INSIDE NKY

Covington Alight The second edition of Blink crosses the river, incorporating Covington into the October light and art festival. BY KE VIN MICHELL

W

hen the first iteration of Blink had come and gone in late 2017, the Greater Cincinnati area remained aglow with pride and wonderment for weeks after. But for as great of a showcase the festival was to visitors from all over, it wasn’t a complete display of the area surrounding downtown. Blink’s return—October 10 through 13— has rectified that by spanning the Roebling Bridge into Covington, where several blocks on Madison Avenue will be alight with art, projection mapping and light installations. “The projections and installations along Madison in Covington—it is so dense with art and light I think that this is a chance for hundreds of thousands of people to rediscover how incredible Covington is,” says Brendon Cull, senior vice president and chief operating officer of the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber. The chamber is partnered

with Agar, ArtWorks, Brave Berlin and The Carol Ann and Ralph V. Haile Jr. Foundation to handle the production of Blink 2019. While the path from the riverfront to the resurgent area of Madison around Hotel Covington and Braxton Brewing will be the main focal point of Blink’s presence on the south bank, there will plenty of other happenings showcasing Covington to attendees. Saturday night will feature a free concert performed by international pop act Grouplove in the RiverCenter parking lot, made possible by Corporex. There, visitors will also find a brand-new mural created by Xylene and animated by light projection from Brave Berlin. In addition, two major landmarks will be artistically lit up for the weekend. The Ascent building will be illuminated with animation and light, providing a beacon that will draw people to the Covington portion of Blink. Meanwhile, the Roebling Bridge itself will become an art fixture of light and sound making the landmark and the river below it shine and sing. Through collaboration with many partner organizations, including Erlanger’s Vincent Lighting and the Milburn Foundation, the bridge will be animated by a Brave Berlin light projection and stand as a symbol of how Greater Cincinnati’s growth isn’t just

The Carnegie was lit up for Blink in 2017 and will be joined during this year’s edition by many other Covington landmarks.

limited to downtown and Over-the-Rhine. “People who live in Covington are really proud of it,” says Cull of the new businesses and attractions in the Northern Kentucky city, “as they should be because there’s just so much going on.” Of course, Blink will have a dizzying array of light shows, art and interactive fixtures on the Ohio side of the river as well. Attendees can hop across the bridge on a free Oggo cab to Smale Park and participate in a light battle powered by stationary bikes, check out Dodecalis—the new Architects of Air installation—at Washington Park and stroll around the city or take the streetcar to see all the lights and sounds that Blink has in store. But for now, Covington prepares for its moment in the spotlight during Blink 2019 and its residents are excited to show over a million people what makes their home a unique and special part of Greater Cincinnati. “We’re grateful,” Cull says. “Everybody in Northern Kentucky has embraced this.” n

NKY Q&A

4 Questions with Florence Freedom CEO David DelBello BY KE VIN MICHELL

W

hen Clint Brown passed away in January 2018, it left a hole in the Florence community and left his wife, Kim, to run the Florence Freedom baseball club on her own. Brown recently sold the Freedom to a group of Cincinnati businessmen that included David DelBello, who will step into the role of team CEO. Only a couple months into the position, DelBello spoke with us about looking ahead to the 2020 season.

Q

How were you introduced to Kim Brown and the opportunity to buy the Florence Freedom?

A

One of my partners had been in contact with her and it was right place, right time as most things might happen. But, more importantly, Kim chose us over groups. We feel comfortable with her and she with us, but she also realized we had the same values in terms of what the team does and what the team does for the community and wanting to keep the team here. I know she had some opportunities to sell it to some out-of-town people but there were no guarantees of the team staying here.

Q

Is there anything you want to do as CEO to continue the connection the Freedom has with the community?

A

Honestly, there are lots of ideas and lots of thoughts on what we want to do. We’re still deciding what is the best ap-

proach, what’s the best path. I will tell you that some things will be different—engagement with the community will be different and there will be some new and exciting things going on come next year so that people will want to come to the ballpark again.

Q

Is there something unique about the experience of independent baseball at a Florence Freedom game?

A

What brings people to the ballpark is a family-friendly, fun, affordable atmosphere. Our main customer is a family—two or three children—and they come to the ballpark because it’s a lot more affordable than going across the river. Parking’s free, tickets are relatively inexpensive. But probably more importantly, when they get here it’s a family environment where kids can run around and play—we have a kid’s zone [and] parents feel safe to let their kids play. The kids enjoy it not only for the play aspect of it but because of the show that goes on around the game as well. What happens in between the innings is just as important

as what happens during the innings here.

Q

With an unaffiliated minor league team, what does a successful season entail?

A

At first blush, success on the field means giving these guys opportunities to continue playing pro ball and hopefully getting an opportunity then to be signed into affiliate ball. The fact that we’ve had five of them signed to affiliated contracts [this season] is a big success; that’s more than anybody else in the [Frontier] League. That means we’re doing something right on the field. Success on the other side of it is certainly people coming to the ballpark—numbers are important but also people walking out of the ballpark saying they had a good time. They want to come back, they want to tell their friends to come back—that’s success. If we continue to do that and if we get better at that, even though it’s doing well now, the team from a business perspective will be just fine. n www.BestofNKY.com

NKY NKY SPOTLIGHT COMMENT

BY RICK ROBINSON

Rules My Parents Taught Me… …or else I’d wind up in a ditch somewhere

G

rowing up in the Greater LudlowBromley Metropolitan Area, my parents had lots of rules. Breaking those rules always seemed to coincide with me “winding up in a ditch somewhere.” My mother, in particular, was obsessed with ditches. The ditch was where chronic rule breakers always ended up. “Don’t do this, or you’ll end up in a ditch somewhere,” she’d say, which conveyed the seriousness of the rule. As a child, I perceived ditches as if they were somehow Satan’s personal portal to hell. As an adult, I drove all around Ludlow and Bromley only to discover we, in fact, had very few ditches. The many hours I’ve spent with my shrink exploring my “ditchaphobia” (fear of ditches), led me to realize that many of my parent’s rules are no longer applicable. DON’T TALK TO STRANGERS. Historically, the fastest way to ending up in a ditch was doing anything beyond making simple eye contact with someone you did not know. Thinking back on it, even eye contact was fast-tracking some unknown roadside trench. Every unidentified person walking the streets of Ludlow and Bromley had “danger” tattooed across their forehead. This ignored the fact that many people we actually knew deserved the same forehead ink. Today our entire life experience is a hashtag away from being conveyed to the world on social media. Strangers view our lives from the screen of some portable electronic device. I suspect the people my parents feared would send me to my eternal ditch are probably now following me on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. For their benefit, I post pictures of me on vacation, so they’ll

