NOTES FROM BLAKE THE STAGES ARE SET, THE CASTS AND crews are ready, and the lights are up again on your Playhouse in the Park! We’re elated to be back onstage as a theatrical community, presenting amazing stories in the Marx and Rosenthal Shelterhouse theatres. Words can’t express how grateful we are to see you again as we gather together and experience the unique joy that you only get from live theatre. You may have noticed things look a little different around here! We’ve broken ground on the construction of the Rouse Theatre for a once-in-a-generation project. A new era of Playhouse theatre is on the horizon, bringing with it more patron comfort, enhanced accessibility and the technology to wow theatregoers from Tristate audiences to Broadway producers. That also means this season will be the last we spend in the Marx Theatre — join us for an eclectic lineup of shows that celebrates the Marx’s rich history and artistic legacy. We open with a world premiere drama by Keith Josef Adkins, The West End. This Playhouse commission tells an authentically Cincinnati story, steeped in history and emotionally compelling characters. Under the direction of Associate Artist Nicole A. Watson, The West End sheds light on those who forged new lives here during the Great Migration. In the Rosenthal Shelterhouse Theatre, we return to the stage with another Queen City story that’s sure to please. Need Your Love explores the life and times of singer Little Willie John in a continuation of KJ Sanchez’s Cincinnati King musical docudrama. With more stories to tell and a catalog of soulful R&B, we dive deeper into the life of this King Records Studio legend. We’re eager to show you what else we’ve got in store this season: familiar favorites like A Christmas Carol, presented by First Financial Bank, and Steel Magnolias, presented by Leading Ladies; entertaining new comedies like Incident at Our Lady of Perpetual Help and School Girls; Or, the African Mean Girls Play; Rooted, a world premiere by Be Here Now playwright Deborah Zoe Laufer; and the inspiring one-woman show, Becoming Dr. Ruth, presented by The Jewish Foundation of Cincinnati. Since you’ve been gone, we’ve been hard at work to ensure your safety and well-being, and we’re following the ongoing guidance of the CDC, the State of Ohio, the Hamilton County Department of Health and the City of Cincinnati. Learn more about how we’re making your visits here healthy, safe and comfortable at cincyplay.com/safety.

THE WEST END PLAYWRIGHT’S NOTES BY KEITH JOSEF ADKINS Most of the Black people I know in Cincinnati have roots in the West End. Whether it’s parents, grandparents or beyond. Many of my father’s relatives, in particular, migrated to Cincinnati from Taliaferro County and Atlanta, Georgia. They were part of the Great Migration from the 1910s through the 1940s when millions of African Americans fled the South seeking economic diversity and peace from unfathomable racism. Whether all who migrated actually achieved either is an entirely different matter. But, in my family, much was achieved. They built communities, careers and legacies, and are still building. I am a descendant of the West End, if one can say that. I was born and raised in Cincinnati and grew up in the suburb of Woodlawn. My
maternal grandmother and her parents lived on Armory, Livingston and Wade Streets and attended St. Joseph Catholic Church. My maternal grandfather’s GRANDMOTHER (who was born one year after Emancipation) migrated from Florida in 1917 and lived at 1509 Plum Street. My maternal grandmother’s father worked for Kahn’s in Camp Washington, but made extra income being the Ice-andCoal Man in the West End during the 1930s. Over the years, I’ve heard numerous tales about the West End — the excitement of the Cotton Club, the reliability of Ferguson Cabs, the beacon of education known as Stowe School, about families that looked out for each other, and friendships that lasted forever. However, it is my father and his family’s presence in the West End that inspired me to put a spotlight on this unforgettable community. They lived on Mound Street and later Richmond before buying a home in Avondale. They attended St. Luke Baptist Church on Clark Street where a Rev. Charles Flint was pastor and my grandfather, the Rev. Clarence Adkins, was an associate pastor. From what I’m told, Rev. Ernest Flint (brother to Charles) pastored a storefront called Golden Leaf Baptist on Baymiller Street. When Rev. Ernest Flint left to pastor in Covington my grandfather became the pastor of Golden Leaf. And by the way, Ernest’s wife was also my grandmother’s cousin and all of the aforementioned hailed from Taliaferro County, Georgia. The stories go on and on. This play is not a testament of every experience in the West End (because there are many). It’s one story that allows me to immortalize a place that shaped the lives of so many I know and love. The West End.

