Choosing a school
Bishop Fenwick families enjoy the community feel.
The Catholic School Difference Local schools teach more than subjects like math to prepare students for the future By Corinne Minard

hile there are plenty of quality schools in the Tristate, local educators say that Catholic schools’ focus on educating the whole person is what sets them apart. Virtues, service, academic knowledge and more are woven together in Catholic education in order to teach students all they’ll need to be intelligent, compassionate adults. “St. Gertrude’s educational approach prepares young people for the unique challenges of the 21st century world,” says Leah Naumann, a creative writing teacher and parent at St. Gertrude School in Madeira. The kindergarten through eighth grade school places a heavy emphasis on virtue and faith formation in addition to incorporating innovative learning methods. The school, which is also home to the Dominican Order, does this in several ways, such as teaching the Catechesis of 4
the Good Shepherd, having a household system that connects older and younger students, and incorporating the VIRTUE system. “The Catholic Church uses the Theological and Cardinal virtues to effectively describe the way the Christian life should be lived. Faith, Hope and Charity along with Prudence, Justice, Fortitude and Temperance are practiced at St. Gertrude daily, helping students and families to
grow in love for the Lord and each other,” says Naumann. These virtues are then applied throughout the students’ day in their classes. The outdoor classroom, for example, enables students to get hands-on experience with certain science topics while exercising virtues like respect and stewardship. “A deeper understanding of faith compliments the formal education offered at St. Gertrude School, allowing students to be-

come the very best version of themselves,” adds Naumann. “This school community provides a lived reality that fosters relationships and changes the lives of its students in a most profound way.” Bishop Fenwick High School, a coeducational college preparatory high school in Franklin, also emphasizes the whole person. “Catholic schools join with the family to help students understand their special place in the family, the church and society. While not all families who come to Catholic schools are Catholic, all share experiences of faith and values,” says Natalie McDonald, marketing and communication director for Bishop Fenwick. Bishop Fenwick regularly points to its four talons—faith, compassion, integrity and service—which are incorporated in everything from classes to retreats. For
example, students can participate in service projects all fours years at the school. McDonald says that this helps students become strong in self-discipline, commitment and respect. In addition to adding to students’ spiritual, social and emotional well-being, schools like Bishop Fenwick also prepare students for the academic rigor of college. The school has a student-to-teacher ratio of 14 to 1, a 1:1 technology program featuring the Microsoft Surface Pro, and many AP and College Credit Plus courses. As a result the school, like most Catholic institutions, scores significantly above average in standardized tests. The school also says that 97% of its graduates attend a post-secondary institution and 78% of the class of 2019 received scholarships totaling in $17 million. “Along with athletic, social and academic advantages, the community at
Bishop Fenwick makes the investment wor t hwh i le. St udent s a nd fa m i l ies that attend Bishop Fenw ick are part of the Fenw ick family forever,” adds McDonald. Both St. Gertrude School and Bishop Fenwick High School acknowledge that there is an expense to a Catholic education, but say there are resources for families who need assistance. Both schools offer tuition assistance and participate in the Ohio Ed Choice Program. Both McDonald and Naumann also say that what students get in addition to a formal education makes Catholic schools worthwhile. “Catholic schools strive to create a special bond among the students, the home, the school and the church, so that all share the strong sense of community,” says McDonald. n

Open Houses
Opening the Door to Education High school open houses offer families an opportunity to find a private school that fits their needs By Kevin Michell

Archbishop McNicholas High School is one of many Catholic schools that hosts an open house.

and various other forms of pre-enrollment visitation take on greater importance. Some area schools, like Elder and Saint Ursula Academy, also offer shadow days, which allow an eighth grader to accompany a current student through their class schedule. Many have other one-day or evening events outside of the open houses that highlight student life or other aspects of the Catholic high school experience. But attending an open house is one of the primary ways for prospective students and their families to get the entire experience—from classroom tours and question-and-answer sessions to spirit demonstrations and glimpses into student programs—all in one day. Woodall says it’s a way for each Catholic high school to display their commitment to faith and academics while also displaying some of the unique qualities each has, citing Purcell Marian’s career-minded courses in science, technology, engineering and mathematics and La Salle’s drama department and renovated black box theater as examples. “A lot of [each] open house falls back to current students,” Woodall says, “because it’s really the current students leading the charge for so much of it.” That student involvement in each open house provides a much clearer picture for prospective students about how they think they’ll fit in at a school—the current students become ambassadors that can ratify a family’s first
incinnati’s Catholic high schools always have an eye on prospective students yet to enter ninth grade. For middle school students and their families who are thinking about where to attend high school, the secondary education institutions of the archdiocese hold open houses to help them experience what its schools can offer. Vince Woodall, deputy superintendent for operational vitality with the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, and Adam Kremer, the archdiocese’s high school regional director, describe it as the first way for students and families to experience the individual atmospheres, offerings and benefits of Cincinnati’s Catholic high schools. “I think when you go to the open houses for our high schools, you experience something very different at each of them,” says Kremer. Both acknowledge that parents shop around among possible high schools more than they used to, so the open houses

