FROM THE GENERAL AND ARTISTIC DIRECTORS

T

hroughout Cincinnati Opera’s incredible 101-year story, it’s safe to say there’s never been a chapter quite like 2021. After canceling our 100th anniversary celebrations in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were determined to share live, in-person opera with our community again. With renewed hope provided by the development of effective vaccines, our team plunged fully into planning a first-of-its-kind experience with boundless optimism, imagination, and grit. The result was our first-ever Summer at Summit, and wow, was it incredible. Starting in early July, we set to work building an enormous outdoor opera theater at Blue Ash’s beautiful Summit Park. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, we developed a comprehensive plan that would ensure a safe environment for all involved, from opera-goers to artists, stage professionals, and staff. Donors, patrons, and partners amazed us with their generosity, providing resources and buying tickets by the thousands, selling out the season before the first production opened. Then, over 10 evenings in July and August, under the moon and stars, together we watched in awe as some of the world’s greatest artists shared with us the music we’d so deeply missed. It was, to put it simply, magical. And absolutely unforgettable. We are tremendously grateful to you for the role you played in supporting this once-in-a-century season, and for your help in sustaining us over the past two years. We can’t wait to write the next chapter in Cincinnati Opera’s amazing story together.

Sincerely,

2

GREETINGS FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT

A

s I write this greeting, I continue to reflect with amazement and pride on Cincinnati Opera’s 2021 Summer at Summit. Likewise, I cannot help but be deeply humbled and moved by the way our community rose up to demonstrate support for the company during this unprecedented year. Just a few short weeks ago, thousands of you gathered on Summit Park’s Great Lawn to help celebrate the return of live opera to our community. So many of you bought tickets and donated generously, traveled to a new venue, invited friends into your “pod,” and embraced the unpredictability of the outdoor experience. You laughed out loud, perhaps you also cried, and you cheered on our incredible artists, many of whom were returning to the live stage for the first time since the start of the pandemic. Prior to our Summer at Summit, many of you tuned in to watch the company’s first all-digital Winter Festival. And others of you joined us for lively pop-up performances by our Share the Love Truck Tour throughout Greater Cincinnati. As we continue to navigate the pandemic, these programs serve as vivid and vibrant reminders of the power and resilience of art in the face of the most difficult circumstances. Art can heal us when we’re hurting, and art can connect us. Art deepens our empathy and engenders hope. And as Cincinnati Opera continues to so inspiringly demonstrate, art will always find a way. I offer my deepest gratitude to each person who had a hand in conceiving, building, performing, supporting, and attending Cincinnati Opera’s extraordinary Summer at Summit and additional 2021 programs. And I know you’ll join me in offering special thanks to the Cincinnati Opera staff, who have tackled every hurdle over the last two years with resolve and ingenuity. The enthusiasm shared by all who are connected to this company is the reason it has thrived for 101 years and why its future feels so incredibly exciting. Thank you for supporting us along this journey. With thanks,

Liz Kathman Grubow Board President

A Glorious Reinvention LIVE OPERA RETURNED TO CINCINNATI FOR SUMMER AT SUMMIT

I

n September 2020, Cincinnati Opera announced its intention to return to Music Hall and SCPA for the upcoming year’s productions. Following the cancellation of our 100th Anniversary Season due to the shutdowns required by the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 Summer Festival would be a return to normal operations, a return to business as usual. Except... As the calendar turned from 2020 to 2021, “normal” remained evasive. The pandemic continued to put singers at particularly high risk for illness and to limit the number of patrons who could safely gather for performances indoors. With the health of our artists, staff, and audiences as top priority, we knew we

would need to reimagine our original plans to make good on our promise of producing beautiful, magical, and thrilling opera performances while keeping everyone safe. Even as we were pulling together elements of a traditional season, work was simultaneously moving forward on a second track, a “Plan B” option that could successfully be implemented should pandemic challenges persist into the new year. With that possibility a probability and then a certainty, we outlined a long list of requirements for a new, outdoor venue—a central location; room for significant numbers of socially distanced opera fans; a stage capable of supporting large-scale, professional productions;

