Why do you feel nostalgia, the 1970s in this instance, has the power to connect with an audience, particularly in terms of narrative? For people of a certain age, taking a look back at the 1970s can remind us of all the changes we’ve lived through regarding how we communicate with each other. The little sights, sounds and behaviors that were once a part of our daily lives that somewhere along the line disappeared. A busy signal. The clacking of typewriter keys. Waiting for the mail. Answering the phone without knowing who’s calling. But a big part of nostalgia also involves the fallibility of memory — and that’s what really fascinates me. How two people can remember the same event so differently. Especially family members. Our protagonist, Linda O’Shea, talks about the plasticity of memories, how they change over time with each recollection, to the point where, even when it comes to your own life, you may be considered an unreliable narrator.

What were some of your chief aims in creating this particular Irish-Catholic family? Is this in any way autobiographical? I was raised Catholic and attended parochial school for 12 years, so there are deﬁnitely similarities. My father was a cab driver who worked seven days a week. My mother had many jobs over the years. She sold Avon, real estate and worked for the phone company. She operated a small daycare business out of our home in addition to looking after my grandmother who lived with us for many years after suffering a stroke. My mother did all of this after giving birth to 10 children. The play’s main story is invented.

Were you ever concerned about placing the “birds and the bees” conversation as the play’s catalyst, or did you immediately know it would provide creative opportunities to resonate throughout? I was concerned to a certain extent but the conversation that Linda has with Becky has to be inappropriate enough to induce apoplexy in Father Lovett. I think one of the reasons the conversation is so shocking is because it is between two young females, and in the ‘70s (and some might even say today), there were still hard and fast rules about ladylike behavior. There were things you didn’t talk about because those things were unseemly or shrouded in mystery with a high “ick” factor (female puberty).

In many respects, the women at the center of the play are survivors. Was there a particular message you wanted to send by crafting the play in this manner? I grew up in a Catholic family, and one thing that I witnessed that has always stayed with me is the dedication, hard work and unﬂagging volunteerism of the mothers and fathers of the parish — particularly the mothers. In my day, the moms did the heavy lifting: tutoring, bake sales, Catholic Childhood Association, festivals, bazaars, fundraisers, caring for the sick, emergency daycare. The organization, set-up and clean-up for every celebration under the sun from baptism to death was handled by the ladies of the parish. And if a surprise pregnancy or scandal popped up, they handled that, too. Sometimes while balancing a baby on one hip and a bag of groceries on the other.

