALS THESE DAYS ARE ADAPTATIONS OF MOVIES or jukebox anthologies of a singer’s greatest hits strung together with minimal dialogue. After all, familiar songs and stories are comforting. You know what you’re going to get. We produce some of those musicals too, of course, and they’re almost always big crowd pleasers.

That said, it’s equally if not more important to create something new. They say the hardest thing to do in the theatre is to make a new musical. It requires vision, passion, great storytelling, exceptional composition — and the profound collaboration of a large team of artists.

Based on the diary of an actual teenager, Rutka Laskier, this new musical tells her coming-of-age story set in the Jewish ghetto of B dzin, Poland, as the Nazis take over the city. And while it’s historical in context, Rutka’s story is given fresh, contemporary relevance through the indierock score of Jocelyn Mackenzie and Jeremy Lloyd-Styles (from the band Pearl and the Beard), a nuanced script from writer Neena Beber (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), and visionary direction from director Wendy C. Goldberg (a Playhouse Associate Artist).

It’s a familiar story made new because it sees the world through the eyes of its teenage characters. We experience their hopes, dreams and challenges amid insurmountable circumstances. And still, Rutka gives us hope. Remembrance matters. As the musical says, you will never forget her name.

Finally, I want to point out that Rutka marks the beginning of a new journey for our Playhouse. When we opened this glorious new facility, we set out to establish Cincinnati as an incubator for nationally important work. Thanks to our creative partners in the Big Apple, we are proud to launch this brand-new musical on its journey to Broadway and beyond.

Now you can say that you saw it here first!

Thanks for being part of our celebratory new season.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Ohio, whose name originates from the Iroquoian word ohi-yo, meaning good rivers, is a testament to the deep connection between the land and the Indigenous peoples who have inhabited it for centuries. The Cincinnati region is ancestral land of many Nations, and Indigenous people are still here today. As a step toward honoring the truth and achieving healing and reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, we recognize and honor the enduring connection these Nations have to this territory. May we reflect on our commitment to understanding, preserving, and celebrating the rich culture of Native Indigenous communities who have shaped and continue to contribute to these lands.

WHAT IS A LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT?

It is the recognition of the Native Americans/First Nations/Indigenous Peoples who cared for these lands prior to removal. Our statement was created with guidance from our partners at the For more information, visit urbannativecollective.org.

RUTKA: A NEW MUSICAL

COMPOSERS’ NOTES

Jeremy: It feels like the world looks for a step-by-step replay of the Holocaust to ensure that this horrific event of human savagery never happens again. But in reality, the powers in charge will never do it the same way again. At times couched in ambiguity, world governments still use the same basic instruments of war to target innocent civilians through starvation and the destruction of homes, schools and medical systems. We adults will rationalize it every step of the way. But the canary in the coal mine is always the young. Their olfactory senses haven’t been saturated by decades of the stench of politics, capitalism or nationalism. We should always listen to what they have to say when they say it.

I’m proud to be a part of something like this. To maybe help elevate a young person’s voice who was once a witness and victim to the darkness of humanity. Someone who cried out to say this is wrong when a government contradicted her feelings and rationalized its actions. I’m proud to share this story and music with you and hope that we transpose our lives and loved ones over these kids and their families to see if there are similarities, and if there are, run like hell to stop it from taking another step. The next Rutka Laskier is alive today.

Jocelyn: I admit I hesitated when we were first approached to take on this project. I feared writing a musical set during the Holocaust could be too sensitive or even risked feeling inappropriate. I feared that I, as a privileged, white, Catholic-raised, American woman, had no right to offer my creative two cents to a subject that had nothing to do with me or my family’s history. The minute I read Rutka’s Notebook, I knew I was wrong.

Rutka was a real person living in unspeakable circumstances. Her bravery to share her experience in writing — which was incredibly dangerous during the Nazi occupation — paved the way for new generations to feel her pain, share her joy and carry her memory. If she was brave enough to do something like that, something that actually risked her life, I could summon the bravery to use my talents to be of service to her legacy.

Today, I get to make art. I get to make music. Rutka didn’t get to do any of that. If we have the privilege to live to tell these stories, it is our duty as artists to show up and make art on behalf of those who were not able.

Rutka’s actions changed the world. She changed my world. It is my hope that this show and these songs will move you to find the bravery you need to answer your own unique call to action.

RUTKA: A NEW MUSICAL

PLAYWRIGHT’S NOTES

As I sit and write this afternoon, a headline has just announced that a far-right nationalist party has won a state election in Germany, the first to do so since Hitler’s Nazi government. In Springfield, Ohio, last month, a dozen neo-Nazis brandished assault rifles and flags bearing swastikas as they marched against immigration. My own children are awaiting a restoration citizenship to Germany, the country where their grandmother was forced to flee as a child. Their great grandmother Lydia was killed by Nazis in Poland as she attempted to join her husband and young son, who managed to escape to Palestine. My mother, born the same year as Rutka, told me stories about her older brother who fought in World War II, where he won two Silver Stars and rescued a young Jewish boy who ran to him on the fields when he saw the mezuzah Uncle Howard wore around his neck. Stories, so many stories, every family having their own stockpile passed from old to young. I believed that surely by the time of my own adulthood, the stupidity of war, the brutality, the prejudices, the xenophobia, nationalism, fascism and irrational hate would be strange things of a receding past, not ongoing tragedies. Though the systematic brutality of the Holocaust is sui generis in its horror, we continue to dehumanize the perceived other.

It is with this painful awareness that I got to know Rutka, a young girl whose open heart, wit, curiosity, humor, passion, bravery, intellect and self-awareness made her feel like a friend I wish I’d had and made the events of the past freshly shocking. Thanks to a human relay chain of people determined to preserve and protect Rutka’s words, her singular voice survives. With the clarity of youth, Rutka shows us that joy, love, friendship and hope are irrepressible. Her sister

Zahava has shared this same generosity and care, inviting us onto a path of hope for the future that their father built despite enduring monstrous losses in his past. We are now fellow caretakers of Rutka’s joy, of her vibrant, fiercely determined spirit, of her resistance — a resistance that began with words, with the simple yet brave act of Rutka deciding to write down what she saw and what she felt. Though the world of Rutka and her friends has vanished, their spirit cannot be vanquished. It’s my honor to be part of the expanding village coming together to carry Rutka’s story forward.

. Her memory is, indeed, a blessing.

Judaism Inbound is an introduction to Judaism class that covers Judaism as a religion, Judaism as history, and Judaism as a culture, with a “spiritual but not religious” approach. It is meant for a wide variety of people, but a perfect course for those considering conversion, in multi-faith relationships, seeking to unlearn/relearn a new framing around Judaism, or just curious about Judaism.
