This year we hosted seven local events with about 1,000 attendees and formed a partnership with CincinnatiCares.org to make nonprofit volunteering for alums more social and fun. Meredith Meyer is CEO of Infinite Potential, a consultancy that helps organizations create strategic talent plans and tackle tough business problems related to talent. Previously, she was VP of Strategic Planning and Talent at KnowledgeWorks, a social enterprise focused on K-12 education. Meyer started her career as a brand manager at P&G, developing business and marketing plans for brands like Tide and Oral-B toothbrushes in the US, Asia, Eastern Europe and South America. Robert Miller works for Orvis, a familyowned business specializing in high-end fly-fishing, hunting and sporting goods, as the company’s market research supplier, serial startup partner and fishing manager. Stuart Schaefer is a private equity managing director, technology entrepreneur, executive-in-residence at the Univer-

sity of Cincinnati and chair of the P&G Alumni Network Cincinnati. Schaefer worked 16 years in P&G finance on a variety of health care and food and beverage businesses, as well as corporate financial planning and analysis. He also enjoyed searching for innovative business building technologies as part of P&G Connect & Develop. His policy of saying ‘yes’ to a conversation with any P&G alum helped to grow the network. Michael Stanis has been a portfolio manager with Johnson Investment Counsel since 2012 and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst and Certified Financial Planner designations. Prior to Johnson Investment Counsel, Stanis worked for 20 years in corporate finance including over 17 years with Procter & Gamble. He earned an MBA from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business (and graduated summa cum laude with a BBA in Finance and Government from the University of Notre Dame. n

Cincinnati Cares T

he Cincinnati chapter of the Procter & Gamble Alumni Network is now partnered with Cincinnati Cares, forging a relationship that provides Cincinnati P&G alumni with unparalleled ways to engage in and assist with the region’s most pressing needs. Cincinnati Cares started as a way to create a network of places to help the community through volunteering, leadership assistance and active involvement. The website, CincinnatiCares.org, has since become the most popular way for Greater Cincinnatians to help the causes and

nonprofit organizations they believe in. The platform allows for residents to shape the community around them through easy access to volunteer opportunities. The Alumni Network encourages its members to join Cincinnati Cares and get involved. One program that may be of particular interest to alumni is the BoardBank initiative for connecting area leaders with organizations seeking board and committee members to guide their continued efforts. Cincinnati P&G alumni can sign up at the Cincinnati Cares website, where they can detail their

background with Proctor & Gamble and interest in helping local nonprofits. The partnership’s eventual goal is for any P&G alumni to get involved in any of the 1,200 philanthropic events and 500 nonprofit organizations while also being able to connect with other alums that will be involved in the same. The end result is to make volunteering more social and fun for everyone involved. The Cincinnati P&G Alumni Network will provide more information to members through emails as the partnership reaches new milestones. n

2018–19 Alumni Network Events MARY LYNN FERGUSONMCHUGH—SEPTEMBER 12, 2018 AT THE AMERICAN RED CROSS HQ Mary Lynn Ferguson-McHugh has led a wide range of businesses in her 29 years at P&G, including her current role as group president of global family care and her involvement with P&G Ventures. At this event she shared lessons on business and leadership. Ferguson-McHugh’s record of sustained results achieved by building strong teams provided great insights into leadership for attendees.

ROGER DAVID—OCTOBER 17, 2018 Gold Star Chili’s CEO explained the story behind the company’s #SmallBatchChili marketing campaign and how a challenger carves out white space by focusing on what it does best. Northlich, Adweek’s top Ohio agency, hosted this event in their new office space while refreshments were provided by alum Mike Burton, founder of Mason’s 16 Lots Brewery.

QUEEN CITY ANGELS—NOVEMBER 13, 2018 AT 1819 INNOVATION HUB Queen City Angels is the second-most prominent angel investing group of the 370 that exist nationwide and around half of its over 60 members are P&G alumns. This event provided an opportunity for P&G alumni to learn about ways to engage with local entrepreneurs, as well as the fundamentals of angel investing. Queen City Angels members have invested over $60 million in more than 90 companies and coach and advise Cincinnati-area entrepreneurs on customer understanding, financial and business plan optimization, supply chain management and execution of sales and marketing. The group just launched its largest fund to date—the over $10 million First Fund VI—intended to provide capital to promising new startups.

