Write Right - Learning to Print WRITE RIGHT! LEARING TO PRINT is a fun and engaging instructional video series that utilizes tried and true strategies for primary students learning to print letters. With a generous dose of music, rhyme, and humor, students make clear connections to their early reading programs by using common word models. The modular, segmented design of the series allows for the introduction of letters in an interactive, flexible way so it is self-standing or can be used as a visual supplement to other handwriting programs with different letter sequencing. LEARNING TO PRINT has two charming characters: Bartleby, the wild and crazy pencil, and his glum chum, Gom, the eraser. Follow Bartleby’s encounters in his community through illustrated letters that he writes to Gom— which thoughtfully transition to the practice of letter formation. 1. GETTING STARTED 2. Write Right – Learning Cursive Using research-based interactive strategies to make learning fun, the series tackles the drudgery and redundant nature of learning to write in cursive handwriting for elementary aged children while helping them develop good habits in order to write right! Strategies include the repetition of catchy songs for important concepts, programs that are segmented, the use of self-critique after writing practice, and a review segment at the end of each program—all presented with a large dose of humor. Another well-proven strategy for learners is that they are encouraged to trace the shape that is being introduced with their finger in the air or on their desktops while students watch the animated character, Bartleby form the letters. 1. THE ARTS It’s a formidable challenge – building places in a rapidly urbanizing planet that are fit for humans to inhabit.

ARCHITECTS ON THE FRONTLINE Some take the view that our architects and town planners are failing us. But a new kind of architect is rising to the challenge by thinking outside the square. They’re designing buildings that aren’t just aesthetically pleasing, but also help to make our increasingly crowded planet a better place to be. ARCHITECTS ON THE FRONTLINE takes us behind the scenes of the world's richest prize in architecture - The Aga Khan Award for Architecture. In 2008, 401 projects were presented for consideration of which 19 were selected for competition and 5 winners were chosen at the end of the two year period by an independent Master Jury. The Aga Khan Development Network focuses on health, education, culture, rural development, institution-building and the promotion of economic development. It is dedicated to improving living conditions and opportunities for the poor, without regard to their faith, origin or gender.

THE ARTS AT FRIDA KAHLO’S «The Blue House,» located in Mexico City, is the home where Frida Kahlo was born (1907) and would die (1954). She was surrounded not only by painter Diego Rivera, who became her husband, but also by Leon Trotsky, André Breton, Sergei Eisenstein, Pablo Neruda, Waldo Frank, Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp and Vassily Kandinsky. After recently commemorating Mexico’s 200 years of national independence and the 100th anniversary of the Mexican Revolution, our film recalls the great adventures of «The Blue House»: its parties, its manifestoes, its artists, its freewheeling love affairs, its betrayals... as well as its unlikely melding of art and revolution, of Surrealism and Mexico, of the Old and the New Worlds.

Margaret & evergon In 1999, the celebrated Montreal photographer Evergon took a remarkable series of nude portraits of his own mother, then 80 years old. The photographs were instantly recognized as a singular achievement: the black and white images embodied not the infirmities of old age, but the timeless strength, dignity, even majesty. In 2007 Margaret Lunt left her long-time home in Niagara Falls, Ontario and moved to Montreal to live with her son. It was shortly afterwards, that filmmaker Donald Winkler embarded on a project that would explore what lay behind that series of photographs, uncovering in the process a poignant family history, a woman's determination to be her own person, how readily she threw off her own deepest cultural conditioning when she discovered both her sons were gay and a most unique and inspiring relationship between mother and son. The result...is MARGARET & EVERGON A many-sided gem of a film, not to be missed - Marianne Ackerman, Rover Oct. 29, 2011

Today’s waste may well be the treasure mines of tomorrow. This informative and engrossing documentary takes us to countries like Japan, Spain, France, Switzerland, Scotland, Belgium and even to the European Space Agency’s laboratories to come up with an optimistic list of the solutions of the future. GEOGRAPHY

USA – THE DEEP SOUTH From the State of Georgia to the Gulf of Mexico, across Alabama and then down the Mississippi to its mouth, “USA, the Deep South” is a journey of encounter with those that cherish the Deep South. Elgin Wells combines his two passions: music and stunt flying. Pilot, musician, poet, he is one of the few in America to present nighttime aerial displays. At Natchez, on the banks of the Mississippi, Pat Martin and Gay Guercio open the doors to Stanton Hall and Longwood, two magnificent mansions in the heart of the old cotton plantations. On Avery Island, the descendants of Edmund McIlhenny produce Tabasco, a simple recipe based on Mexican spices that has remained unchanged for 150 years. In the Atchafalaya Basin, an extraordinary nature reserve that is a paradise for birds, crawfish and alligators, Roy Blanchard and Shane Doucet are fighting to preserve their identity as Acadians, descendants of the first immigrants, who still speak old French. And finally, as Hurricane Isaac approaches, a most unlikely encounter with Chris and Steve, crab fishermen in the swamps on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico.