12

NKY MAGAZINE WINTER 2019

know when to rob my house. DON’T HITCHHIKE. To my mom, every driver picking up a hitchhiker was a potential Ted Bundy in a VW Bug. Come to think of it, I once hitched a ride with someone driving a VW Bug, but I married the driver. Aside from a few outbursts during menopause, she has not displayed any psychotic tendencies. But I digress. This rule no longer applies because Uber and Lyft have made hitchhiking a respectable and growing business in America. Traded on the NYSE and the NASDAQ, both companies have flowery mission statements aimed at luring investors to purchase its stock. Personally, I’d be more apt to buy if they had an honest statement, something like, “We pick up hitchhikers for a fee and 99.9% of the time take them to their requested destination. Very few end up in ditches.” LOOK BOTH WAYS BEFORE CROSSING THE STREET. Apparently, many less enlightened folks do not realize that peering at a cell phone while crossing the street places a cosmic protective shield around the body, alleviating the need for paying attention to oncoming traffic (witnessed by me on a daily basis as I constantly slam on my brakes to avoid hitting these cosmically shielded people stepping off the curb while looking at their cell phones). RESPECT YOUR ELDERS. This rule seemed to be the cornerstone of all parental pronouncements—everyone at least two decades older than me was to be respected. Even the crazy cat lady that lived two doors away, who sat on her front porch telling all pedestrians crossing her sidewalk how rock ‘n’ roll was leading to the degradation of western civilization, deserved respect. As someone who has officially reached

elder status, I can assure you that this rule is out the window. Young people today have no problem telling me (and everyone else my age) how we’ve screwed everything up for their generation. To them I say, “Shut the hell up and like my cat pictures on Facebook.” DON’T LET ME CATCH YOU AT THE BOAT DOCK. When I was a kid, the Ludlow Bromley Yacht Club was known to locals as simply “the Boat Dock.” On any given weekend, my mom and dad would drag me to the Ludlow Vets, where we’d enjoy the evening from the back deck overlooking the Ohio River. As we would be enjoying our family outing at the Vets, the sound of the Boat Dock’s jukebox would come rolling up the riverbank. The combination of music and crowd noise would cause a great deal of consternation to the folks trying to enjoy drinks on the deck. This led to my dad’s Golden Rule: “If you ever get caught at the Boat Dock, don’t come home.” No ditches—just don’t come home. Of course, as soon as I was old enough (or had my first fake ID—I forget which), I headed to the Boat Dock. Luckily, Dad never found out. Obviously, that rule doesn’t apply anymore because everybody (and their parents) hang out at the Ludlow Bromley Yacht Club. By the way, please post this column to Facebook and Twitter with the hashtag #NKYDITCHES. If you don’t, you might end up in a ditch somewhere. n

Fine Drinks and Brilliant Art

Summer’s end brings new things to see and do in Northern Kentucky, plus remembering a local great.

T

he summer is just a blurry memory— rain, rain, rain and searing heat. I think we were robbed and now school is back in session. The most common lament on the street is “Where did the time go?” The next few months feature Northern Kentucky ramping up for the Kentucky’s Edge Conference and Festival throughout Covington and Newport on October 4-5, the big Blink show that will include Covington this year on October 10-13 and a statewide Kentucky Proud Beer Festival on October 19 (at the Wooden Cask Brewery in Newport). What a heady start to fall. A few details:

KENTUCKY’S EDGE This bourbon conference and festival will celebrate the state’s heritage at venues throughout Covington and Newport. There’ll be free music on the river, a Kentucky artisan market in MainStrasse Village, plenty of bourbon pairings and tastings and musical performances at area restaurants. And a major conference featuring, for one, Bill Samuels Jr. of Maker’s Mark. This salute to the state’s bourbon heritage and culture is a major step for meetNKY’s B-Line, which

grows and grows—and makes the point that Kentucky’s bourbon experience starts here.

BLINK Thanks to funding from Corporex, Blink will bring about 20 light and art installations to Covington, from the Roebling Bridge to Seventh and Madison. One will be a permanent animated mural on the north side of the TANK garage. There’ll be a free concert by Grouplove on October 12 at the RiverCenter parking lot and plenty of art, light, music and food. The Roebling Bridge will be bathed in light and sound and the world’s largest mobile disco ball will find a temporary home in NKY.

Kentucky’s Edge and Blink events. C-Forward founder Brent Cooper and President Brian Ruschman wanted to express pride in the community and demonstrate all that makes it so special.

KENTUCKY PROUD BEER FESTIVAL Paying homage to the growing craft brewing industry in Kentucky, the Department of Agriculture and the Kentucky Guild of Brewers are bringing their statewide festival to Newport’s Wooden Cask Brewery on October 19, from noon to 6 p.m. Craft breweries will serve their Kentucky Proud beers and Kentucky-sourced foods will be featured during this family-friendly festival. To get ready for all this excitement, Northern Kentucky is rolling out the barrels— custom-painted barrels that are showing up throughout the entertainment districts in Covington, Newport, Bellevue and Ludlow. Some 100 barrels were sold and sponsored to serve as both wayfinding and public art.

