Birth of a President HOME WHERE ULYSSES S. GRANT WAS BORN LOCATED 25 MILES EAST OF CINCINNATI By Eric Spangler
I
t may not be THE White House, but it is a white house where a former U.S. president was born. The quaint, onestory, timber-framed cottage 25 miles east of Cincinnati is where the 18th president of the United States, Ulysses S. Grant, was born. Nestled at the corner of U.S. 52 and state Route 232, the simple white house is now owned by the state of Ohio and managed by Historic New Richmond Inc. The house is where one of the most famous generals and commander of the Union armies during the American Civil War was born in Clermont County’s Point Pleasant. Inside the original one-room cottage visitors will find a pair of gloves Grant wore at his first inaugural ball, a strong box in which he carried his personal papers as president, personal stationary as president and his wallet that he carried during the Civil War as a general, says Greg Roberts, vice president of historic new Richmond Inc. The most personal item of Grant’s visitors can see is a lock of his hair. “We have a memorial locket with a lock of his hair,” says Roberts. There are also some Grant family related artifacts to replicate what the birthplace may have looked like at the time of his birth in 1822, he says. The house stands on the same spot near the mouth of Big Indian Creek at the Ohio River was where Grant was born—the first child of Jesse Root Grant, a tanner by trade, and his wife, Hannah—on April 27, 1822. The house is open to the public from May through September on Wednesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 1-5 p.m. and year round by appointment, says Bob Lees, a board member of Historic New Richmond Inc. Tours cost $3 for adults, $2 for seniors and $1 for children. 4

ABOVE: This house is where the 18th president of the United States, Ulysses S. Grant, was born in Point Pleasant. LEFT: Personal items from Grant and period artifacts fill the house.
Grant’s birthplace receives between 3,000 and 4,000 people each year, says Roberts. “The ironic thing about that is that they used to get—this is going back to the 1940s—there used to be 3,000 on a weekend,” he says. One of the most popular days for visitors is Grant’s birthday celebration, traditionally conducted on the Saturday closest to his April 27 birth. This year’s celebration will be conducted on his actual birthdate,
Lees says. Pl a n s a r e a l r e a d y under way for Grant’s 200th birthday celebration in 2022, he says. “A lot needs to be done between now and the near future,” says Lees. Although more people are expected to visit Grant’s birthplace on his 200th birthday it will most likely be unable to rival his 100th birthday celebration. “In 1922 the president of the United States (Warren G. Harding) actually came upriver on riverboat,” says Lees. And about 30,000 people also came upriver on a flotilla of riverboats to attend Grant’s birthday celebration, says Roberts. n
The Best of the East Celebration showed how much people love living in the East. From sandwich shops to dry cleaners, nursing facilities to preschools, attendees voted on their favorites to select this year’s winners at the Jan. 24 event at the Holiday Inn & Suites Cincinnati-Eastgate. Southern State Community College, Mercy Health, Streetside Brewery and Tide Dry Cleaners sponsored the event. The community partner was the Clermont Chamber of Commerce. The nonprofit partner was Angel’s Rest Animal Society. This year’s nonprofit beneficiary was KLiCWow. KLiCWow is a community project aligned with Connect Clermont that works to distribute free tablets to all Clermont County children ages 3 and 4 to prepare them for K-12. Read on to learn more about our winners and some of the East’s hidden gems.

Urban Grill on Main
6623 Main St., Newtown, 513-561-8000, urbangrillonmain.com What started as the popular and successful Urban Grill Food Truck in 2012 has rolled into the village of Newtown as the full-fledged restaurant Urban Grill on Main. It has continued its food-truck success and was voted the restaurant with the Best Fresh Catch (seafood) at the Best of the East event. Owners and in-laws Randy Reichelderfer and Betsy Eicher transformed an 1870s farmhouse into a cozy and casual restaurant in the heart of Newtown in 2017. In November 2018 they brought chef Adam Hensley on board, who has since has expanded the menu to include nightly dinner features and fresh seafood options, says Eicher. And when Eicher says “fresh” she means it. “We work with fish mongers right on the docks daily to get the most unique and freshest seafood possible,” she says. “Each item is prepared and served in an original and delicious way.”
Eicher says Urban Grill is committed to using locally sourced, fresh ingredients in unusual or unexpected combinations. And all that delicious food is then served in a comfortable space designed by herself and Reichelderfer. “Many of the handmade touches inside and out of our buildings were completed by Randy,” she says. “Many say the detail put into the menu and the building are what makes Urban Grill on Main special and comfortable at the same time.” Urban Grill on Main strives for a fun, informal atmosphere while providing food that satisfies and is fresh and easy to eat, she says. “Daily lunch and dinner features enable us and our guests to try new things, and adds variety to the menu,” says Eicher. The restaurant offers a specific nightly dinner feature each day of the week and always has its filet mignon and panseared chicken on the dinner menu, she says. Wednesday night is Rib Night, Thursday is Smoked Meatloaf Night, Friday and Saturdays it offers fresh fish features and Sunday is Pot Roast night, says Eicher. — ERIC SPANGLER 2 0 1 9 : : E X P LO R E T H E E A S T S I D E