INCIDENT AT OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP BARBARA CHISHOLM (THERESA “TERRI” CARMICHAEL) Barbara is so delighted to be returning to Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park for the third time, following appearances in the solo show Erma Bombeck: At Wit’s End and as Annie Wilkes in Misery. She hails from Austin, Texas, and her recent credits include the world premiere of the Audible play Daddies and the world premiere of Un Año; Sugar in Tiny Beautiful Things; and in the U.S. premiere of hang. Other regional credits include ¾ Inches of Sky at The Playwrights’ Center in Minneapolis; Keep Your Forks at Berkeley Repertory Theatre; Red Hot Patriot: The Kick-Ass Wit of Molly Ivins at ZACH Theatre; The Women at San Diego Repertory Theatre; and Fixing King John with the Rude Mechs. Film and television credits include Fault Line, Mr. Roosevelt, Fast Food Nation and a supporting role in the Academy Award-nominated Best Film Boyhood. She has thrice been voted Best Actor in the Austin Chronicle’s annual Best of Austin Readers Poll and is the recipient of multiple B. Iden Payne Theatre Awards, Austin Critics Table Awards and Drama Logue awards for acting. As Producing Director of Red Then Productions, Barbara starred in When Something Wonderful Ends and produced three highly successful runs of a one-man adaptation of Shakespeare’s Henry V. She teaches acting at the University of Texas at Austin. ERIN NOEL GRENNAN (JOSEPHINE “JO” O’SHEA) Erin is thrilled to return to Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, where she previously appeared as Pooty in Craig Lucas’ Reckless. She has been in several local shows with Encore Youth Theatre and Rise Up Performing Arts, with some of her favorites being the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz Jr., Young Anna in Frozen Jr. and Matilda Wormwood in Matilda the Musical. Most recently, Elli performed in The Children’s Theatre production of Elf the Musical Jr. at the Taft Theater. She wants to thank her parents and her friends for always believing in her and give a special shout-out to Rodney and Angie Neal for teaching her the love of theatre. INCIDENT AT OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP JOHN PLUMPIS (MIKE O’SHEA/FATHER LOVETT/ BETTY HECKENBACH) John is grateful to ﬁnally return to the stage after more than two years. He previously appeared at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park as Fennyman in Shakespeare in Love. National company credits include Timon in The Lion King, Barrymore starring Christopher Plummer (also the 2011 ﬁlm) and Neil Simon’s Laughter on the 23rd Floor. He has appeared in multiple off-Broadway productions and in a wide variety of comedies, dramas, musicals and Shakespeare at many of North America’s leading theatres, from the Denver Center to Yale Repertory Theatre to Baltimore Center Stage to the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington DC, among many others. With New York’s The Actors Company Theatre, he was part of 31 productions as actor or director. His recent television appearances include Apple TV’s Little America, Half Life and HBO’s The Deuce. He is a frequent guest lecturer at colleges and universities, conducting master classes at over 50 institutions, and has taught multiple semesters at Montclair State University. Some of his thoughts on theatre have been published. In the spring of 2022, he will direct After Happily Ever After, a new musical, in New York City. ELISE RUCKER (LINDA O’SHEA) Elise is incredibly grateful to be making her Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park debut! She was most recently seen in Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s touring productions of Macbeth (Lady Macbeth), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Helena/Titania) and Romeo & Juliet (Friar Laurence). Elise received her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Acting with a minor in Women’s and Gender Studies from West Virginia University and has studied at The American Conservatory Theater and The Stratford Academy at the Shakespeare Festival in Ontario, Canada. While theatres were shut down, Elise discovered a passion for the creation of art through milk as a barista for breakfast enthusiasts. Now in his 10th season, he has diversified the Playhouse’s programming, embraced its tradition of new work, deepened the theatre’s community engagement and ushered in a new era with the ground-breaking of our new $49.9 million theatre complex. For the Playhouse, he commissioned and directed the world premiere of Karen Zacarías’ hugely popular comedy Native Gardens and then took it to the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis and Arena Stage in Washington DC. Other Playhouse directing credits include Margaret Atwood’s Alias Grace, Stephen King’s Misery, Shakespeare in Love, A Prayer for Owen Meany, Peter and the Starcatcher, Pride and Prejudice, Treasure Island, The Three Musketeers, The Last Wide Open, 4000 Miles, The Book Club Play, Abigail/1702 and Mad River Rising. Other regional directing credits include productions at Baltimore Center Stage, Milwaukee Repertory Theater, The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Utah Shakespeare Festival, PlayMaker’s Repertory Company, Folger Shakespeare Theatre, Round House Theatre, Clarence Brown Theatre, National Shakespeare Company and Vermont Stage. Blake served on the Board of the Theatre Communications Group for six years. He was named a finalist for the 2019 Zelda Fichandler Award from the SDC Foundation honoring extraordinary work in the regional theatre. BRANDON T. HOLMES (ASSISTANT STAGE MANAGER) Brandon is excited to return to Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, having worked as a stage management intern during the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons. Playhouse credits this season include the world premiere of The West End and A Christmas Carol, as well as past credits of Merrily We Roll Along, Thunder Knocking on the Door and The Understudy. For the past eight seasons, he was the Production Stage Manager for Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati where he managed over 40 productions. INCIDENT AT OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP WELCOME TO 1970s AMERICA BY NATALIE CLARE

Through her narration, Linda O’Shea takes us back to the 1970s when the events of Incident at Our Lady of Perpetual Help take place. Take a closer look at the real-world events that shaped the time period. WORLD EVENTS AND POLITICS • The U.S. withdraws troops from Vietnam in 1973, ending 12 years of combat in Southeast Asia. The withdrawal follows years of protests, national division and violence, and growing anti-war sentiment from across the country. • Social movements seek to expand fundamental rights for women, the LGBTQ community and Black Americans. Figures like Gloria Steinem, Angela Davis, Marsha P. Johnson, Harvey Milk, Shirley Chisholm and John Lewis become politically influential. • President Nixon is indicted by the House Judiciary Committee for his involvement in the Watergate scandal. He resigns from office in 1974. TECHNOLOGY • IBM introduces the floppy disk in 1971 as an early solution for storing electronic data. • Motorola invents the first mobile phone in 1973. It weighs over two pounds and measures over a foot in length. • Dr. Raymond Damadian invents the MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), which is considered one of the most significant medical inventions in the century. Its first use on a human takes place in 1977.

ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT • Music is available for purchase on vinyl, cassette and eight-track. Portable boomboxes, transistor radios and cassette players emerge as popular musical devices. • The Godfather is released in 1972 and ushers in a new era of big box-office films. Other blockbusters that follow suit include Jaws and Star Wars. • Punk rock, disco and funk become popular new musical genres towards the end of the decade. The Clash, The Ramones and The Sex Pistols influence the punk scene, while Donna Summer, The Bee Gees and KC and the Sunshine Band become disco and funk favorites. FASHION AND CULTURE • The time period is known as “the polyester decade” because of the massive availability of ready-to-wear clothing. • Trendy women’s styles range from hippie-influenced prairie dresses and floral accents to disco-type glamour. Women trade in the day dresses and petticoats of the previous decades for menswear-inspired trousers, jumpsuits and wrap dresses. • Men’s apparel branches out to embrace more color and more prints in what’s called “the peacock revolution.” They also embrace gender-neutral style accents like slimmer silhouettes, tight-fitting pants with flared bottoms and new materials like velvet and suede.

