With its recent world premiere at Venice, this marks Gabriel Mascaro as the leading figure in a burgeoning new wave movement coming out of Recife in Brazil's north-east. The story centres on Iremar who works as a vaqueiro wrangling bulls on the tough, macho rodeo circuit, but each evening swinging from the hammock in the back of the truck, Iremar's head is filled with dreams of pattern cutting, sequins and exquisite fabrics as he mentally assembles his latest sexy fashion designs. Will this be a case of Strictly Bullroom, or will our hero achieve his frock dreaming?

The ocean contains the history of all humanity. The sea holds the voices of the Earth and those that come from outer space. Water receives impetus from the stars and transmits it to living creatures. Water, the longest border in Chile, also holds the secret of a mysterious button that was discovered in its seabed. Chile, with its 2,670 miles of coastline, the largest archipelago in the world, presents a supernatural landscape. In it are volcanoes, mountains and glaciers. In it are the voices of the Patagonian indigenous people, of the first English sailors and also those of its political prisoners. Some say that water has memory. This film shows that it also has a voice.

How did a boy from a backward town on the Caribbean coast become a writer who won the hearts of millions? How did he rise from the poorest to the most powerful? How did he change our perception of reality with his work? The answer lies in the incredible story of Gabriel García Márquez, affectionately known as “Gabo”. Following the 1982 Nobel Prize winner for Literature, author of the critically acclaimed masterpiece “One Hundred Years of Solitude”, and friend with political leaders such as Fidel Castro and Bill Clinton, this film is a story about the incredible power of human imagination told with the narrative tension of an investigation.

The best road movies are the ones where the spectators make their own journey, in parallel to that of the heroes. Road to La Paz tells the story of the journey of an elderly Muslim, who asks an “amateur taxi driver” to drive him, in his beat up Peugeot 505, from Buenos Aires to La Paz, from where he plans to travel to Mecca. The film covers thousands of miles on screen, while our “emotional speedometer”, as viewers, racks up a few miles of its own, as we watch this tender, heart-wrenching story.