Lehr’s Prime Market has been in Milford since 1960, but that doesn’t make it oldfashioned. “We have an outstanding deli, … we have an extensive wine selection, outstanding beer section, we have a 12-tap growler bar with happy hours on Friday but you can have a pint of beer and shop any time of the day. We’ve got a liquor store as well, and specialty groceries,” says Allison Homan, managing partner. “We’re really kind of a one-stop shop for anybody.” However, Homan considers the market’s meat department—which includes the deli—to be the cornerstone of the store. “Our meats are the best. They’re local, no antibiotics, no hormones. We cut everything here to order. We grind our ground products daily, I mean all day long every day, so everything is fresh, fresh, fresh,” she says. Lehr’s Prime Market makes everything in-house that it can—from the roast beef to the condiments. All sandwiches are created to order, which includes slicing the tomatoes and adding the mayo.
Everything is local as well. “I know which family farm we’re getting our cows from,” says Homan. In addition, the market locally sources its spices and sauces. While each sandwich has a following, Homan recommends the Carew Tower Double Decker—with ham, turkey, bacon, marinated tomatoes, cheddar and Swiss cheese, and romaine lettuce—for those with a big appetite. “It honestly could serve easily two people,” she says Two new sandwiches—the Anthony Muñoz, an Italian sandwich, and the Ben Gal, a buffalo chicken sandwich—are party sandwiches that can feed a large group. “You can do 24 really substantial sandwiches or 48 small-bite sandwiches,” says Homan. The bread is baked fresh by Sixteen Bricks, so make sure to order 48 hours in advance. In addition to sandwiches, the deli serves up prepared meals like chicken cordon bleu and specialty items like Wagyu beef. Opened in 1959, the Amelia Florist Wine & Gift Shop is the oldest flower shop in Clermont County. It’s also the voters’ choice as the Best Florist in the Best of the East competition. Vickie Wenstrup has owned the shop for nine years, but she’s been a part of the business for more than 40 years. “I actually started at that shop a week after I graduated from high school,” she says. But she didn’t spend her whole career there. She worked at Amelia Florist Wine & Gift Shop for several years after high school before moving on to work at other shops in the floral industry. And then nine years ago the previous owner, who was in her 70s, approached Wenstrup about buying the shop. “It was a good time for us,” she says. “I kind of did the whole full-circle thing and came back.” There are several reasons why Amelia Florist Wine & Gift Shop was chosen by voters as the Best Florist, says Wenstrup, including incorporating really nice design and high-quality flowers in its arrangements, she says. “And a huge emphasis on customer service,” says Wenstrup. It’s the presentation of those flowers and the way they look when they’re delivered that’s the most important, she says. Amelia Florist Wine & Gift Shop uses trendy designs and more premium flowers in its arrangements, says Wenstrup, who attends “a lot of” trade shows and design seminars to stay on top of the current trends. She takes the business of flowers seriously. “Flowers are a very emotional thing for people … especially with funeral work as far as trying to convey their feelings through flowers and we take that very seriously,” Wenstrup says. — ERIC SPANGLER

A Stroke of Art offers weekly canvas painting sessions as well as specialty classes in glass painting, painting on wood shapes and decorative painting where friends can enjoy the step-by-step instructions with experienced local artists. Keeping up with the latest art trends, Mills says the studio offers sessions in acrylic pouring and alcohol ink. “For those who want to take their newfound creative passion to the next level we offer workshops in watercolor and calligraphy,” says Mills. “All in a colorful, cozy atmosphere where our guests unwind and get creative.”

