From the General and Artistic Directors Friends, How we have missed you! Nearly nine months ago—March 13, 2020, to be exact—we packed up our laptops and reference books from Music Hall and began to work remotely. One month later, we announced the cancellation of our 100th Anniversary Season. Being apart is an unnatural state for an opera company. Simply put, we thrive on collaboration and live for the moment when the lights go down and the curtain goes up. The value of such experiences seems even more profound in their absence. At Cincinnati Opera, we’ve found inspiration in this moment. After all, creativity and resilience have been essential threads in the fabric of our history. The company was established in the wake of the 1918 flu pandemic and survived the Great Depression, two world wars, and national financial crises. Yet, the art has endured, thanks to the unflagging spirit of the many artists, administrators, volunteers, and supporters who, time and again, have chosen to believe in the promise of opera. While our 100th anniversary hasn’t quite played out as we’d hoped, we’re excited by the new programs and valued community connections that have been birthed from this time. We invite you to read on to learn more. To all who have helped and continue to help sustain Cincinnati Opera through financial support, encouragement, and belief in our mission, we offer our deepest thanks. This opera company will endure, and we will sing again. Sincerely,
Christopher Milligan The Harry Fath General Director & CEO
Evans Mirageas The Harry T. Wilks Artistic Director

From the Board President Dear friends, Last April, when it became evident Cincinnati Opera’s 100th Anniversary Season was not to be, it was a truly heartbreaking moment for those of us who love this company and believe in its mission. In an instant, years of production planning evaporated, hundreds of seasonal employees were out of work, and the stage was suddenly silent. But then, extraordinary things started to happen. The company embraced new means of connecting with audiences and has developed new avenues for artistic expression. The stories told in this report describe just a few of the many creative thoughts and initiatives that have emerged over the last several months. I’m so proud to say that the entire Opera family has leaned into an ethos of ingenuity with such passion and determination in the midst of unprecedented challenges.
Liz Kathman Grubow
We are so grateful to you for the part you’ve played in supporting Cincinnati Opera. I close every board meeting with these words, “Opera is beauty. Opera is truth. Thank you for making that real for so many.” Now more than ever, those words ring true. Looking forward to inviting you along for our next splendid century! With gratitude,
Liz Kathman Grubow Board President

2020—The Season that Wasn’t Cincinnati Opera is only the second opera company in the U.S. to turn 100, and our 100th Anniversary Season was poised to make history. But fate had other plans: a near-complete shutdown of all performing arts activities throughout Cincinnati and the nation due to the rapid spread of the novel coronavirus. On April 15, Cincinnati Opera’s Board of Trustees made the difficult decision to cancel our 2020 Summer Festival. At the time of cancellation, artists from around the world were just a few weeks away from traveling to Cincinnati to begin rehearsals for our opening production, Rossini’s sparkling comedy The Barber of Seville. With superstar mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard slated to sing the role of Rosina, our vibrant production was originally created for the Glimmerglass Festival by the prolific designer John Conklin.
Also planned for 2020 was our first-ever production of Antonín Dvořák’s beautiful and tragic fairy tale, Rusalka. Based on the same legend as Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid, Rusalka was to star Kim-Lillian Strebel in the title role, in an “otherworldly” (Bachtrack) production created by Eric Simonson for Minnesota Opera. We were to present not one, but two world premiere operas in 2020. As a follow-up to Gregory Spears and Greg Pierce’s enormously successful Fellow Travelers (2016), Cincinnati Opera commissioned Spears to develop the new opera Castor and Patience. He collaborated with librettist Tracy K. Smith, Pulitzer Prize winner and former U.S. poet laureate, to tell the story of two African American cousins at odds over a parcel of land in the American South that had been part of their family for generations.
The much-anticipated world premieres of Castor and Patience (left) and Fierce (right), originally scheduled for 2020, will take place during our 2021 Summer Festival.
Also making its world premiere was Fierce, by composer and Cincinnati native William Menefield with a libretto by Northern Kentucky-based author Sheila Williams. Developed in partnership with three local creative organizations serving teenage youth— WordPlay Cincy, Music Resource CenterCincinnati, and i.imagine—Fierce introduces us to four teenage girls who face struggles with school, family, and friendship, and follows their journeys toward finding empowerment. Closing the centennial season was to be a spectacular production of Verdi’s epic Aida created by noted British fashion designer Zandra Rhodes. One of the most beloved operas in Cincinnati Opera’s history, Aida was to feature an all-star cast helmed by Mary Elizabeth Williams, Ronnita Miller, Marco Berti, Reginald Smith, Jr., and Morris Robinson. While we mourn the lost 2020 season, we affirm our commitment to the planned projects and are pleased to share that three are scheduled to appear in the summer of 2021— The Barber of Seville, Castor and Patience, and Fierce. (For a complete 2021 Season listing, please see p. 29.) We’re also actively planning to bring back both Rusalka and Aida in upcoming seasons and look forward to sharing those details as future programming takes shape. The summer of 2020 was not what we planned, but as we pivoted to producing virtual performances and events, we discovered new ways to inspire and bring joy through the amazing art form of opera.
We thank these sponsors for their generous support: Patricia A. Corbett Estate and Trust