A PAINTED TRIBUTE TO THE REGION C-Forward is getting into the swing of it with a mural on the back of their building at Fifth and Madison that features more than 25 unique Northern Kentucky-themed references, tributes and landmarks. C-Forward partnered with Covingtonbased BLDG to design and paint the mural. It includes the Roebling Bridge, bourbon barrels, the Carroll Chimes Bell Tower and a few famous locals like Braxton Brewery and Hotel Covington. The mural was created as part of CForward’s 20th Anniversary and is a tribute to the Northern Kentucky region. It will also be on display during the upcoming

A TRIBUTE TO MIKE FARRELL Mike Farrell, lifelong Northern Kentuckian who lived in the Latonia neighborhood where he grew up, died after a long illness on August 28. He was 70 and is survived by his wife, Marsha, their two sons, David and Jonathan, and eight young grandchildren. He will be remembered as a distinguished journalist, a dedicated champion of the First Amendment and a great teacher and mentor of future journalists. Farrell was the longtime managing editor of The Kentucky Post, got his Ph.D. at the University of Kentucky when The Post closed and became a tenured professor there, recognized nationally as a great advisor to students. He was the director of the Scripps Howard First Amendment Center and was on medical leave as interim director of UK’s School of Journalism and Media when he died. A memorial scholarship fund in his name has been established at the Horizon Community Fund so that journalism and communication students at NKU and UK will continue to benefit from his nurturing guidance. NKY HI STORY

BY DAVID E . SCHROEDER, E XECUTIVE DIREC TOR OF THE KENTON COUNT Y PUBLIC LIBR ARY

Ludlow Is Making a Comeback T

here is something about growing up and living in a city where four generations of your family have resided. Each house and business sparks a memory or a story told by the older generations. The familiarity of place is both comforting and uplifting. Anyone who knows me understands that I am unabashedly a Ludlow, Kentucky booster—it is in my DNA. I grew up hearing my father, Ed Schroeder, talking about the city. Dad lived for 85 years in Ludlow and served as mayor for nearly a dozen years, and to some residents we are considered newcomers. Like many Northern Kentucky cities, Ludlow has had its ups and downs. I have witnessed both. Lately, I have been aston-

ished with the town’s reinvigoration. This trend began a little over two decades ago and has been building steam ever since. In the year 2000, a group of enthusiastic residents decided to run for city council—all six won. Their energy was contagious and that continues with their successors. With hard work and help from county and state officials, Southbank Partners and the Catalytic Fund of Northern Kentucky, their efforts have been rewarded. Ludlow is making a comeback. What I appreciate most about Ludlow’s recent success is that it is built on the city’s

Elmwood Hall as it currently stands

history. Ludlow was originally established as a rural estate by Thomas D. Carneal who built Elmwood Hall between 1818 and 1820, surrounded by a thousand-acre tract of land. William Bullock, an English gentleman who owned the Egyptian Museum in London’s Piccadilly Circus, purchased the Hall and adjacent property in 1828. His plan was to build a model city called Hygeia. Bullock’s

plans never materialized, and he sold the estate to the Israel Ludlow Jr. family in 1830. It was the Ludlow family who eventually developed the town that bears their name. Elmwood Hall still stands today on Forest Avenue. In September of this year, a Kentucky Historic Marker was dedicated in front of the stunningly well-preserved home. Elmwood Hall was followed by a number of other pre-Civil War homes including Somerset Hall, built around 1847 by the Kenner family. The beautiful structure still stands on Somerset Street. The Bentley House, now Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, was built around 1850. The Ritchie family, immigrants from Switzerland, built their stately home around 1860 at the corner of Elm and Locust streets (the house has since been demolished). Around these early beautiful residences, the first city plat was developed in 1846 with incorporation occurring in 1864. Radical change came in the 1870s with the arrival of the Cincinnati Southern Railroad. Many residences, churches, schools and businesses followed. The sleepy, well-to-do rural suburb quickly began filling with fine storefronts and homes in various architectural styles of the period. A street railroad connection to Covington and Cincinnati was built in 1894 and Ludlow’s golden age was in full swing. Ludlow’s population increased from 817 in 1870 to 2,469 in 1890. Many of these newcomers were immigrants and, in 1870, half of the adult citizens were foreign-born. As the Ludlow Reporter recorded in 1875, “Our town is fast filling up with the sons of toil, representing the various nationalities of the earth. First are those ‘natives’ and the manor born from the Scotia’s Isles … from merry England,

from Erin’s Isle, from the vine covered hills of France, from sunny Italy, and from chivalrous Germany. And with all of this, we have yet some 2,000 lots unoccupied.” Ludlow continued to develop throughout the 1920s. Many new bungalows and four-square homes were built west of Adela Street. Like many older cities, suburban development following World War II had a negative impact on Ludlow. Residents began moving to larger homes in the newer cities to the south. Ludlow’s population began to decline in the 1960s. In 2001, Fischer Homes announced the construction of the River’s Breeze community on Pigeon Point. This hilltop condominium complex offered sweeping views of downtown Cincinnati and the Ohio River valley. It was also a physical reminder that Ludlow was on the rise. In 2009, the old Ludlow Theater and adjacent building on Elm Street were purchased by Paul and Renee Miller. Over time, these two structures have been transformed into a circus performing arts venue and craft brewery. Many of the beers are named after former Ludlow residents and performers at the old Ludlow Lagoon Amusement Park, which closed over 100 years ago (we Ludlowites have long memories). This summer, the old marquee was reconstructed and placed on the 1946 Art Deco theater’s façade. In August of this year, the marquee was lit for the first time and all seemed right again on Elm Street! Other businesses followed, including Second Sights Spirits, founded by former Cirque Du Soleil designers Rick Couch and Carus Waggoner in Ludlow’s old Kroger Grocery at Elm and Kenner Streets; Folk School Coffee Parlor; the Ludlow Tavern,

offering a large selection of drinks and great food; the Jeff & John Winkle Gallery; Riverside Marketplace, a full service grocery; My Mother’s Daughter, which provides custom-made and refinished furniture and home decorations; Leeta Ruth Boutique, a women’s apparel shop; and Buck’s BBQ, which many in town fondly remember as the old Dairy Cheer. These businesses and others have brought a new vitality to the city. Their efforts to spruce up their buildings has resulted in a ripple effect with many homeowners following suit. Many long-standing businesses in Ludlow have been part of the community’s fabric for decades. Some of these include the Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home located in the antebellum Bentley House on Elm Street; Tom Gaither’s Art Studio in the old masonic hall; Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home; Hater’s, one of the few remaining dry goods stores in the region; Ideal Supply and Reeves Fruit Market, both of which have been in business for more than a century; and, of course, the Buffalo Bar and the Ludlow Bromley Yacht Club. Ludlow has maintained a wonderful public school system that boasts the lowest tax rates of any independent school district in Northern Kentucky. The school consistently rates high in academics and compares favorably to the nearby suburban districts. It is known for its close-knit community spirit and caring faculty and staff. Building on its past, Ludlow is looking toward the future with optimism and new energy. An ‘Upscale Casual’ Approach Rich’s Proper Food and Drink elevates its cuisine with a new menu BY ERIC SPANGLER