Mills, a former art teacher and published designer, says she made it her life’s passion to teach others. “I design step-by-step painting instructions for current publications and my patterns and designs are available on my website,” she says. Mills opened the doors of her studio to everyone—from the novice who never picked up a paintbrush to seasoned painters to explore new techniques to reignite their creative spark. “I continue to teach and instruct many of the classes, but along the way I have acquired other passionate, enthusiastic local artists who share my love to teach others and have walked with me on this journey of creativity,” she says. “Over the past eight years, I have been blessed to meet hundreds of local people who have become loyal patrons and who have shared their experience with their friends and families who have become loyal guests to my studio,” Mills says. — ERIC SPANGLER

BEST BIKE SHOP
Bishop’s Bicycles 313 Main St., Milford
Bishop’s Bicycles has been in business for 129 years and in Milford since 1971, fostering the customer loyalty that led to the store being voted Best Bike Shop at the 2019 Best of the East. “We strive very hard to make sure that we deliver to our customers what our expectations would be to remain the Best of the East,” says Lisa Linfert, who owns Bishop’s Bicycles with her husband, Greg. Today the shop offers bike service, from tune-ups to rebuilding wheels; bike rentals for those looking to ride the Little Miami Trail; and bicycles of all types, from cruisers to mountain bikes, for purchase. Linfert says the Jamis Citizen series is the shop’s bestseller, but the store also sells Pedego electric bikes; Felt road, mountain, fitness and electric bicycles; and Jamis road, mountain and fitness bikes, as well as an array of kids’ bikes. Bishop’s Bicycles has integrated itself into the community with a series of bike events for enthusiasts of all ages. During the warmer months, the store hosts weekly rides of the Little Miami Trail, conversation-paced rides on Tuesday that are ideal for families, and Thursday night groups for avid cyclists looking for a fast-paced ride. Linfert believes it is her staff that pushed the store over the top to win the category this year. “I believe that we actually employ the absolute greatest staff that we could have. We’re very customer-oriented. Extremely friendly. We take our time with our customers and make sure that they’re getting exactly what they need,” she says. “We make certain that everybody that rolls out our door is properly fitted to the bicycle for them, which is extremely important because if you’re not comfortable on your bike you’re not going to ride.” — CORINNE MINARD 2 0 1 9 : : E X P LO R E T H E E A S T S I D E

BEST FITNES S TRAIL
Cincinnati Nature Center – Rowe Woods 4949 Tealtown Road, Milford
The Cincinnati Nature Center’s Rowe Woods—which spans 1,016 acres, including 65 acres of old growth forest—offers more than 16 miles of trails for those looking to get on their feet and into nature. The park’s 10 trails vary in length and difficulty, meaning everyone can find the trail that matches their skill and energy level. The Mashburn Family Discovery Trail, for example, is only .72 miles long and features interactive exhibits as well as stops like the Abner Hollow Cabin, while the Far Ridge Trail covers 1.32 miles and has hikers climb to the top of a ridge. Other notable trails include the moderately challenging Geology Trail, which takes hikers past fossil-rich, Ordovician-age limestone and over four stream crossings; the moderate Wildflower Trail, which offers the best views of the center’s wildflowers and a view of the valley; and the easy-paced Whitetail Trace, which provides hikers with a waterfall view and a chance to discover wildlife near Spring Pond. — CORINNE MINARD

lermont Animal Hospital has been family owned and operated since 1980. Dr. Julia Esposito was only 4 years old when her father, Dr. David Stricker, opened the practice. “Many of my clients have known me since I was a little girl,” says Esposito. “They watched me grow up. They are my friends, my extended family.” When designing their new hospital, Stricker and Esposito wanted it to be warm and welcoming for their family of clients. They wanted every pet to feel at home. Walking through the new hospital, it quickly becomes obvious that they have achieved this goal. The perches and hammocks allow cats and exotics to rest comfortably in the exam rooms and three separate housing wards make sure that the cats aren’t frightened by dogs while the birds and bunnies have their own space. “This is my legacy to the community,” says Stricker, who sadly died in December 2018 after an eight-year fight with cancer. After 36 years of dedicated service, Stricker has left very big shoes to fill. Fortunately, Dr. Katherine Bachman
is growing into them! Bachman has been a part-time employee at Clermont Animal Hospital for the last 12 years while she has pursued an education in veterinary medicine. In July 2018, after completing her internship, she returned to the practice as an associate veterinarian.

