elcome to the eighth edition of our P&G Alumni Network publication. We hope you enjoy reading about our extraordinary members and our many local opportunities to get involved. This has been a unique year. We expanded our reach to include Columbus, Dayton, Lexington, Louisville and Indianapolis. Alums have been attending our events from these nearby cities, but we hadn’t officially included them in our planning. Now we will. Micheal Triplett, who is profiled in this insert, lives and works in Columbus. Last year we described details of the seven events and 1,000 registrations we had, including one of our most ambitious to date, the 2019 Health Innovations Summit. Since March of 2020 we have been in a COVID-19 shutdown world. We are still adjusting to how your Chapter can continue to provide unique educational, networking and fun events. In May we hosted our first webinar and we expect more in the future. Our chapter is unique. The Cincinnati Chapter has 5,000 members and is part of a global network of about 37,000. Our objective is to build a Cincinnati alumni community that will connect members with each other for business, volunteering, social events, tours, the alumni business directory, social media and personal references. Stuart was recognized as a Wallman Scholar where he earned an MBA magna cum laude from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Stuart has been the chair of the P&G Alumni Cincinnati since 2011. Michael Stanis has been a senior portfolio manager with Johnson Investment Counsel since 2012 and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) designations. Prior to Johnson Investment Counsel, Mike worked for 20 years in corporate finance including over 17 years with Procter & Gamble. COVID-19 WEBINAR – MAY 13, 2020 The initial webinar hosted by the Cincinnati Chapter of the P&G Alumni Network was an inspiring, insightful and actionprovoking conversation with a focus on the COVID-19 crisis. This webinar shared a few of their stories to recognize the good work that many P&G Alumni are doing and, even more importantly, to share insights and lessons so we can continue to do even more. When she was approached by FiberShield.org, a coalition of paperboard and packaging companies that’s making and donating single-use face shields, she pivoted fast to help, putting

Venti-Now was created, in part, with a seed grant from P&G and its low-cost ventilators have just received FDA approval. The goal is to license the design for manufacture around the world. n

History of the P&G Alumni Cincinnati Chapter " orn in 2004, the Cincinnati Chapter is the largest and most active Chapter with the most variety of events in the Global Alumni Network. Founded by Jeff Goldstein in 2004 with 100 members by the end of that year, the chapter has grown to 5,000 members today with about seven diverse events and 1,000 registrations a year. Many alums have contributed to this growth as leaders, sponsors, volunteers and attendees and we continue to grow and experiment with ways to provide unique experiences, education, networking and fun! Before there was a Cincinnati Chapter there was a Global Network. It all started when a marketing alum with a recruiting practice organized a reunion in Chicago in 2000. A P&G executive named A.G. Lafley had been contacted to attend. Right before the event A.G. was promoted to CEO of P&G and when he attended the event he found value in the networking and accumulated knowledge of the alumni. Coming out of that event, the Global alumni network as we know it today was born. In 2003, Jeff Goldstein was asked to do a survey of alumni to see if chapters were something that alumni desired. The results were overwhelmingly positive. From this Jeff volunteered to found the Cincinnati Chapter. The objective was to provide alumni opportunities they would

not otherwise have and this objective continues to today. The first event in August 2004 was a private event at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, two weeks before the grand opening to the public. Charlotte Otto and Ed Rigaud (P&G alum and first executive director of the Freedom Center) were speakers at the event. By the end of the year there were 100 members in the Cincinnati Chapter. Over the years the chapter has grown in size and many people have been part of the success. Today, the chapter is still run like a startup. There are a few events we know and repeat, but to keep growing and keep the chapter fresh we plan at least one event each year that is nothing like what we’ve done before. Some have flopped, but most have been great. We put our contact info on our invitations and we want to hear from you. We are excited for what comes next, and if you have ideas or would like to participate there is plenty of fun and personal growth to spare. n 0 ' ! L U M N I 7


0ETE "LACKSHAW Pushing Forward By David Holthaus

R

ight out of school, politics was Pete Blackshaw’s calling. With a bachelor’s in the subject from University of California and a few years working in the California legislature, he became immersed in that state’s myriad issues. “I was like a policy wonk,” he says. On the advice of a mentor, he went to graduate school in business at Harvard, and, when it came time to find an internship, he had opportunities at, among other high-profile companies, AOL, Microsoft and Procter & Gamble. Despite his West Coast roots, he chose P&G. “I didn’t know anything about Procter & Gamble, or Cincinnati for that matter,” he says. “But I felt Procter would give me the essential experience I needed.” Even though politics was still his plan, in the back of his mind he saw himself starting a business one day and felt P&G would give him the chops he needed to do that. “The leadership experience and the growth experience of one summer at Procter kind of blew me away,” he says. He eventually did start a business, exited it, and left Cincinnati for several years to pursue a career in consumer marketing with one of Europe’s, and the world’s, biggest food companies, Nestle. In 2018, he returned to Cincinnati to lead Cintrifuse, the Over-the-Rhine based, 8 0 ' ! L U M N I