choice for high school or make them think more highly of one they weren’t initially considering. While their children are engaging with current students and other members of each school during the open houses, parents can interact with teachers and administrative faculty to ask their questions. These sessions are as much about parents feeling good about where they’re sending their child to high school as they are about prospective students finding the place where they’ll spend the majority of the next four years. n

An Innovative Education Cardinal Pacelli School in Mt. Lookout uses diverse teaching methods to prepare students for the future By Corinne Minard
P
roject-based learning is just one of the methods that Cardinal Pacellli School, a Catholic elementary school in Mt. Lookout, uses to ready its students for the world of tomorrow. “We live in a world where we’re always taking in a lot of information. We must have the ability to discriminate and make sense of it. That is what project-based learning is all about: finding solutions to problems,” says Alisa Fisher, communications manager for Our Lord Christ the King Church and Cardinal Pacelli School. Project-based learning is a methodology that has students gain knowledge through active learning—they often work on a project for a long period of time, engaging with the topic through creative thinking and participation, allowing them to create a relationship with the material.
This method is used by teachers in all grade levels, but one example is the eighth graders’ Capstone Project. The students are asked to identity a problem affecting society and develop a way to improve or mitigate it, thus combining problemsolving skills with the Catholic tradition of community service. “[The eighth graders] get to choose what they work on. It’s something that speaks to them, to their heart, and it’s leaving the world a better place hopefully,” says says eighth-grade teacher Katie Dupler. For example, student JJ Brannock used a program called Appypie to create a free smart phone app to help people locate stops along the Cincinnati Streetcar Route. It also enables users to share their location to make it easier to meet up with others.
JJ Brannock holds the app he created to help people locate stops along the Cincinnati Streetcar Route. He used a program called Appy Pie to create the smartphone app.
Methods like project-based learning have allowed Cardinal Pacelli to remain forward thinking. “Cardinal Pacelli is innovative and embraces diverse learning methods. Teachers certainly recognize the value of it,” says Fisher. n

Private School Tuition Aid Catholic Community Foundation The Catholic Community Foundation for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati Inc. implements and oversees the tuition assistance program and approves other funds designated for Catholic educational initiatives. The Catholic Community Foundation provides needs-based elementary and high school tuition assistance scholarships that can be used at any Catholic elementary school within the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, with approximately 80% going to students in kindergarten through eighth grade and the other 20% going toward high school students. The money for the scholarships is raised through the One Faith, One Hope, One Love capital campaign. About $65 million of the $165 million raised by the campaign is being used for Catholic education in the archdiocese. About $50 million of the $65 million is allocated for the tuition assistance for Catholic School families and
$15 million is allotted for programs and personnel that foster educational quality in Catholic schools and parishes. Awards range from $250 to $1,000 per student. The Catholic Community Foundation also awards 9-12 grade needs-based grants up to $1,000. Unlike the grant eligibility for the K-8 grade students, at the high school level these grants can be used along with state-funded Parental Choice programs, such as EdChoice.
School-Based Scholarships
Ohio’s EdChoice Scholarship Program
The Corporate Work Study Program (like at DePaul Cristo Rey High School) makes high-quality, college prep education possible for students with economic need. Students are able to assume the role of an employee at businesses and not-for-profits throughout the Tristate to pay the cost of their education. Students contribute to the cost of their education by working five full days each month, providing them priceless exposure to a professional environment while aiding the cost of their education. n
Ohio’s EdChoice Scholarship Program provides students in underperforming public schools the opportunity to attend participating private schools. The scholarship amount is $4,650 for students in grades K-8 and $6,000 for students in grades 9-12. To qualify, students must be from a lowerrated public school and be from a family with a low income. The EdChoice Expansion Program is another grant based on income alone.
In addition to scholarships provided by the state and the archdiocese, individual schools may offer their own scholarships. Scholarships can be based on income, academic success, athletics or other criteria. Make sure to check with any school you’re considering for any scholarships for which your child is eligible.
