Now in his eighth year as team physician of the Cincinnati Bengals, Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Marc Galloway knows how to deal with athletes of the highest caliber.

“It just comes down to being a doctor and not a fan,” Galloway says. “My goal isn’t to worry so much about the winning and losing, my goal is to provide the highest level of medical care.”

Obviously Bengals players want to get back out there, however Galloway’s tenure and relationship allows players to know he has their long-term interests at heart.

“My job is to determine when an injury is something that someone can tolerate without placing them in jeopardy for long-term consequences versus something that is more serious,” he says. “I think that patients are impressed by your empathy towards them as well as your knowledge and your approach to them.”

That approach doesn’t change no matter the patient. Also the team physician for several area high schools and a practicing doctor at Mercy Health’s Cincinnati Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center, Galloway approaches amateur athletes with the same practices and care for their long-term future.

And watching players return to the field is the most rewarding part of the job.

“I’m not doing life-saving surgery, my goal is to let kids enjoy what should be some of the most physically active years of their lives,” he says.

“That’s what I enjoy.”

St. Elizabeth’s Executive Medical Director of Oncology Services Dr. Douglas Flora is a busy man. In addition to being a practicing doctor, Flora is overseeing the construction of the new Cancer Center in Edgewood, which recently broke ground.

Flora’s excitement for the new facility is palpable, noting that the six-story, 250,000-square-foot facility will be the most technologically advanced in the region. “(The Center) is designed to bring the most cuttingedge clinical trials and access to research. This is going to be a game changing place for patient care in our area,” Flora says.

The facility will utilize the technology of genomic health, allowing doctors to more carefully select cancer drugs and provide more advanced screenings for cancer.

“Rather than just saying you’re 50, you need a colonoscopy, a simple swab of a patient’s cheek can tell what cancers they maybe at risk for and build a personal plan,” Flora says. “We’re hoping that with better information and better technology and screening modalities that we can find these cancers when they’re stage zero or stage one and curable.”

The benefits will extend beyond the cancer field with the utilization of Pharmacogenomics, which is the study of how genes affect a person’s response to drugs.

“We’re now going to be able to identify patients who have risks for side effects for drugs,” he says.

A Northern Kentucky native, Dr. Charles Gabis decided to stay home to practice medicine as a family doctor in Ft. Mitchell, treating patients from nine years old to 98.

“The variety I see from day to day is one of my favorite parts of being a family physician,” Gabis says.

Working in the Christ Hospital Health Network, Gabis practices preventative medicine, which is the science of stopping health problems before they start.

Aspects of treatment include vaccines, contraception and health screenings, but also working with patients to decrease the chances of contracting an illness they are at risk of—such as diabetes—by implementing lifestyle changes to their exercise and diet.

“The secret to good preventative medicine is engaging the patient in their own healthcare,” Gabis says.

“For many of us, the things that we eat and drink, our level of physical activity, and how we look after our emotional wellness can be the difference between having an empty wallet and a full medicine cabinet or the other way around.”

Preventative medicine becomes even more important with the rising costs of health care. By getting patients to live a healthy lifestyle many future health problems can be avoided.

“The most important advancements on the horizon for Family Medicine and preventative care will be in how we deliver care and how we can improve access to health care for everyone,” Gabis says.

Dr. Rohmiller’s specialties include pediatric spine surgery and scoliosis, adult scoliosis surgery, and minimally invasive surgery of the spine. A native of the area, he is the only board certified, fellowship-trained spine surgeon with a practice in Northern Kentucky.

Raised in Ft. Thomas, KY, Dr. Sower returned to his home town after completing his residency at the University of Kentucky Medical School.