HOLIDAY PARTY—DECEMBER 12, 2018 AT THE ART OF ENTERTAINING 2018’s holiday party was sponsored by Johnson Investment Counsel, run by P&G alum Mike Stanis. It featured gourmet appetizers, dessert, wine pairings and specialty beers enjoyed with the company of P&G alumni and their friends and guests. Hosted at O’Bryonville’s The Art of Entertaining, the menu was the creation of turning their chefs loose to do their creative best for the attendees. 8

HEALTH INNOVATIONS SUMMIT— JANUARY 31, 2019 AT 1819 INNOVATION HUB This full day of education and networking was designed to benefit P&G alums working in health care. The summit, which featured 22 leaders of innovation from the Cincinnati area including eight P&G alums, was the result of a partnership between the Cincinnati P&G Alumni Network, the

University of Cincinnati and UC Health. From the invention and implementation of Benadryl, to pioneering transplants, to changing lives through genetic insight, Cincinnati is a leader in health innovation. As health care continues to grow, P&G alumni participation seems to be growing even faster as the business of health care becomes more focused on consumers.


JENNIFER DAVIS—MARCH 20, 2019 AT THE AMERICAN RED CROSS HQ Davis leads P&G’s global feminine care business, serving women and girls in over 125 countries with leading brands including Always, Always Discreet, Tampax, Naturella and Whisper. At this event, she spoke of her experiences managing a portfolio of over $4 billion in annual sales, working to increase global awareness of women’s personal care issues and creating access of sanitary products to girls in need, focusing on girls who are missing school.

JAVIER POLIT—MAY 15, 2019 AT THE AMERICAN RED CROSS HQ Polit is P&G’s current chief innovation officer who focuses on harnessing data, analytics and artificial intelligence to drive overall growth while better serving consumers and employees. Since joining P&G as CIO in 2017, Polit has overseen an unprecedented investment in IT by the company, underscoring the critical nature of technology in growing and protecting P&G’s business as well as delivering connected products that improve everyday life. At this talk, Polit talked about building an industry-leading organization and his responsibility for the company’s technological platforms and information security, including the data

and analytics used in the research, production, shipping and marketing of products and the collecting, transferring, storing and processing of consumer, customer, employee, vendor and investor information. n

Kristen Wevers: Growing into Health Care By Jeff Wallner

K

risten Hall Wevers remembers calling her parents to tell them she was going to sell toilet paper to help pay for medical school. When she told her parents that the job was with Procter & Gamble, they were encouraged. Little did they know that it was the start of a 17-year career for Wevers at P&G that would later set the stage for her successful return to health care. “I didn’t realize the impact P&G had on my life until I left it,” Wevers says. “I grew up at Procter and Gamble, professionally and personally.” Wevers, who earned her Master’s degree from Xavier University and Bachelor’s degree from Denison University, was recruited by P&G out of college and would go on to serve in leadership roles with the company in global media relations, internal communications and consumer relations, as well as in pharmaceuticals. “My job every day was to develop myself, those around me and to build the business,” Wevers remembers. “P&G invested in helping you become a strategic business leader no matter the function you were part of.” Wevers currently serves as senior VP and Chief Marketing & Communications Officer for UC Health, where she has served since June 2016. After leaving P&G, she spent six years as VP for Messer Construction before ultimately returning to the health care realm with Mercy Health. There, she helped align seven individual local health systems and ancillary services in Ohio and Kentucky under a singular brand. The values instilled during Wevers’ time at P&G and those who influenced her are a significant part of her daily work to this day. She credits the P&G Alumni Network for helping foster those relationships. “No matter how they separated from the company, this global network of people 10