IN GOD WE TRUST How do you stop the spread of HIV when prevention is a sin? IN GOD WE TRUST highlights the effects of ideologically driven funding on HIV/AIDS prevention programs in Uganda. Despite millions of USAID dollars being poured into the country every year, the HIV prevalence rate is currently around 7% and rising. International funding has been crucial to the treatment of those infected with the virus, but has it been as effective for prevention? For every person receiving anti-retroviral drugs in Uganda, five more are infected with the virus. And with major USAID funding being diverted into “Abstinence Only” programs, the access to accurate prevention information and distribution of condoms is restricted. The church plays an important role in the lives of many Ugandans, and influences a large percentage of HIV/AIDS prevention and care. Many Ugandan pastors, influenced by the growing American Pentecostal Born Again movement, promote “Abstinence Only” and faithfulness as the only HIV prevention measures. While sex outside marriage is proclaimed promiscuous and sinful, this message contradicts cultural patterns and social conditions in current Ugandan society. The film illustrates the stories of Ugandan health and human rights professionals, pastors, teachers and individuals living with HIV/AIDS. It highlights the issues faced when international funding, intended to improve lives and to prevent the spread of the virus, is driven by Christian ideology.

MORDECAI RICHLER, THE LAST OF THE WILD JEWS Scripted by Richler’s new biographer, writer Charlie Foran, in collaboration with the film's director, Francine Pelletier, the film looks at Mordecai Richler, the man and the writer, in a new way, as one of a generation of gifted, angry Jewish writers and intellectuals who dominated much of North American culture from the ‘50s to the end of the century: Saul Bellow, Irving Layton, Lenny Bruce, Philip Roth, Norman Mailer and others. Richler, like the others, was a « wild Jew ». Born to immigrant parents and raised on a heady mix of talmudic teachings and comic book superheroes, later inspired by Isaac Babel’s jewish underworld, Richler was a natural agitator and provocateur. Like his famous American counterparts, he had the courage to rattle the cage of the complacent and the sacred while leaving an indelible mark on the society around them. Volatile, often contradictory, bereft of nuance, Mordecai Richler was also sensible, engaging, and unnervingly forthright. Richler was an undeniably rich asset to Canada’s cultural and literary life.

LAW AND JUSTICE

Argentina, the 500 stolen babies of the dictatorship Between 1976 and 1983, during the military dictatorship in Argentina, the lives of thousands of citizens became a horrific nightmare when squads of «special forces» rounded-up political opponents of the regime and sent them to be tortured and then killed in secret death camps. Young pregnant women were kept aside in appalling conditions until they gave birth, and their babies, the "little angels" as they were cynically called by the torturers, together with other abducted children, became "war booty" and were handed over to the military and their friends. This film is the story of the relentless struggle by the Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo to retrace those abducted children.

THE REST OF MY LIFE IS FOR SALE

That parallel universe – living big online

A 23-year-old Chinese girl opens an online shore selling “the rest of her life.” In her own words posted on the website: “It’s your right to arrange my life, and it’s my duty to serve you. I’ll fulfil your wishes. I’ll take pictures of the process and put them on my website so all people will know how I live with your arrangements.” The price for her life? $1 dollar for 8 minutes, $3 dollars for an hour, and $15 for a day. Watch as she undertakes a myriad of requests – from bringing cat food to an old lady who takes care of 200 vagrant cats, to collecting 100 pictures of 100 smiling men for a girl’s birthday. From the day she opened her online store, she has been living two separate lives – one is her reality, the other, her virtual world. An intriguing look on how new technologies are redefining our lives.

Is being infamous in the virtual world just as desirable as being famous in the real world? Why has “memes”, a perfectly respectable Greek word that means the transmission of ideas and cultural phenomena, come to be identified with ideas that are propagated through the virtual world? America may be the birthplace of the internet but has Asia taken control of it? The film, THAT PARALLEL UNIVERSE, LIVING BIG ONLINE uses "old media" to try and understand "new media". It analyses the truths and untruths, trends and the phenomena of the parallel online universe that has collided and become part of modern-day reality.