THE ARTIST RELIEF FUND We offer sincere thanks to the many generous individuals who supported Cincinnati Opera’s 2020 Artist Relief Fund. Established through a matching gift from The Harry T. Wilks Family Foundation, Nanci Wilks Lanni and Nick Lanni, and Barbara Wilks, this fund provided important relief to more than 300 artists and artisans whose livelihoods were affected by our season cancellation. Please visit the donor listing on p. 18, where contributors to the Artist Relief Fund are designated with an asterisk. 6
In the News We were delighted to be featured in several local, national, and international media outlets this year, with stories covering our 100th Anniversary, our virtual programs, and more. Here are a few highlights.

Our Commitment to Anti-Racism Since May, our nation has faced an overdue awakening to systemic racism. The killing of George Floyd sparked protests across the country against police brutality and racial injustice, as well as calls for widespread change. In our own hometown, demonstrators joined together throughout our city in support of this cause and to state, unequivocally, that Black Lives Matter. Conversations around racial discrimination, inequity, and representation have also emerged from all corners of the opera community. Virtual discussions, such as one hosted by LA Opera titled “Lift Every Voice,” featured Black artists and administrators— including Cincinnati Opera Artistic Advisor Morris Robinson—talking about the hurdles they face working in our industry. We are grateful to these individuals who have stepped forward to share their personal, often painful
stories, and to shine a light on problematic aspects of our industry. Moving forward, we know that our focus must be on dismantling racism—on our stages, in our hiring practices, and in our recruitment of board members and volunteers. In our public Statement of Support and Commitment shared in the wake of the deaths of Mr. Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Elijah McClain, and too many others, we promised to hold ourselves accountable as follows: • We will listen with deeper attention to our audience and our community.
In August, Cincinnati Opera Artistic Advisor Morris Robinson (top left) hosted a Virtual Opera Chat with mezzo-soprano J’Nai Bridges and tenor Lawrence Brownlee. As part of their conversation, they reflected on their participation in LA Opera’s “Lift Every Voice” panel discussion, which covered matters of race and racism within the opera industry.
• We will continue to work toward diversifying our staff, our board, and our audience. • We will continue our commitment to hiring Black artists, creators, and storytellers. • We will continue to partner with organizations whose work focuses on uplifting Black communities and communities of color. • We will model respect for all.
Tracy L. Wilson, Director of Community Engagement and Education, co-emcees the Violin Vigil for Elijah McClain on July 12.

To support these intentions, we’re taking a series of actions to guide us in our anti-racist work and support equitable representation in all aspects of what we do. This work is critical and ongoing, and we will continue to produce opera experiences that inspire compassion, respect, and kinship, and which point us all toward a better future.
Virtual Programs ARIA INSPIRATION
Beginning in March, Cincinnati Opera initiated a significant expansion of our digital content. This opportunity was one we embraced with gusto, and staff members enthusiastically turned their attention to reimagining the operagoing experience in a virtual world.
In Cincinnati Opera’s new Apartment Arias series, stars from Cincinnati Opera’s 2020 season share soul-stirring performances from the intimacy of their homes. Selections have been curated by the artists themselves and span a variety of genres, from tenor Aaron Blake’s “O sole mio” to mezzo-soprano Ronnita Miller’s touching take on Randy Newman’s “I Think It’s Going to Rain Today.”
We launched Cincinnati Opera’s free, digital programming hub, Opera at Home, to provide a platform not only for showcasing beautiful singing, but also for hosting insightful discussions, for engaging with students and families, and, ultimately, for continuing to create community among opera lovers. CELEBRATING PRIDE
Presented by Cincinnati Opera’s Center Stage Board Associates, our popular Opera & Yoga series migrated to an online format. Led by local yoga teachers, each session incorporated a live performance by an opera artist to help participants achieve mindfulness during their practice.
What’s it like to be part of the LGBTQ+ community in the opera industry? In honor of Pride celebrations around the world, Evans Mirageas emceed Opera Pride, an illuminating discussion with an all-star panel of opera artists. Guests included tenor Frederick Ballentine, mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton, baritone Lucia Lucas, and composer Gregory Spears.
COMEDY TONIGHT! Opera sometimes has a reputation for being dark, gloomy, and tragic—yet, some of opera’s greatest classics are its sparkling comedies. In the Community While our virtual programs have been in full swing, we’ve continued to come together in the real world, safely, to connect with our community.
TAKING THE ARIA ON THE ROAD With restrictions in place limiting public gatherings, we were inspired to find a way to continue sharing live opera with our community. So, what if we performed from someplace unconventional? Better yet, someplace portable? Opera staff teamed up with bass-baritone Christian Pursell, who is also the devoted caretaker of a vintage, baby blue Chevy pickup, and the Share the Love Truck Tour was born. From the get-go, the tour was also focused on giving back—attendees were invited to bring along goods that would be donated to local organizations serving our neighbors in need. The tour made its first stop in College Hill, with Pursell performing a mix of opera and pop

and accompanying himself on keyboard. It has since visited neighborhoods around the city, resulting in donations valued at $1,500 (and growing) for our charitable partners. The tour has also visited UC Health facilities in West Chester and Clifton, where singers serenaded frontline workers as a demonstration of gratitude for their dedicated service. In November, the tour stopped by the Hamilton County Board of Elections to sing for individuals in the early-voting queue. Keep an eye open for that baby blue truck as the the tour rolls on—visit cincinnatiopera.org for event schedules and information.