big-company backed accelerator for entrepreneurship. Throughout all of these endeavors, he’s been able to use his experience at P&G to help him push forward. As a new employee at P&G, Blackshaw went to work on the Bounty brand, launching a couple of new products, including Bounty Napkins. But his most formative experience came in a new project P&G was moving on. It was the ‘90s and something was changing how companies viewed marketing. It was called The Internet. Blackshaw began exploring how to effectively use the relatively new platform to connect with consumers, leading to P&G’s first interactive marketing team. “That’s what they called it then,” he says. He created a task force of summer interns to help the giant company figure out the potential for this new technology. “The logic was that all the college graduates were really close to the technology,” he says. P&G leaders realized they had a lot to learn about it. “They brought a real humility to emerging technology and the internet,” Blackshaw says. “[Then CEO] John Pepper had t he humility to say we’re the world’s most powerful organization, but I will give you, the younger generation, the power to tell us where the future’s going. That takes humility.”

A humbling moment occurred during that time with P&G’s launch of Olean, its brand name for olestra, a fat substitute that was to be added to snacks and many other food products. The product immediately faced a backlash from some consumer g roups t hat sa id it cou ld cause unpleasant and unappetizing side effects. The worldwide web was a very effective vehicle for spreading the anti-olestra message. Blackshaw was involved in trying to manage the fallout for the company. “It sparked this big ‘aha’ that the internet is becoming the world’s biggest focus group and that focus group is not just contained in one room, it’s actually touching buyer behavior everywhere,” he says. Blackshaw learned enough about the viral nature of consumer sentiment that in 1999 he started Planet Feedback, an internet portal that gathered and analyzed consumer opinions from the growing range of online sources. A few years later, the startup merged with a Cincinnati-based search engine and data-mining company, which was eventually acquired by information giant Nielsen. “That built a lot of my confidence in Cincinnati as a place to start a business,” he says. n


-IKE 4RIPLETT An Entrepreneurial Itch By Liz Engel

M

ike Triplett has had the big exit, the milestone sale that most startup founders dream of. Last year, his clinical stage gene therapy company, Myonexus Therapeutics, sold to a Boston biotech company, Sarepta, for $245 million upfront. But there were no marked celebrations. No popping of champagne. The process, he says, was time consuming. Grueling. At times, overwhelming. But when it was all said and done? Triplett couldn’t wait to go back out and build the next one. You could say it’s an entrepreneurial itch he’s been scratching since his days at Procter & Gamble. W hile the stint was relatively brief—Triplett started his career at P&G, first as an intern in 1995 in food and beverage, and then as a product development engineer in baby care from 1997-2000—it was incredibly influential. Triplett, whose background is chemical engineering, was involved in raw material research and development, specifically as P&G moved its diaper closing systems from adhesive to Velcro. “For me, Procter was immensely valuable, from a leadership development prospective to the communication style, which is very militaristic, everything has to be written in a one-page memo,” he says. “You can have a thousand pages of detail or graphs or images behind it, but you’ve got to be able to convey your point in a one-page memo. I’ve taken that with me. And the discipline and how Procter pursued innovation.” He ultimately left to pursue his Ph.D. Afterward, he landed at Ventaira Pharmaceuticals, a venture-backed startup and spinout of the Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus. The company ultimately failed—as most startups do. But it was his first taste of that world. “It was very different from P&G,” he says. “But I always took the disciplines I

learned to maximize the strategic value and efficiency of the work.” He helped co-found Myonexus in early 2017, following stints at firms like Battelle and N8 Medical, a development stage medical device company, where he served as COO and CEO, respectively. The idea for Myonexus was based on research from Nationwide Children’s Hospital, developing first-ever corrective gene therapies for Limb-girdle muscular dystrophies, a group of rare, degenerative disorders. The acquisition by Sarepta was announced in February 2019. The sale was worth roughly $245 million upfront, Triplett says, with millions more in upside potential. The exit, while arduous, was “immensely satisfying,” Triplett says. He has tried to slow down a little since the sale—heed-

ing advice from advisers and friends. But, indeed, there is another company in the works. Armatus Bio, which will focus on gene and cell therapy, is still in stealth mode, he says, but he’s hoping it will have a similar significant impact. It’s keeping him busy, at least, in between all the media interviews, talks and presentations. There have been a lot more of those these days. His time at P&G, of course, is highlighted often in those chats as well. “Looking back, it’s amazing how much Procter & Gamble empowered individuals 22-23 years old, straight out of college. It was challenging. Slightly disorienting. But it was immensely valuable,” he says. “At age 22-23, I was working with, and at times leading, a group of people distributed across the globe. W