Kristen Wevers has worked in health care for over nine years after 17 years spent with P&G and six years at Messer Construction. who used to work with Procter share that connection and courage to change the world,” she says. “P&G gave me these opportunities. I certainly worked hard but P&G equipped me with these leadership capabilities.” Although Wevers grew up about 30 miles west of Philadelphia, she shares P&G’s commitment to the Cincinnati community. That was never more evident than when tragedy struck the Queen City last September with the mass shooting at Fifth Third Bank on Fountain Square. Shortly after the shooting, Wevers leveraged her relationships within the local business community to see how she could help. “I felt this incredible personal, ethical and moral responsibility for the care and

safety of employees,” Wevers recalls. “It was deeply impactful. I absolutely wanted to support Fifth Third and the community in this. It touched me deeply.” Wevers served as chair of the Cincinnati Strong Victims Fund that was created to help victims recover from the tragedy. More than $1.2 million was raised and donated to the people directly impacted by the shooting that left three dead and two others injured. To this day, Wevers recalls walking into P&G headquarters in downtown Cincinnati for the first time and being humbled by the experience. “You didn’t have to know how to do the job the first day,” she says. “They’ll invest in you. It’s about having the right people.” n



Dan Meyer: Manufacturing Opportunity By Jeff Wallner

D

an Meyer’s vision for Nehemiah Manufacturing was derived from his faith. The brands that have helped sustain the company resulted from relationships Meyer built during the more than three years he spent at Procter and Gamble. “We wouldn’t be Nehemiah without Procter and Gamble,” Meyer says. “The relationship went beyond just working for them for three and a half years.” Meyer, who was with P&G from 1978 to 1981, founded Nehemiah in 2009. The company is named after the Old Testament prophet of the same name who helped rebuild the city of Jerusalem one stone at a time, a fitting metaphor for the lives that Meyer has helped rebuild one opportunity at a time. “We had kind of the “why” of our company, which was to help people who needed it most with sustainable employment,” Meyer explains. “But we needed a brand. We talked to P&G’s global development guys and asked them if they had a brand to outsource. It happened to be a very small toddler line of products—Kandoo—under the behemoth Pampers brand.” With more than 30 years of consumer package goods experience, Meyer knows what it takes to make a company successful. But what Nehemiah accomplishes goes beyond the bottom line. From the start, Meyer wanted to help people in the inner city by giving them career opportunities regardless of their education or background. “We’ve seen greatness achieved,” he says. Rayshaun Holt was tried as an adult and convicted of murder at the age of 15. Holt came out of prison educated and rehabilitated, but few companies would take a chance on him. Nehemiah did. Holt now is a second shift supervisor and an inspiration to those around him. “He’s been transformative,” Meyer says. 12

Dan Meyer founded Nehemiah Manufacturing in 2009 after three decades in consumer packaged goods, including time at Procter & Gamble. “He helps everyone. Everyone here helps everyone else.” Another example is Michael Taylor, who battled drug and alcohol addiction and spent time in prison for burglary. It seemed impossible for Taylor to find a job until Nehemiah gave him a chance. Taylor was promoted seven times in his first five years with the company, eventually to operations manager. “We found that the most loyal, most productive people were the people that needed a second chance,” observes Meyer. “All we ask is two things: show up on time and be a team player. I don’t care what your past is, I don’t care what your education is.” Meyer, 63, attended the University of Pennsylvania. He is a life-long Cincinnatian who grew up on the West Side and was attending Elder High School when he met

his future wife, Debi, who went to Seton. They have three daughters: Jennifer, 34, Kaitlin, 31, and Kristen, 28. Nehemiah works closely with the City of Cincinnati and social service agencies such as CityLink Center, St. Vincent DePaul, Jobs Plus and City Gospel Mission to find opportunities for at-risk adults. And the company continues to grow—last year it opened a $12 million, 172,000-squarefoot facility in Lower Price Hill. Meyer believes what Nehemiah has accomplished is in keeping with P&G’s moral standards. “Their moral code drives what they do every day,” says Meyer about P&G. “They are driven by more than the almighty dollar. It’s how do we make a difference every day by being invested in the community?” n