A SPECIAL CENTENNIAL: Herta Moore (center), a Cincinnati Opera subscriber for an amazing 50+ years, turned 100 the same year that we did! To celebrate, Evans Mirageas (right) and opera artists paid Herta a personal birthday visit. SINGING FOR SENIORS: Marco Panuccio and Victoria Okafor perform an alfresco concert for residents of the Deupree House senior living community.
IT TAKES A VILLAGE: Members of the Opera staff play games with children at the Villages of Roll Hill.
LENDING A HAND: We were happy to assist our longtime partners at Allen Temple A.M.E. Church with sorting donations to their food pantry.
CONGRATS, GRADS! When our neighbors at the School for Creative and Performing Arts converted their graduation into a car parade, Opera staff cheered along from the steps of Music Hall.

Cincinnati Opera at 100 “The reason why Cincinnati Opera has made it to 100 is because they’ve always had their finger on the pulse and the heartbeat of their audiences.” Despite the fact that Cincinnati Opera’s 100th Anniversary Season was not to proceed as we’d originally hoped, we were determined to mark this extraordinary milestone with an equally extraordinary celebration.

The Patty Beggs Legacy Patty Beggs spent 36 years with Cincinnati Opera—first as its marketing director, then as its CEO and General Director—and her official retirement from the company took place on August 31, 2020. A public celebration of her extraordinary contributions was intended to occur during our centennial season, but that was sadly short-circuited by the pandemic. Nevertheless, her decades of dedication to the company, the industry, and to our community deserve our deepest respect and gratitude. As the Opera’s new marketing director in 1984, Patty focused on the challenge of falling attendance. She created attention-grabbing marketing campaigns that referenced popular culture, and her efforts repeatedly filled Music Hall’s 3,000+ seats. When she took over management of the company in 1997, Patty oversaw a budget that grew from $4 million to $9.1 million in 2019. She also achieved a doubling of the endowment to nearly $30 million.
an integral role in the historic performance venue’s extraordinary recent renovation. As a prominent arts leader, Patty encouraged Cincinnati Opera and other regional arts organizations toward greater diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. In 2019, she led “Power of Her,” a citywide celebration focused on women leaders, creative artists, and philanthropists. Regularly cited as a mentor and role model, Patty cultivated close relationships with artists, board members, colleagues at other companies, and her devoted staff. Known for her kindness, generosity, and humility, Patty was a prolific thank-you note writer, a practice that inspired the company’s 2019 gala theme, “Love Letters to Patty,” a celebration of Patty’s extraordinary career. The entire Opera board showed their esteem by establishing the Patricia K. Beggs Fund for Championing
Patty was a champion for forward-thinking programming. Grand opera continued to be a mainstay, but new works became an important component of every season, which helped push Cincinnati Opera to become one of the most respected companies in the industry. In 2005, Patty spearheaded the creation of the Corbett Opera Center, transforming a storage area in Music Hall’s north wing into administrative space. She also played Left: Patty with the promotional artwork for Cincinnati Opera’s 1998 production of Tosca, created by artist Rafal Olbinski.

Patty Beggs (cont.) THE PATRICIA K. BEGGS FUND FOR CHAMPIONING WOMEN’S VOICES In 2019, Cincinnati Opera’s Board of Trustees established The Patricia K. Beggs Fund for Championing Women’s Voices to honor Patty’s extraordinary career. The fund will support the presentation of work by established and emerging female composers, librettists, conductors, and directors, as well as to promote diversity and gender parity within our art form. Blind Injustice on CD
or call (513) 768-5511.
In 2019, Cincinnati Opera presented the world premiere of the critically acclaimed new opera Blind Injustice, with music by Scott Davenport Richards and libretto by David Cote. You can soon relive this “moving new work” (Opera News)—a recording of the opera will be released in February 2021 on the Naxos label. Hailed as “a powerful piece of music theater” (The Wall Street Journal), the opera explored the true stories of six individuals who were tried, imprisoned, and ultimately freed by the Ohio Innocence Project (OIP). Based on the book by OIP director Mark Godsey and directed by CCM’s Robin Guarino, Blind Injustice featured emotionally resonant performances by its stellar cast, as well as members of the Young Professionals Choral Collective and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, conducted by John Morris Russell. Major support for the Blind Injustice recording has been provided by Dianne and J. David Rosenberg. Visit cincinnatiopera.org for more information.