POLITICAL SCIENCE

Selected at FIPA 2013: Creative The BROtherhood : investigating the muslim brotherhood Document ary The Muslim Brotherhood was founded in 1928 by Hassan al-Banna, during a period that witnessed a revival of religious fundamentalism and armed combat against Western, and in particular British occupation of the Arabic peninsula. According to al-Banna, contemporary Islam had become corrupted by Western influences. These ideas brought them to power, in Egypt, where the Muslim Brotherhood was born and in most of the countries of the “Arab Spring” where aging nationalist dictators were deposed through popular uprisings. Initially keeping a distance from popular demands for democracy, the Brotherhood benefitted from their first democratic election when Mohammed Morsi came to power in Egypt in 2012 with 51% of the vote. To understand the movement today we look back on its history and ideas through interviews with founding leaders and analysts. English Subtitles

POLITICAL SCIENCE Every state has within itself the ability to be an abusive state.

GHOSTS Three Canadian Arab men are detained and tortured for months and years in Syria and Egypt. Upon their release they return to Canada struggling to find some answers. An internal national inquiry is struck to investigate the role of Canadian agencies and officials in their cases. The results of this inquiry, the first one in Canadian history to be conducted in almost complete secrecy, were that Canadian agencies such as the national police (RCMP), the intelligence services (CSIS) and the foreign affairs department (DFAIT), were complicit in all three cases. The camera team follows the lives and cases of the men for a year and a half as they fight to leave the horror of torture behind them. It is the first time that they speak about the circumstances surrounding their detention and torture extensively. They discuss the effects of the torture as well as their confusion as to how and why a democratic country such as Canada would be involved in internationally condemned acts of torture.

STATE OF LIMBO What do physicist Albert Einstein, cellist Mstislav Rostropovich and dissident writer Aleksander Solzhenitsyn have in common? All were “stateless” for some part of their lives. According to UN estimation, there are around 12 million stateless people in the world on today. "Statelessness" can have many causes, from war to ethnic discrimination to problematic laws. Stateless people are typically prevented from participating fully in society – lacking access to rights and services that the rest of us take for granted. In this program we go to Asia, Africa, Europe and the Pacific to hear the stories of stateless people – what’s it like to be citizens of nowhere? And as the UN celebrates the 50th Anniversary of its 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness, we ask what governments and others are doing to help them find a way out of their ‘state of limbo’.

100% conductive : superconductors On the 8th April 1911, while observing mercury at the temperature of liquid helium -269째C, Heike Kamerlingh Onnes discovered a new and surprising physics phenomenon: superconductivity! This phenomenon is made apparent by two remarkable effects. Superconductors not only conduct an electric current perfectly, they also expel magnetic fields and make magnets levitate. A hundred years after its discovery, superconductivity still remains a huge enigma. Many laboratories are concentrating their research on it, and it represents one of most essential issues of modern physics. This dynamic area of study has already been awarded thirteen Nobel Prizes! A variety of applications already exist that could change our world from medical imagery to levitating trains, and future applications like energy storage to quantum computers . This film treats the properties of superconductors, recent progress in research, and the existing and future applications of this extraordinary phenomenon. Bonus: "8 avril 1911, the Coldest Day" (10min.) tells how supraconductivity was discovered in Heike Kamerling Onneset's laboratory.

INGENUITY – ENGINEERING GROUND BREAKER Asia is currently witnessing a feverish pace to build, build, and build. Each country is trying to outbuild each other for the tallest building in the world. First it was the Petronas Towers, then it was the Shanghai Financial Centre, then it was the Taipei 101, and now it’s the Burj Dubai. The competition is now so intense that the developers behind the Burj Dubai are withholding the final height of the building until the actual unveiling ceremony to prevent others from beating them to the top. Mega construction projects may seem like new phenomena in the current climate. However, such practices are nothing new in Asia, as the continent has been home to many mega projects from centuries past, inspiring similar construction in other parts of the world. INGENUITY - ENGINEERING GROUND BREAKERS is a 8-part series which looks at engineering marvels currently being undertaken in Asia. Juxtaposed against an archetypal giant from the past, we are now witnessing a modern revival. 1. BURJ DUBAI : The Burj Dubai holds the title as the tallest man-made structure ever built. 2. MARINA BARRAGE: On a fully urbanised island the size of Singapore, water scarcity is a dire issue. The solution is the construction of an urban reservoir, the first of its kind in the world. 3. KOREAN TANKERS : Tankers are the workhorses of our modern economy and the largest of these are built in Korea. 4. MUMBAI HIGHWAY: For years, the roads of Mumbai were a hotbed of congestion and overcrowding. Now, a dynamic link road promises to ease the city’s traffic woes. 5. BEIJING AIRPORT : The largest airport terminal in the world in Beijing is an engineering marvel that nonetheless pays strict adherence to the principles of Chinese fengshui, and marks a new footnote in an age-old tradition of building big. 6. MARMARAY PROJECT: It is the world’s deepest immersed tunnel. Spanning across Asia and Europe, the Marmaray Project promises to ease Istanbul’s decades-old traffic woes. 7. PALM ISLANDS: The self-declared 8th Wonder of the World, the Palm trilogy is the largest man-made group of islands in the world and a credible testimony of human mastery over nature. 8. THREE GORGES DAM: The Three Gorges Dam is the largest hydro-electric dam in the world, a sheer engineering marvel.

