Culture Works is the funding, advocacy, and service organization that passionately inspires, supports, and sustains arts and culture in the Dayton Region. Our annual CAMPAIGN FOR THE ARTS mobilizes individuals, local companies, and foundations in support of the Dayton Region’s arts and culture. Funds raised through the Campaign provide Community Arts Grants for many of our major arts organizations. Culture Works supports individual artists by administering the ARTIST OPPORTUNITY GRANT program, which provides grants for Montgomery County artists to pursue professional development opportunities and complete new works. This program is made possible by funding from the Montgomery County Arts & Cultural District. Emerging artists and arts leaders can apply for the CULTURE WORKS LEONARD P. ROBERTS SCHOLARSHIP—named after the past chairman of the Dayton Performing Arts Fund (now Culture Works). The Vandalia Art Park features an eight-acre walkable art trail with two annual art installations and several permanent pieces. The first two phases of the Vandalia Rotary Amphitheater are complete and available for use with events planned for fall of 2019. Visiting the park is free, and various activities and art initiatives take place throughout the year. The Garst Museum features vibrant exhibits about remarkable individuals who hailed from Darke County: Lowell Thomas, CBS broadcaster and explorer; Annie Oakley, world-famous sharpshooter; and Zachary Lansdowne, commander of the USS Shenandoah. The museum also houses an extensive exhibit honoring Native American history, Fort Greene Ville, the signing of The Greene Ville Peace Treaties, and the fascinating series of events that ultimately opened the gates to the west.

The British Transportation Museum is an all-volunteer nonprofit with a mission of preservation and education about British transportation. It has an eclectic, ever-growing collection of 46 cars (plus 10 on loan), 15 bicycles, an Irish boat, memorabilia, and a library. Founded 19 years ago, the museum moved into its 83,000-square-foot home in 2015. This is the only effort of this kind in the Americas focused on British transportation.

Situated on a bluff 235 feet above the Little Miami River Valley, the museum at Fort Ancient presents an overarching view of 15,000 years of Ohio history, while the prehistoric-themed garden offers a glimpse into how the prehistoric peoples of the area survived.

Springfield was once known as the end of the Historic National Road. The WACO Aircraft Company was the largest manufacturer of civil aircraft in the country in the late 1920s and early ‘30s and the designer of the CG4A glider used in WWII. The museum features two hangars of aircraft and memorabilia related to the factory and the employees who made it great. The WACO Learning Center (which is housed in its own building) nurtures aviation’s future by promoting science, technology, engineering, aviation, and math in the education of students and teachers.

Completed in 1908, the Westcott House is Frank Lloyd Wright’s only Prairie Style home in Ohio and one of the country’s finest Wright house museums. The Westcott House underwent a $5.3 million restoration in 2005, and each of its features—from art glass and original hardware to hand-decorated walls and massive urns—has been returned to its 1908 appearance. Founded in 1841, Woodland Cemetery is one of the nation’s oldest rural garden cemeteries and is a unique cultural, botanical, and educational resource in the heart of Dayton. The Richardsonian Romanesque gateway, chapel, and office, completed in 1889, are on the National Register of Historic Places, and the chapel features one of the finest original Tiffany windows in the country. Woodland is the final resting place of the Wright brothers, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Erma Bombeck, Charles Kettering, Gov. James M. Cox, John H. Patterson, George H. Mead, and over 109,000 others who made their lives in the Gem City.

Wright “B” Flyer Inc. is an all-volunteer, membership-based nonprofit headquartered at the Dayton-Wright brothers Airport. The group flies and displays look-alikes of the Wright brothers’ first production airplane, the Wright Model B Flyer. The group’s hangar at the Dayton-Wright brothers Airport is open three days a week as a free museum about the Wright brothers and their role in the development of aviation.

The Kettering Civic Band originated in 1959 as a 12-member ensemble at the Fairmont Presbyterian Church in Kettering. In 1960, it became part of the Kettering Adult School and is now sponsored by the City of Kettering as part of its Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department. The band consists of about 70 amateur volunteer musicians representing a wide range of professions and vocations, all sharing in the enjoyment of making music.