Bob McDonald: Choosing the Harder Right By Kevin Michell

W

hen speaking about leadership or his experiences in the business world, Bob McDonald likes to bring up a crucial misquoting of Charles Darwin—the famous naturalist never himself said that evolution is the “survival of the fittest” but rather “it is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent; it is the one most adaptable to change.” Change is inherent to McDonald’s life story, especially when examining his career pivots from attending West Point to running Procter & Gamble to taking leadership of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. Through each stage and many in between, Bob McDonald has willingly embraced change. “I love to learn,” McDonald says, noting the diverse education he received at West Point. His studies ran the gamut from military training in various warfare settings to taking classes in philosophy and literature. West Point also provided him valuable lessons in leadership that would stay with him throughout his life. It was there he learned the value of assembling the right team and the portion of the Cadet’s Prayer that would become his lifelong mantra: “choose the harder right instead of the easier wrong.” That mantra would quickly come into play after West Point. After completing his five-year army commitment—and an MBA from the University of Utah that he attained through night and weekend classes—McDonald looked to the private sector for the next leg of his career journey. Procter & Gamble’s mission of improving the lives of consumers attracted him to the company and led him to joining P&G in 1980 at the age of 27. “When I left the military, I said ‘you know, I want to live and work in one city my whole life like the childhood I had,’” McDonald recalls with a laugh. “I joined 14

Bob McDonald stands with President Barack Obama in the Oval Office during his time as Secretary of Veterans Affairs. the Procter & Gamble company and I obviously didn’t predict globalization.” After nine years, McDonald was sent to Toronto to lead P&G’s Canadian laundry business. He worried this was some sort of punishment. Rather, it was an effect of P&G’s prescience of the expanding global economy. The company was building a set of leaders who could navigate international markets and shepherd the company after it entered them. All the same, McDonald had no idea where this move would eventually take him. “I thought I’d go to Canada for three years and come back to Cincinnati,” says McDonald. “That three-year term in Canada ended up being a 15-year tour that included Canada, the Philippines, Japan and then Brussels.”

This world tour of leading P&G in global markets provided Bob McDonald with many more opportunities to learn and gain new perspectives on business, culture and society. “Every one of those moves, for my family and me, was incredibly interesting,” McDonald observes. “It not only satisfied curiosities, but it raised other curiosities.” This path led to his ultimate ascent to be president and CEO of Procter & Gamble. During his tenure, he raised P&G’s stock price by 60 while adding a billion new consumers. But it also crystallized his philosophy of values-based leadership. “The major thread of continuity is the focus on purpose,” McDonald says, explaining that all people need purpose, a focus on an outcome, to guide them. In his 33 years with P&G, McDonald found

But this motivation is woven through everything else in his career, including why he applied for West Point in the first place and his willingness to accept the challenge that would immediately follow his time at P&G. In 2014, President Barack Obama was looking for a business leader to head the Department of Veterans Affairs and reached out to McDonald, who accepted despite knowing he was walking into an organization in crisis that inhabited a sector that he had never been a part of before. Once again, McDonald chose the harder right and the challenges that would come along with it. He started with the biggest problem the VA had to confront—that caring for veterans had to focus on the veterans themselves. “When an organization is in crisis, it tends to focus on itself rather than the customer,” McDonald explains. This was brought into sharp relief after McDonald gave out his cell phone number at his first national press conference as secretary. A veteran called him directly, despondent

and considering suicide, and McDonald activated the crisis network to get this veteran the help needed before hope was lost. McDonald immediately took measures to make getting help from the VA more attainable, using lessons from his time at P&G to retrain the organization in human-centered design and applied his model for a high-performance organization. He also assembled a team drawing from many elements of his past, bringing together the most talented people he had met from West Point to P&G who could help reshape the VA. “These people were just incredible,” McDonald describes. For him, building a capable, impressive team was paramount as a leader. “I want the people around me to be smarter than me, to be better leaders than me, to be people I can learn from.” During his tenure, McDonald and Sloan Gibson, who was in his graduating class at West Point, achieved one of their biggest goals: for veterans to be able to get same-day primary care or mental health assistance at any VA facility.

