DID YOU KNOW?

Tucked away in a quiet residential neighborhood in Springfield sits one of the nation’s most beautiful and unusual folk-art masterpieces: The Hartman Rock Garden. More than 250,000 stones make up the garden’s 50 structures—including a castle and drawbridge, a replica of the White House, a tiny Hoover Dam, and a de-

piction of Custer’s Last Stand. H.G. (Ben) Hartman began constructing the garden when he lost his job in 1932—the midst of the Great Depression. The project began as the construction of a simple fishing pond but soon expanded to become a 12year artistic pursuit. Today, visitors can wander through his imaginative wonderland free of charge, from dawn to dusk, 365 days a year. C U LT U R E W O R K S . O R G

he Dayton Region is known as the birthplace of aviation, the invention capital of the United States, and yes, the Land of Funk. An easy and fun way to get started exploring the region’s rich history is by taking a stroll on the Dayton Inventors River Walk at RiverScape MetroPark (see Five Rivers MetroParks p. 25). Set along the Great Miami River in downtown Dayton, the River Walk features 150 brick tiles commemorating Dayton Region innovations, plus seven oversized, interactive public art pieces honoring some of our region’s greatest inventions—including the pop-top can, the ice cube tray, the cash register, and, of course, the airplane.