CULTURE Fouad’s dream Fouad Sahyoun was born to a Arab-Christian family in Haifa in 1943. His family was forced to leave the country in the Palestinian exodus in 1948, when he was four years old. They established themselves in Canada. Fouad has “made it” in his adopted country. He is a proud father of three, runs a thriving real-estate business, and fulfills his duties as a city councilor. He also raises funds for the Canadian Palestinian Foundation and lobbies the federal government to push the United Nations to recognize the Palestinian’s right to return to their homeland. Fouad wants to go back to Haifa and reestablish himself in the city of his birth. He remembers the city as a jewel of Muslim-Jewish-Christian multi-faith and multi-ethnic harmony, before 1948. The film’s story is built around Fouad and his wife Haala’s trip back to Haifa, and his dream to build a business there. Fouad Sahyoun’s dream to establish business and cultural links between Montreal and Haifa, is fraught with difficulties - familial as well as political. But he believes that entrepreneurship can succeed where diplomacy and war have failed.

Thanks to the GNH - Gross National Happiness – everyone lives in perfect harmony. The painted phalluses on the walls seem to serve as constant reminders of the existence of Drukpa Kunley, a crazy Yogi whom is said to have converted the people of Bhutan to Buddhism through the use of methods deemed unorthodox to say the least. And then we are told of the yeti, the abominable snowman, who’s said to inhabit the wilderness of Eastern Bhutan. The lord’s children There are 100,000 child soldiers in Africa. According to Amnesty International, in the Central African Republic alone, they number 30,000. For the past ten years, child soldiers have become indispensable and are a trademark of rebel groups. The film follows in the footsteps of the Lord’s Resistance Army, the LRA, a rebel group which was initially formed to resist the Uganda People’s Defence Force but now has been accused of widespread human rights violations, including forcing children to participate in acts of violence as soldiers of the LRA . The army which initially operated in northern Uganda and South Sudan has since spread to the Democratic Republic of Congo. Joseph Kony, the chief of the LRA, was indicted by the International Criminal Court in 2005 on 12 accounts of crime against humanity and 21 counts of war crimes and is still at large. From Paris to La Haye, and all the way to the Central African Republic, the film leads us along the path of the Lord’s children to hear their heartwrenching stories.

A country’s hunger A COUNTRY'S HUNGER, directed by Mark Chatel, is an unusual and necessary “road movie” and documentary that focuses on the promise made to Canada’s children. 2009 marked the 20th anniversary of an enthusiastic and unanimous resolution in the Canadian House of Commons. The House sought to achieve the goal of eliminating poverty among Canadian children by the year 2000. Mark Chatel decided to travel across the country to see what progress had been made in those 20 years. Suspecting that there were still many children living in poverty in Canada, he naively thought that the situation must have improved by now. But he was wrong.

below the line Mark went from coast to coast to talk to the parents, teachers, social workers, politicians and, of course, the children who suffer the throes of poverty on a daily basis. He wanted to see how, as citizens of a country like Canada, we could do our part to end one of the most troubling realities of our country. MISSING MILLIONS Today, we see India as a rising economy and powerhouse set to compete with giants such as the USA and China. However, beneath this potential and growth lies a pertinent problem yet to be properly addressed: the sex ratio imbalance. This is the direct consequence of bride trafficking, female feticide and excess female mortality after birth – issues that most of us do not encounter in our daily lives, yet so crucial and persistent in India. Heart-wrenching and inspiring, MISSING MILLIONS seeks to educate viewers on the need to valorize and respect the status of women in India because they are a key driving force behind India’s future growth.

THE BLOOD oF WOMEN The Pokot people come from north-west Kenya and a part of Uganda. Proud and fiercely independent, the Pokot are bearers of an ancient culture with some well-entrenched rituals. Female genital mutilation, a rite of passage into womanhood, is one of them. This film presents a collection of testimonies of those who confront this tradition, of those who fight it and, more often, those who suffer its consequences.