Today, Bob McDonald continues to demonstrate his service-based leadership through involvement with organizations such as the Partnership for Public Service, the Institute for Veterans and Military Families and the digital network for current and former members of the military, RallyPoint, among others. In 2017, he received the honor of his lifetime: West Point’s Distinguished Graduate Award. To McDonald, that award was both validation for living a life in line with the motto “duty, honor, country” and motivation to keep working for others, to keep choosing the harder rights. “I’m a work in progress,” McDonald says. “I don’t feel old at all and I don’t feel like I’ve gotten to any destination yet. I’m on a journey and I’m continuing that journey.” But, when allowing himself a moment to look back on the path he’s walked, McDonald is ultimately fulfilled with where it has led him. “How many people get to live three different lives? Billy Cyr: A Fresh New Challenge By Kevin Michell

I

n the early 1980s, Billy Cyr caught the eye of Princeton University’s director of student employment after running a newspaper distribution business on campus, through which he earned profits equal to his annual tuition. When representatives from Procter & Gamble came to recruit at Princeton, Cyr’s name was one of the first that director suggested. This set him on the path to 19 years spent in P&G’s food and beverage division where he cut his teeth expanding that sector of the company through intense competition with established giants like Coca-Cola and Frito Lay. This set a precedent for his willingness to take on new professional challenges. “You had to be more of an insurgent, you had to figure out the path,” observes Cyr about Procter & Gamble being a sort of underdog. In 2004, he led a leveraged buyout of the Sunny Delight brand and then ran the business after its sale to J.W. Childs. Cyr shepherded a turnaround for the brand after building a team around him from scratch and making tough decisions to encourage long-term growth. “The highs were higher, the lows were lower and they happened a hell of a lot more often,” Cyr says. His next act would again send him into something new, stepping in to lead a public company that had been around for a decade and whose founders were active in day-to-day oversight. When Cyr joined FreshPet in 2016, he knew what this new challenge entailed: fit into the company’s established leadership and set a course for growth that would factor in the founders’ goals and the desires of shareholders. To do that, Cyr took a cue from someone he had worked with at Procter & Gamble— Steve Donovan, who had applied some analytical rigor to the food and beverage division in the 1990s while maximizing the team that was already in place. 16

Billy Cyr spent 20 years with P&G before running Sunny Delight Beverages and, now, FreshPet. Cyr came up with solutions and then went individually to the board members and founders for their input, creating a stronger plan of action from their feedback. When Cyr was announced as CEO on July 27, 2016, the refrigerated cat and dog food producer was trading at $8.86. The company’s shares are now each worth over $45. In his three years thus far, he’s created $1.4 billion worth of value for the company. Creating that success by marrying his own analytical acumen and the perspectives of stakeholders who predated him at FreshPet is something Cyr attributes to valuing the perspectives of a team around him. That entails working to understand different viewpoints and using them to increase the efficacy of any action. “One of things that I’ve found,” Cyr says, “especially in my Sunny D experience but now in FreshPet as well, is whenever you have people who are well-intentioned, they have great experience, they’re very smart and they say something that makes

absolutely no sense, do not discard it. Do not disregard it. Figure out in what context is that statement true.” Looking back on his formative years with P&G, Cyr observes that eight people he worked closely with in the 1990s have themselves become CEOs, a testament to the power of the P&G network and the confidence alumni should have in reaching out to others for advice, references or board positions. “You know the values, you know the thinking and problem solving skills, you know they’re there. You know there’s a common base of capability that no matter where they were in the P&G world, they have this kind of skill set, this set of values.” As Cyr continues on as CEO of FreshPet, he gets to enjoy being close to his childhood home of Palmerton, Pennsylvania while also enjoying the continued execution of the company’s mission. “We are fundamentally changing the way people feed their pets,” says Cyr, “and that’s really what we’re all about.” n