hile Clifford A. Bailey only spent about three years at Procter & Gamble, he feels that he walked away with the experience of someone who had been there for more than three times that. “From research and development to personal mentoring by others within Procter that had become mentors, and coaching, [it all] really accelerated my development,â€? says Bailey of his time at P&G. But Bailey’s atypical development fits perfectly with a career that hasn’t followed a straight line. Bailey joined P&G right after graduating from Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University) with a chemical engineering degree. Finding his place in product development, he would go on to work on products like Luvs, Pampers and Always. After three years there, he started his own IT company, TechSoft Systems. Today, he’s CEO of TechSoft, a member of the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC) and an international public speaker who speaks on topics like leadership, success, change management, emotional intelligence and small business. “I recognized what my managers at Procter learned probably earlier than I did: I was pretty creative and I didn’t necessarily follow the prescribed protocols to come up with solutions,â€? says Bailey. It was during his time P&G in the early ‘80s that he started looking at emerging markets and began considering his future. “I had researched probably‌ a hundredplus companies, industries and companies in those industries to consider starting my own business and what I concluded was information technology was the emerging market,â€? he says. He started TechSoft Systems, Inc. in 1983 and today manages networking infrastructure and cybersecurity for more than 90 companies.

“I left Procter, came back to Procter a year later and worked 25 consecutive years providing IT services to Procter,â€? says Bailey. In addition to using his experience to build his company, Bailey has leveraged it to help other businesses as part of the NMSDC. As a board member and National Minority Business Enterprise Input Committee chair, Bailey helps approximately 474 corporate members, which includes P&G, do business with minority businesses. “It has been rewarding to be able to assist a major corporation in identifying and to source and select a minority business, and that [company] delivers ‌ beyond the expectation of the corporate requirements,â€? he says.

Ultimately, what Bailey feels he most gained during his time at P&G was a greater appreciation and understanding of the consumer. “I would say the biggest thing out of all of the things I learned was study the consumer. Study the consumer, understand the consumer and really gain insight from the consumer. And it could be that very little thing that turns out to be the differentiator between you and a competitor,� he says. That ethos continues to guide Bailey and TechSoft Systems today. This year the company is launching a new product called Procurience, a supply chain platform that will help both buyers and businesses more effectively deliver impactful solutions. n 0 ' ! ' ,AmEY HAS THE DISTINCTION OF HAVING RETIRED FROM 0ROCTER 'AMBLE TWICE BUT HE S FOUND RETIREMENT THE SECOND TIME AROUND TO NOT BE THAT DIFFERENT FROM THE lRST “In 2010, and again in 2016, when my work was done, I moved away from the new leader and leadership team, the organization and the company, moved out of the office, moved out of town, and moved onto the next chapter in my life,� says Lafley. “I have always believed that I should move on to the next chapter when the current one ends.� During his first retirement, he served as partner at Clayton, Dubilier and Rice, where he worked on private equity investments in underperforming companies, and on the board of Legendary Entertainment, a start-up that disrupted the moviemaking industry. In his second, he’s worked with many start-ups and early stage companies, including Snapchat. “Some of the other eight to 10 companies will go public. Some will stay private. Some will fail or not make it. That is capitalism— the reality of creative destruction,� he says. He’s returned to the same location as well—Sarasota, Florida. The first time, he and his wife, Diana, spent their time exploring their new home and enjoying its laid-back lifestyle. This time, he’s doing his part to give back to the community they’ve enjoyed so much. One such project is the transformation of 53 acres of land on Sarasota Bay. Current plans include a public park, a performing arts center and other park amenities. “Think the Smale Riverfront Park on steroids,� Lafley says. He chaired the twoyear planning board effort and is currently serving as the founding CEO of the Bay Park Conservancy, which is overseeing the effort. Lafley articles, during his first retirement, is also looking to return to writing in his second. “I am more focused on local mentoring/ teaching/writing—working with young local YPO and similar leaders of for-profits, not-for-profits and even local government on the all-important subjects of leadership, strategy and innovation. I am plugging away on a third book to complete the trilogy on leadership to go with Playing to Win on strategy and Game Changer on innovation,� he says. But Lafley says what he gained from P&G is still applicable to what he’s doing, even while retired.

“P&G has a clear purpose, principles and values. When we focused on the consumer as boss, we improved our probability of success. Winning is creating value for consumers, for employees, for customers and suppliers, for investors and share owners—many of whom are employees,â€? he says. â€œInnovation is P&G‘s life blood. Innovation in everything we do, not just product, but also business model, organization, business process, etc. etc. “I have a strong, positive regard for the company—its current employees, its retirees and its alumni. We are one—with shared values and principles, and shared experiences,â€? he says. n