ntertainment options abound on the East Side with parks, historic attractions, tours, sports and liveevent venues sprinkled throughout the region. Use this sampling of attractions for reasons to get out of the house.
CINCINNATI OBSERVATORY Besides being home to one of the oldest working telescopes in the country, Mount Lookout’s observatory is an East Side mainstay—it has resided in its current location since 1873—that awakens a love for stargazing in young and old alike. “The Lighthouse of the Sky” and birthplace of American astronomy is open to the public most days and conducts regular events for celestial observation and educational purposes. 3489 Observatory Place, Mount Lookout
Reeves Golf Course, Lindner Tennis Center or the vast Otto Armleder Park where the whole family can hike, picnic and enjoy the outdoors. 4740 Playfield Lane, Linwood
CONEY ISLAND An East Side attraction for over 130 years, Coney Island is best known (and loved) for its Sunlite Pool, still the largest recirculat-
ing pool in the world. Though that may be the main draw in the summertime heat, Coney Island also has rides, paddleboats and annual events like Summerfair and Balloon Glow. Right next door is Riverbend Music Center and PNC Pavilion, where some of the biggest music tours of the summer will make their stops in Cincinnati. 6201 Kellogg Ave., Anderson Township
LUNKEN PLAYFIELD For parents of young children, Lunken Playfield’s playground, Land of Make Believe, is a godsend. Full of slides, jungle gyms and much more while lined with soft, cushioned turf this place can provide hours of fun for the little ones. It’s a great destination for families looking for a scenic place to visit or picnic and for architecture and history buffs who can appreciate Anderson’s attention to detail. Open daily from April through September, Loveland Castle also hosts many family friendly events throughout the summer. 12025 Shore Drive, Loveland
CINCINNATI NATURE CENTER In a city full of incredible parks, Milford’s 1,000-acre nature center contains a wealth of outdoor experiences to enjoy. The 10 hiking and walking trails range from easy loops for seeing wildlife to more difficult climbs that take hikers through some of the more remote parts of Rowe Woods. Families will discover plenty of amenities to keep them coming back between picnic facilities, the Marge & Charles Schott Nature Playscape and year-round events for nature lovers of all ages. 4949 Tealtown Road, Milford

CINCINNATI WINE WAGON Sure, beer and bourbon may be the hottest libations in the city, but there’s plenty of wine to imbibe as well! Though not solely bound to the East Side, the Cincinnati Wine Wagon starts at Maggiano’s Little Italy at Kenwood Towne Center before touring wineries in
Silverton, Westwood, Morrow and Green Township. Enjoy samples at each stop, learn about how the juice is made and enjoy snacks to keep you going before returning to the mall or JACK Casino downtown. Tours begin at 7875 Montgomery Road, Montgomery. n

DINING EIGHTH & ENGLISH Much as its name may evoke an intersection that doesn’t exist in this city, the latest tenant of 2038 Madison Road offers a sensational combination of seafood and Mediterranean fare that isn’t too common in Cincinnati. THE BIRCH Terrace Park’s young restaurant has a welcoming entrance, wonderful indoor and outdoor seating and a delightful menu of shareable items with an emphasis on fresh and locally sourced ingredients. Though small plates comprise most of the food options, sandwiches like a veggie gyro and a croque monsieur can satisfy those looking for a little more. SCHOOLHOUSE RESTAURANT In a two-room, Civil War-era schoolhouse on Glendale-Milford Road in Camp Dennison, diners can find some of the best comfort food our city has to offer. Seven Hot East Side Shopping Spots By Kevin Michell
T
he various neighborhoods and hamlets of the East Side feature a wide array of shopping options, from large malls to cozy merchant districts. Whether you need something in a pinch or want to spend an afternoon browsing these eight places will have just what you need.
JUNGLE JIM’S EASTGATE The second massive grocery superstore from James Bonaminio provides an experience that goes well beyond picking up milk, eggs and bread. This 215,000-square-foot store just off state Route 32 and Interstate 275 features all of the hallmarks of the original Fairfield location—including the generous plethora of meats, veggies and cheeses—as well as one of Ohio’s largest liquor stores, regular wine tasting events and a pavilion serving food, drinks and live music.
MAIN STREET IN OLD MILFORD Combining the quaint charm of this historic town with a modern resurgence in boutique shopping these eight blocks pack a lot of diverse retail options together.
ROOKWOOD COMMONS & PAVILION Though less than 20 years old, this open-air shopping complex is the symbolic bridge between Norwood and Hyde Park, appropriately for a lot encircled by Edwards and Madison Roads and Interstate 71. With a little something for everyone, the 57 stores contained within offer everything from books and bargains to high-end clothing boutiques and varied dining options to enjoy before or after a shopping spree. 32
E X P LO R E T H E E A S T S I D E : : 2 0 1 9
Antique and unique décor hunters will love the variety spread between Villa Sanctuary and The Mercantile Mall, while enthusiasts can find unique stores like Roads Rivers and Trails and Coolest Toys on Earth.
HYDE PARK SQUARE A chic shopping district with many unique offerings, there’s always something interesting happening on Hyde Park Square, particularly in the warmer months. Visitors can find a wide array of trendy, eclectic clothiers, eateries, art galleries and retailers surrounding a picturesque central park. Treat yourself in between shop visits with a coffee or tea from Awakenings or a cone from Graeter’s.
Walnut Hills, where Madison crosses Woodburn, is a lively little collection of independent retailers, salons and food and drink establishments. Just a mile east is the central strip of O’Bryonville where craft, décor and apparel stores commingle with art galleries and eateries.
ANDERSON TOWNE CENTER This shopping complex on Beechmont Avenue has undergone quite a facelift
since a 2015 investment paved the way for extensive renovations and expansion. Vacant buildings on the lot were torn down to make room for a unique dinein AMC movie theater while Macy’s and one of the region’s largest Kroger stores have served as anchors for new tenants to fill in around. The open-air central area offers good variety in both shopping and dining options, as well spas, salons and a fitness center. n
EASTGATE MALL This veteran of the East Side is going into its fourth decade of existence. Chock full of mall standards—including Kohl’s, JCPenney and a Dillard’s Clearance outlet—and surrounded by stores that range from big-box retailers to discount shops, the mall serves as an important hub for the shopping needs of residents throughout Clermont and eastern Hamilton counties as well as visitors to the area.
MADISON ROAD IN O’BRYONVILLE AND EAST WALNUT HILLS Madison Road may be most known as the primary way in and out of Hyde Park and Oakley, but two neighboring shopping districts give people plenty of reasons to stop and shop. DeSales Corner in East 2 0 1 9 : : E X P LO R E T H E E A S T S I D E