R

ich’s Proper Food and Drink in Covington has hired a new chef and is launching a new menu for the fall. Bill Whitlow, who owns Rich’s Proper Food and Drink along with his wife, Morgan, says new chef Kayla Curlin is elevating the restaurant’s cuisine from casual to “upscale casual.” The new menu—continuing the restaurant’s tradition of seafood with a hint of southern Creole influence—will offer items such as braised short ribs on roasted garlic and Parmesan grits with gravy and fried celery leaf. In addition, the new menu will have a fish and chips option featuring a breaded, deep-fried bluegill with garlic butter and herbs served with house-seasoned fries. Most restaurants use cod for their fish and chips, but Whitlow says, “We wanted to go into a more interesting fish.” Catfish, a traditional fish used in southern cuisine, will also be on the new menu. Rich’s Proper Food and Drink will now serve a blackened catfish with garlic herb butter, says Whitlow. A new appetizer on the menu will feature mussels and shrimp with roasted corn and caramelized onions in a spicy tomato red wine broth, he says. The new menu reflects Curlin’s fresh approach to the food at Rich’s Proper. “She’s taking it a notch up and just bringing a brighter and more refreshing option,” says Whitlow. The new menu doesn’t mean that the cur-

rently popular options available on today’s menu are going by the wayside. Popular items that will continue to be served include the mac and cheese eggrolls and Philly cheesesteak eggrolls; the Baton Rouge burger topped with country ham, cheese and dijonnaise; housemade beignets with Kentucky butter cream and powdered sugar; and the cordon bleu sliders with fried chicken topped with country ham, Swiss cheese and a honey-garlic aioli on brioche buns—the restaurant’s most popular item. And, of course, fresh oysters will still be emphasized, says Whitlow. Rich’s Proper has Oyster Night on Wednesdays that includes Chesapeake oysters and $5 Champagne and $5 oyster shooters, he says. “We do a nice rotating selection of nice raw oysters that we bring in multiple times a week from anywhere from New Zealand to the West Coast to Canada,” he says. “We’re one of the few places in the area that do oysters like we do,” says Whitlow. There are also award-winning cocktails to

enjoy at Rich’s Proper. “I won best bourbon cocktail in Kentucky in 2013 and 2016 and we just won best mint julep in Kentucky this year,” Whitlow says. The restaurant was also recently named one of the top bourbon bars in America by Bourbon Review Magazine, he says. The food and drinks at Rich’s Proper can best be enjoyed on the large outdoor patio on the side of the building, says Whitlow. “You can check out Hotel Covington and all the action that’s going on around you, but you’re sitting in a secluded … beautiful patio area.” Rich’s Proper Food and Drink is located at 701 Madison Ave. in Covington. n

Brewing Unique Experiences Braxton Brewing Co. to open its newest location this fall in Fort Mitchell BY ERIC SPANGLER

B

raxton Brewing Co. will soon open its newest facility to enjoy a cold beer. The Braxton Barrel House is set to open this fall in a corner of the former Remke grocery store on Dixie Highway in Fort Mitchell. The new facility, Braxton’s third location, will celebrate craft bourbon barrel beer with a barrel-aging brewery and taproom, says Mitch Barnhill, head of marketing. The taproom will include as many as 20 draft beers, along with an outdoor patio, he says. In addition, a 20,000-square-foot storage facility will be located below the taproom to house bourbon and other types of barrels for aging beer. “It’s going to be a really nice addition to Fort Mitchell, something that is … very different from our other locations,” says Barnhill. “We want to keep providing those unique experiences.” Providing guests with a one-of-a-kind experience has been the goal of Braxton Brewing Co. since it first opened its original brewery and taproom in Covington in 2015. One of a kind is a great way to describe the impetus behind the brand—Evan Rouse. Rouse fell in love with brewing beer as a kid and he built a home brewery in the family garage on Braxton Drive in Union, Kentucky, when he was just 16 years old, says Barnhill. “It started in the garage, it’s where the family would gather and it’s where

the brewery really started,” he says. Now the entire Rouse family is involved in the business and the company has continued to grow since its humble beginnings. Following the opening of the brewery and taproom in Covington, Braxton Brewing Co. opened the Braxton Labs brewery and taproom inside the Party Source store in Bellevue in 2017. It’s here that Braxton experiments with different styles, flavors and ingredients in beer, says Barnhill. “Like, right now, we have a raspberry white stout on, which doesn’t look like a stout at all but tastes like one,” he says. “We’re here to try all sorts of different things.” Barnhill says right now Braxton has about 30 different beers on draft, in addition to several seasonal beers. “There’s always going to be seasonals that come and go,” he says. “So while there may be 10 more styles that come up, they’ll be gone fairly quickly.

Braxton Brewing Co. has churned out a wide array of beers over its first four years, including the Graeter’s Pumpkin Pie ale and its new Vive hard seltzer.

They’re pretty popular.” One of the most popular beers in the fall is Oktober Fuel. “It’s just a very strong Oktoberfest lager,” he says. Another seasonal favorite that people really love in the fall is Graeter’s Pumpkin Pie, says Barnhill. In addition to beer, Braxton also produces a hard seltzer called Vive. “We started creating that a year and half ago and it took us about a year to get it exactly right,” says Barnhill. Since then, Braxton has partnered with FC Cincinnati as the official beer and official hard seltzer of the soccer team. Braxton is also the official hard seltzer of the Cincinnati Bengals. n www.BestofNKY.com

NKY STYLE

This Store’s Got Sole Art, streetwear and entrepreneurial spirit collide at Covington’s Sole By Style. BY KE VIN MICHELL

J

acob Cain’s interest in streetwear and sneakers first manifested as an online pursuit in high school. “It’s been a hobby of mine for about 10 years,” says the co-owner of Sole By Style. What would become his Covington streetwear store was first a way for him to flip clothing and shoes through the internet as a way to afford the items he really wanted. In college he shifted his hobby into a webbased business and found the spark to build it into something more. Cain saw that streetwear culture wasn’t being supported in Cincinnati as it was in larger cities like Chicago or Los Angeles, the latter of which is bursting with stores like Sole By Style up and down Melrose Avenue. “I knew the sneaker culture here was big enough for it,” Cain says. “It was always something that I wanted to do.”

