Whether you’re sitting in the new Moe and Jack’s Place – The Rouse Theatre or in the historic Rosenthal Shelterhouse Theatre, I hope you’re making yourself at home here. It is your Playhouse.
It’s hard to believe our 2022-23 season is coming to a close with our final two productions. Yet I can’t help feeling that we’re ending in a way that leaves us excited for the future. Shane, by Karen Zacarías, and Origin Story, by Nathan Alan Davis, are world premieres from beloved voices in American theatre. These stories are bold and entertaining in their own remarkable ways, and we’re so proud to be the first to produce them. We look forward to seeing them performed on stages across the country.
With Shane, Karen brings one of the most celebrated Westerns to life in the Rouse Theatre. She honors the cultural authenticity of the Wild West, where a diverse population of cowboys, frontiersmen and homesteaders lived and thrived. This fresh adaptation pays homage to the Western genre as we know it — and at the same time, it gives it new life by pulling from rich historical details and including Black, Brown and Indigenous perspectives. A fascinating character study lies at the story’s center, and it’s enriched by themes of family and principles, and deepened by an examination of American masculinity.
Across the lobby, Nathan brings us a modern-day story about identity and belonging. Origin Story introduces Margaret, a young woman with many existential questions on her mind — the kind that emerge when we’re yearning to understand who we are. She leads an ensemble of truly memorable characters who are searching for purpose in their own ways. I loved this script the first time I read it, partly for its profound and unexpected turns and partly for its endearing characters, who stayed with me long after I met them on the page. Under the direction of our own Joanie Schultz, Associate Artistic Director, I’m sure Origin Story will elicit a similar experience for you, too.
What a remarkable season we’ve had together! I hope you’ll join us again for even more stories that will inspire, entertain and lift up our shared humanity. Read about the productions heading to our stages for the 2023-24 season and consider subscribing at cincyplay.com!

Nathan Alan Davis is one of the nation’s hottest contemporary playwrights. In this theatre-going season alone, he has three world-premieres debuting across the country: The High Ground, Eternal Life Part 1, and, of course, Origin Story. Although the subject matter of each play is vastly different, some recurring themes and ideas reveal insight into what motivates Davis’ writing.
The High Ground, which was commissioned in 2016 by Arena Stage in Washington, DC, is a rumination on love, loss, and the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. Taking place in modern-day Tulsa, the play centers around a soldier and the various women he meets at the top of Standpipe Hill. Davis provided the Washington Post with some insights about the play. “What struck me was a sort of symbolic meaning
… at the heart of it, it raises a question about how we can continue to buy into the American Dream without addressing an episode like [the Tulsa massacre].”
Eternal Life Part 1 debuted in April at the Wilma Theater in Philadelphia. In it, a family from the near future tries to live well (and forever?) amidst space travel, an ancient goose, and a mysterious man peddling an immortality elixir. Of the play, Davis said “Eternal Life Part 1 is inspired by questions about family, how you pass on what you have to the next generation, and the impossibility of getting everything right as a parent.”
The Playhouse is proud to be producing Davis’ third world-premiere of the season, Origin Story. In it, the main character Margaret wrestles with holding two corporate jobs and not knowing who her birth parents are. When asked about the inspiration for writing Origin Story, Davis said “I decided to write a play in which every scene was delightful. The play ended up growing to touch on a lot of different themes/concepts/ideas like race, identity, work, debt, family, etc., but the question I would come back to was: does this delight me?”
The ideas we see in these three premieres are in conversation with each other and reflect the ways in which Davis is thinking about these concepts. As Davis said in an interview with the Cleveland Public Theatre, “I’m very interested in the idea of legacy … what’s our spiritual identity? What do we believe in? What do we aspire to? These are all things that I’m interested in – that I draw inspiration from.”

Shane
I first encountered the book Shane by Jack Schaefer, when I was a sixth grader, a year after my family and I had immigrated from Mexico to Boston. I had seen dubbed American westerns in Mexico; and the look of the American Cowboy is iconic worldwide. The story of Shane, however, was a different type of Western. It centered on a family, who like mine, had ventured to a different place in search of a safer and more prosperous future. The mother was called Marian, which is a common Latin American name, and I imagined her as such. And the sensitive and mysterious Shane, described as a lean, dark figure…lived in my imagination as my hero Roberto Clemente, the Afro-Latino baseball legend who had died trying to fly supplies to Nicaraguan earthquake victims.
I devoured the book; wrote a book report on it (three-five paragraphs!) and then re-read it again that summer. I’ve never seen the lauded 1953 movie starring Alan Ladd (which I’m sure is terrific) mostly because I so enjoyed and felt “at home” with the vision of Shane I had built in my head. It was my own version of American cowboys and the West. And perhaps only relevant to me.
Fast forward a couple of decades, I realized that the real American West was very different than what was always depicted on films. One fourth of cowboys were Black; Mexicans made up another fourth. And most films and books completely erased the tragic impact
The Homesteading Act had on the Native American community and the complicated complicity Westerns have in corrupting that narrative. The book’s examination of American values, individualism, and masculinity, however, was still as relevant today as it was in 1949 when it was written.
So, I decided to revisit one of the first books I read in the United States with the memory of an eleven-year-old immigrant girl and the knowledge that came later… and, like Bobby in the book, see if I could unearth the story I thought Shane was telling me all along.

The term “cowboy” might immediately evoke an image of John Wayne alone on a horse, riding valiantly into the sunset. But Westerns, in both movies and novels, have painted an incomplete picture of old west cowboys. The first cowboys appeared in America in the 1500s. They were largely Indigenous American “vaqueros,” who were trained by Spanish colonizers to wrangle cattle on horseback, utilizing expert skill with a lasso.
In the 19th century, enslaved African American men were frequently trained in ranching. When the end of the Civil War saw those formerly enslaved moving north and west, many were able to gain work as cowhands. By the end of the 1800s, about a quarter of all cowboys were Black and an even larger percentage were of Mexican descent. Although the contributions of these cowboys of color are not widely known, some of these cowboys have become as legendary as John Wayne himself.
Nat Love was born in 1854 Tennessee and grew up during the Civil War and Reconstruction. After the Civil War, he moved to Texas and worked for 20 years moving cattle. In 1907, he wrote The Life and Adventures of Nat Love Better Known in the Cattle Country as “Deadwood Dick.” In it he tells some tall tales about his adventurous life and many accomplishments, including a run in with “Buffalo” Bill Cody, winning the same horse in two different raffles, and being a horse whisperer. It was these stories that helped Nat go down in history as one of the most famous cowboys.
Bill Pickett was of African American and Cherokee descent. Born to formerly enslaved parents in 1870, the family moved to Texas when he was 18 years old. Pickett and his brothers opened a cowboy service, where they would break horses, move herds, and provide other ranching services. It was doing this work that Bill invented “bulldogging,” the skill of grabbing cattle by the horns and wrestling
