Anansi the Spider

The folk tales of Anansi the spider are centuries old. They tell of a spider who always outwits his opponents. The message being: you must be smart if you are not big and strong. These West African fairy tales were spread to countries including Surinam, the Dutch Antilles as well as to the Caribbean in general by the slave trade. There, they were passed on by word of mouth as well as constantly refined. Everyone knows them, while in the Netherlands and Europe few people have heard of Anansi.

Author Iven Cudogham thought Dutch children should also get to know Anansi. Last year, he brought the spider to the Netherlands through his children’s books and an exhibition at the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam. Now, there is this brand new, inclusive animation series for toddlers. Anansi the Spider’s global premiere will be at Cinekid.

Divorced Parents

Mijn ouders zijn gescheiden

In the Netherlands approximately one in three marriages fails and every year 86,000 children are told that their parents are getting divorced. A third of these children will experience a custody battle. Children tend not to talk much amongst themselves about tough situations at home and are loyal to both parents. This means they often face major dilemmas, are very sad and process that in silence. These four youth documentaries reveal how children deal with a divorced family situation.

This series’ objective is to give these children a voice and to open up their stories for discussion. For instance, Levin (9) is trying to find our why her parents are divorced by drawing, modelling in clay and making up stories. Din (12) prefers to express himself through football instead of talking. Children also look back at the moment their parents told them: we are getting divorced.

In This I Believe

Dit geloof ik

In This I Believe is a trans-media project whereby 12 children ranging from 10 to 12 years old in religious families show us their reality. The children show the viewer the practices, traditions, written and unwritten rules of their religions using documentary portraits, photographs, audio excerpts and conversations they have amongst themselves.

By allowing religious children to talk about their experiences, other children can be introduced to the diversity of religions in the Netherlands in an unbiased manner.

Misfit: The Series

The Misfits have a good year ahead of them, one in which the friends are going to work hard on their own musical. While they are busy writing the music and devising choreographies, they are told that the musical has unexpectedly been banned. The new head teacher Agnes (Georgina Verbaan) wants the focus to be on discipline, high grades and lots of studying, but Julia won’t be stopped. Together the Misfits keep working on the musical in secret to sabotage the new school system.

This new series consists of eight episodes and is the continuation of the popular high school films Misfit, Misfit 2 and Misfit 3. Just like the films, the energetic series will be shown on Netflix and is in competition for the Cinekid Lion Jury Prize for the Best Dutch Fiction Series.

Mister Paper cuts and glues the world together just the way he likes it. He lives in a paper house surrounded by paper nature. His only companion is a cat, yet thanks to his scissors and his child-like imagination, he is never alone. For every situation he creates a solution by cutting something new out or gluing something somewhere. When he is thirsty he cuts out a bottle, when he is hungry: an apple. Or he cuts out a cow, so he has milk for his cat. And if the cat doesn’t want to play, he cuts out a dog or a girl to go for walks with. Using plenty of imagination, his adventures bring the world to life: a world of unlimited options.

This cut-out series for toddlers was based on the books by Elvis Peeters that were illustrated by Gerda Dendooven.

Ninja Nanny 2

In the first season of Ninja Nanny teen Hunter had just moved to the posh Gooidorp and moved in with her mother’s new family. She felt like an outsider and was even bullied, but when she discovered her au pair Farah was a ninja, an unexpected friendship blossomed. Farah taught her the mystic art of self-defence, magic, and meditation.

In this second season, Hunter faces off against Farah because Hunter and Christa exploit the ninjas’ fame. The girls even ride around the village dressed in purple Super Ninjas suits. They are madly in love, but Hunter ultimately realises that she has lost sight of what it truly means to be a ninja. She stops being part of the Super Ninjas and breaks up with Christa. She goes in search of her biological father as well.

De avonturen van Pim & Pom in het museum

In this colourful series, the cats Pim and Pom introduce children to fine art. Famous Dutch works of art provide the backdrop for their adventures and a different artwork is used every episode. For example, they go skating in Winter Landscape with Skaters by Hendrick Avercamp, where they meet a toddler who can’t skate. The cats also look around Pieter de Hooch’s A Mother’s Duty. There they meet a girl and a dog who aren’t allowed to get dirty. That seems doomed to fail, particularly if Pim and Pom play along. The cats also play hide and seek and lose one another in Vincent van Gogh’s Wheatfield with Crows.

This series provides a great initial introduction to fine art for toddlers. Pim and Pom were first drawn midtwentieth century by famous Dutch illustrator Fiep Westendorp for stories written by Mies Bouhuys.

Rintje 2

This animation series brings Rusty the dog from Sieb Posthuma’s popular children’s books to life. The fearless, sweet fox terrier discovers the world with his ears up and his nose in the air. What is the first day of school like? And celebrating your birthday? Or having to see the doctor? Rusty experiences all sorts of things during this second season. For instance, a sawing someone in half act ends in an unexpected manner, he becomes homesick whilst staying over at grandma’s and camps in the garden with his friends Tobias and Henriette.

Rusty centres on friendship and the ties between the title character and his mother and grandmother. The second season of this stop-motion animation series also consists of 26 short episodes. The principal voices are provided by Dutch actors Georgina Verbaan, Nasrdin Dchar and Guy Clemens.