ROOTED PLAYWRIGHT’S NOTES BY DEBORAH ZOE LAUFER

Look at us, back in the theatre! These past two years, I’ve often worried that we’d have to squeeze all the stories into those tiny Zoom boxes forever. But if you’re reading this program note — we’re back! And we’re at the Playhouse, one of my favorite places on earth.

I’m particularly excited to bring this play to the stage now because it’s so theatrical, with elements that require wildly imaginative designers and a visionary director like Noah to achieve. It’s what I’ve missed so much — the magic that great sets, lights, sound, costumes, puppetry can do. It’s something that can’t happen in any other medium. It’s something that those tiny Zoom boxes can’t contain.

Along with dozens of cats and dogs, I raised a woodchuck, a beaver, ferrets, deer, a grosbeak — whatever animals were orphaned or injured were left on our doorstep. Trying to understand what they needed, trying to see the world through their eyes, shaped who I am. This was originally a story I was developing for television, with all the animals from my childhood making an appearance. When I decided to make it a play, I needed another way in. I’ve been obsessed with Monica Gagliano, a scientist I discovered on YouTube — she does remarkable experiments about learning and consciousness with plants. When I’m obsessed with something, I have to put it in a play, so it was a natural shift from animals to plants. This is my third production at the Playhouse and my second commission. If you saw Be Here Now you’ll recognize Luanne (and Emily Kratter, the delightful actress who plays her). Rooted is also set in the same ﬁctionalized version of my childhood home. But I wanted to echo some of the themes of Be Here Now as well which feel more pertinent now than ever — the yearning for meaning and belief, the struggle to be truly present, the power of female friendship and what happens when you slow down time and allow there to be quiet and connection in the midst of a chaotic, sometimes frightening world.

But, theatrical as this play is, it’s also oddly personal. Growing up on 100 acres of forest in upstate New York, I spent hours alone in the woods with my thoughts, a writing pad and a lot of non-humans. Luanne’s story about spending a summer trying to get a frog to sit in her hand is right out of my childhood. 2021–2022 | 21

Her most recent credits include 9000 Paper Balloons (Puppeteer), the pilot series The Smack Dab in the Middle of the Day Show (Puppet Director/Designer/Puppeteer) and the puppetry series Beautiful, Evil, Lost (Puppeteer). Just before the pandemic, Betsy toured Australia with Dead Puppet Society’s Laser Beak Man, which culminated in a run at the Sydney Opera House. Her New York credits include Lincoln Center Theater, La Mama, The Drama League, HERE Arts Center and St. Ann’s Warehouse. Hearing Enhancement In the Marx Theatre, hearing enhancement receivers providing volume enhancement to patrons with hearing impairment can be obtained prior to every performance from a house manager. The Rosenthal Shelterhouse Theatre has a new hearing loop system which works with existing T-Coil or Telecoil enabled hearing aids or cochlear implants. For more information, please see the house manager.

Large Print Program Large print programs for those with visual impairments are available upon request at every performance. CAMERAS AND RECORDING DEVICES Actors’ Equity Association strictly prohibits the use of cameras or recording devices in the theatre during the performance. CHILDREN Children under the age of 6 will not be admitted to Playhouse productions unless otherwise

FACILITY ACCESSIBILITY Patrons who are mobility-impaired may be dropped off outside the Playhouse’s south entrance. An elevator in the Budig Lobby allows for access to all levels of the Playhouse. LATECOMERS AND READMITTANCE Latecomers are seated at the discretion of the house manager, which may be as late as intermission. Latecomers may be denied admission depending on the demands or structure of a particular production. Please allow yourself adequate time to arrive, park and be seated. Should you need to leave the theatre during a performance, re-admittance and seating will be at the discretion of the house manager so as not to disturb the audience and actors. PARKING The Park Board reminds you that Eden Park officially closes at 10 p.m. As a grace period to the Playhouse, the police will not ticket vehicles until one half hour following the end of a performance. The Playhouse assumes no responsibility for anyone receiving a ticket for

illegal parking. Convenient parking is available in the Playhouse garage. Purchase parking in advance to secure a space. Parking can also be purchased from our parking attendant immediately before the performance if available. Accessible parking for those with disabilities is located in front of the main entrance, as well as in the Playhouse parking garage. Parking for persons with disabilities is limited and must be reserved and paid for in advance. All vehicles using these spaces must display a valid disability placard. PROHIBITION OF WEAPONS The Ohio Revised Code (R.C. 2923.126) has established the privilege of carrying a concealed handgun to Ohio citizens who have obtained the proper license. The same law explicitly grants private employers in the state the right to prohibit their employees and visitors from possessing firearms on the employer’s premises. With this notification the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park is informing you that it prohibits weapons of any kind on its premises, and reserves the right to search persons, parcels and vehicles on the same. This policy applies to all employees, patrons and visitors to the facility. RESTROOMS AND TELEPHONES Restrooms are located in the Rosenthal Plaza. A phone is located near the Box Office in the Budig Lobby. SMOKING/VAPING Smoking/vaping is prohibited in the entire theatre complex.