Clermont Chamber turns 50 BY LIZ ENGEL
T
he Clermont Chamber of Commerce is celebrating a major birthday in 2019. The association – a group of businesses, professionals and individuals in the community – turns 50 this year, and its leaders are celebrating the occasion with several nods to the past. For three chairmen in particular, the organization played pivotal roles in their early careers – and made Clermont the place that it is today. “The Clermont Chamber was involved in almost every facet of business, education, government that you can imagine,” says Dick Mallon, a former Frisch’s vice president who chaired the chamber board in 1977. “Clermont County would not be what it is today without it.” The Clermont Chamber was organized in 1969 by a group of businessmen who wanted to establish a branch of UC in Clermont County. They quickly accomplished their goal. Following a land and money pledge in early 1970, UC Clermont College opened in 1972. But afterward, the group kind of coasted. “They didn’t have anything to do,” Alan Piker says. There were no long-term objectives. So, from 1971 until 1977, the Clermont Chamber entered into an agreement with the Cincinnati Chamber. Under Cincinnati’s
guidance, the Clermont Chamber prospered. “It was a big deal for Clermont County folks to partner with the 900-pound gorilla in Cincinnati,” Piker says. He joined the chamber in 1975 and served as board chair in 1987. “There were a lot of conversations and a lot of discussion. In the end, it was a great move because we just didn’t have the resources they had. And it was a great relationship over the years.” The organization had its hand in many worthwhile projects – it worked for the completion of Interstate 275 (formerly, it ended at the Ohio River), worked to extend State Route 32, and supported the opening of the Zimmer plant. For Mallon – who still serves on several chamber committees today – another pivotal moment involved the hiring of Ed Parish as chamber president in 1979. Parish, an engineer by profession and former executive vice president at Ingersoll Rand, spent the next 18 years at the helm. “He single-handedly brought the chamber into the modern world,” Mallon says. “The chamber was a powerhouse, and a lot of that had to do with Ed,” Piker adds. Tom Ruthemeyer, a CPA by trade who helped open Clermont Mercy Hospital, and a chamber chairman in 1981, remembers his leadership style well.
The Clermont Chamber’s board of directors meet in this undated photo.
“He was a character. He basically came from New York, and some of the members of the community were not quite used to Ed’s forcefulness; although I enjoyed it myself,” says Ruthemeyer. “It’s one of the reasons I stayed [involved]. We needed somebody who was going to be aggressive. He got the job done.” Ruthemeyer no longer lives in Clermont County, but he remembers his time there fondly. The community is seeing big change and there’s still value in the chamber today. “It’s a way to bring different businesses together. It’s almost neutral territory, and you need that if you really want to develop a community,” Ruthemeyer says. As for any formal 50th birthday celebrations, Matthew Van Sant, today’s president and CEO, says his team is planning a series of activities that will “inspire deeper engagement in the greater good of Clermont County.” Those activities will include member businesses and community partners and will be experiential in nature, including history – perhaps even a time capsule. “Most of all, there will be fellowship and storytelling to be grateful for our past and inspire what the chamber will do in the future,” Van Sant says. “Stay tuned.” n c l e r m o n t c h a m b e r. c o m

