Hello there ! I’m Cindy Jiang.

I am currently a second-year student at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture in Cambridge, Ontario. I am enthusiastic about exploring connection of architecture between human and nature, that environment can create powerful effects over our emotions and well-being, hence shapes who we are. I am eager to expand my understanding and skills of architecture and design through co-op experiences and would like to contribute my creative abilities to the firm. Looking forward to future opportunities to discuss my qualification and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me!

OASIS The Oasis is a small off-the-grid research station for the study of geology. It is located southeast of the resolute lake in Nunavut, Canada. It is a net-zero energy house designed to survive the extreme cold arctic climate. Inuksuk uses various passive heating design strategies such as trombe walls, south facing glazing, and vestibule zones to combat the cold climate and keep the indoors warm and comfortable. In addition, Inkuksuk uses renewable resources and has a rain harvesting system to take advantage of the snowmelt and stormy runoff in Nunavut. Overall, Inuksuk is a serene oasis that allows occupants to appreciate the arctic beauty that Nunavut manifests.

SENSORY

Library at the Junction

This library aims to provide a comfortable environment for not only the general public but also people with chronological disabilities. Where sensory systems being one of the major factors that drive the design. The design is in wish of solving the challenge of how to appropriately organize public space so that it is universal and how to find a balance between age appropriateness and chronological development for people with special needs. This is achieved by manipulating how space connects through visual and sounds, in wishing of creating an overall sense of transparency yet establish a balanced space between the privacy for the minorities. It is a welcoming space where ceiling height continuously changes as one moves around the library, creating an overall sense of playfulness.

PAVILION

The Indigenous Gathering Pavilion is located in downtown Kitchener, at the center of University of Waterloo’s main campus. The design concept takes inspiration from the stages of the Vision Quest, a rite of passage practiced by many indigenous groups. The pavilion consists of a sequence of four separate spaces that are connected by a continuous facade. By moving through the pavilion, one experiences meditation, isolation, and unification through the use of light, repetition and levels. It aims to help participants take a break from their busy lives to reflect on their role in this world and their connections to the community and environment.

LAKE BOGORIA, KENYA

DELTA

OBSERVATION TOWER

The Delta Observation Tower is located in the volcanic region of Lake Bogoria in Kenya’s National Reserve. The lake is fed by one single river, which supplies it with the sediments to feed millions of flamingos, but also making it vulnerable to pollution and siltation. Moreover, the hot springs in the area attract large numbers of visitors which further threatens the lake’s biodiversity. The tower directs visitors of the lake to view the wildlife and geysers from a comfortable and unobtrusive distance. The placement of the facade and the platforms are designed to provide shading throughout the day in the hot-arid climate. This tower not only aims to give safe views into the landscape but also aims to help the land rehabilitate.
