The North Region is a Focal Point for Growth J
ust what is the North? It’s the growing area at the focal point of the Cincinnati-Dayton megalopolis, the network of large and small communities evolving into a single urban area between the cities of Cincinnati and Dayton. It’s roughly defined by the editors of Cincy Magazine as the area north of state Route 126/Ronald Regan Highway in Hamilton County and south of state Route 122 across Butler and Warren counties. That’s just geography. The North is also where thousands of people live, work and play. It includes some of southwest Ohio’s fastest-growing communities such as West Chester Township, the city of Mason and Deerfield Township and some of its oldest communities such as the city of Hamilton (named for Alexander Hamilton and founded in 1791) and the city of Lebanon (which dates from 1802). It includes thousands of small- and medium-sized businesses and some of the region’s largest and best-known employers such as Procter & Gamble Co., GE Aviation, the Kroger Co. and Anthem BlueCross BlueShield Ohio. It is home to the growing “Health Care Highway” along Interstate 75 with new facilities by some of the region’s largest health-care providers such as the Christ Hospital Health Network, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Premier Health’s Atrium Medical Center and UC Health’s West Chester Hospital. It’s also home to the regional campuses of Miami University, Sinclair Community College’s Mason center and vocational education centers such as Butler Tech, Great Oaks Career campuses and the Warren County Career Center. The North also offers a variety of retail and entertainment options such as Miami Valley Gaming and King’s Island to Jungle Jim’s International Market in Fairfield and Liberty Center, the multiuse community in Liberty Township. n 6

Top Eight Entertainment Destinations No matter what time of year it is there are always plenty of entertainment options in the northern suburbs of the Greater Cincinnati region. From the popular Kings Island amusement park to the back-to-nature canoe trips down the Little Miami River the North provides all types of enjoyment, relaxation and excitement for residents and visitors alike.
Great Wolf Lodge Indoor Park
When it’s cold outside families can still satisfy their itch to swim at the Great Wolf Lodge Indoor Park, which is located next to Kings Island. Great Wolf Lodge Indoor Park features an indoor water park with slides, raft rides and a water-fort treehouse. For landlubbers, Great Wolf Lodge Indoor Park also offers games, adventures and lots of activities for the kids.
Morgan’s Canoe Livery at Ft. Ancient
Built in 1969 at 5701 state Route 350 in Oregonia, this was the first livery on the Little Miami River and it remains the only canoe, kayak and rafting outfitter on the Ft. Ancient Gorge of the Little Miami River. In addition, at the facility’s Riverside Campground and Cabins, located three miles downriver from Ft. Ancient, visitors can stay and camp along the river.
Kings Island
The king of entertainment venues in the North is Kings Island amusement park in Mason, which opened in 1972 and drew an estimated 3.38 million visitors in 2016, according to the Themed Entertainment Association. Roller coaster fans can enjoy 15 coasters, including the park’s newest one, Mystic Timbers, which was voted as the Best New Ride in 2017 by Amusement Today. EnterTRAINment Junction at 7379 Squire Court in West Chester is the family entertainment center for train enthusiasts. This facility includes the world’s largest indoor train display, a children’s play area where kids can climb, slide and crawl through tunnels and the A-Maze-N Funhouse designed like an old-time circus midway. Kids can also engineer their own locomotive around a track in a hand-cranked railroad car or hop on board a narrow gauge train ride.

The Beach Waterpark
Another attraction in Mason is The Beach Waterpark, a 35-acre facility with slides, rides and attractions all surrounded by live palm trees, white ocean sands, waterfalls and crashing waves. A zip line even takes riders soaring high above The Beach Waterpark’s heated wave pool. There’s also swimming lessons, birthday party packages and an indoor arcade available. One of the newest entertainment destinations in the area is Top Golf, a high-tech driving range located in West Chester Township at 9568 Water Front Drive. Amenities include more than 100 climate-controlled hitting bays, leagues, lessons, a full-service restaurant and bars, private event spaces and meeting rooms, along with a rooftop terrace with fire pit.

Ohio Renaissance Festival
The Ohio Renaissance Festival takes place at 10542 E. state Route 73 in Waynesville every weekend in September and October at a 30-acre permanent village that has been authentically and historically recreated in the flavor of 16th Century England. Entertainment includes full-armored jousting, musicians, dancers, comedians, jugglers, sword-fighters, storytellers and hundreds of costumed performers in nearly 100 shows daily. The festival also includes arts and crafts, food and drinks.