Clermont CARES
ANIMAL SHELTER IS GROUND ZERO IN AN EFFORT TO SAVE ALL STRAY DOGS
A
newly formed organization is now managing the Clermont County animal shelter. How new? The group, Clermont Animal CARE Humane Society, became official just weeks before its start date, Jan. 1, 2018. But in the 16 months since, it has helped save hundreds of dog lives. Carolyn Evans, CARE’s executive director, and a longtime animal activist, led the charge. After attending a national conference hosted by Best Friends Animal Society, an animal rescue organization, she came home with a fire to do more. The timing seemed right. Clermont County was readying to bid its contract for its animal shelter, located in Batavia, so in October, Evans and her team narrowed in on that opportunity. But there wasn’t much time. She had to submit that application by December. CARE was officially formed one month later. “I knew we needed to at least try,” she says. “Thirty years ago, about 17 million pets died in animal shelters. Best Friends [Animal Society] has really put a stake in the ground and has this vision that we can be a no-kill nation by the year 2025. That really inspired me to say we can do this here in Cincinnati.” CARE takes a no-kill approach – but it’s a little bit different than what’s been done here before. CARE does not euthanize animals for space, convenience or behavior, but it’s also not limiting its intake, or how many strays it takes in, either. Since Jan. 1, 2018, the group has maintained a 96 percent “save rate.” The benchmark in the field, Evans says, is 90 percent. Up until five years ago, Clermont County,

like many shelters nationwide, was euthanizing about 80 percent of its animals, she said. The key is pushing the concept of a “no-kill community.” The animal shelter has space for only 70 kennels, so CARE must rely on fosters outside the building. Evans says CARE currently has 150 approved fosters; she hopes to grow that number significantly. “If we were able to bring in every animal that needed our help, we could build the biggest animal shelter in the world, and it still wouldn’t be big enough,” she says. “You have to think outside the building. “The wave of the future, the vision for animal sheltering, is that shelters become smaller and smaller, so they’re really just waystations,” she adds. “I love what we do here, and we provide great care, but an animal shelter is the worst place for an animal to be. It’s never going to replace a home.” While the shelter still provides warden services and housing and animal care for stray dogs, it also offers low-cost microchipping and spay/neuters ($20). There’s enrichment opportunities. CARE received a grant and will work with the nonprofit Dogs Playing for Life, which

teaches shelters how to safely incorporate doggie playgroups. Evans says that will be a “game changer.” The training will take place this spring. It provides food assistance, or short-term fosters, programs that help people keep their pets at home, versus surrendering them. CARE even offers a daytime foster. People can take a dog out for a walk, or with them to run errands. Even getting out of the shelter for “just a couple hours,” she says, “is huge.” “It’s pretty innovative; not every shelter would do that,” Evans adds. CARE is now in the second year of a three-year contract. Now that things are a little more settled, Evans hopes to build up her support network. That’s the only way to continue on an upward trajectory. “It’s been like drinking from a fire hose from day one. We’re still understaffed, we’re still underfunded. But we’re still saving a lot of animals,” Evans says. n

COUNTY OPENS INDUSTRIAL PARK; LANDS FIRST TENANT WITH MORE TO COME
I
f you build it they will come. It’s more than just a popular movie quote, arguably the most memorable line uttered by Kevin Costner in the 1989 flick Field of Dreams. It’s also the mantra surrounding Williamsburg Township’s South Afton Industrial Park. Ne w l y de velope d, a nd C ler mont County’s largest industrial park, its 242 acres along Half Acre Road are prime for development. And now that it’s landed its first tenant – Design Within Reach, a furniture and home accessories company, which is scheduled to move into a new 617,760 square feet, $17 million distribution facility in May – officials are hoping things really take off from there. “That’s the hope,” says Allison Murcia, a development specialist with the Clermont County Department of Community & Economic Development, which manages the activities and sale of land at South Afton. “It’s one thing for me to say, ‘the site’s done, and we’re good to go.’ It’s another for [prospects] to go out there and see someone building.” ECD officials expect a 10-year build out at South Afton. The site could ultimately net 1,855 permanent jobs, with an additional 1,675 in related jobs (suppliers and services) for an annual payroll of $186 million; an estimated $94 million of new property value, and $32 million in new property taxes.
Many of the jobs will go to Clermont County residents, Murcia says, a majority of whom – approximately 60 percent – now commute outside the county for work. “That’s a crazy, big number to us. That’s insane, that 60 percent of people [living] here drive to Hamilton, Butler or Warren counties,” she says. “This provides an opportunity to shorten their commute. And we definitely have the available workforce. We hear a lot that our proximity even to Adams and Brown counties is a draw as well.” Dan Colletto, vice president of leasing and development for Duke Realty in Cincinnati, said Design Within Reach started exploring expansion options in 2017. Duke Realty will own and manage the property at South Afton. Design Within Reach already leases two properties from Duke Realty in Northern Kentucky. Design Within Reach needed access to several major highlights, he says. South Afton provides better access to I-77 and to the New York City market, where the company has a large client base. South Afton’s “proximity to I-275, strong local labor pool and infrastructure” made it a preferred site, says Colletto. But speed to market was key. South Afton is Southwest Ohio’s only SiteOhio Authenticated Site, meaning it’s been