26

NKY MAGAZINE WINTER 2019

After graduating, Cain looked for opportunities to create a brick-and-mortar store, one that would not only function as a retailer but also a gathering place for the intersecting interests of streetwear and sneaker culture. After all, the brands that dominate the trend—from Thrasher and Supreme to Air Jordan and Travis Scott—have roots in the skateboard, punk and hip-hop scenes. Streetwear culture merges fashion, art and music into a unique collective that forms its own community of collectors, enthusiasts and artists. Eventually, Cain found 617 Madison Ave. during a drive through Covington early in 2019. “I knew it right away—if this is going to happen, it’s going to be here,” he recalls. With a little help from Austin Dunbar of Covington’s Durham Brand & Co., whose office is one floor above Sole By Style, the interior was built out over two months to hold an entire wall of signature and limited-edition sneakers, several racks of clothing from popular streetwear brands and display cases of various other forms of branded merchandise. August 17 brought the store’s one-year anniversary, commemorated with a sale

Sole By Style in Covington features a wide array of exclusive and limited streetwear for sale.

event and celebration. The party featured gift card giveaways, discounts on just about everything in the store and music performed by local artists DJ Hope and Chris Crooks while customers old and new flocked to intersection of Madison and West Pike Street. “There’s definitely a whole thing that goes around it besides selling shoes and trying to make money,” Cain says of the community that builds through a store like his. With a year in the books as a company with both a physical storefront and its long-running online presence (exemplified through its popular Instagram), Cain and Sole By Style aren’t slowing down. The store just launched its YouTube channel where it posts videos showing off the visual appeal of streetwear culture and the store itself. In the next couple of years, Cain wants to find the next store’s location, for which he wants a bigger and bolder concept. In the meantime, Covington’s Sole By Style will keep growing into its role as one of the only true streetwear retailers in Northern Kentucky and a gathering place for the many people in on the trend and the community that coalesces within it. n

Brightening Up the Wintertime

Erlanger’s A&S Electric, celebrating its 50th year in business, provides homeowners with a plethora of lighting options. BY KE VIN MICHELL

A

s winter sets in, the daylight gets sparser and one’s mood, like the sky, can often stay a bit gloomy and overcast. One way to mitigate the doldrums of the colder months is to update the lighting in your home with new fixtures. Northern Kentucky homeowners have been able to rely on A&S Electric in Erlanger and its large showroom featuring a wide array of the most current style and trends in

residential lighting for the last half-century. Kyle Smith, vice president and outside salesman at A&S Electric and a member of the third generation of Smiths to run the company, points out that many of the showroom’s employees have been a part of the business for 10 years or more. As such they provide a special level of expertise and familiarity that Northern Kentucky residents can’t get at chain home improve-

ment retailers. One of the top trends in home lighting that Smith points out is the versatility of LED lights, the price of which has gone down significantly over the last few years. “They’ve really become the way to go,” he says. “They’re affordable, they last and they save you money every time you turn them on.” Stylistically, LED options also provide more interesting ways to light parts of a home. The long-lasting diodes are smaller, allowing subtle accent and spot lighting in areas where traditional screw-in bulbs could never fit.

NKY HOME and, thus, put less strain on your monthly utility bill. “It’s huge,” Smith says. “You change over a whole house to LED, it might hurt your wallet at first but you’re going to see [savings] in the first energy bill.” The long lifespan of LED diodes also largely eliminates spending on replacement bulbs. In addition, Smith points out hidden benefits such as the fact that LEDs don’t give off heat like traditional light bulbs, putting less strain on your air conditioning in the summertime. Whether Northern Kentucky homeowners are planning an interior remodel or just wanting to brainstorm new lighting solutions, Smith and A&S Electric are a great resource with their 50 years in the region and vast industry expertise. “We pride ourselves on being able to help a customer and knowing exactly what they need even if they don’t know what they need,” says Smith, adding it helps a lot to make smart purchases the first time instead of finding the best lighting through trial and error. n

Wintertime is the perfect time to update light fixtures around the home.

“You can hide an LED tape light in the little nook behind a cabinet and light up just as much as you would with an under-cabinet fixture,” explains Smith. The winter certainly lends itself to indoor remodeling, presenting an opportunity to spruce up your kitchen, bathrooms or living areas. Smith notes that some of A&S Electric’s wintertime best-sellers are ceiling fans and wall sconces, which can cast these rooms in a new light. Beyond just brightening up your home in different way, LED lights can help offset the cost of heating the house in the winter—LEDs use about 15% to 25% of the power their incandescent counterparts do

An Adventurous Escape

EarthJOY Treehouse Adventures gives everyone the opportunity to climb around the outdoors like a professional. BY JULI HALE

Without hesitation, the 13-year-old pushes her full body weight on to her foot loop, stands up and slides the hitch knot higher. Stand up, slide the knot, stand up, slide the knot. of an oak tree. An avid tree climber, Alanna isn’t a stranger to sitting among the foliage but this was her first climb using a rope and harness system. Nothing like the rope climb in gym class, this is a sophisticated system that requires knowledge of climbing equipment and knot tying expertise and is the basis of business at EarthJOY Village.

EarthJOY owner Bill Byrne instructs a climber learning the ropes

Owned and operated by Bill and Shelly Byrne, EarthJOY Treehouse Adventures in Germantown, Kentucky takes climbing beyond its typical audience of children playing in their backyards and hardcore nature enthusiasts. Using a double rope technique and adding layers of safety, the pair give essentially anyone willing to try the chance to climb to the top and see nature from a new perspective. Climbers, who are secured in a saddle harness and safety helmet, are taught how to move the knots