THE WEST END OUR HISTORY UNFOLDS Keith Josef Adkins’ The West End explores a transformative period of time in our city’s history. This fictional tale draws inspiration from the Great Migration and time between World War I and World War II. Characters Grace, Peek, Chloe, Heath and Zieglar bring to life pivotal moments in Cincinnati history, interacting with and referencing real people, events and places. Take a look at just a few of those references.
Rev. Wilber A. Page
Union Baptist Church
Born in 1895, Rev. Page was raised in Cincinnati as the son of a Baptist minister. He served in World War I with the 317th Army Engineers, and upon his return from service, he became pastor of the Union Baptist Church — the city’s oldest African American church. An influential spiritual leader and devoted community organizer, Rev. Page increased the church’s membership from 210 to 1000 between years 1919 and 1930. He served on several community boards throughout his decades-long career, and he was named by the Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce as a “Great Living Cincinnatian” in 1979.
Originally called the African Union Baptist Church, the congregation was formed in 1831 by 14 members who had been discriminated against at Enon Baptist Church, which had a predominantly white congregation. Members began meeting in one of their homes until they finished construction of a formal church building in 1835. The church was instrumental in helping enslaved people seek refuge along the Underground Railroad, and they hosted prominent abolitionists like Frederick Douglass and Henry Ward Beecher for speaking engagements.

THE WEST END
Regal Theatre
The Cotton Club
Located at Linn St. and Clark St., the Regal was more than a performance venue that hosted the likes of James Brown and Smokey Robinson — it was a welcoming community gathering space for Cincinnati’s Black residents. The 1500-seat theatre opened as the Casino Theatre in 1914 and presented vaudeville acts, and when Jack Goldman purchased the theatre in 1936, it presented films and entertainment. The Regal hosted community fundraising events on a regular basis that supported schools, children and families in need.
From the 1930s through the ‘50s, Cincinnati’s Cotton Club was one of the city’s only integrated night clubs where both Black and white patrons could drink, mingle and enjoy live music, dancing and comedy — usually until the wee hours of the morning. It was located in the West End at 6th St. and Mound St. Famous people who played or attended include Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Sarah Vaughn, Ezzard Charles, Clarence Page and Helen Humes.
The West End features even more touchstones from Cincinnati’s history, including Ezzard Charles, Albee Theater, Mecklenburg’s, St. Joseph Catholic Church, Stowe School and more. VISIT OUR LOBBY DISPLAY OR CINCYPLAY.COM/BLOG TO LEARN ABOUT MORE OF THE PEOPLE AND LOCATIONS MENTIONED IN THE WEST END. Images are part of the Robert O’Neal Multicultural Art Center (ROMAC) Black Cincinnati History Collection. The ROMAC’s mission is to celebrate, advance and preserve African American culture and achievement through the arts, history, and education, while also uplifting the rich diversity of artists and cultures of Greater Cincinnati.

NEED YOUR LOVE PLAYWRIGHT/DIRECTOR’S NOTES BY KJ SANCHEZ Three years ago, we premiered my play Cincinnati King right here in the Rosenthal Shelterhouse Theatre. Sometimes it feels like just yesterday and then other times, given what we have all gone through (and are still going through), it feels like many lifetimes ago. Cincinnati King was about the founding of King Records, which featured the lives of Syd Nathan, founder of King Records, the seminal King studio drummer and local icon Philip Paul and Little Willie John, one of King Records brightest stars. During lockdown I kept thinking about these people, and in particular, I kept thinking about Little Willie John. Richard Huntley (our Music Director and the drummer you will see tonight, who also happens to be my husband) and I kept listening to his music. There was many a
rough day which was made better by listening to Little Willie John’s records. His joie de vivre, his take-no-prisoners energy and his indelible spirit gave me something to hold onto, something to cherish, something to lift my spirits. Along with listening to a lot of great music I was also watching — I’m not ashamed to admit it — a lot of Netflix. I love “spin-off” TV shows and movies, which have become a regular practice, especially in the genre of super heroes. So, since Little Willie John was a kind of super-hero for me, I decided to write a spin-off play about his music and his life. Like most spin-offs, some of his story you will recognize, and some of it will be new. Some of the music might be familiar, and some of it has been added, just for Little Willie John. This was a great chance to dive deeper into his catalogue and to immerse ourselves with the music of his childhood as well. I am so grateful to Steve Harper and the Nathan Family, and the great Mr. Philip Paul, for providing the groundwork from which Cincinnati King was built. This time around, I add one more name to that list of people I am forever indebted to: Reverend Dr. Mable John, Willie John’s older sister, who graciously granted me an interview and told me such beautiful stories of her beloved brother Willie. I am honored and overwhelmed that I have the good fortune to share these stories and this exceptional music with you. It’s so good to be back. It’s so, so good to see you. Thank you for spending some time with us and Little Willie John.