verified as shovel ready for development. All the necessary infrastructure is there. “The availability of developable land is increasingly scarce in the traditional Northern Kentucky and north Cincinnati submarkets. The ability to purchase the land and develop the building in a very short time frame was the differentiator,” Colletto says. Colletto says the new building has been customized – its clear height, loading characteristics, office design and racking configuration are all designed for Design Within Reach – and there’s also options for future growth. Design Within Reach will have the ability to add solar panels to the roof structure to offset future power needs; to expand trailer and auto parking to meet future parking needs; and a built-in expansion of the building will easily allow for more interior space, if needed. Meanwhile, Murcia says ECD is still actively marketing the site. Ideal tenants include production and manufacturing businesses. “We’re chugging away,” she says. n c l e r m o n t c h a m b e r. c o m

lermont is set to officially join the big leagues. When the FC Cincinnati Mercy Health Training Center in Milford becomes fully operational later this year, the county will be one of only four in Ohio boasting a professional training facility. FC Cincinnati, the Queen City’s new Major League Soccer team, is building the $30 million facility, which will also host soccer-related events like tournaments and scrimmages. Clermont County commissioners approved a 1-percent lodging-tax
increase to help fund the center, which will include a 30,000-square-foot building for the MLS team, additional buildings for FCC Academy developmental teams, three full-size lighted soccer fields and a goalkeeper training area – all on 24 acres. It’s a big boon for local officials here. “We took a very aggressive approach to secure the facility,” says Michael Doss, Milford city manager. “We felt we had an ideal location, with high visibility off I-275, in an up-and-coming market.”
A rendering shows the new Mercy Health Training Center in Milford.
Another element in Milford’s favor, he says, was the youth-soccer factor. “Youth teams and event attendees will come from cities like Chicago and Kansas City – they’ll need places to eat and stay, too,” Doss says. And the Training Center will aid in other ways. “MLS teams and players will be traveling here from major cities, just like with the Reds and Bengals, as will national media,” Doss says. “We’ll gain international exposure since soccer is a global sport. “And it demonstrates on a major scale an investment in Milford,” he continues. “It may serve to draw another investor – ‘I like what’s going on in Milford’ – a kind of ripple effect could occur. We expect big things.” FC broke ground on the training center last fall. The main building is on target for an August opening, reports Lizz Summers, FC Cincinnati’s VP of communications. “Until then, the team is working out of custom-built, temporary facilities on site,” she says. n

new medical center on Cincinnati’s east side will be a one-stop for women’s health and cancer care – marking another major health care investment for one of the region’s fastest growing counties. Mercy Health-Eastgate Medical Center, an $18.7 million, three-story, 75,000-squarefoot pavilion located in Clermont County’s Ivy Point, will offer a gamut of services, from medical oncology, radiation oncology and clinical trials to family medicine, pharmacy and eye care. Officials expect it to be fully operational by the third quarter 2019. Mercy is partnering with OHC Inc., a cancer care specialty group, and Cincinnati Eye Institute. CEI will be first to move in; it could start surgeries in July, says Ken James, east market leader for Mercy Health-Cincinnati.
BY LIZ ENGEL Mercy Health is adding a new medical center in Ivy Point.
Mercy and OHC should be settled by June. “This is a prime location,” James says. “If you think about our market triangularly, from Anderson to Milford, down to Georgetown and up to Eastgate, it’s the best position to provide access for our patients.” For Mercy, it’s one of several recent projects in Clermont County. It opened a HealthPlex and family medicine practice at West Clermont High School in 2017. In December, it opened a new 18-bed geri-psych unit at Clermont Hospital. And Mercy has partnered with FC Cincinnati, which is building a $30 million soccer training complex in Milford. James says Mercy plans to build an orthopedic center adjacent to the club’s practice field. “Clermont is growing. Data shows that there’s two pockets of growth in metro
Cincinnati – and Clermont County is one of those anticipated areas,” James says. Mercy Health-Eastgate Medical Center will be Mercy’s first facility in Cincinnati to offer a “multi-disciplinary approach to healing” under one roof. James says that makes it a differentiator. “It’s a holistic approach to healing: mind, body and spirit,” he says. “We’ll have dieticians, rehab, PT, OT, nutritional services and spiritual care for patients as they present for cancer treatment. We’ve had the approach before, but it’s been, ‘Go here Monday, go there on Tuesday, and we’ll see you here Wednesday,’ whereas this is a one-stop shop for service.” Officials expect to formerly mark the facility’s opening with a ribbon cutting in May. n