First-timers get a feel for rope climbing close to the ground before ascending to the forest canopy

in sequence to ascend and descend safely. “This is fun,” Alanna proclaims to no one in particular after reaching the top well before the others in her group, which includes her grandfather, Paul Hauwiller. “She loves to climb so I found something we could do together,” says Hauwiller who, sweetly calls her “squirrel” throughout their climb. Bringing people together and providing a way for them to appreciate the outdoors was the goal of Bill and Shelly Byrne when they opened EarthJOY in 2007. An engineer and physical therapist, respectively, the pair bonded over their love of the outdoors and spent much of their time together seeking out adventures that would allow them to convene with nature. “As soon as the weekend came, we sought out anything we could do for fun and recreation,” says Shelly. “We were staying at a lodge while we were whitewater rafting and I read an article on tree climbing and I just knew.” The pair traveled to Tree Climbers International in Atlanta to learn not only how to climb, but how to safely facilitate climbs for novices and teach others to become instructors. Bill regularly facilitates climbs at festivals across the country and locally at Ft. Thomas’ Tower Park. But most of the climbs he oversees today are held on the EarthJOY property. He most often leads families or groups of friends looking for a new adventure, but the climbs are also used as team building activities for businesses. For some, like Alanna, the climb is easy. For others, it takes more effort and patience. The Byrnes call it a challenge by choice. Climbers decide how high to climb and

what to do when they reach their desired elevation. Some just hang out, letting the harness and hitch hold them in place; others lie in hammocks, swing in tree chairs or learn to surf branches, all while they get to know the other adventurous people climbing around them. After enjoying the view from the canopy, Alanna is ready to descend and try another rope with another view. It only takes a few words from Bill to convince her to try it upside down. With some simple instructions, she rotates her body and lets go, easily and slowly sliding to the bottom. “That is awesome,” shouts fellow climber Annie Maxam, 14, who has reached a net platform about 30 feet off the ground and is pushing off it to swing out to the other trees. Though the girls only met just before the climb, they shout encouragement to one another and others in the group, including Annie’s dad and uncle, Bill and Bob Maxam. “We always try to do something fun and adventurous when we get together,” says Bill Maxam of Cincinnati. He learned of EarthJOY and its tree climbing opportunities at a silent auction. He knew it would be a perfect outing for him, his brother and Annie. “He always tries to surprise me,” responds Bob, who lives in Indianapolis. Many visitors to EarthJOY come from within a few hours of the property, though others come from across the country or even further. Bill recently taught a class for a group from Korea who plan to open their own tree climbing business. He also teaches primitive skills classes to those wanting to learn how to live off the land. For those wanting a bit more convenience

to their outdoor living, EarthJOY also offers treehouses for rent. “I said, ‘You know, we’ve got to add tree houses into this,’” says Shelly. With more than 200 acres of land, they had the space and, thanks to a treehouse workshop taught by arborist Pete Nelson the couple attended in 2007, they had a connection. Nelson, who hosts Treehouse Masters on Animal Planet, built their first treehouse. Today they have three. “They are like having three different kids. They are all lovely and they shine in their own way,” Shelly says of the treehouses. “I cannot commit to a favorite. It depends on the day and who I’m staying with. It depends on what I’m needing.” The Pete Nelson is a spacious two-story with large barn doors that open to the outside. The Aliyah provides a more whimsical space with a large red oak growing through the living room floor and a swinging bridge leading to a separate bedroom. The third and smallest of the three was built by Bill himself. Designed with small children in mind, it features a double loft, a wrap-around deck and a tunnel slide to the ground where you will also find swings and hammocks. Each treehouse has electricity and air conditioning for those who want more of the comforts of home, a kitchenette, a fire pit and access to hiking trails “I like the unusual. I wanted to do a round house and when I was searching, I found treehouses and then I found this place,” says Judy Cain, who stayed in the Pete Nelson treehouse for a long weekend with her husband, Michael, and their three dogs. “We wanted a place where we could bring the dogs, get away from people and unplug.” n www.BestofNKY.com

DOCTORS OF NORTHERN KENTUCKY Finding a doctor among all the providers available to choose from can seem daunting. Whether you’re looking for a general practitioner to see on a regular basis or a specialist for an emergent health care need, it’s difficult to find a comprehensive list to know your health care options close to home. Hence, NKY Magazine compiles this annual directory of 761 doctors, conveniently broken down among 66 specialties, who practice in Northern Kentucky. Our list is based off the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure’s August 2019 list of M.D. and D.O. physicians with offices in Boone, Kenton, Grant and Campbell counties. This directory has been checked for the most up-todate office addresses and contact phone numbers while removing those still licensed but reported as inactive by the state and those no longer practicing at a Northern Kentucky location. Many physicians have multiple office locations; this directory lists only each doctor’s primary practice location in Northern Kentucky. Providers are listed under the specialty they are listed with on the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure’s provided list. Questions or concerns regarding content should be directed to the Board of Medical Licensure at kbml.ky.gov.

Dr. Susan Oakley UROGYNECOLOGY

St. Elizabeth Women’s Health Center

Dr. Susan Oakley’s journey to becoming a urogynecologist with St. Elizabeth Hospital is an astonishing one that, frankly, cannot be given due justice in this small space. The summary alone—growing up in a North Carolina military family, initially going to college for musical theater (then majoring in English and French), working as a production assistant for MTV, then going on a church mission trip that was diverted from the Congo to Malawi because of political unrest in the former—is enough to demonstrate Oakley’s incredible personal story. “It changed my whole career path,” Oakley says of the mission trip, which focused on public health and caregiving and provided her a powerful memory of giving vaccinations to Malawian families. “It just was an eye-opening experience and I thought, ‘I think I want to do that and I’m pretty sure I want to take care of women.’” And that she has. After four years in the Gaza Strip during medical school, she returned to the states with a mission to help women’s pelvic floor and genital discomfort issues. In 2014, Oakley would become the first practicing urogynecologist in Northern Kentucky and since has become a regional leader in the field and an anchor of St. Elizabeth’s new Edgewood Women’s Health Center with her expertise and exceptional bedside manner. -KEVIN MICHELL

Dr. Chad Coe

INTERNAL MEDICINE, PEDIATRICS UC Health – Florence

Both of Dr. Chad Coe’s parents were teachers, so when he finished his medical schooling and came to Cincinnati with his wife, joining UC Health was a natural choice. While he splits time between his practice and teaching residents at the University of Cincinnati, both represent Coe’s desire to give back to the community. “You’re educating the next generation of doctors and people you’re going to be working with,” he says. “And it keeps you sharp, too.” Coe is board-certified to take care of both children and adults, so his internal medicine and pediatrics background allows him take care of patients of any age at his practice. That keeps his responsibilities and activities as a physician varied, a challenge that he enjoys. That wide breadth of patient types and needs is assisted by the resources available to him as a part of UC Health, between the cutting-edge research being done in the hospital system and the treatment technology available to offer his patients, particularly at Cincinnati Children’s and the new neuroscience center near the Clifton campus. “It’s always really nice to know that stuff’s available for you and available for your patients,” Coe says. -KEVIN MICHELL

