RUBRIC TK WELCOME

MESSAGE FROM ARTSWAVE’S PRESIDENT & CEO Dear Friends, With our partners, the City of Cincinnati and Duke Energy, ArtsWave is proud to present the second annual showcase of new works by the region’s leading Black and Brown artists. Together, this year and last year’s Black and Brown Artist Program has funded nearly 50 artists with more than $550,000 in artist commissions. A program of this magnitude would not be possible without the help of many others. This includes ArtsWave Life Trustee Dick Rosenthal for beginning conversations that led to the support of Councilman Greg Landsman, Vice Mayor Jan-Michele Lemon Kearney and now, Mayor Aftab Pureval. Toilynn O’Neal Turner, founding director of the Robert O’Neal Multicultural Art Center (ROMAC), and acclaimed artist Annie Ruth provided counsel to our artists, including professional development services focused on grant writing, marketing and fundraising. In addition, the Black and Brown Artist Program receives support from Macy’s, the Greater Cincinnati Foundation, Fifth Third Bank, The Jewish Foundation, Hard Rock Casino and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. This year’s “Truth & Inspiration Artist Showcase” features visual art, film, music, dance — expanding from two locations to partnering with three different arts organizations: the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Cincinnati Museum Center and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. Each artist proposed an idea that captures “truth” and/or “reconciliation” to a panel of community stakeholders convened by ArtsWave in a competitive process for funding. We received 54 proposals that were vetted for their alignment to the theme, clarity of execution and impact on our larger community. This year, we are thrilled to be able to fund 22 artists with grants of $8,000 to $15,000 each. The artists selected by our panel represent a vast array of points of view, cultural perspectives and artistic disciplines. Through the power of the arts, they evoke empathy, and they demand change. It is our responsibility to hear them and respond. ArtsWave is on an intentional journey toward a more inclusive and equitable Cincinnati through the arts. This showcase is one step on this journey. If you look closely at the work in this exhibition, you’ll see that there is pain and heartache. Skepticism. Futility. Also hope. Imagination. Commitment. These are emotional drivers we can all connect to. If we care about a future where we value all people and all contributions, it starts right here. Please join us and add your intentionality to a growing movement toward a more just, warm and welcoming world.

WELCOME RUBRIC TK MESSAGE FROM THE CINCINNATI ART MUSEUM’S ACTING DIRECTOR As a part of our continuing work supporting diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility, the Cincinnati Art Museum is proud to join forces with ArtsWave, along with the Cincinnati Museum Center and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, to present the “Truth & Inspiration Artist Showcase.” The themes of this year’s showcase closely align with the museum’s mission to contribute to a more vibrant Cincinnati by “inspiring and connecting our communities through the power of art.” The artists featured in the “Truth & Inspiration Visual Art Exhibition” play a vital role in connecting our diverse audiences through their art. The exhibition here features the work of eight ArtsWave grant recipients, providing professional recognition of their work in their “museum debuts.” We applaud this new generation of inspirational Cincinnati artists for their outstanding contributions to the field and for their continuation of the great traditions of artmaking here in our city. The Cincinnati Art Museum also thanks you, the people of Cincinnati, for your support of these outstanding artists through your donations to ArtsWave. You are broadening the impact of the arts for all.

DAVID W. LINNENBERG | Cincinnati Art Museum Acting Director

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR OF CINCINNATI Congratulations on the 2022 “Truth & Inspiration Artist Showcase.” The Black and Brown Artists Program through ArtsWave is an incredible resource for the rich fabric of artists in our city. Cincinnati is nationally recognized for its artistic footprint, and it is this work that encourages us to push further with our involvement. This showcase is among the other festivals, performances and exhibitions that annually provide outlets of expression for local artists and stories for us all in the Cincinnati region to share. I applaud the work of ArtsWave for continuing this program for Black and Brown visionaries in Cincinnati. When I was elected Mayor, I made a promise to grow our city with equity at the center of the frame. By uplifting our Black and Brown artists, we are promoting a powerful and equitable arts community that will keep our city as a leader in the arts and empower our community members. On behalf of the City of Cincinnati, congratulations again. I look forward to welcoming visitors of this showcase to immerse themselves in the talent of Cincinnati’s artists.

After graduating as a Cincinnatus Scholar at UC’s DAAP program, she competed on “Project Runway: UTG” and “Project Runway All Stars.” She has created pieces for artists from Zendaya to Little Big Town.