Preventing ‘Brain Drain’ YOUNG PROFESSIONALS OF CLERMONT EMBRACE REGIONALISM BY JESSICA BALTZERSEN

ver 10 years ago in 2008, Jenny Matthews graduated from LEAD Clermont – a program that works on integrating projects to benefit the leadership and community of Clermont County. As part of her acceptance into the program, she suggested starting a group for young professionals in the county. In 2017, that organization, Young Professionals of Clermont, officially joined under the Clermont Chamber of Commerce. And today, Matthews is the vice president of employment benefit solutions at Marsh & McLennan Agency, the company that sponsors the group. “The goal was for young professionals to develop connections, to engage and learn about the city and a way to tie them closer to their community,” Matthews says. Ultimately, the YP group helps embrace regionalism and fight against economic “brain drain.” A term in this case referring to the outward migration of educated young people into bigger, more cosmopolitan cities after college. The initiative behind YP Clermont is to not only keep the younger generation of professionals engaged where they grew up, but to make sure companies and employers in the region are aware of workplace trends to incentivize young people to stay. “If our young professionals simply view CL8

The good that LEAD can do
BY LIZ ENGEL
I
t’s a Thursday, after hours, and a handful of Clermont County high school students are still at school. Their sole task: to tag each locker with a Post-it note. It may seem like tedious work. But each square contains an aspiring quote, an uplifting word; it’s part of a kindness campaign the students, members of a leadership program led by LEAD Clermont Academy, brainstormed themselves. And come Friday morning, when their fellow students walk in on the surprise, the effort will be well worth it. For Bob Pautke, LEAD president and executive director, it’s just another example. LEAD Clermont Academy has spurred many similar good deeds throughout the community. Over its nearly 30-year history, LEAD has continued to evolve. Today, it targets everyone from the high schoolers above (LEAD Ready) to seniors (LEAD Encore) with programs like LEAD Classic, its flagship, an 11-month program for community leaders; and LEAD Emerge, a program for young professionals, specifically 20-30 year olds, in between. While Encore is LEAD’s newest addition – it’s geared for those in the third act of their careers, or “boomers or retirees,” Pautke says, “who want to be more involved in the community” – all programs are experiencing growth. But the “Promise,” a pledge that each participant makes to give back to the community in which they “live, work and play,” remains key. “That was a major shift a couple years ago,” Pautke says. “Success isn’t just completing the classes. Success is completing the classes and then doing something with it – giving back to your school, giving back to your organization, giving back to our community.” LEAD has spurred spinoffs like Agenda
for the Future, a community-wide visioning campaign, and Stop The Abuse Before It Ever Starts, a nonprofit that teaches coping skills to Clermont County high school students as a means to prevent unintentional child abuse, like Shaken Baby Syndrome. KLiCWOW, founded in 2016 by John Melvin, a member of the LEAD Classic class of 1992, wants to put a tablet in the hands of every 3 and 4 year old in Clermont County. As part of the effort, the organization recommends certain learning apps – the idea is to boast early literacy skills, to better prepare kids for kindergarten, and beyond. From LEAD Ready, high school students have started ambassador programs to help new students learn the ropes. There’s been kindness campaigns, like with the Postit notes. It created a lot of positive buzz, Pautke says, a mission accomplished. “People were talking about the good thing that happened, rather than rumors or the bad,” he adds. “It had an impact.” And then there’s the efforts that can’t be quantified – like the LEAD graduates
TOP: LEAD Ready students from Grant Career Center build a marshmallow tower out of spaghetti, string and tape – a demonstration that teaches teamwork, the impact of assumptions and critical thinking. BOTTOM: LEAD Ready students from Milford High School participate in a “Grateful Leader” class day. Students exchanged “Encourage the Heart Valentines,” which highlight something they appreciate in each of their classmates.
– there’s over 600 from LEAD Classic, alone – who are now serving on nonprofit boards and the like. Officials estimate that 70 percent of all public and private boards in the county are filled by LEAD alumni. Pautke thinks that number may be higher. “How do you measure the impact of [that] work?” he asks. “How do you tell that composite story – of 500-600 people who are out doing good work in the community where we live, work and play? It’s hard to put that in two or three sentences. All we know is that it’s significant. And without this, the community would not be as good or as vibrant.” n c l e r m o n t c h a m b e r. c o m