Dr. Brian Mannion MEDICAL ONCOLOGY

The Christ Hospital – Fort Wright

Over 22 years of practicing oncology in Cincinnati, Dr. Brian Mannion has seen great advances in the field in terms of treatment options and the greater optimism he can give patients who are diagnosed to have a tumor. “Once upon a time, we gave them a diagnosis and they may only have a couple of options,” Mannion says. “Now they have just so many more.” Over that same span, Mannion has focused more on prostate cancer—he now does most of the medical oncology for patients receiving prostate cancer treatments in The Christ Hospital’s system. Part of what led him to concentrate more on that particular strain of cancer was the significant need—it’s the second most common cancer contracted by men in the United States. Advancements in the field have allowed Mannion to provide an array of treatment options alongside any prostate cancer diagnosis. The Christ Hospital has invested in top-notch technology, such as targeted, localized radiation therapy that minimizes negative side effects and long-term complications. Mannion appreciates that this allows him to point to real cases where treatment has helped patients and, thus, encourage those who have been newly diagnosed. “I think that’s the most gratifying part,” he says. “Actually seeing when it works—it’s very satisfying.” – KEVIN MICHELL www.BestofNKY.com

TOP DENTISTS OF NORTHERN KENTUCKY

T

his list is excerpted from the 2019 topDentists™ list, a database which includes listings of more than 60 general dentists and specialists practicing in Northern Kentucky. The list is based on thousands of detailed evaluations of dental professionals by their peers. The complete database is available at www.usatopdentists. com. For more information call 706-3640853, write P.O. Box 970, Augusta, GA 30903, email info@usatopdentists.com or visit www.usatopdentists.com

SELECTION PROCESS “If you had a patient in need of a dentist, which dentist would you refer them to?” This is the question we’ve asked thousands of dentists to help us determine who the top dentists should be. Dentists and specialists are asked to take into consideration years of experience, continuing education, manner with patients, use of

new techniques and technologies and, of course, physical results. The nomination pool of dentists consists of dentists listed online with the American Dental Association, as well as dentists listed online with their local dental societies, thus allowing virtually every dentist the opportunity to participate. Dentists are also given the opportunity to nominate other dentists that they feel should be included in our list. Respondents are asked to put aside any personal bias or political motivations and to use only their knowledge of their peer’s work when evaluating the other nominees. Voters are asked to individually evaluate the practitioners on their ballot whose work they are familiar with. Once the balloting is completed, the scores are compiled and then averaged. The numerical average required for inclusion varies depending on the average for all the nominees within the specialty and the geographic area. Borderline cases

Peter Family Dentistry is a place “where everybody knows your name, and they’re always glad you came.” But despite this somewhat old-fashioned approach to hospitality, its facility is equipped with state-of-the-art technology. While Dr. Peter’s practice spends a substantial amount of time serving patients with significant dental needs such as implants and veneers, it also reserves time for healthy patients and families. Whatever your needs may be, the caring team at Peter Family Dentistry will always welcome you.

are given a careful consideration by the editors. Voting characteristics and comments are taken into consideration while making decisions. Past awards a dentist has received, as well as status in various dental academies, can factor in our decision. Once the decisions have been finalized, the included dentists are checked against state dental boards for disciplinary actions to make sure they have an active license and are in good standing with the board. Then, letters of congratulations are sent to all the listed dentists. Of course, there are many fine dentists who are not included in this representative list. It is intended as a sampling of the great body of talent in the field of dentistry in the United States. A dentist’s inclusion on our list is based on the subjective judgments of his or her fellow dentists. While it is true that the lists may at times disproportionately reward visibility or popularity, we remain confident that our polling methodology largely corrects for any biases and that these lists continue to represent the most reliable, accurate, and useful list of dentists available anywhere.

Dr. Mulzer has been helping patients of Northern Kentucky since 1999. He is dedicated to offering patients the best treatment in a comfortable environment. His office has the latest technology, like one-day crowns with Cerec, invisible tooth straightening with Invisalign, and soft tissue laser treatment. For his patients’ comfort, there are individual TVs in each room, massaging dental chairs and a drink station in the waiting room. At Pinnacle Family Dentistry, we treat our patients like family. We pride ourselves in staying on time with appointments because your time is just as valuable as ours. We also try to educate our patients on any treatment needed. We want to make sure you understand why you need something repaired, what all the options are to complete the work, and, most importantly, how to keep it from happening in the future. We welcome all ages in the practice, from child to adult. It is easier to have the whole family seen at one office instead of driving all over the area to different locations for each age group in your family.

NKY WEALTH MANAG E M E N T

Looking Ahead to 2020 Johnson Investment Counsel’s Michael Stanis and Scott Wyckoff preach patience in financial planning. BY KE VIN MICHELL

A

fter a decade of economic growth, fears of a recession are swirling among other societal and political instigators of financial volatility. It’s enough to make people wonder if there is some sort of crystal ball to look into for assurance on how safe their investments and savings are. Michael Stanis and Scott Wyckoff, senior portfolio managers and principals at Johnson Investment Counsel, have seen before how these fears can manifest into impulsive actions and stress the importance of having a long-term plan and sticking to it. “It’s always wait-and-see,” says Wyckoff, adding that no one knows when a crash or recession will actually happen. “Our way of doing it for 55 years at this point is set the long-term target for your investment portfolio and stick to it and don’t do anything rash.” “We don’t profess to be able to predict the markets—if we could do that, we’d have something that nobody else does,” Stanis adds with a laugh. Advisers like he and Wyckoff, though, are always keeping a close eye on developments for their clients. Trade conflict and talks between the United States and China, as well as the upcoming 2020 elections, are creating volatility amid an economy that is slowing though still growing, which is only natural after the record-setting run of growth after the 2008 recession. Wyckoff points out that isn’t unexpected and, thus, not a cause for panic. For his clients and Stanis’, it’s about having a personal wealth and savings plan that has steady long-term goals while ensuring short-term liquidity needs are met through investing in assets with lower volatility. Stanis explains that that same volatility can present unique opportunities to buy high quality stocks and assets that will briefly be available at a reduced cost. Though Wyckoff admits there are unique factors heading into 2020, such as the open

conflict between the president and the Federal Reserve and the extremity of difference with regards to tax code policy among 2020 electoral candidates, he emphasizes the crucial difference between short-term and long-term political effects on the stock market. “In the past, presidential elections have not had all that much influence on stock market performance over time,” he points out. “In the short term, yes; but over time, the stock market goes up regardless of who’s in the White House, on average.” But above all, wealth management and saving for retirement is about personal goals and, in turn, personal responsibility. “Nothing outside of your control matters as much as controlling what you can control: namely, living below your means and saving your money,” Wyckoff says. “If you don’t do

that, it doesn’t matter who wins the election as it relates to your nest egg, because you won’t have one. Control what you can control.” Stanis agrees and explains it in terms of a football analogy: It may not be the sexy answer, but long-term money management is about the fundamentals just like a winning football team always works on blocking and tackling. “As people approach retirement, I like to tell people to minimize those nondiscretionary expenses that some have such as a mortgage, fixed car payments, that sort of thing,” he says. “Whatever income you do have coming into retirement, if you don’t have those fixed expenses it will make it much more comfortable to absorb any of these waves that you may see with the changes in the market.” n