plentiful on-site amenities such as parking and dining; and the willingness to host a continuous, monthlong Cincinnati Opera residency. Locations were brainstormed, investigated, and one by one eliminated. Then, on a cold January day, a small group of Opera employees traveled to the heart of Blue Ash to explore the potential of performing on an open, three-acre lawn in the city’s beautiful Summit Park. The rest, as they say, was history. Over the next six months, Opera staff, board members, partners, and numerous supporters worked quickly and tirelessly to write what would become another unique chapter in the company’s already celebrated story. On July 11, 2021—fifty years after presenting our final open-air season at our first performance home, the Cincinnati Zoo—we returned to the outdoors to launch the next century of opera in Cincinnati. Nearly 1,000 enthusiastic guests turned out on a cloudy but (thankfully) rainless evening for our free Opera in the Park concert, which featured musical highlights from the current and future seasons. A little less than a week later, Carmen kicked off the official production schedule, with openings for Tosca and The Barber of Seville following over the next few days. Summer at Summit was a season that was never supposed to be, a season planned over hundreds of video calls from spare bedrooms, home offices, and kitchen tables. It was a season that saw the reinvention of what an opera theater could look like and the near-constant evolution of what performances during a pandemic would allow. It was a season that boasted all the time-honored hallmarks associated with Cincinnati Opera performances—glorious singing, inspiring storytelling, and enchanting music from internationally renowned guest artists, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and the Cincinnati Opera Chorus—presented in an innovative and decidedly high-tech setting under the stars. When maestro Ramón Tebar gestured the first downbeat of Carmen’s familiar overture, he marked a welcome end to nearly two long years since Cincinnati Opera had last performed onstage. In a letter to the company, Christopher Milligan, the Opera’s Harry Fath General Director & CEO, celebrated the occasion with a sentiment soon to be echoed by all who attended this one-of-a-kind season, which had sold out before it had even begun. “Twenty years from now,” he wrote, “when we hear someone mention Summer at Summit—that time, during the pandemic, when Cincinnati Opera found a way to perform in spite of the challenges—each of us can say, ‘I was there, and it was glorious.’”

Ana María Martínez, seen from the wings, made her Cincinnati Opera debut in Tosca.

Kazem Abdullah conducted the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra for Opera in the Park.

Behind the Tower OUTDOOR OPERA GOES HIGH TECH

How big is Cincinnati Opera‘s Summer at Summit Stage?

M

usic Hall’s Springer Auditorium was built to be a temple of music, with technical and acoustical capabilities renowned the world over. Mother Nature, on the other hand, possesses a musicality all her own. But she also presents formidable challenges to artists attempting to transform her domain into a theater capable of presenting large-scale opera productions, as our staff learned this summer. Lyla Forlani, in her first season as Cincinnati Opera’s director of production, relied on the professionals from Arkansas’s Rock City Staging— partnering with Thomas Hase, our lighting director and resident lighting designer, and technicians from Cincinnati’s IATSE-Local 5—to convert Summit Park’s permanent performance platform into a temporary stage worthy of hosting the nation’s biggest rock bands—or, in this case, international opera stars. The state-of-the-art structure was complemented by a hyperreal immersive soundscape, the creation of designer Jonathan Burke and L-Acoustics, ensuring crystal-clear vocals across the entire 450-foot depth of the park’s Great Lawn. Working for nearly a week under extreme conditions that included 98-degree heat, a deluge or two, and even a few rainbows, the team soon set the stage for an unforgettable season. Despite the challenges, the outcome was an unqualified success. Reporting for Opera News, Joe Law wrote, “The company took on unprecedented challenges: presenting opera safely for everyone involved, creating satisfying condensed versions of familiar favorites, and reconciling nineteenth-century performance practices with modern technology. They have every reason to be proud of the results.”

The video team, housed inside the Opera Express truck, worked in real time to translate the onstage experience to two giant screens at each side of the stage.

As always, Cincinnati Opera performances were enhanced by partnerships with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Cincinnati Opera Chorus.

When completed, the stage’s temporary roof structure was 115 feet wide, 55 feet deep, and 32 feet tall.

Speakers flanked the Great Lawn’s ellipse, creating a hyperreal soundscape.

Forty-foot towers at each side of the stage housed hundreds of sound and lighting instruments.

The immersive sound design courtesy of Jonathan Burke (pictured) and L-Acoustics included individual microphones for every principal singer, chorus member, and musical instrument—nearly 120 total inputs to the sound mixing console.

Crews used approximately 1,400 gallons of paint throughout the summer to divide Summit Park’s three-acre Great Lawn into 393 socially distanced seating pods.