NKY RETIREMENT

Making the Most of Retirement Colonial Heights & Gardens remains committed to giving residents the best experience possible. BY CORINNE MIN ARD

C

olonial Heights & Gardens, an independent living and personal care community in Florence, knows the value of longevity. It has been a fixture of the community for more than 30 years and much of its staff has been with the community for more than a decade. “We’ve been around here so long,” says Pam Huesman, sales and marketing director. “We’re sort of known, especially in Boone County, as the place people want to go when they’re ready to sell their home and start an easier way to live as a senior.” While the community is known for many of its longtime amenities—its parklike setting, convenient location and family-friendly atmosphere—Huesman says its residents also appreciate the organization’s commitment to staying a quality community. “Every year we pick something in the apartments to upgrade,” says Huesman. This year, that means replacing many of the doors in each unit—from the closets to the bathroom—with new white doors. Also, the community is giving its indoor common spaces a cosmetic renovation. This includes the lobby, dining room, community room, library and marketing office in the Heights (the independent living facility) and the activity space, library and memory unit in the Gardens (the personal care facility). Previous updates have included screening in all of the balconies in the Heights and expanding the communal back patio.

“We have a great reputation and it’s the reputation we value and we want to consistently live up to. We’re very proud of it and we’ve worked very hard to maintain and retain. It’s something that we want to keep up so that generation after generation, we can continue to be the place for people to move to,” says Huesman. In addition to building updates, Colonial Heights & Gardens has also been updating its services. Personal care was originally housed in the Heights with independent living before it was given its own space in the Gardens 15 years ago. That change allowed the community to offer 179 independent apartments, 61 personal care units and nine memory units, thus increasing the capacity of Colonial Heights & Gardens. To allow more people to take advantage of Colonial Heights & Gardens’ amenities and expertise, the community started offering respite care. “A lot of people have used it if they’re taking care of someone with Alzheimer’s at home or they’re taking care of someone with dementia

The welcoming grounds of Colonial Heights & Gardens demonstrate the community’s care for its residents.

and they want to go on vacation. They want to be able to leave them somewhere where they know they’re going to be safe and then be able to come back,” says Huesman. Other amenities Colonial Heights & Gardens has added to its repertoire over the years include lecture series, planned outings to area attractions such as the Aronoff, ceramics, social clubs, a computer learning center, a theater group and more. Huesman says that community is able to stay dedicated to its residents because it is part of the Retirement Housing Foundation, a nationwide nonprofit organization. “We specialize in housing for seniors and affordable housing for seniors. It’s giving them the biggest bang for their buck. It’s a really wonderful organization and we’re very happy to be part of it,” she says. n

NKY BANKING

Putting the ‘Community’ in Community Banking Commonwealth Bank & Trust prioritizes service to both customers and their communities. BY HE ATHER CHURCHM AN

W

hat’s the benefit of a locally owned, Kentucky-based bank like Commonwealth Bank & Trust? Trust, experience and a personal touch. Headquartered in Louisville, Commonwealth Bank & Trust operates Northern Kentucky offices in Edgewood and Florence. Commonwealth stands apart from other banks by remaining true to its fundamentals. “Banking is different now than it was 50 years ago. Many bankers don’t have specific education on our business. Our staff knows the business and our customers’ needs because we’ve been in it for quite a long time,” says Corey Sidebottom, senior vice president and Northern Kentucky market executive at the bank. In a time when turnover and technology regularly change the pace of banking, Commonwealth customers can count on seeing the same faces and a full range of services from online banking to commercial lending and treasury management. “Our customers can talk to people who aren’t going to be gone tomorrow,” says Lori Burdine, vice president and commercial lending and business banker. “I left banking temporarily and when I came back my customers remembered me. We treat our customers like family.” Commonwealth employees also treat the Northern Kentucky community like family. LaDona Peavler King, Florence branch manager, is a member of the board at CASA, a child advocacy organization serving Boone, Campbell, Kenton and Pendleton counties. CASA’s mission is to give a voice and support to abused and neglected children through court-appointed volunteer advocacy. “We’re having the second annual Heroes

Corey Sidebottom, LaDona Peavler King, Shelly Lenhof and Lori Burdine

for Children breakfast on October 17, with the hopes of gaining corporate sponsors and individual volunteers,” says Burdine. Interested parties should contact Burdine or Peavler King at Commonwealth’s Florence location at 7135 Houston Road. Reputation is everything in community banking and Sidebottom knows Commonwealth’s is one of the best. “We have to make hard decisions sometimes,” he says. “Decisions that don’t put money in our pockets any faster but that do help our customers in the long term—that kind of service pays off. Our customers remember our name when it comes to referrals and repeat business.” Commonwealth has more than doubled in size in Northern Kentucky in the four years since it took over the First Security Trust Bank offices. The company has more

than $1 billion in bank assets and $1.8 billion in trust assets. The bank is experiencing physical growth as well; it’s opening a new, high-tech Edgewood branch in 2020. Of course, Commonwealth is keeping it in the family, with one of its clients performing the renovation work on the new office. “We had the opportunity to extend the tenure of a client relationship by involving them in our office buildout and we were excited to do so,” explains Sidebottom. “It fits right in with who we are and the services we provide.” The bank is also preparing for its third annual Trunk or Treat Halloween event at the Florence location. “People who hustle and care fit in here,” Sidebottom says. “We’re really proud of our bank’s ties to the Northern Kentucky community and the work we do here.” n www.BestofNKY.com
